ckb: what are they running from?
jbr: THEMSELVES

A. Atom Gorgon (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 01:23 (twenty-one years ago)

All of you except your knees.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 01:28 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't think my knees can get any worse than they already are.

A. Atom Gorgon (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 01:28 (twenty-one years ago)

It's an excuse to buy some really nice new clothes and shoes. And maybe a new pair of headphones, the kind that don't fall off.

DUD if you're asthmatic, which I am.

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 01:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic, except not quite as classic as the elliptical machine.

ex-jeremy (x Jeremy), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 01:29 (twenty-one years ago)

W runs.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 01:29 (twenty-one years ago)

elliptical machine feels too easy. you cant really feel superior to people who dont exercise if there is no pain. (unless it's all just a sham to you and then it's fine)

ryan (ryan), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 01:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I feel you with the asthma. I have a heart murmur, and my chest feels like it's about to explode after a couple miles. Consequently, my legs never reach the point of being tired.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I blew out my knees a few years ago - the elliptical machine has saved me from becoming a walking blobbo. If I set the resistence high-enough, keep my heart rate above 85%, and go for about half an hour, I'm totally fine. Otherwise - totally agreed, it feels too easy.

ex-jeremy (x Jeremy), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it bad that when I go to the weight room I like to pretend I'm in a prison yard?

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

that can have many meanings.

ryan (ryan), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 01:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Depends on how far you take the fantasy.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 01:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think I've figured it out myself yet.

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 01:34 (twenty-one years ago)

i like machines that let you know how many calories you're burning (i'm sure they're lying, but it keeps me motivated).

A. Atom Gorgon (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 01:34 (twenty-one years ago)

What you need, jody, is one of those little heart rate things that straps to your arm. Then you can see how many calories you are burning when you are putting away groceries, for example. It's great.

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 01:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh those are horrible. Or at least the ones that break down fat calories seperately. You ride the bike for a half hour on high tension yet only burn like 15 fat calories.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 01:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't McDonalds give those away a while back?

ex-jeremy (x Jeremy), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 01:37 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not about calories anymore. That's so 80s.

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 01:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not sure what it's about now, but calories isn't it.

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Fatkins?

ex-jeremy (x Jeremy), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 01:40 (twenty-one years ago)

You called, chubbychops?

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

The 80s are back, bitch.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah last year maybe.

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Last year is coming back next week. I put the memo on your desk.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 01:42 (twenty-one years ago)

*Looks at desk, sees rebate for contact lenses, pile of CDRS*

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I've been running a little bit lately. Nothing big, just three or four miles a night. It's a good excuse to get some exercise and listen to the Unplayed playlist on my iPod.

However, I wasn't halfway up the block before I felt like someone had shot a bullet through my kneecaps. JUST LIKE THAT.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah... when the knees go, it's very sudden.

ex-jeremy (x Jeremy), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 01:45 (twenty-one years ago)

One good thing about living in the burbs is that within a 15 minute drive there's a couple forest preserves with grassy paths, which are much kinder to the knees than asphalt.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 01:48 (twenty-one years ago)

running on the beach: classic, dud, or only appropriate for the end credits of movies?

A. Atom Gorgon (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 01:56 (twenty-one years ago)

If your knees are already in bad shape, it's probably a really bad idea compared to using a treadmill, bike, or rowing machine. Otherwise, yes, and not just in phyiscal ways.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 02:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Running is a dud for me, as I have problems with turned in hips and leg bones that make me really really knock kneed and pigeon toed, plus I have weak ankles and too-high arches. All in all it adds up to me being far too clumsy for running, plus I get searing pain in my feet after about half an hour on them, even if I'm walking.

I'm thinking of buying an exercise bike tho.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 02:25 (twenty-one years ago)

(wow I made it sound like Im a total retard. I'm not, I just have really wonky legs. I can turn the right one 180 degrees in the opposite direction! Its a cool party trick)

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 02:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I've only done it once, for about 300 yards, but running on the beach is f-in classic.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, and I've actually heard that running on the beach is great for your knees and ankles.

ex-jeremy (x Jeremy), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 02:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i like running. but i hate exercising indoors and i especially hate gyms, so i guess that might increase my liking for running. and i agree, running on the beach with a bit of a bodysurf afterwards is the best!

gem (trisk), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 02:53 (twenty-one years ago)

no, actually going in the water is scary!

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 02:55 (twenty-one years ago)

what!! going in the water is the best part of the run! don't mess with the system oops!

gem (trisk), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 03:01 (twenty-one years ago)

okay, but only up to my thighs. and one leg is always aimed towards shore, ready for a quick getaway.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 03:04 (twenty-one years ago)

hehe good thinking.... in case a starfish or some whitebait or one of those other lethal seacreatures lurking in the shallows tries to attack you.

gem (trisk), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 03:07 (twenty-one years ago)

no the entire ocean tries to attack me.

did i mention i can't swim?

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 03:08 (twenty-one years ago)

most of us got that, I think.

ex-jeremy (x Jeremy), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 03:09 (twenty-one years ago)

If I ever go to Australia, there's no way in hell I'm getting in the water. Yeah I'll just stay on land with all the poisonous snakes.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 03:10 (twenty-one years ago)

oh. i didn't get it, sorry. i am a bit stupid though. i can't imagine not being able to swim so i just assume that everyone can swim. i can imagine the ocean would be kinda scary in that case. i was pretty much brought up at the beach though, being australian with the nice weather and white sand and all.

gem (trisk), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 03:11 (twenty-one years ago)

and well yeah i guess i wouldn't like running in the bush, venomous snakes are a bit on the scary side. much more scary than the ocean.

gem (trisk), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 03:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I...think I'll stick to walking.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 03:15 (twenty-one years ago)

when oops comes to australia we are going to fucking pants him before we dunk him.

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 03:19 (twenty-one years ago)

dunk him pantsless amongst the stingers!

gem (trisk), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 03:21 (twenty-one years ago)

then go for a run.

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 03:23 (twenty-one years ago)

you'll have to catch me first. or lure me over with boozendrugs.

just emailed you gaz. bad news :(

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 03:24 (twenty-one years ago)

surprise me.

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 03:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey I cant really swim either and I practically grew up on the beach (well, we had a beach house down near batemans bay anyhow).

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 03:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Pantsing -- The future of warfare?

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 03:54 (twenty-one years ago)

but do you spread a mixture of bootpolish and toothpaste over the pantsed region?

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 03:56 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost - can't you trayce? did you guys have vacation swimming lessons over there or is that a WA thing? i honestly do assume that everyone can swim as if it's some kind of innate ability, i don't know why.

gem (trisk), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 03:57 (twenty-one years ago)

yet again I find myself at my computer of an evening, drinking beer, and chatting with oops AND antipodeans. It's like the motherfucking circle of life.

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 03:58 (twenty-one years ago)

tar and feather / sackcloth and ashes / bootpolish and toothpaste / gin and tonic / honey and thumbtacks / C and poo / salt and pepper / ben and jerry / simon and garfunkle / spit and dust / army and navy.

ex-jeremy (x Jeremy), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 03:58 (twenty-one years ago)

IM me adam, at jeremy7211 - I wanna ask you something.

ex-jeremy (x Jeremy), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 03:59 (twenty-one years ago)

okay.

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 04:00 (twenty-one years ago)

no matter how much or how little i exercise, i'm still not a better person.

youn, Tuesday, 21 September 2004 05:10 (twenty-one years ago)

gem: if I like fell out of a boat I wouldnt drown or anything, I mean I can go in the water and tool around, but I cant proper do laps or *swim*, you know? Though I loved playing in the surf as a kid. But we did school swimming lessons in summer (or ha! What passes for it in Canberra, being made to swim at 9am on an early summer morning when its only 15 degrees), only I missed out due to middle ear infections. So no I never got proper lessons.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 05:28 (twenty-one years ago)

lots of WA kiddies do "vacation swimming" as well as the school summer swimming, i think it is a heavily govt subsidised school holiday program of some sort. it would be hard to avoid learning to swim here i think (although lots of ear infections could do it i imagine). maybe that's why i automatically assume everyone can swim, because pretty much everyone i know can. except my mum that is.

gem (trisk), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 05:46 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...

FUCK YES!

Hurting 2, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 04:33 (eighteen years ago)

swimming is where it's at

Ronan, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 09:18 (eighteen years ago)

swimming AND running AND cycling

emsk, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 09:20 (eighteen years ago)

I don't swim well ;_;

Hurting 2, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 15:35 (eighteen years ago)

one month passes...

http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/

Figure out the mileage on your run - find your spot on the map, click "start recording" and then double click each point you want it to draw from.

I was a bit surprised that my current run is a little under 2 miles. Guess I need to step it up.

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 15:25 (eighteen years ago)

My route in my new neighborhood is about 2.6 miles (~25 minutes), I guess that's about what I expected.
