CALL TO ARMS: Stress-test the new ILX server!

So I've finally got the new server configured and snugly installed deep in the bowels of Melbourne's stock exchange centre. Now, while I'm pretty sure this machine kicks ass, I'd really appreciate it if as many ILXors as possible could post like, well, a lot.

I have loaded the database as of the 30th onto the new server, which is located here:

Stress-testing has now completed. Thanks!!

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE ABOVE PAGE HAS A PINK BACKGROUND. This means that it is the test server.

IF YOU START POSTING LIKE (more of) AN IDIOT (than normal) ON THE REAL ILX YOU WILL BE ATTENDED TO.

Thanks! :)

Andrew (enneff), Sunday, 1 August 2004 23:43 (twenty-one years ago)

If all goes well with this stress-test (which I assume will last a few hours) then I'll be switching it over this afternoon (my time).

Andrew (enneff), Sunday, 1 August 2004 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

so are these temporary posts then? we should just, like, LET LOOSE?

Kim (Kim), Sunday, 1 August 2004 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Bam! I think I got first post =)

Heh the pink makes the site look like some bank form.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 1 August 2004 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Yep. All the posts ON THE PINK SITE ONLY will be nuked when I re-import the current data.

ILX ON THE WHITE BACKGROUND WILL CONTINUE AS NORMAL.

Andrew (enneff), Sunday, 1 August 2004 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

(PS it seems nice and speedy so far Andrew... anything particular testwise you'd have us do? I do bloody test script QA shit all the time at work, soooo used to this)

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 1 August 2004 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Stress-testing has now completed. Thanks!!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 1 August 2004 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

A lot of posting is good, a lot of page viewing, browisng. Post to multiple threads, etc. I want to simulate a full ILX load on this bitch.

Andrew (enneff), Sunday, 1 August 2004 23:49 (twenty-one years ago)

(or preferably a >full ILX load)

Andrew (enneff), Sunday, 1 August 2004 23:49 (twenty-one years ago)

It seems like there should be some way to do this automatically.

Dan I., Monday, 2 August 2004 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Well it certainly kicks donkey.

Careful with that Almanac Eugene (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 2 August 2004 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuck. It's making me laugh hysterically and everyone's looking at me.

Careful with that Almanac Eugene (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 2 August 2004 00:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Then our work here is done =)

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 2 August 2004 00:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Yay us!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 August 2004 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I just made a post to test-ILM as well, I hope thats ok?

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 2 August 2004 00:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 August 2004 00:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Smooth criminal, more like!

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 2 August 2004 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Man that test server is like evil coffee. Make it stop.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 2 August 2004 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Posting there has been most refreshing.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 August 2004 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

now i know how the noize doodz feel.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 2 August 2004 00:56 (twenty-one years ago)

they must do a lot of speed.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 2 August 2004 00:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I am sad that I am the only one who has posted on the stress-test noizeboard

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 2 August 2004 00:58 (twenty-one years ago)

KEEP THE NUTS A FLOWIN'!!!

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 2 August 2004 01:02 (twenty-one years ago)

(the server is holding up fantastically, by the way - it hasn't dropped below 90% idle)

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 2 August 2004 01:02 (twenty-one years ago)

the new board is amazing

Maneating Leopards of India (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 2 August 2004 01:06 (twenty-one years ago)

It's already better than ILX!

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 2 August 2004 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I feel like I'm part of some social psychology experiment. "Do whatever you feel like doing! Yes, really, no one will stop you."

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 2 August 2004 01:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm in serious danger of actually crying tears of laughter.

I thought the noize dudes board was that place?

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 2 August 2004 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope that I am not placed in the placebo group.

jim wentworth (wench), Monday, 2 August 2004 01:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't read the noize board, it hurts my eyes...

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 2 August 2004 01:21 (twenty-one years ago)

How do the noize dudes have the energy to keep that board going day after day? The pink ILX tired me in 30 minutes.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 2 August 2004 01:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Berocca.

Careful with that Almanac Eugene (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 2 August 2004 01:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Bunzzzzz O)))))))))))))))))) (ex machina), Monday, 2 August 2004 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

so i ran searches on eight common four letter words simultaneously!

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 2 August 2004 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, searches would be a good idea hey - test the database and whatnot.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 2 August 2004 01:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Everyone's stopped posting already.

Careful with that Almanac Eugene (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 2 August 2004 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

It seems like there should be some way to do this automatically.
<warning warning web geekiness>
Stress testing that doesn't resemble real-world behavior is dead easy. One of the simpliest ways is to download "ab" from apache.org, point it at a web server, and sit back & watch... but that's not a good indicaiton that a server will stand up well when real traffic hits it. Repetitive fetching of the same URL won't usually expose web caching issues, database locks, some wonky apache configurations, and other stupid stuff. The good way to do stress testing is to use some software that plays-back your old query logs against your new server, but sped up. There's a couple software packages that will do that, or you can roll your own without massive difficulty.

</web geekiness> ;-)

lyra (lyra), Monday, 2 August 2004 01:59 (twenty-one years ago)

here's an idea:

everyone make image links on threads to searches that would return a lot of results.

Bunzzzzz O)))))))))))))))))) (ex machina), Monday, 2 August 2004 02:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Right you are, lyra! The main speed bottlenecks on ILX are database updates/inserts. Continuous fetching of threads would only stress the query-cache, which I already know works quite well.

Anyway, from the testing we've done so far (thanks everyone!) it looks like the new server is fucking hardcore. I'll pull the switchover (during which there'll be something like 40 minutes downtime) sometime in the next 24 hours.

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 2 August 2004 02:27 (twenty-one years ago)

By all means, keep testing folks. I want this thing to be bug-free by the time it goes live.

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 2 August 2004 02:27 (twenty-one years ago)

can i moderate faux-ilx? would that help stress test?

purple patch (electricsound), Monday, 2 August 2004 02:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah if we're looking for bugs should we be testing:

- load
- logins work properly
- test of stuff like banning/thread locking
- what html does and doesnt work/is allowed
- the search engine

etc

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 2 August 2004 02:37 (twenty-one years ago)

- load - it's dandy
- logins work properly - yes

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 2 August 2004 02:39 (twenty-one years ago)

So the image-posting deal has been cleared up?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 August 2004 02:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Well I can paste images using ihttp but I assume the usual img src is still off?

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 2 August 2004 02:42 (twenty-one years ago)

It's all lookin' good folks!

Full release, baby. And it's done.

By the way, stress-testing has finished!!!

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 2 August 2004 05:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooh I must tell Nick. not that it's much use to him, we havent a machine that'll handle doom3 terribly well. Pity.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 2 August 2004 05:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Rock on the stress-testing. So the switch will happen sometime shortly and ILX will begin world conquest imminently? Good, good...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 August 2004 05:23 (twenty-one years ago)

it happened already nedster!

purple patch (electricsound), Monday, 2 August 2004 05:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I see this now! And I see the AUSTRALIANS are reaping the benefit of it. I KNOW WHAT HAPPENED ON THE PINK BOARD OF DOOM. You ignore meatiness at your peril.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 August 2004 05:37 (twenty-one years ago)

But of course! I wont pike like I did when Colin came down from Sydney to visit now, will I *mumbletey*.

One of these days I will come a-visitin. If I could, I'd to to San Fran with my partner next March for that games dev con he's going to (I wish it was called BiMonSciFiCon but it isn't).

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 2 August 2004 05:41 (twenty-one years ago)

(to to? Oh you know what I meant. That pink-ILX fried my brane)

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 2 August 2004 05:42 (twenty-one years ago)

A great name though! Just come to next year's ComicCon but spend a week or two in LA beforehand, and we'll toast y'all. Besides, Di will be here in October and she can report on our goodness.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 August 2004 05:43 (twenty-one years ago)

aw i missed out on breaking new ilx fun haha.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 2 August 2004 10:57 (twenty-one years ago)

purple patch (electricsound), Monday, 2 August 2004 11:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Did anyone save any of the pink ILX messages, for Excelsior or other such usage? Once we let our ids ran wild, some of the threads were actually rather cool.

I asked the question because this thread is about a server, and I don't seem to know what a server is. I wonder whether anyone will try to enlighten me, about it.

the pinefox, Monday, 2 August 2004 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

A server's a computer, one which is set up so it can be accessed by other computers and which stores information. So the ILX machine is a web server -- it's accessed by other computers through the Web/Internet, while storing the ILX archives as well. At least, that's how I would describe it! There's more to it technically.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 August 2004 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't know that.

Does it mean that if someone smashed up that computer, all of ilx would be destroyed with it?

the pinefox, Monday, 2 August 2004 13:12 (twenty-one years ago)

how does AOL browse the internet web?

Typhoon is Coming!!! :O (ex machina), Monday, 2 August 2004 13:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Unless ILX was copied or mirrored at another computer, yes. There are sites like archive.org which purport to try and copy every web page ever, but I have doubts they've copied every thread posted here ever, for one thing.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 August 2004 13:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Typhoon is Coming!!! :O (ex machina), Monday, 2 August 2004 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

In that case, I think I fear for ilx. I think I thought it existed in some other way than on one computer somewhere.

the bellefox, Monday, 2 August 2004 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Fret not. Andrew hosts the computer via the folks at Keypoint, and as they have many such servers there, Keypoint are not anxious to have someone come in and wreak havoc.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 August 2004 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 2 August 2004 13:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I thought it existed in some other way than on one computer somewhere.

It does exist in the form of backups on many machines I have access to.

What if terrorists blow up the Aussie stock exchange?

Then ILX will be the last bloody thing on my mind, sorry! :-)
