hi kids! it's strongo. i was thinking about this earlier today at work after reading some 2001 threads this morning. remember when we all thought talking about rudy huxtables clitoris was the lowest ilx could go? seems a bit quaint now, like a woman in one of those full length stripey bathing suits showing her ankles on the beach. so what IS the lowest, most disgusting, inappropriate thing ever posted to ilx?

It could be argued that the suicide thread that we had a while back (with live pictures of the guy threatening to jump) was the lowest point, morale-wise, that we've gone.

Saying that, it was also the thread that spoke to me more than anything else, as it said something rather important about how people interact with the internet generally, and ILX specifically. So maybe it's the highest point as well? I dunno.

gareth reminded me about the 'non-fapper' aspect which i am possibly under-estimating the effect of when it comes to making the kind of posts i sometimes make with the attitude i sometimes have (jokey sarcasm hopping gleefully between ironic self-deprectation and playground pigtail-pulling because the humour lies in the absurdity of my doing that rather than what is actually being said). although i am not quite fully convinced it is definitely a 'BAD' way to behave.

The Stelfox vs Carmody thread was pretty low, although I understand why DS wanted to start it. I like both DS & RC so I kept well out of it, and I'm glad it was deleted.

Robin also did the right thing in keeping well out of that thread. Me, I just wade in like an idiot and fire back. That'll teach me not to try it. A very dispiriting read.

Anyway I don't have much time to hang around ILx today so I'll leave it at that.

it's weird. i'd advise any newcomers to do a lot of lurking, and to keep their powder dry, basically. cos you end up jumping into stuff without knowing anything about it. like the government. it took me a few months to really recognise names and identities of semi-regulars, which is dangerous ground. i still get some people confused.

i did as well at first, it was a while before i started going out and meeting people thru this bitch - there were a few people i read comments of and decided i didn't like much based on minor arguments - nothing serious at all. then when i met them i thought they were great and as mentioned on that marcello thread, just seemed friendlier - as did i i expect. i don't think you can avoid forming opinions/ideas of people online before you meet them, but you should always remember it doesn't represent them fully as they really are and to base your judgements on a bogus assumption like that strikes me as naive and unwise.

There was nothing whatsoever uncalled for or beyond the pale about the Graham threads when you consider the way in which he behaved both on and off the boards, if only because no one really overstepped the mark that much. That's sort of what I mean: unless you know the whole context (and I don't) you get a really skewed perspective: knowing nothing of Graham's offline behavious, and very little of his online misdemeanours, the threads seemed harsh to me -- but I totally acknowledge that I've a very limited perspective on this.
