Guys, I have to leave ILX

I was just pulled into my boss's office. They've figured out that I've been using Soulseek, writing music reviews and generally misusing the internet at work. They're suspending me till Friday and then I have to go in for a hearing where they'll decide what to do with me.
As far as I know there's nothing harmful on my hard drive - just music and a few word documents. There is a zipped version of Ghostzilla which I've never used but that I'm pretty worried about, and of course Soulseek.
I'm a fucking idiot obviously to think I wouldn't get caught. I guess I knew it would happen eventually - I'm self destructive that way. To be honest I can't bear the job, but it's better than no job at all. I'm hoping they're merciful - I'm going to be straight up with them in the hearing and then just hope they reconsider sacking me.
So now I'm going to spend the next souple of days firing off CVs to various companies. Right now it feels fruitless because any future employer who finds out I got dropped for misusing the internet is not going to be impressed and the hope of a reference from this company will be at it's minimum.
If anyone has any advice here I'd be very grateful. Till then I'm avoiding ILX and other addictive net things for a while. Hopefully I'll be back soon - oh and if any FAPs are going on, please tell me. My address is below.

Seeya

Charlie.

Oops.

Dan Perry the enabler (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 16:18 (twenty years ago)

I'm very sorry to hear that -- best of luck with everything. I hope it works out for you.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 16:19 (twenty years ago)

me too, sorry to hear it.

what is ghostzilla?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 16:20 (twenty years ago)

Suckage. Oddly, I *NEVER* post to ILX from offices when I'm called to work in them.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 16:21 (twenty years ago)

Wow, I'm sure it'll turn out OK - just be careful in future!

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 16:22 (twenty years ago)

I'm sorry to hear this. Best of luck, and I hope you'll be back when things are better.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 16:22 (twenty years ago)

Uhr, so sorry. This is every ILXor's worst nightmare.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 16:22 (twenty years ago)

I am surprised they didn't give you some kind of warning first. :-(

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 16:23 (twenty years ago)

Any company that cares about it enough to fire you should just secure their system and block what they don't want you to use (like GE did when I worked for them). And, if you're getting your work done, they shouldn't care anyway.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 16:23 (twenty years ago)

that sucks, dude. i've only gotten a warning from a super "concerned that i wasn't using my time effectively".

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 16:24 (twenty years ago)

anyway my advice is to be not at all defensive or overly apologetic. if you can get away with it, just play dumb. if you were never specifically told NOT to do any of these things, say you thought it was OK.

If your work performance is good otherwise, play that up.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 16:24 (twenty years ago)

Seriously, I'm sure other people spend the same amount of time on their personal e-mail. You just happen to have a more varied online life to spend your free moments on.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 16:27 (twenty years ago)

You could try explaining yourself by saying that you've been having some personal problems or something and the ILXors are helping you through it and you just lost track of how long you were spending on it. Tell them it's been sorted now and you'll cut down.

It might work....

(Actually, Fritz's advice is probably much better, but I'll not delete this and instead just leave it as an option)

what makes people think his boss is not reading this thread?

// (kephm), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 16:30 (twenty years ago)

Cos bosses cant read ILX threads. I think hope

the impossible shortest special path! (the impossible shortest specia), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 16:38 (twenty years ago)

posting a thread directly after being called into the boss's office over alleged internet misuse does kind of indicate that the boss might just have a point...

mercy deletion, mods?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 16:40 (twenty years ago)

Eveyone wastes time on the internet at work, my supervisor spends probably half his day looking at ESPN, other folks look at cars and motorcycles, whatever kind of news floats your boat. I'm lucky in that at least most of the sites I visit for my fix are geekish enough to be construed as work-related. There are a couple of coworkers here who will blatantly play videogames on their office machine or such as that but the worst I've ever done I think is try to listen to Ally's radio show. And play around with Visio to make stupid photo-comix and satirical network diagrams. I think that using Soulseek to trade and share copywritten material over the office broadband goes well above and beyond what I would do at work, though. ILX and wasting time on impertinent websites is one thing, and I think everybody has done that to some extent. Filesharing is another thing altogether, I mean I personally wouldn't fire you unless you were already on my shit list but I wouldn't exactly keep my voice down either.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 16:46 (twenty years ago)

I've been spending the last two weeks on this one job compiling the list of nominated albums for the ILX '90s poll, searching for apartments, and watching my fantasy baseball team sink out of contention thanks to my lack of a decent closer.

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 16:47 (twenty years ago)

I agree with Tom that Soulseek is what done ya.

I hope everything gets sorted out okay, dl! Just try not to sweat it too much - all your bosses goof off too, so just show them a good attitude and I bet everything's fine.

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 16:52 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, every time I read a long, detailed online article about the Mary Celeste, the Dept of Labor releases new figures on American worker productivity and it goes down, down, down. I think I am personally responsible for a percentage point or two.

Businesses Crippled By ILX

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 16:55 (twenty years ago)

Also what was said above about them having to stick to their stated disciplinary procedures because of possibility of you taking them to tribunal if that's not the case.

I'm sure the only thing they could really fuck you over with is if you ever looked at porn at work. But you will probably get a written warning. It would be a good idea to have a look at your contract tonight to see what their procedure should be. I suspect they have a butterfly on a wheel.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 17:00 (twenty years ago)

Like Kingfish, I was only told that I waste time on the internet due to my speed.. basically my boss was saying "You get as much work done as everyone else, but i see you looking at the internet which means you get be getting MORE DONE." This sucks, dude. I hope you get it sorted out.

Towelette Pettatucci (Homosexual II), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 17:03 (twenty years ago)

I used to work with a guy in the late 90's who said something insulting to a girl in a chat room. The chat room administrator contacted our corporate server guy and we had a big meeting about it. The perp looked painfully embarrassed and didn't talk to anybody for some time.

andy, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 17:05 (twenty years ago)

At my old job, I used to use Kazaa (and before that, Napster) all the time. I never got in trouble for it, but people there were pretty laid-back about that sort of thing. I knew other people there who were doing the same thing. Anyway, sorry to hear the bad news, d.l.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 17:06 (twenty years ago)

Yeeps, sorry to hear that, Dog Latin. Hope it all works out.

Posting at ILX from work = sanity maintainer.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 17:09 (twenty years ago)

Poor old dog latin. Filesharing (well, any software) is blocked from installation by end users at my office, so the tempatation hasn't been there. At an old job, without such restrictions, I used Napster and Audiogalaxy for a while. We got a company-wide note from IT about 4 users of Audiogalaxy using up 50% of our monthly bandwidth or something, but I don't think it was me as I didn't use it that much!

Did they make you sign an IT usage policy statement when you joined? That could make a big difference. I think it's a bit harsh to immediately sack someone without a warning, unless it's porn or something.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 17:11 (twenty years ago)

I was lectured for it at a previous job, god how embarrassing. I feel for you.

Layna Andersen (Layna Andersen), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 17:15 (twenty years ago)

best of luck, dl.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 17:22 (twenty years ago)

yeah, good luck old boy, it's shit, but facing it up is the best way most likely.

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 17:37 (twenty years ago)

Woah, sorry to hear this dude! Totally suxor :(

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 17:56 (twenty years ago)

i have a feeling if i had stayed at the bookstore job in 2001 ilx usage would have gotten me fired. (there were grumblings.) so i just preempted and quit. (which was a mistake.)

sorry dl. i'm sure it will be fine.

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 18:11 (twenty years ago)

Ooh that sucks, I'm sorry to hear it. Hopefully everyone is right and it'll all be ok in the end.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 18:14 (twenty years ago)

Make sure you post what happens!

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 18:22 (twenty years ago)

Too bad dl, hope it works itself out.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 18:25 (twenty years ago)

I cannot even fathom the idea of having ilx time at my office (even if we weren't stuck in an intranet.) Sometimes I'm glad not to have the temptation though.

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 18:32 (twenty years ago)

I don't know what I'd do without ILX at work!

You're in our thoughts, DL!! Good luck.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 18:34 (twenty years ago)

dude hope things turn out ok dl just apologise and say you won't do it again.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 18:34 (twenty years ago)

You should appoint a proxy to post as Dog Latin while you're gone!

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 18:58 (twenty years ago)

why would anyone be on ILX if they weren't at work?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 18:59 (twenty years ago)

boredom. lack of money. lack of viable alternative.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 19:04 (twenty years ago)

You make it sound like petty crime.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 19:06 (twenty years ago)

well if chuck's suspended i'd image we'd be seeing more of him. i am guilty as anyone with the ilx at work - and mssnger chatting time aswell. but i wouldn't dream of trying any filesharing stuff here. where i worked before it was expected that i have napster or limewire on my machine (it was an add agency). hell, most the software at that place was pirated from limewire anyhow. we also had server space set aside for mp3's¡ aahhh how i miss the big agency days.

dysøn (dyson), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 19:06 (twenty years ago)

best of luck, btw, dude.

dysøn (dyson), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 19:08 (twenty years ago)

i feel like in suzy's world people sue each other a lot more often than in my world.

anyway, i would guess it's the file sharing that did it. file sharing has a moral taint to it which the boss could see as implicating him/her as well. i doubt this would have come up if it were just a matter of you visiting web sites a lot.

the place where i work has some kind of filter than blocks "offensive" or "inappropriate" content. but strangely it seems to function not at all. it will block totally innocuous film-critic sites (and robert christgau's site!) while all kinds of semi-pornographic pop ups will appear after visiting geocities or whatever.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 19:12 (twenty years ago)

i guess the thing w/suzy's posts to this and similar threads is that she always seems to suggest some kind of "the bastards can't do this to do, look into your legal rights" scenario when in fact what you've done is exactly the sort of thing people are rightfully fired for. not that i don't sympathize with you. i'd be upset if this happened to me, to say the least.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 19:13 (twenty years ago)

Robert Christgau and film critics: offensive and inappropriate as PROVEN BY SCIENCE!

cousin larry bundgee (bundgee), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 21:17 (eighteen years ago)

jaymc, you hurt me. but what hurts me the most is that you hurt me by hurting yourself even more.

i want to be polite and not offend the community here at the i.l.x. but you know what, jaymc? you're just FULL OF IT. FULL. OF. IT.

every day you used to spread me out and i would cry in ecstasy enjoying your cheeks' caresses, but then i became just like any other inaminate object one night. just like that. after every battle we went through together. i helped you out of many accidents. and you took care of me using only the kindest ways to cleanse me.

i'm happy doing clerical work at Blue Cross Blue Shield Of Illinois. i have many friends who are REAL friends and support me now. i can stay afloat. i'm happy to be the independent bib i am. it wasn't easy. can you comprehend how many prejudices i had to overcome working my way to make it? you wouldn't believe it. i want you to feel my pain, but even i can't tell you the horrible experiences i endured after you left me in the icy waters of the lake that night. it's as if you just dicovered a new bib!

now that the tables have turned, and here you are. keeping tabs on other people on an internet message board. i really hope you are proud of yourself. but just in case you still have some soul left in you, i want to leave you one more thing you could have kept a tab on.

me!

i'm now officially THROUGH with you, jaymc. i don't know if you moved on to just more trampy bibs, or you have a pretend bib. but THIS bib has a hold on life, and i know where i want to head. and frankly, i don't really care about you anymore, jaymc.

goodbye, jaymc. hello, WORLD!
