Will that guy on Jeopardy ever lose?

He's won 16 times in a row now and has racked up over half a mil. Every time I've seen him, he's put the game out of reach before the end of the second round. And he doesn't even seem like a freak or anything! cf. that Eddie guy with the huge forehead and beady eyes. He was scary.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

They got rid of it to hopefully boost ratings. Haven't they ever seen 'Quiz Show'?

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Did anyone watch the "reunion" or whatever it was called that brought back the kid prodigies from the 80s? One guy with a soul patch, late in Double Jeopardy (about half of the answres gone) with a lead of a couple-thou, found the Daily Double, and said to Trebek, "Nothing ventured nothing gained" making it a TRUE DAILY DOUBLE, got it wrong, then proceeded to RUN THE TABLE by answering EVERY SINGLE REMAINING CLUE and regaining his lead. He was like the '99-'00 Lakers. NUTS.

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Took me awhile to know wtf you were talking about, jordan.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

soul patch! thank you! i know it's unrelated to this thread, but i saw a guy with one today & all i could think of was "flavor saver" & i knew they had another name . . .

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 20:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Ken Jennings is a machine

daziz, Thursday, 24 June 2004 06:34 (twenty-one years ago)

does he always bet the same amount on each daily double? like 2400 on the first, 3600 on the next? I assumed he does since Alex said "I had a feeling you'd bet that". That's the only sign of OCD I can see in him.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 24 June 2004 06:39 (twenty-one years ago)

He tends to be the amount that will give him a multiple of $5000 with a right answer. He just bet $1801 to break that pattern, though -- the first sign that he knows he's a monster and he's just fucking around with the alleged competition. Will he eventually lose out of boredom?

You mean Frank, the NYC transit cop ca. 1989, is no longer the all-time earnings winner?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 24 June 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Well not only is the 5-day limit gone, but all the dollar values of the questions have been doubled.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 24 June 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

It seems like if they were going to be serious about it, they would keep separate records for the five-day-champion-limit era and the current gonzo stay-on-as-long-as-you're-winning era. IT'S ONLY FAIR!

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Thursday, 24 June 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

When did they start doubling the dollar values? It's been like that for a few years now, hasn't it? I knew a guy who was on the show in early 2002, and I think that was the first time I realized that the change had been made.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 24 June 2004 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

shoulda raised the values, but kept the 5-day limit.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 24 June 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

The theory in our house is that this man will not lose until my dad, who has not missed a Final Jeopardy question (er answer...whatever) in 24 years of watching the show religiously, gets off his ass and gets on the throne.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 24 June 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I think your dad is too old to have the necessary quick reflexes.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 24 June 2004 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Isn't there a light that goes on or off as soon as the question is open for answering? I mean when the answer is ready for questioning. or something.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 24 June 2004 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah this guy is like a answering-in-the-form-of-a-question MACHINE.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 24 June 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm happy to report that Frank Spangenberg (the NYC transit cop) is still in the Top 10, even with the doubled dollar values of the last few years:

NAME/SEASON/TOTAL
Tom Walsh 20 $ 184,900
Brian Weikle 19 $ 149,200
Arthur Gandolfi 20 $ 137,300
Sean Ryan 20 $ 123,797
Chris Miller 20 $ 123,597
John Beck 19 $ 117,099
Scott "Renzo" Renzoni 20 $ 112,998
Seth Alcorn 19 $ 106,400
Frank Spangenberg 6 $ 102,597
Tom Baker 20 $ 102,300

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 24 June 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I think that dude Brian Weikle is from here; if it's the same dude I think it is, I've been drunk with him before!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 24 June 2004 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

That's pretty awesome, Nick. I just checked the full list of champions and discovered that the dude I know won $54,000, but that's only good for 133rd of all-time!

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 24 June 2004 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

So you're saying your dad would just intimidate him into not answer, er, questioning? I'd like to see that: the other two contestants standing 5 feet back from their signaling buttons, whispering the correct responses to your dad when he shoots them a cold glare.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 24 June 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Naw, I think he'd just get frustrated when The Dude Who Just Won't Lose answered rapidly, and then when he finally buzzed in before the dude he'd yellspike the answer like a volleyball in Alex Trebek's smug-ass face.

Anyone watching Jeopardy! Masters? I don't like that they reveal the locations of the Daily Doubles to the audience, but I kind of like the whole rankings and leaderboard setup. And of course it's extremely entertaining.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Wednesday, 10 May 2023 15:45 (two years ago)

I kinda like the DD reveal, it added some anticipation when one of the players was running down a category & everyone missed the second to last answer so they decided to try a new category, but we knew the last answer was the DD just hanging out there waiting for them to come back to it.

BrianB, Wednesday, 10 May 2023 16:35 (two years ago)

Qeq-hauau-ent-pehui (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 10 May 2023 16:55 (two years ago)

Is it just me, or do the questions on Masters seem more difficult than on regular Jeopardy? I find myself muttering "those prizes are rightfully mine" much less when watching Masters.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 11 May 2023 15:11 (two years ago)

The questions this week have run the gamut, but I imagine everyone who watches Jeopardy has categories they're much better at than others

seen a few stories today about mayim, who was hosting the final weeks of regular jeopardy this season, walking out on the final week of shoots in solidarity with striking writers, and ken stepping in to shoot the episodes in her place. if true, that sucks. jeopardy's a union show. i loathe her as a host, but full-on respect to her for this.

fact checking cuz, Thursday, 11 May 2023 21:01 (two years ago)

So how about James's Final Jeopardy zinger last night? All in good fun, of course, but I feel like Ken was kinda stumped on how to respond.

niall horanburger (cryptosicko), Tuesday, 16 May 2023 15:36 (two years ago)

BrianB, Tuesday, 16 May 2023 23:58 (two years ago)

So how about James's Final Jeopardy zinger last night? All in good fun, of course, but I feel like Ken was kinda stumped on how to respond.

not really enjoying how hard they're trying to turn every player into a personality in this tournament. i think part of jeopardy's charm is how the gameplay is so rigid and formulaic that only tiny bits of personality are allowed to slip through, and only in certain moments. there's a built-in mystery as to who these people are. you're always left wanting more.

i liked every one of these six players more when i knew them less.

also i find james' zingers not all that zingy. a little cringe even.

Apparently the clues were all written before the strike, and there were only a few episodes left to film. I can see why it's maybe not a good look to go forward with production, but does that count as crossing the picket line? (I genuinely don't know.)

I found out about this via a Jim Jarmusch post on Instagram (which he appears to have deleted). Claimed she was the best Jeopardy host of all time.

Real head scratcher, that.

circa1916, Saturday, 16 December 2023 15:59 (one year ago)

Jeopardy!'s official Facebook account posted a response (which they even formatted like one of their answer screens) that explained Bialik is only out as a syndicated host, reasoning that they wanted more consistency or continuity next season, and said they hope she will be back as a prime-time special host. (Also I guess they consider the exclamation point in their show's name to be mandatory, leading to some awkward looking punctuation in their response.)

Possible Jarmusch deleted that post simply because he found out she wasn't actually out of the show altogether.

Richards has joined The Daily Wire as its next president of Daily Wire entertainment and chief content officer, leading all the entertainment operations of the conservative media company founded by Ben Shapiro.
