T/S: Long Sleeves vs. Short Sleeves

You can roll up long sleeves to make them short. You can't hide track marks with short sleeves. But short sleeves are very attractive.

Well?

andy, Tuesday, 11 May 2004 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

it's going to get to 86 today in NYC, so I say short sleeves.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

long sleeves in winter

short sleeves in summer

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

mix 'em up in spring and fall.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I tend to always cover up my arms. but then i would never wear a long sleeve t-shirt.

(I have got a secret entirely sublimated love of wearing a long sleeve t-shirt with a short sleeve one over it.)

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

jel lives life on the edge

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, you better believe it.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

robbie that won't be much of a secret once you go outside.....

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I never allow that desire to overtake me though. the last time I did I was still in school. Now i fall under societies "rules" and only ever wear short under long.

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

girlies in my uni used to wear short over long all the time.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

that's totally lostprophets.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I think ladies can get away with it more easily. I just look like a tubby goth.

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I never ever wear long sleeves, but I would rather wear rolled-up sleeves than naturally short sleeves (at least when it comes to button-ups, short sleeved t-shirts are preferable to long sleeved). Got it?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I wear short sleeves over long sleevs quite a lot and also roll my shirt sleeves. I really want a t-shirt with sleeves down to my elbows or just under them tho' - plz hlp.

Barima (Barima), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

what about rolling your trouserlegs up? my friend SKC did that at the Winchester club (perhaps because it was very hot, perhaps to try and stop us using his leg as an ashtray) and he was briefly the swankiest man there.

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Short-sleeve button-down shirts are totally wrong, unless they're like Marc Jacobs or something. Maybe an exception for seersucker or equivalents? Maybe.

You can't hide track marks with short sleeves

lovely

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

There's also NO sleeves at all, you know... like on Joanie loves Chachi.

andy, Tuesday, 11 May 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I cut one of the sleeves off a long sleeve shirt to wear on my left arm on the afternoon drive home so that I don't develop asymmetrical tanning proportions like I have in years past.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Plus I look really KEWL.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

There's lots of homely clubber girls with one-armed tops. Or at least there was last year.

andy, Tuesday, 11 May 2004 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

short or none so i can show my tats, yo.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Long sleeves are evil in every way.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

short sleeve shirts are awful.

long sleeve tees, I think, are awful too.

so.

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i like both. it all depends on the weather.

either can be stylish.

todd swiss (eliti), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate wearing jumpers because they have long sleeves, and if I wear a jacket I like it to have an unbuttonable cuff so that the sleeves aren't tight on my wrists. Short sleeves in shirts, t-shirts, gotta be.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

andy, Tuesday, 11 May 2004 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

it's good thing cozen doesn't have any arms.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

it's my legs you should worry about.

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I have reservations, about your toes.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

It's too bad sleeveless shirts look like ass, because it's the only way I could show off my tat.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

if weather allowed, i think i'd wear long-sleeved shirts exclusively.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

a rolled-up long sleeve >>>>>> a short sleeve.

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

on shirts.

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

"Long sleeves? Wye, I never..."

Popeye, Tuesday, 11 May 2004 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I really like long sleeves, but most long sleeve shirts don't have sleeve's long enough to accomodate my orangutan arms.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

love a guy in a wife-beater. if he's got the arms for it. I like tank tops for showing off my tats.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Short sleeves can't dance.

Evanston Wade (EWW), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Short-sleeve button-down shirts are totally wrong

a rolled-up long sleeve >>>>>> a short sleeve

word

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Short-sleeve button-down shirts are totally wrong

no way. western shirts? work shirts? bowling shirts???

totally classic.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Aye, I have a black linen short sleeved shirt that is, how you say, the explosive device.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

bowling shirts and work shirts are okay. my rule of thumb is that if you could even theoretically wear a tie with a shirt, it had better be long-sleeved.

nb: i have shit for fashion sense really, so imagine these words being issued from my ass in a high squeaky voice

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Tartan short-sleeve button down shirts = MOD. Think The Action et al.

andy, Tuesday, 11 May 2004 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

dude guys rocking the long-sleeve under short look is totally wrong. that's my only contribution to this thread.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 02:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Short-sleeve button-down shirts are totally wrong,

gabbneb unbelievably OTM

(pushed my sleeves up to type that)

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to think short sleeved button down shirts were wrong but it really does depend on the cut of the shirt. If it's a nice fitted number with little cap sleeves it can be astoundingly hottt.

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 02:50 (twenty-one years ago)

button-downs are not right and blue jeans might be not right, too.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 10:14 (twenty-one years ago)

oh you beigists

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 10:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Is this a generic shirt discussion, or are you drawing a distinction between work and non-work shirts? Because short-sleeved work shirts - wrong. ESPECIALLY if worn with a tie.

I'm very much in the long-sleeve camp. Versatility. However a short-sleeve can be acceptable depending on the cut etc (and preferably plain. I have a short-sleeved brown shirt from H&M which I treasure).

ALSO has there been a return to the days of tucking in shirts? Taking sides, please. (Never on a short-sleeve: madness.)

clive (Clive), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 10:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I rock the short sleeved tee over a long sleeved top quite often - not yer baggy Avril look, the longsleeve is usually a tight bodystocking type thing, and I wear tees over that. I dunno, I like it.

Shortsleeved shirts on guys over lonsleeved tees can look hot too, sometimes.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 10:22 (twenty-one years ago)

God yeah short sleeves with a tie are just awful, for some reason.

I would never wear a long sleeve t-shirt, unless it was of material considerably thicker than a short sleeve t-shirt, thus distinguishing it.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 10:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, this thread is making the word "sleeve" look weird. It doesnt look like a WORD now. WTF.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 10:23 (twenty-one years ago)

depends on the guy trayce for sure, my husband is huge and smelly and does this look, it's embarassing. He looks like the comic book guy from the simpsons without the ponytail.

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 10:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Hehehe.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 10:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I CONFESS I HAVE A LONGSLEEVED SONIC YOUTH TSHIRT OK KILL ME NOW KTHX

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 10:26 (twenty-one years ago)

heh, i used to have a longsleeved dinosaur jr. one!

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 10:27 (twenty-one years ago)

short sleeved shirt and tie a dud?! surely some mistake!! (starry), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 10:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Long sleeves are better, but short sleeves are quite useful in summer. In Japan there is a designated day when the businessmen change from long sleeveed white dress shirts to short sleeved white dress shirts.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Long sleeves under short should have died with Kurt Cobain. This is all I have to contribute to this thread.

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I quite agree. I just can't help but recall how comfortable i found it, and yet how ridiculous i looked....

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

ALSO has there been a return to the days of tucking in shirts? Taking sides, please.

we did it here/ The consensus: tucking in is fucking dumb.
