I tried searching for a thread, but the only thread talking about them is a footie thread, ugh!

I want to go there. Tell me about them.

Super-Kate (kate), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 09:44 (twenty-one years ago)

They play football there.

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 09:46 (twenty-one years ago)

They make some beautiful music also.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 09:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Shut it! (Hmmm, not Tiit)

I'm interested in checking out the Viking Legacy. (If only Noodles would wake up to understand the joke behind that...)

Super-Kate (kate), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 09:48 (twenty-one years ago)

The plucky Scots managed to take a point there. It's an island on the move!

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 09:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Scotland vs Faroe Islands is the football thread.

If you continue talking footie on my tourist/info thread, I will take that as an invitation to get on any and all footie threads and start spouting random rubbish about teenage pop stars and linguistics. Just don't.

Super-Kate (kate), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 09:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't read the footie threads cos I don't like footie and I do have an interest in teenage pop stars and linguistics so please be my guest.

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 09:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I am joking btw.

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 09:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i was talking about the recent Shove Piggy Shove World Cup acktewally...but i take your point, much like the mighty part-timers of the Faroes were forced to

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 09:57 (twenty-one years ago)

And there I was, almost missing Stevem.

Super-Kate (kate), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 09:59 (twenty-one years ago)

ha ha, nice texture

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 10:01 (twenty-one years ago)

vestmanna sounds like fun

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 10:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Texture is urgent and key, both in music and holiday destinations!

The pictures I've seen look great! Like Scotland, but bleaker!

Super-Kate (kate), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 10:02 (twenty-one years ago)

That formation will never work. Who plays 11-2-2 these days? The pitch leaves a little to be desired too.

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 10:02 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.lowefoto.com/faroe/faroe-16.jpg

This looks better than The Needles on the Isle of Wight!

http://www.fokus.gmd.de/research/cc/magic/employees/christian.fuhrhop/private/iceland/faroe5.jpg

...looks like a lovely place to stay!

Very funny "review" accompanying the picture. This bloke who went on this nonstop whirlwind tour of Greenland and Iceland in a week, and then got upset when he got to the Faroes because there was "nothing to do but walk around on green hills". Which sounds like my ideal holiday, really.

Super-Kate (kate), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 10:15 (twenty-one years ago)

You need to stand on top of the highest point and shout DANISH SCUM! just like the Swedish doctor in The Kingdom.

(What am I doing here? I'm supposed to be cutting shorthand to study! I've got an exam in an hour and a half! arg....)

Catty (Catty), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 10:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm glad that you're here and not studying shorthand!

You are the only person who's had any knowledge of Faroe that isn't football (except maybe Tiit)!

Super-Kate (kate), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 10:28 (twenty-one years ago)

What no ancient churches spoiling the green hills?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 10:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Viking Longhouses!

Super-Kate (kate), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 10:33 (twenty-one years ago)

This might be a Faroese Church, but I don't know, I don't speak the language!

Super-Kate (kate), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 10:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Does Denmark have good health care? I'll go with you and just see doctors.

Catty (Catty), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 10:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, I checked my Lonely Planet guide and there was NUTHIN on the Faroe Islands.
which makes me only more intrigued by them.
I bet you could sail there from Hull on Stena.

Catty (Catty), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 10:36 (twenty-one years ago)

And lovely spam.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 10:36 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.commerce.usask.ca/faculty/mentzer/faroes3.jpg

Are the Faroe Islands actually part of Denmark? I'm sure Denmark has good healthcare, but in the Faroe Islands they'll probably be all "A-heert, ah-hoort, we haff not a doktooorrrr, but you can go to Die Vet!"

Super-Kate (kate), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 10:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Weex, sorry, that's quite big, that is!

http://www.commerce.usask.ca/faculty/mentzer/faroesmap.JPG

Apparently, they're a Danish Territory, but that doesn't mean they're actually part of Denmark of the EU.

Super-Kate (kate), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 10:38 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.andersontravel.com/jpgs/torshavn_faroeislands.jpg

Apparently Torshavn is the smallest capital in the world....and home to the oldest parliament, the Løgtingið.

winterland, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 10:38 (twenty-one years ago)

There are actual TREES, or rather HEDGES in my second Church photo. I was under the impression there weren't any on the Faroes.

Super-Kate (kate), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 10:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Why can't they have trees? A world without trees, how odd.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 11:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Too far North! The climate is above the tree line!

(Though I see those specific trees are in a bit of a hollow, and therefore probably protected from the HOWLING WIND.)

Super-Kate (kate), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 11:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Too windy, or those pesky Irish monks burnt them all in the C12th or something.

xpost

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 11:10 (twenty-one years ago)

This might be a Faroese Church, but I don't know, I don't speak the language!

Quick'n'dirty:
"The ruins we see here are of a cathedral that was never finished. It was started under Bishop Erlendur of the Faroe Islands; he was bishop from 1269 to 1308. The cathedral was partially destroyed by an avalanche in 1722, but most of it remained standing. The faces carved in stone depict Bishop Erlendur and the Norwegian King Håkon V. Slightly north of this cathedral, there are remains of an even earlier church, St. Brendan's. This has been dated to the early 12th century.

Today, a somewhat newer church is in use in this place: St. Olav's Church. Originally built in 1111, it was restored in 1874 and 1966.

The wooden buildings shown in the pictures are Roykstovan, a 900 years old farmer's house. The farm has been owned by the very same family for 18 generations. Its interior is how it was in Medieval times. At the first floor, there is a room that is said to have been used by the young King Sverri. He was born here in the Faroes in 1149 and lived her until 1174, when he went to Norway to claim the throne after his father."

OleM (OleM), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 12:05 (twenty-one years ago)

They (the Faeroese) like a nice bit of whale meat.

David (David), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 12:06 (twenty-one years ago)

My girlfriend's parents went there for a holiday. They said it was expensive and rained all the time. When the sun came out their photos looked rather lovely.

The paperclip was invented there.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 12:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Thank you, OleM!

x-post, yes, that is a concern. This might be the only thing that stops me from going. HSA pointed out that not only is it difficult to obtain veggie food in strange places, but also that fish is such a large part of the diet of Islands that almost all of it could kill me. Unless I want to eat nothing but breakfast cereal for a week...

Super-Kate (kate), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 12:08 (twenty-one years ago)

The paperclip was invented there.

What what what? I believe that was in Norway, or at least by a Norwegian... Do you have a source for your RIDICULOUS CLAIM???

;-)

OleM (OleM), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Rumbled again.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Apparently, they're a Danish Territory, but that doesn't mean they're actually part of Denmark of the EU.

They're an autonomous part of Denmark, just like Greenland. They have their own provincial parliament, but they must adhere to Danish laws. I'm pretty sure they joined EU when Denmark did, and couldn't have done otherwise.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Why can't they have trees? A world without trees, how odd.

Hey Malta, get a tree!

(dashes off to look for Malta thread)

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Kate, don't you know that The Faroe Island should be avoided at all costs because they still practice whaling and are, undoubtedly, pigshit thick barbaric idiots as a result?

CRW (CRW), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Just saw someone else pointed it out, but really - you should drag your ass elsewhere. I vouch for Iraq. There's a chance you might get shot out there.

CRW (CRW), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Not that I want to see you shot obviously, which would be really upsetting.

(I'm adding that because you do seem to take everything I say here literally).

CRW (CRW), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

A world without a brain, how odd.

Itchy woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:51 (twenty-one years ago)

are, undoubtedly, pigshit thick barbaric idiots as a result?

The most utterly spot on the money involuntary self expression which has occurred on ILX to date.

Super-Kate (kate), Thursday, 6 May 2004 06:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Though let not Faroe stand between you and the true viking destination, Halifax.

BOYS IN A BAND

24 GIGS IN 24 HOURS AND DEBUT ALBUM NEWS

"They sound like The Strokes without that crushing pretension ruining it…Plus, seeing them live, is an experience to say the least." Clash magazine

“…huge stars…” NME

With one foot planted firmly in modern indie rock ground and the other wobbling about, Boys in a Band look backwards into music history, eclectically mixing that which they see fit into a musical melting pot of well calculated chaos. The reckless and danceable rhythms of classic rock n roll, the weighty and lofty vitality of pre-Elvis black gospel and blues, the epic grittiness of old school country, the bare idealism of hippy protest singing and the groove of seventies cock rock – these diverse and, at times, more than slightly contradictory elements exist in perfect harmony in Boys in a Band's universe, thanks to their utterly infectious and youthful charisma, of which they are brimming.

The band has and is going to play several big festivals since they started playing in September '06 – Roskilde (DK), Iceland Airwaves (IS), EuroSonic (NL), by:Larm (NO), Canadian Music Week (CA) and SXSW (US). Despite having formed only 18 months ago the boys are gaining reputation for their fantastic music and stagecraft earning them international attention as one of the most exciting up and coming bands from Scandinavia.

The Boys have just released their debut album in the Faroe Island’s where they reside. The album entitled Black Diamond Train was recorded in London with legendary producer Ken Thomas (Sigur Rós, Dave Gahan, David Bowie, Sugarcubes & more).

To celebrate its release the band performed, a possibly record breaking 24 gigs in 24 hours around the 18 islands performing by waterfalls, in caves, on the roof of a toilet, on a boat & many other locations as well as travelling by helicopter, boat, motorbike and cycle ending at the mini G festival in Gøta performing a full set. This unique occasion was documented on film to capture a truly unique country - its people, nature and culture - from a curious angle made to nurture the passion from music lovers on home turf as well as around the globe.

The album will be out in Autumn ‘08 and there's no doubt it will trigger the fastest rolling musical revival since Be Bop A Lula. Amen.
