"I dunno, honey, it's like they HATE us for some reason."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 7 October 2004 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

"Putting a Bush-Cheney sticker on my car would be like adding a bulls-eye that says, 'Please vandalize my truck.'" .. ... or "Fanatical Zealot"

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 7 October 2004 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

...even in their own communities, Republicans are holding back...

Can anybody show me exactly where these "Republican communities" are? I think my cousin Andy might enjoy living there.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 7 October 2004 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, for fuck's sake.

Hahahaha

I was in Houston, TX. Two weeks ago. Believe me, they ain't holdin' back nothin' there.

Hatred for Republicans and the current administration is entirely justified and should be feverishly embraced. "ANGER IS AN ENERGY, ANGER IS AN ENERGY,..."

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 7 October 2004 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

One fellow said a couple of young guys pulled up next to his 64-year-old mother's car and signaled her to roll the window down. When she did, they screamed, "Bush is a F**king MORON!"

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 7 October 2004 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

How violent! Oh my! How is a Republican to defend one's self?! Everyone knows they are small and weak and not at all gun-owning.

Gold Teeth II (kenan), Thursday, 7 October 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

At least they're referring to "angry liberals." I'd rather been likened to Pol Pot than Terri Gross, Birkenstocks and organic apple butter. They feel the fear.

andy, Thursday, 7 October 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I like that people see this less as an issue of callow youth and more of an issue of liberal intolerance.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Thursday, 7 October 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Some folks feel a sense of relief each and every time they return to an undamaged car.

welcome to life outside a gated community!

Democrats are angry, but I find most Republicans to be positively vindictive.

Things You Have to Believe to be a Republican:
Saddam was a good guy when Reagan armed him,a bad guy
when Bush's
daddy made war on him, a good guy when Cheney did business
with him
and a bad guy when Bush needed a "we can't find Bin Laden"
diversion.

Trade with Cuba is wrong because the country is communist,
but trade with China and Vietnam is vital to a spirit of
international harmony.

A woman can't be trusted with decisions about her own body,
but multi-national corporations can make decisions affecting
all humanity! without regulation.

Jesus loves you, and shares your hatred of homosexuals
Hillary Clinton.

The best way to improve military morale
is to praise the troops in speeches while slashing veterans'
benefits and combat pay.

If condoms are kept out of schools, adolescents won't have sex.

Providing health care to all Iraqis is sound policy.
Providing health care to all Americans is socialism.

HMOs and insurance companies have the best interests of the
public at heart.

Global warming and tobacco's link to cancer are junk science,
but
creationism should be taught in schools.

A president lying about an extramarital affair is an impeachable
offense. A president lying to enlist support for a war in which
thousands die is solid defense policy.

Government should limit itself to the powers named in the
Constitution, which include banning gay marriages and
censoring the
Internet.

The public has a right to know about Hillary's cattle trades, but
George Bush's cocaine conviction is none of our business.

Being a drug addict is a moral failing and a crime, unless
you're a conservative radio host.
Then it's an illness, and you need our prayers for your recovery.

You support states' rights, which means Attorney General John
Ashcroft can tell states what local voter initiatives they have the
right to adopt.

What Bill Clinton did in the 1960s is of vital national
interest, but what Bush did in the '80s is irrelevant.

"Jesus loves you, and shares your hatred of homosexuals
Hillary Clinton."

SHE SAID THIS?!?!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 7 October 2004 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

no, there should've been an "&" there.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 7 October 2004 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

An interesting fact emerged: After the Admin claimed that Iraq harbored a terrorist training camp in Iraq, it turned out that the camp (Zarqowi's, the Mad Beheader) was in KURDISH held territory. We could have bombed it anytime, but didn't bother.

Beheading classes were uninterrupted.

andy, Thursday, 7 October 2004 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

New Orleans and environs are Bushfuckingtastic right now. I haven't keyed any cars yet but some cocksucker up the street (according to fundrace.org) gave 25 g's to the RNC. Every time I pass the Expedition parked in front I have to remind myself that keying the shit out of stupid ass SUVs perhaps runs counter to the democratic spirit.

adam (adam), Thursday, 7 October 2004 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Think of it as wasted funds.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 7 October 2004 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Not far from where I'm working these days, a law firm has a poster-sized pro-Bush sign on their lawn. Yesterday I was wondering how difficult it would be to replace it with a customized version. And how long an unauthorized version would be allowed to stay there.

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 7 October 2004 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

New Orleans and environs are Bushfuckingtastic right now

Seriously?? What about in the 6th ward, for ex.?

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 7 October 2004 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

The democratic spirit demands that you dump sugar in their gas tank, adam.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 7 October 2004 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

It's like college radio all over again.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 7 October 2004 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Several readers noted that Kerry bumper stickers seem to show up mostly on Mercedes, BMWs, and other "high-end Euro-steel," while Bush-Cheney cars are more modest American models. But at least part of the reason for this could be that Bush supporters are afraid to put stickers on new or expensive cars. Some families with two cars restrict the Bush-Cheney sticker to the beat-up old family van, keeping it off the better car.

Symplistic (shmuel), Thursday, 7 October 2004 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

At least no Bush supporters are getting, y'know, FIRED for putting bumper stickers on their cars. And Kurtz supports throwing waffles at the houses of Kerry supporters, demonstrating that intelectual consistency the National Review is legendary for.

Symplistic (shmuel), Thursday, 7 October 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope somebody throws waffles at my house.

Remy (x Jeremy), Thursday, 7 October 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, this article gave me so many great ideas! *running out of the room excitedly with keys and various other sharp objects and a huge grin*

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 7 October 2004 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

(maple syrup, too)

Remy (x Jeremy), Thursday, 7 October 2004 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Jeremy, they're going to have to angle up over the balcony, make sure they aim right.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 7 October 2004 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

This thread is making me hungry.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 7 October 2004 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

remember that dude who claimed that a democrat ripped his bush sign out of his daughter's hands and tore it in two? and it turned out that he claimed the same thing four years ago? i live in MADISON FUCKING WISCONSIN and we've had Kerry yard signs stolen and an Edwards bumpersticker torn off our car. The National Review is the Weekly World News for middle managers.

My mom was asking me me yesterday if there were even any Republicans in Madison, and I didn't have the heart to tell her about all the Bush/Cheney signs I've been seeing.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 7 October 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

"high-end Euro-steel"

TOMBOT, Thursday, 7 October 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

And Adam, I could start an initiative to get the brass bands of New Orleans to vote if you think that would help.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 7 October 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.fwweekly.com/issues/2004-10-06/metropolis.asp

A story in the FW alterna-weekly about Kerry signs being ripped up, not-very-threatening letters in the mail, etc.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 7 October 2004 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Republican restraint? When I was a freshman at a famously conservative southern university, my beloved 1981 Datsun 510 got fucked up because of my Dukakis/Bentsen sticker: back window cracked, antenna snapped off, paint on both front doors scratched off, dog shit smeared on door handle, tailpipe blocked with food, and said sticker partly torn off and otherwise obliterated with black marker.

Dickerson Pike (Dickerson Pike), Thursday, 7 October 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

not-very-threatening letters

Dickerson: the guy who did that was the author of this article I linked, yes?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 7 October 2004 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Afghanistan = The New Colombia. Drug lords are trying to blow up the capitol.

andy, Thursday, 7 October 2004 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I feel guilty stereotyping, but I feel a little shiver of elation every time I see a big pick-up truck with Nascar stickers and Kerry/Edwards stickers.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Thursday, 7 October 2004 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Seriously?? What about in the 6th ward, for ex.?

I was speaking more about rich areas of Uptown and the burbs, where people have more space for yard signs and stuff.

Let me just mention that a couple weeks ago we in Louisiana voted re: an amendment to the state constitution banning same-sex marriages (it was actually more pervasive than that, really about denying benefits to any kind of civil union). 80 PERCENT OF VOTERS VOTED FOR THE AMENDMENT. BY THAT I MEAN 80 PERCENT OF THE PEOPLE IN LOUISIANA ARE WORTHLESS BIGOTS THAT DESERVE NOTHING BUT PAIN AND TORMENT FOR ALL ETERNITY. What really shocked me was that the Orleans parish vote was still something like 2-1 bigot. Not as bad as north LA that was like 90% bigot but still.

In the course of writing all this and answering the phone and email and stuff I totally forgot what my point was. Probably something about swing states not really swinging very much at all.

adam (adam), Thursday, 7 October 2004 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

high-end Euro-steel

This is going on my resume.
