Funnily enough, Kochiyama soshun ended up making both lists this week. Nice coincidence.

Like all Spielberg films, Amistad is intermitently gripping and technically superb. And like almost all Spielberg films it throws away all the good will it's fostered with an ending of supreme mawkishness.

Eternity and a Day - extremely slow and eloborate shots, as par for the course with Angelopoulos. It's somewhat intriguing, but there are times when you just want to fall asleep. Luckily, the great moments tend to cancel that out. The whole film is haunted with a ghostly air which transcends description. Three and a half stars out of five, only because the perfection is lined with the insufferably plodding. Angelopoulos wouldn't care, though.
