PlayStation2 - game suggestions for a newbie!

OK, so I've got a PS2 for the weekend (borrowed from work) since no-one uses it here. You see, I'm trying to avoid going out and spending money, and I figure renting a couple of addictive games is just the ticket. (and if any of you Londoners know good places to rent PS2 games in town, suggestions would be welcome...)

I know there are tons of PS2/game threads, but they are a bit over my head, since I am by no means a proper 'gamer'. Overly complicated games are no good to me. The last game I played was Halo on the X-Box, which was fun. I played PS1 games a few years ago, but before that it was probably Final Fantasy on Super-Nintendo and then my Intellivision as a kid (!). So yeah, I like games, but am a bit out of touch with what is hip with the kids these days. Basically I want to walk and/or drive around and kill things/blow up stuff. GTA is a given, but which one is best? Alternatively, I'm always up for a good adventure game with cool looking graphics, provided it's not too complex (I don't have a lot of time). Oh, and there's no memory card - is that going to be a huge problem? I don't want to buy extra crap.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 12 August 2004 08:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, I could maybe lend you a couple and a game card for the weekend as I won't be using mine, are you around town tomorrow evening?

Porkpie (porkpie), Thursday, 12 August 2004 08:14 (twenty-one years ago)

same here rob.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 12 August 2004 08:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I am indeed around - the lending of things to me is a kind and generous offer (and saves me renting hassles). Whaddya got?

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 12 August 2004 08:17 (twenty-one years ago)

GTA3
GTA3 vice city
pro evo soccer 3 (and 2)
WWE Smackdown HERE COMES THE PAIN

and omg singstar!!

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 12 August 2004 08:20 (twenty-one years ago)

and various editions of DDR of course.. and a slightly duffed up mat.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 12 August 2004 08:21 (twenty-one years ago)

lemme think

GTA3 & Vice city
pro evo 1 & 3
tiger woods 2003
NBA 2004 (or 3, can't remember)
Madden 02
(yes there is a theme here)
some cheapo baseball thing which is odd and quite Japanese
gran turismo 2 and 3
secret weapons over Normandy
a coupkle of tony hawks games

I'll see what else I can remember

Porkpie (porkpie), Thursday, 12 August 2004 08:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Buy a memory card, Rob, otherwise you won't be able to save games.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 12 August 2004 08:24 (twenty-one years ago)

you guys rock! since it's just me playing i'll pass on sports games (i do love them though).

hmm... now i'm thinking that i'll keep the console for a while, since it just collects dust here at the office (we did a big project for Sony and got it free, with a game called 'The Getaway' which looks cool cos you can drive recklessly around London). of course knowing my history with games, i should probably limit this experiment to a weekend, or i will wind up losing a lot of sleep/missing work/etc...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 12 August 2004 08:30 (twenty-one years ago)

oh yeah i have the getaway too (but so do you) haha what a fantastic game, GTA cum eastenders.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 12 August 2004 08:35 (twenty-one years ago)

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 12 August 2004 08:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Jak & Daxter!! Ape Escape 2! For serious, kiddo! Although you should have a memory card for them... they're pretty cheap though!

Sarah-pie, Thursday, 12 August 2004 09:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Ape Escape 2 is a brilliant game. I got really hooked on it for no apparent reason.

___ (___), Thursday, 12 August 2004 09:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Me too! And then Tom moved out and took his PS2 with him just as we were stuck at the giant yellow monkey! Gawd. I loves those apes.

ooo-oo, Thursday, 12 August 2004 09:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I am intrigued by this 'Ape Escape'. Is it anything like Donkey Kong?

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 12 August 2004 09:51 (twenty-one years ago)

If it is, i will have to invest in it!

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 12 August 2004 09:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Hitman: Contracts

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Thursday, 12 August 2004 10:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Titman: Cumsacs

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 12 August 2004 10:21 (twenty-one years ago)

in ape escape you have to round up escaped, er, apes. run around a 3d world, a net in each hand, scoopity-do.

my recommendation would be SSX Tricky (Tricky is probably easier and flashier than ssx1 and friendlier than ssx3). pick-up-and-play snowboarding, huge and varied tracks, smoooth and breathtakingly fast.

a secondary question: is there a ps2 equivalent to mario party? one of those compendiums of lots of little 5 minute party games? i think i saw one once with an impossible japanese name...

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 12 August 2004 10:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Ape Escape is absolutely nothing like donkey kong. The game is really, in all honesty, pretty crap if you explain it. But it is hugely addictive. The concept is that you have to catch lots of monkeys, who hide sometimes. And then you can use them to form a football team and things.

Was the big yellow monkey the one with toothache where you had to knock them out with the frisbee?

is the Getaway actually good? all the reviews of it were really bad, but I like the idea of it having almost every single street in london represented.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 12 August 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm jealous of PS2 owners not only for having the Mega Man collection, but for getting the Street Fighter collection very soon while I have to wait months and months for the Xbox version.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 12 August 2004 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

for party games there's the Hyper Bishi Bashi Challenge!

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 12 August 2004 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't be jealous. MMC is maddeningly difficult. Also, the SFC has been delayed to the point where I DONT EVEN KNOW WHAT THAT IS ANYMORE.

dean? (deangulberry), Thursday, 12 August 2004 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

is the Getaway actually good? all the reviews of it were really bad, but I like the idea of it having almost every single street in london represented.

it's OK - the gameplay isn't really amazing, the actual game bit is very linear - but the drama of it is impressive (it's got an actual plot and everything) and there are moments of suspense etc when you play (and it's just hard enough so that you don't complete it in one day)

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 12 August 2004 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

but for rob's weekend gaming extravaganza it's almost perfect

p.s. the london representation is actually slightly disappointing - all the mainstreets are really accurate but if you want to say go down a sideroad off oxford street they just don't exist!!! (i.e. none of your wardour street hanway road etc.) and more annoyingly it cuts off just before my old work place (on hampstead road) when i first got it. but otherwise it's really cool! esp driving into waterloo.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 12 August 2004 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't be jealous. MMC is maddeningly difficult.

Only as difficult as the originals, right? I would probably just play 2 & 3 over and over, since I haven't tried many of the later games and MM1 is clearly not meant to be beaten by human thumbs.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 12 August 2004 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I guess it is only difficult for me, since I never played MM as a kid. Surprisingly, the menu layout is great and easy to manipulate. The autosave function is excellent as well, since passwords = bitches.

dean? (deangulberry), Thursday, 12 August 2004 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

ape escape is pure fun. you have to prevent apes from escaping

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 13 August 2004 02:28 (twenty-one years ago)

four months pass...
revive

(possible rentals)
spiderman2, hulk, indiana jones, some batman game

outlogged, Sunday, 9 January 2005 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Spiderman 2's great initially, but feels a bit shallow and repetitive after a while. If you're only renting, that shouldn't matter.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 9 January 2005 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Spiderman 2 is the only decent game in that pile.

If you can find Katamari Damacy or Alien Hominid, rent those.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Sunday, 9 January 2005 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Burnout 3! Burnout 3! The most intense racing game ever! Fuck it, the best racing game ever!

!!!

TomB (TomB), Sunday, 9 January 2005 23:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Metal Gear Solid 3! Metal Gear Solid 3! The most intense stealth game ever! Fuck it, the best stealth game ever!

!!!

xAARONHZx, EXTREME ILXOR LOOK ALL CAPS (AaronHz), Monday, 10 January 2005 00:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Burnout 3 is brilliant BUT my god the F1 car handles shittily.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 10 January 2005 00:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Katamari Damacy

LSD ARISTOCAT (ex machina), Monday, 10 January 2005 01:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Ratchet 3 = so, so good.

Spiderman 2 is good fun for a rental because:

. once you get the hang of it, swinging around the city really feels as graceful and free as the films made it look.
. the voiceover/instructions, and the hint nuggets all over the city, are voiced by Bruce Campbell!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 10 January 2005 01:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Burnout 3 is great. Football (soccer?) fans, I strongly suggest Winning Eleven 7.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 10 January 2005 03:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Dom otm about the F1 cars in Burnout3, but great game nonetheless.

Transformers! Nobody has mentioned Transformers! TRANSFORMERS!!

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 10 January 2005 10:28 (twenty-one years ago)

eleven months pass...
So I just got my own PS2, and I suspect my tastes in games are very different from the people earlier in this thread--I got Katamari Damacy and Dance Dance Revolution, & want more games that are weird in the sense (but not in the way) that those are weird. No interest in first-person shooters, no interest in blowing stuff up, no interest in sports or racing games. What should I try?

Douglas (Douglas), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 06:49 (twenty years ago)

might i direct you yonder:

my uncle and my 12 year old cousin (female) just got a PS2....

also, Rez, Dark Cloud 2, Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Psychonauts, etc etc etc

kingfish holiday travesty (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 07:26 (twenty years ago)

Douglas, it's your friend JD out in NC. Trust me here: buy Taiko Drum Master. Immediately. It's Dance Dance Revolution with a drum. They supply the drum. They supply the special plastic sticks. You supply the thump thump thump.

If you can find an old game called Rez, it's a huge cult favorite (essentially: techno-based running-down-a-hallway weirdness) but it's out of print I think. I assume you got both Katamari games. Finally, I share your general disinterest in first-person shooters, but you really ought to make an exception for Resident Evil 4, which is astonishing, though you probably shouldn't play it when the kid's awake, because it's genuinely terrifying.

Mr Straight Toxic (ghostface), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

I just got a playstation 2 as well, and my first two games are Katamari and Resident Evil 4.

RE4 is amazing. I haven't even put Katamari in yet (though I've heard that's great too).

Super Cub (Debito), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...

Ok i own and am now thoroughly bored with:

Gran Turismo 4
Katamari Damacy
Shadow the Colossus
GTA: San Andreas
Lego Star Wars 1 & 2
God of War 1 & 2

waht next??

kinda feeling something with guns right now

gff, Monday, 3 September 2007 00:28 (eighteen years ago)

ghost in the shell

it's a ps1 game but i have never played any other shooty game that comes close (not that that's saying much).. ff to about the 3:20 mark in that video

Tracer Hand, Monday, 3 September 2007 01:24 (eighteen years ago)

Best PS2 games of 2007 IMO (do not read if you hate RPGs cuz that's mostly all that comes out anymore):

1. Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3
2. Odin Sphere
3. Ar tonelico :Melody of Elemia
4. GrimGrimoire
5. Rogue Galaxy
6. Tomb Raider Anniversary
7. Wild ARMs 5

And of course GoWII which you already played. Something with guns? Resident Evil 4 or Killer7. Persona 3 has guns but you just use them to shoot yourself in the head over and over and over and over. Wild ARMs has guns too, of course. If it's FPS you want, time to get a 360 and BioShock. There's no competition for it on PS2, and there's Halo 3 coming at the end of the month. The best PS2 FPS are probably the TimeSplitters and Red Faction series, Medal of Honor Frontline and Black, but I can't say I've spent much time with any of them. Metal Gear Solid games have guns, but they're mostly just there in case you suck at the game and are always getting caught until you get to a boss.

marmotwolof, Monday, 3 September 2007 01:25 (eighteen years ago)

Fuck it, every game on my list has guns in some way except for Odin Sphere and GrimGrimoire, which have fairies with crossbows.

marmotwolof, Monday, 3 September 2007 01:30 (eighteen years ago)

Guitar Hero 1
Burnout 3
Tekken 5
Viewtiful Joe
Psychonauts
Gradius 5
Metal Slug Anthology

polyphonic, Monday, 3 September 2007 07:02 (eighteen years ago)

is tomb raider anniversary actually any good? tr ii was the last one i finished, just couldn't get into the others

Tracer Hand, Monday, 3 September 2007 08:15 (eighteen years ago)

Beyond Good and Evil, Disgaea, Gregory Horror Show. All quality games that sold next to nothing.

Duane Barry, Monday, 3 September 2007 09:51 (eighteen years ago)

TR Anniversary is the first game remade by the guys who did TR Legend. So, you get the original Tomb Raider story and locations without the broken controls and crappy graphics. Tons of stuff added to those levels, so you get a good mix of "Hey, I remember this part" and "Whoa, that wasn't there before."

marmotwolof, Monday, 3 September 2007 10:24 (eighteen years ago)

oh boy that does sound good

Tracer Hand, Monday, 3 September 2007 11:46 (eighteen years ago)

the first one had a kind of purity to it (trans: NO DIRTY HUMANGS!!) that was never topped

hopefully they improved the ending?? (i.e. slide down a tunnel.. message appears, "you have won" - or something like that)

Tracer Hand, Monday, 3 September 2007 11:48 (eighteen years ago)

Psychonauts is actually pretty good even though I never finished it. Stupid meat circus (END OF SPOILER)

kv_nol, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 11:15 (eighteen years ago)

i have read reviews of tr anniversary and i'm less enthusiastic now that i've learned the t-rex is INTRODUCED WITH A CUT-SCENE!!?? ARRGHH

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 11:18 (eighteen years ago)

also, fuck a grappling hook

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 11:18 (eighteen years ago)

ico gets closest to the spirit of the original tomb raider than anything else i've played - vast cavernous spaces, terrible and thrilling aloneness, consistent physics that allow you to suss out quickly what can and can't be done, and how to do it

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 11:20 (eighteen years ago)

You don't use the grappling hook all that much in TRA. Still mostly jumpy jumpy, grabby grabby, climby climby. Yeah there is some God of War QTE nonsense. Check it out anyway.

marmotwolof, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 11:23 (eighteen years ago)

also, fuck a grappling hook

-- Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 12:18 (Tuesday, 4 September 2007 12:18)

Also fuck MARKING SPOILERS obviously :(

kv_nol, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 11:43 (eighteen years ago)

every review mentions that, it's part of her equipment!

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 11:44 (eighteen years ago)

I meant the bit about the T-Rex and the end of the original.

kv_nol, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 11:45 (eighteen years ago)

haha oh

i didn't think an 11-year-old game could be spoiled! but sorry about the t-rex thing in the remake - it just was such a massive disappointment to read that i thought it was better to know in advance. sorry though.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 11:46 (eighteen years ago)

I suppose that just because it's old it does feel safe to talk about. Sadly no, I will struggle on and try to enjoy it in spite of your evil actions :)
