OK, I've got OS X and most of the Apple crap running ok. XCode is installed and I'm downloading Fink, X11 and Software Updates.

I'll probably be downloading OpenOffice/StarOffice soon.

But uh, what other Mac software is good?

Camino vs. Firefox?

(PS - Dialup sux)

Portage for OS X has promise in the fink competitors field.

Don't even think of downloading Open office on diallup it's 300+Mb.

Holy Crap! Typhoon is Coming!!! :O (ex machina), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

seriously are you still using dialup? downloading major software apps is a tall order for dialup. i suspect i could only recommend the obvious stuff that you're already familiar with.

however: do you actually have a means of downloading software for free? if so, perhaps you could download a slightly older version of norton for me? instead of simply ridiculing me for using (god forbid) an older operating system on the thread where i make a request not dissimilar to yours on this thread?

Holy Crap! Typhoon is Coming!!! :O (ex machina), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

seriously, it galls me that you use my request as an excuse for meanspirited hijinks and then you post a similar request and expect everyone to offer you sincere advice. i'd be happy to offer advice if i had some to offer, but likewise i'd perhaps appreciate a similar attitude in return. do you understand this?

amateur!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Amateurist - I don't have a way of PIRATING SOFTWARE, sorry.

Holy Crap! Typhoon is Coming!!! :O (ex machina), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i though that's what you're referring to on this thread. sorry.

amateur!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

So basically, this is the thread where Jon gets us to tell him what software we use so then he can mock us for using it? Jon, do you have pubes yet? Have you started the JON PUBEWATCH 04 thread on the pickle bar board yet?

Nick's just mad he's the only person (other than Randy) to be banned from that board.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

You mean after I basically ASKED to be banned from the board? Why would I be mad about that?

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know! I wouldn't claim to understand you, dude.

I know you look like Greg Dulli, and that's enough.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Greg Dulli allowed on the Noise Board?

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuck no.

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, at least this thread is off its track.

Anyway, back on topic!

This Mac shit is like bizarro Linux.

Holy Crap! Typhoon is Coming!!! :O (ex machina), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

seriously, jon, do you have any advice to offer someone with a problematic powerbook with os9 (no option to upgrade to osx sadly)? short of spending more money, of which i have none?

amateur!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I know next to nothing about pre-OS X Macs other than "secret about box", "rebuilding the desktop", "hold down shift to disable extensions"

Holy Crap! Typhoon is Coming!!! :O (ex machina), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

ok. yeah, tried all those, but thanks. normally i'd be ok but my norton cd is all messed up.

Quicksilver rocks for launching stuff quickly but I don't use it for anything beyond launching apps and bookmarks quickly

what do you use it for

Does anybody know of any decent OCR shareware/freeware for Mac OSX?

this is meant for annoying computer questions for lazy technophobes, but here goes:

i got an ibook. i put a dvd in it. idvd then asked me to assign a region code out of 1-2-3-4-5-6, and said i could change it only FIVE more times.

how do i set it to region 0?

N_RQ, Thursday, 31 March 2005 09:00 (twenty years ago)

complicatedly, using a firmware & a software patch. I think.

you can use VLC (freely downloadable) which is a multi-region DVD player.

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 31 March 2005 09:07 (twenty years ago)

easiest way: pop in a region o dvd. oh hold on, do you want to make it region free? i don't think that's possible.

nathalie doing a soft foot shuffle (stevie nixed), Thursday, 31 March 2005 09:09 (twenty years ago)

what? it IS possible. YAY. :-)

nathalie doing a soft foot shuffle (stevie nixed), Thursday, 31 March 2005 09:09 (twenty years ago)

boo-yah. VLC download it is. chz!

N_RQ, Thursday, 31 March 2005 09:11 (twenty years ago)

what is a region 0 DVD?

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 31 March 2005 09:15 (twenty years ago)

but yeah, there is a way to patch yr drive but unless yr ed/tombot (hi ed!) (hi tom!) it is super complicated and I just use VLC for all my region-free needs.

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 31 March 2005 09:16 (twenty years ago)

i think there is such as thing as a 'region 0' dvd (ie plays anywhere) but 'region 0' = mythical land without copyright etc?

N_RQ, Thursday, 31 March 2005 10:32 (twenty years ago)

Yes, sorry about the confusion.

nathalie doing a soft foot shuffle (stevie nixed), Thursday, 31 March 2005 10:36 (twenty years ago)

I have a region-free DVD player (actually Ally has it) so I've never done this, oddly enough, though to make my DVD player Region 0 (region-free) I had to learn a stupid code to input on the remote and then access some kind of secret submenu. I don't do anything cool with my computer honestly. Google will tell you what to do, I bet.

I have a couple of Region 0 DVDs at home actually. I think my version of The Big Lebowski is Region 0! Perhaps I should consider using my computer to watch it. Eh.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 31 March 2005 12:38 (twenty years ago)

Regarding Mac DVD Players...

There is no way to actually set it to 0. The newer DVD hardware cross-checks the DVD's region against the software/firmware-set region. If they don't match, it will give you the option to reset your region (if you still have changes left).

What the firmware revision does is makes the firmware-set region unlocked. Which means that you can then use a program, like RegionX (my rec, as well), to change the firmware-region limitlessly. The only annoying thing is that you have to fire up RegionX whenever you run out of changes. You can't run RegionX without the firmware patch, and the firmware patch alone is useless. You need first the patch, then RegionX.

Also, MAKE CERTAIN THAT YOUR DVD MODEL IS THE RIGHT ONE FOR THE FIRMWARE PATCH! Else you'll have no more DVD player, natch.
