Impulse Purchases

Have you bought anything you probably didn't exactly need recently? Felt guilty afterwards?

Today I got this dvd player that does divx and stuff too, and even though it was "only" $70, I feel really stupid and awful. If I had a budget plan sort of thing worked out it might be okay, but since I don't I'm not sure if my wife and I will be eating ramen in a couple months because I had to go and buy a stupid toy.

Not recentlly, but yes....and I always feel guilty about it.

I recently totally, textbook impulse-bought this:

And never looked back. It's probably the only impulse purchase I've ever made that DIDN'T imbue me throughout with guilt.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Sunday, 18 July 2004 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Only mine's knobs aren't red, they're black.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Sunday, 18 July 2004 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, the fretboard is black as well.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Sunday, 18 July 2004 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

The only reason you should feel guilty about buying that would be if you didn't know how to play it (I assume, however, that you do).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 18 July 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I can play it! It's an great bass, especially because it's super lightweight but sounds fantastic. You can play it for hours and hours. I've never been able to find such a combo that pleased me as much as this one does. Oh, God, I'm gonna go hug it right now.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Sunday, 18 July 2004 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

And I got it for 200 dollars!

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Sunday, 18 July 2004 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's beautiful, Roxy. I wouldn't fret about it (pardon the awful pun).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 18 July 2004 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

No. I just dream about impulse purchases, and then when I buy something I've been planning to buy (like I've been saving for an Ipod for months), then I resent that I can't make any impulse purchases. And I sort of really want a cell phone next year, it would be SO much more convenient than a calling card, but with only 8 hours of work-study a week that would basically kill my potential for a) saving or b) impulse purchases.

Maria (Maria), Sunday, 18 July 2004 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Um, lesson being impulse purchases or good or you will become really crotchety. But about a month ago I bought an unnecessary random popcorn novel, so I guess that counts.

Ok...

TheRealJMod (TheRealJMod), Sunday, 18 July 2004 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

My most recent impulse buy: brushed steel salt and pepper grinders that I spotted in the supermarket yesterday whilst getting groceries, for £2.45. I don't feel at all guilty about it.

caitlin (caitlin), Sunday, 18 July 2004 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

A surf green jazzmaster, oh yes:

I went to the shops for a magazine and a pack of gum, and came home with a mint green Jazzmaster!

I don't feel guilty at all. I am still glad, to this day that I did it, because that guitar has brought me so much joy.

i'm pretty good at making impulse purchases that are cheap enough that i don't have to get stressed about them. like earrings for £4 from dorthy perkins that are shiny and sparkly and i get compliments on, and don't have to think about whether i should let myself buy them or not!

colette (a2lette), Monday, 19 July 2004 09:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I impulse buy constantly if only to make up for my lack of girlfriend/car/drug habbit and I have no guilt or shame.

My last one was this morning where I pointlessly purchased yet another C++ guide to add to my already overweight book shelf of unread programming resources.

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 19 July 2004 09:38 (twenty-one years ago)

A really, really supercool vintage Nick Cave shirt. what a find. yay!

daria g (daria g), Monday, 19 July 2004 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I bought a $4.00 bar of soap at Whole Foods yesterday because it smelled amazing. And then I went home and showered, and I tried a little of the soap to see if it really did taste good.

j e r e m y (x Jeremy), Monday, 19 July 2004 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i bought a limp bizkit button shirt for £1 once, never regretted it.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 19 July 2004 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)

The knobs on Roxymuzak's bass look like cookie monster's eyes...

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 19 July 2004 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

My impulse purchases are most often records, but because I'm so poor, I feel guilty even for buying a 10 euro discount CD. Especially if it's a bad one.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 19 July 2004 12:28 (twenty-one years ago)

My impulse buys are almost always CD's. I don't even really spend my money on anything else (except for food).

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 19 July 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, technically, I think that Secret Machines CD that turned up in my bag after a night of drinking might have been an impulse purchase, as well!

Ma$onic Boom (kate), Monday, 19 July 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Straight Outta Compton for £4 in HMV on saturday. was walking up to counter with other purchases, saw it in the cheapo bucket and just picked it up, split second decision.

and sat there listening to it on sunday afternoon and all i could think of was the opening sequence of Office Space.

khaki t-shirt for £3 in peacocks. went back a week later and bought another identical one. 8)

Funnily enough, I drove through Compton yesterday - that's Compton the small, quaint village just outside Godalming.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 19 July 2004 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I live in "Little Compton"

i've just ordered the following on impulse:
"Entertainment" - Gang of Four
"The Best of the Monochrome Set" - Monochrome Set
"Only Fun in Town, the/ Sorry for Laughing" - Josef K
"Rough Trade Shops - Post Punk Vol.1".

Guess which band i was listening to as i ordered them.

leigh (leigh), Monday, 19 July 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

i love that monochrome set best-of.

i bought a pesto chicken pasta salad on the 3:35 virgin pendolino from glasgow to euston, and i felt kind of guilty about it

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 19 July 2004 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

i just decided i really had to have pancakes for lunch because i heard the word "pancakes" on tv and said HOLY SHIT THAT SOUNDS GOOD.

Nick Apollo Forte (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 19 July 2004 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Impulse pancakes.

i felt too guilty about the prices in the cafe car on the 9:35 to buy anything. i made up for this at euston by spending 3.99 on grapes. since when did they get so valuable?

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 19 July 2004 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i went hunting on thursday for a particular game, and wound up being exposed to too many others, so i came home with:

i later found the game i was looking for online. oops. oh well.

Kingfish von Bandersnatch (Kingfish), Monday, 19 July 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I have found peace with my DVD/DIVX player after finding that once I burned all the movies I had on my hard drives to disk I suddenly have a pretty sizable collection. Plus I watched a romantic movie (Days of Being Wild) with my wife who hadn't been enthusiastic about it so now everything's leveled.
