How's it compare to II and I? And talk about II and I too!

Tom, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If only Osama had a copy of Civ. Then he would understand what we were fighting for. (Er - to get to other planets and Win The Game).

Pete, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I bought CivIII this lunchtime. If I disappear for a few days you know where I am.

RickyT, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Apparently he has computer equipment in all his bunkers. It's difficult to do much useful with a fundamentalist government though so I doubt he approves.

This is always my great fear about Civ II incidentally - the pro- Western bias. In Civ I at least it was generally possible to crush the world beneath your communist heel.

Tom, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nonono, Bin Laden obviously an avid player of Civ II. Evidence: fundmentalism = best civ to crush rest of world in last civ standing type of victory in II.

RickyT, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Apparently he has computer equipment in all his bunkers": surely we are confusing ObL with Ernst Stavro Blofeld again? Or Dr Evil? Are they those old IBM ones with tape heads and blinking lights? When does the lake in the top of the volcano slide open? (If ObL put out a video doing a rap with Mini-mullah, I wd switch sides like a pathetic infantile whatever...)

mark s, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

of course we all know that obl coordinates all of his activities via a very old speak and spell.

jess, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Everybody knows that fundamentalism is the best Civ govt but only after you've researched everything and are on to the lame 'future technology' rubbish, then switch to the fundies and hey presto! Everything's cheap, everyone's happy, and you get new fundalmentalist military units.

DG, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And it's been removed in Civ III. CHIZ.

RickyT, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But surely then you don't get your cities growing by 1 per turn on 'we love the president' day, which is the easiest way to get monster points. (Unless you do get that with fundamentalism, I wouldnt know).

Tom, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Are you chaps ruining this for me when I eventually play this or are you ENHANCING MY POTENTIAL FUTURE ENJOYMENT?

Sarah, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bah. Who wants population growth when you can have FILTHY LUCRE and UNIVERSAL JOY when the INFIDELS are SMITED?

RickyT, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I do not care for points, I only care for GLORY! Or blood. Alpha Centauri was great, when the proles got restive you could 'nerve staple' them so they wouldn't play up. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAA!

DG, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pop'n growth could crash Civ I if you took it too far. I want my empire to be numberless even if you can't win with it.

Tom, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

R civ II still having lame pollution penalties. I R wanting to cause complete nuclear destruction hemhem!

I R conqueror!, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hmmm... last Friday I actually ended up getting Aliens Vs Predator II rather than Civ3, simply because I didn't want to forget to turn up at The Spitz on Saturday. But I'm going to have to get it.

How does it compare to Civ II? Is it much of an advancement? I've heard trading is easier, which was always my big problem with all the Civ games in that I couldn't be bothered to establish trade routes...

Oh, and AVP2 is ace by the way. Very scary, but stutters even on my NASA computer... :(

Paul Strange, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Has no-one mentioned CM01/02?

Mark C, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

so far, i've found it to be kinda evil. I keep trying to use old stratgies, and finding myself getting the snot beaten out of me by everyone joining up alliances at once. the other civs seem unnaturally great at pinpointing the resources i need and occupying them at times of war, makinmg units i need for war out of reach. Wonders of the World are more difficult to build. The inabilty to irrigate without freshwater is a lot nastier than it first seemed. How roads connecting distant cities promotes trade and secures resources is most cool though. I like its evil, and might find it as addicting as Civ 2.

badger, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Civ I was fun, except when you played the higher levels. Instead of the computer opponents getting smarter, the battle odds just slid way into their favor. So suddenly your battleships couldn't take out the comp's settlers. That shit pissed me off.

bnw, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I bought Civ III today along with AVP2 but haven't played it yet as I am trying to get AVP2 to work. Don't you worry, I shall post my ill- thought out opinions up here later.

DG, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mark, please don't mention champ man, I am too addicted and have to resist here for a while for fear of being busted.

chris, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But Chris, I must tell you of my triumph in taking Rushden and Diamonds to 11th in the 2nd division! With Gianfranco Zola playing inside right!

Mark C, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've loaded it back up now, england manager after Keegan sacked for not making it to World cup, top of the league with Liverpool. Look out for Ronald Gomez, superb striker, got me 25 goals and 20 assists in season 2001/2. Also Bart Goor is an excellent winger.

I really shouldn't be doing this......

chris, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

two months pass...
It is much more difficult! Help! (Also this is where your e-mails have gone FT people sorry)

Tom, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ah, the truth is revealed! You pathetic game addict! Or something.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

two years pass...
so we are still playing this right?

i got Conquests for my birthday from Tom because he is a BAD BAD MAN (not really). VIKINGS! a wonder that puts a TEMPLE IN EVERY CITY on the continent!! ME NOT LEAVING THE HOUSE FOR THE NEXT MONTH!!!!

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 17 May 2004 09:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh now you've gone and done it. I'll have to go home and resurrect the little Babylon/England border skirmish I had going on a couple of weeks ago. I've got Gunpowder & Leonardo's Workshop but no Saltpeter - CURSES!!!

robster (robster), Monday, 17 May 2004 09:25 (twenty-two years ago)

ooh, there's nothing worse is there...

my greeks are doing OK, although the local romans might be about to become troublesome.

i think the problem with playing on warlord (level 2) is that i don't have a manual as it came free with the computer, thus i don't know the precise details for each civ...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 17 May 2004 09:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I have that dude, printed nicely in a binder.

chris (chris), Monday, 17 May 2004 09:39 (twenty-two years ago)

thinking about it i have a feeling it's possibly on the disc in PDF or summat, but i haven't really looked very hard...

i started reading Tom's copy on new year's eve, but realised it was a little anti-social...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 17 May 2004 09:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I might start a new game instead. I fancy playing as India cos they get ELEPHANTS.

robster (robster), Monday, 17 May 2004 09:43 (twenty-two years ago)

that's exactly where uit is steve - all 300 odd pages of it!!

chris (chris), Monday, 17 May 2004 09:49 (twenty-two years ago)

the elephants are, in fact, a bit rub, although they look ace as they gallumph across the map. strangely you don't need ivory as a resource to make them...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 17 May 2004 09:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Yr scientists would need to discover re-animation first.

Actually that's a great idea - then you could have THE UNDEAD as a military unit and they'd cost nowt.

robster (robster), Monday, 17 May 2004 10:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I had that Civ 2 Test Of Time thingy and it had all sorts of k-bonkers supernatural military units. Pity that it was in the most important aspect less good than the original Civ2 ie my being able to see the bloody MAP!

Ricardo (RickyT), Monday, 17 May 2004 10:11 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
haha revive! i just got this last night - haha, 4 years later.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 13:15 (twenty years ago)

kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

haha just in time.. i'd probably finish playing by then

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

Required reading.

Can we have a thread for the Sid Meier Civilization games?

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

I'm Hi, Jared Fogle (ex machina), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)
