I thought it was called Man on Fire, but no matter, Denzel is still a stone cold fox.

"Trying to explain what Burning Man is to someone who has never been to the event is a bit like trying to explain what a particular color looks like to someone who is blind."

Um...

DougD, Monday, 10 May 2004 13:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooh a chap I met went to that, once. He said it was good.

Will someone please start a thread for "rubbest anecdote that isn't even worthy of the name 'anecdote' ftb it is quite frankly a disgrace to words", please?

Sarah (starry), Monday, 10 May 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

radical self-expression
Hello dere, I am the Amazing Randy!

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Monday, 10 May 2004 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Burning Man is an annual experiment in temporary community dedicated to radical self-expression, tubular self-examination, gnarly paths to bitchin' enlightenment, and kick-ass creative hair-styles.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 10 May 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm still pretty puzzled by this. Is it just a yearly hippie gathering?

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Monday, 10 May 2004 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG it's so much more than that. they also make cookies USING SOLAR POWER!!!

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Monday, 10 May 2004 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

this is like those parties in college when the people who you least wanted to see naked got naked.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 10 May 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

The vets on this board will soon chime in. I know many people who have gone, but personally, I'm sorta addicted to showers in the morning.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 May 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

it's in the fucking desert, they can probably make cookies by leaving cookie dough out in the midday sun.

Seriously though if they use photovoltaics and not mirrors and lenses they are capitalist corporate pigscum.

Ed (dali), Monday, 10 May 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

"What night does the Man burn?"

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Monday, 10 May 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I know a shit ton of people who go to this every year who couldn't possibly be any less hippie. Until they get out there in the desert, that is.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 10 May 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Burning Man

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 10 May 2004 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

SOunds like a poor mans Glastonbury to me.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 10 May 2004 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Its not the same as Glastonbury, its more like the Vaselines "The Day I Was a Horse" turned into an event. Some reason people get ultra hung up on it. Must be the solar power cookies.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 10 May 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Most important fact = you have to bring your own fucking WATER!

Ricardo (RickyT), Monday, 10 May 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I've gone for the last five years, & am almost certainly going again this year. It's... AMAZING. Most important fact, actually = you are not allowed to use money for a week*. It makes a BIG difference.

* (except for one place in the middle of the city where you can buy ice and coffee, which benefits the cash-strapped town about 15 miles away)

Not like Glastonbury, at all. Not especially hippie-heavy. Mocked pretty much entirely by people who haven't been there.

And damn right, you have to bring your own water. (And of course you can have a shower in the morning, if you know where to look--you just have to supply your own water for that, too.)

Douglas (Douglas), Monday, 10 May 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't know about the no-money thing, cool.

A google image search on "burning man" yields wildly varied interesting results.

Everyone I know that's gone there says it's amazing (which sorta reminds me of that play they put on in Huck Finn) but I'd like to go some day. I really enjoy deserts.

Kris (aqueduct), Monday, 10 May 2004 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Some really nice photos of the cityscape there from the last couple of years (both pages by the same person, I'm not sure who):

Douglas (Douglas), Monday, 10 May 2004 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a very recent Todd Rundgren interview in which he was asked what he had been doing for the past couple of years and Rundgren replies very enthusiastically that he had been busy preparing for and going to Burning Man.

Kinda explains why the new album is the way it is.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Monday, 10 May 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Uh, all I can say is it's not for everyone. I got there about 10 in the morning, all my water had boiled, I didn't pack enough food or booze or sun tan oil, it was way too large to find my friends, I didn't bring a bicycle, and basically everyone I spoke to was 10 times as annoying as they might have been in a colder, wetter, greener place. There was a lot of agressive passivity. I managed it for about 8 hours before I had to leave, got a cheap flight back to San Hose. If anyone's been to Glastonbury in a muddy year, it is oh so much worse.

That said, at least four people I know go every year an have a fuckin' ball.

i mock it and i *have* been there, at the 2nd Burning Man ever when it was still pagan chaos instead of Phish-fueled-naked- Us-Festival 2000.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 10 May 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Find the fun little Onion bit on this, where the guy wonders why there aren't more non-white, non-IT/hippie folk at the event.

suffice it to say, this sounded like much fun when I first heard about several years ago, but word has it that things have gotten worse as word spreads.

Kingfish Disraeli (Kingfish), Monday, 10 May 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

the first fe years were surreal and fantastic. now it's "Boring Man"

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 10 May 2004 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never been, but I posed the concept to a old alt.stupidity friend of mine about 3 years ago. He said "I would have like, 6 years ago. but its too corporate now." And he wasn't being sarcastic.

But hey, people go and have fun, I guess. There's always Subgenius devivals.

Christian Zombie Vampires!!

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 07:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, basically what happens is a 6 figure number of people (artsy fucks, hippies, etc) go into the Black Rock Desert of Nevada and set up a tent city. Main rules are no cars, no money, and everything has to be taken out without leaving any damage to the enviroment. People make all sorts of weird solar/human powered vehicles, run around naked covered in paint, look at shit, drink, smoke, fuck, etc and basically party for several days.

Alan Conceicao, Tuesday, 11 May 2004 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't have to go to a festival to walk around with no money. i can do it riiiight here.
