It obviously wasn't us (yet again) that fucked this one up....let's pull a Quebec here, from Buffalo to Montauk (West Chester and Long Island Republicans can move to New Hampshire if they wish)....The Peoples Republic of Ramonia...who's with me?

Space Is the Place (Space Is the Place), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 15:24 (twenty years ago)

I live in Chicago, can we join you?

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 15:24 (twenty years ago)

ya done well, Illinois! (55-44 Kerry)so you're welcome....in fact, all of the west coast and northeast (besides New Hampshire) can come too

Space Is the Place (Space Is the Place), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 15:27 (twenty years ago)

I say we fold the country together, unite the coasts and send the heartland down to Hell where it belongs.

Loose Translation: Sexy Dancer (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 15:31 (twenty years ago)

isnt it worth noting that a number of the cities, in the red states, were blue?

Space Is the Place (Space Is the Place), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 15:32 (twenty years ago)

can minnesota come? or at least the twin cities?

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 15:33 (twenty years ago)

Al Jaffee is laughing his accordion ass off somewhere.

Loose Translation: Sexy Dancer (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 15:35 (twenty years ago)

Minnesota can bring Wisconsin and Michigan as well...not so fast, Indiana!

Space Is the Place (Space Is the Place), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 15:36 (twenty years ago)

How about if you just divide the country into North and South again, but give plenty of notice so that those ineffectual people who voted for Kerry in the South can run for the border.

Burnt Brat (burntbrat), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 15:37 (twenty years ago)

Tarmac the praries, make them urban.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 15:38 (twenty years ago)

Pity about the food supply, then.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 15:42 (twenty years ago)

WE'LL JUST HAVE TO LIVE ON SOYMILK AND VITAMINWATER, THEN.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 15:43 (twenty years ago)

I was hoping maybe Canada would annex Michigan.

Leon in Exile (Ex Leon), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 15:44 (twenty years ago)

But what if they only took the UP? (The soon to be spinoff series to The OC.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 15:44 (twenty years ago)

I'm in NJ and would like to join the secession, please.

mcd (mcd), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 15:45 (twenty years ago)

Canada will not be taking over Michigan. We had Detriot and we gave it back almost 200 years ago. Though personally i'd love to see upstate New York, northern Maine and Washington back.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 15:47 (twenty years ago)

Vermont is with you--I've talked to about a dozen people today who want out of this jesus-freak nation.

This was not a vote of "united" states--there were two nations voting for one leader yesterday, each with a completely different view of what being an American means. I really hope the Northeast starts taking initiatives to ensure stronger states' rights, because the "moral majority" is only growing, and this election has proved well that noisy young leftist just don't show up at the polls.

How long do you have to live in a state to claim residency? The huge lopsided support for Kerry in the Northeast means that we could sacrifice 10's of thousands of votes in many states and redistribute them to one key swing state, like Florida.

Who's up for a year in Orlando in 2008? Disneyworld, warm weather & Hillary...

jay blanchard (jay blanchard), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 15:56 (twenty years ago)

How long do you have to live in a state to claim residency?

In many cases, you just need a mailing address in the state where you want to vote.

I already live in an island nation run by Carly Simon, which does make me feel a little bit seperate from the Bush-lovin' doofuses that abound in the united states, but i would be lying if i said that maria and i weren't working out the hypotheticals surrounding the valid resident alien status that she enjoys in the Netherlands. Hellooooooooo, Amsterdam!!! (if and when things get to bushy for comfort. You know, Mandatory Patriot Indoctrination Camps, Pat Robertson as new education czar, stuff like that.)

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 16:00 (twenty years ago)

I AM SO WITH YOU.

*USA OUT OF NEW YORK CITY!*

The Peoples Republic of Ramonia

Johnny Ramone's already had his revenge.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 16:02 (twenty years ago)

They can take this republic when they pry it from my cold, dead fingers.

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 16:03 (twenty years ago)

god, i just had a thought: another four fucking years of doublespeak-named bills and acts. isn't there an international court for crimes against language somewhere?

maura (maura), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 16:03 (twenty years ago)

America is great, you dumbasses. The South is great, the Midwest is great. There are just a lot of stupid fucking idiots out there.

Kerry just conceeded.

jay blanchard (jay blanchard), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 16:09 (twenty years ago)

What if we gave you some candy?

Only if you fix up Detroit. Get rid of the broken cars and move Eminem out of state.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 16:10 (twenty years ago)

I know that smaller states have larger urban populations, but looking at the red/blue maps is creepy, to see that for the most part blue states are at the margins with red filling in the rest.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 16:11 (twenty years ago)

Jay, where are you getting this? Yahoo just said that Kerry was asking for Bush to concede.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 16:13 (twenty years ago)

It's on CNN

Jonathan Z. (Joanthan Z.), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 16:14 (twenty years ago)

I just want to remind everyone about my contest.

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 22:10 (twenty years ago)

The thing is we just want a new government. It doesn't mean that we can't visit the rest of the U.S.

Carey (Carey), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 22:15 (twenty years ago)

I would just like to say to the rest of the United States -- and this seems like the perfect thread for it -- that you are woefully, abjectly and laughably inferior to New York City, and we'd like absolutely nothing to do with you. Yes, we have a hotbed of idiots here too, but once we're rid of the likes of you, I'm sure they'll decamp to your vile shores and join you. Good luck...you'll need it..you wretched, blind, idiotic toads.*

* this has been typed after worryingly several beers on an empty stomach, it sould be noted.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 4 November 2004 00:58 (twenty years ago)

i wonder if new york city still exists in four years

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 4 November 2004 01:02 (twenty years ago)

I say our new country joins the EU. That way, we can travel back and forth freely.

This hilarious, btw...

http://www.harpers.org/

Especially how the Republic of Minerva got annexed by Tonga.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 4 November 2004 01:08 (twenty years ago)

I wish we could just zarch the Midwest entirely and join the Northeast directly to the West. The culture wars would be to die for.

Orbit (Orbit), Thursday, 4 November 2004 01:10 (twenty years ago)

OMG THEN ALL WE COULD DO IS SAY 'OMG UR SO FASHION' TO ONE ANOTHER AND IT'D BE LIKE UTOPIA EXCEPT MY MOM WOULD PROBABLY COME OVER A LOT MORE OFTEN THAT WAY!

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Thursday, 4 November 2004 01:15 (twenty years ago)

all due respect, and I know this might sound churlish, but orbit will you please either go zarch yourself or say something so that I know that you are kidding about this elite liberal bullshittery

Orbit (Orbit), Thursday, 4 November 2004 01:23 (twenty years ago)

sovereignists in america

Sébastien Chikara (Sébastien Chikara), Thursday, 4 November 2004 01:33 (twenty years ago)

Hmm, I'm not at all sure about this. Our import/export ratios would be fucked for sure.

mouse (mouse), Thursday, 4 November 2004 01:57 (twenty years ago)

yeah haha indeed. sorry for harshing on poor lil ol' orbit when in fact everyone else deserves it too, but I'm on edge out here a little bit. on the one hand, orbs, now I know you were full of "irony" instead of bullshit; on the other hand, that's exactly what a LOT of people out here suspect is going on all the time anyway, and it's losing us a lot of ground.

but people just don't know the FACTS! hey, man, us upper-midwesterners have been liberals when california was still voting bepublican (dukakis '88 when y'all wuz a red state what what)!

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 4 November 2004 02:01 (twenty years ago)

I'm most supportive but, uh, you know that Quebec still hasn't separated after years of struggle, right?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 4 November 2004 03:43 (twenty years ago)

Struggle = being a total pain in the ass.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 4 November 2004 03:44 (twenty years ago)

"bush got more states, but kerry got ALL of the QUALITY states."

Elitistmuthafuckinbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 4 November 2004 04:02 (twenty years ago)

but wr2 NY -- i dunno if i'd go so far as to say that anything north of dutchess county or west of rockland county is "quality."

and whatever you NYCers do ... THIS TIME, LET STATEN ISLAND SECEDE YOU'LL BOTH BE HAPPIER THAT WAY THEY'RE REPUBLICAN DOGS ANYWAY!!! AND NO, WE DON'T WANT 'EM HERE IN NEW JERSEY EITHER!!!!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 4 November 2004 04:05 (twenty years ago)

quality-state america: NYC, Chicago, LA, Philly, Boston, DC, Baltimore, San Francisco, San Diego, Detroit, Minneapolis.

crap-state america: Houston, Dallas, Charlotte, Jacksonville.

we win.

we'll trade 'em Staten Island for Atlanta, though.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 4 November 2004 04:10 (twenty years ago)

detroit is pretty shitty, actually
thanks mostly to the big three.

so is LA

thanks to

again, the big three.

fucking cars.

trigonalmayhem (trigonalmayhem), Thursday, 4 November 2004 04:12 (twenty years ago)

what flamebait--LA is classic!

Orbit (Orbit), Thursday, 4 November 2004 04:13 (twenty years ago)

psh. LA is everything I hate.
I moved to the east coast to get away from that place.

trigonalmayhem (trigonalmayhem), Thursday, 4 November 2004 04:15 (twenty years ago)

(such a dud)

trigonalmayhem (trigonalmayhem), Thursday, 4 November 2004 04:15 (twenty years ago)

that's your problem.

Orbit (Orbit), Thursday, 4 November 2004 04:16 (twenty years ago)

I'm most supportive but, uh, you know that Quebec still hasn't separated after years of struggle, right?

this summer and on I heard strong separatist strategies, that impressed me.ex: at the last referendum it was a fault to concede defeat without making it a brillant victory. that's right. The young generation cares about separatism but with alterglobalization and the environment, it's a popular topic now and it will happen very soon.

Sébastien Chikara (Sébastien Chikara), Thursday, 4 November 2004 04:29 (twenty years ago)

Here's the big problem, guys... talk about suceeding or leaving all you want, but the rest of the world is perfectly happy to let us stew in our own juices.

http://www.harpers.org/ElectingToLeave.html

Canada does not want you. Europe does not want you. Hell, in France, you now have to take a test to live there. The only way you're leaving this country is if you plan do significantly downgrade your quality of life. Consider Mexico.

Kenan (kenan), Thursday, 4 November 2004 04:33 (twenty years ago)

*cries*

Orbit (Orbit), Thursday, 4 November 2004 04:39 (twenty years ago)

That's ok, those who stick around are going to experience a sharp decline in their quality of life anyway!

Cheap oil and the american way of life are ending!

trigonalmayhem (trigonalmayhem), Thursday, 4 November 2004 04:41 (twenty years ago)

I was thinking of moving to southeast Asia to teach English, but who wants to teach the language of an empire in decline? I can't win.

Kenan (kenan), Thursday, 4 November 2004 04:58 (twenty years ago)

I notice they didn't mention the UK or Ireland in that Electing to leave piece. The UK will take you without delay if you're a teacher, nurse or doctor. Of course the UK is only a little step up we do have Tony Blair and no hope of unseating him. Also Highly skilled migrant worker programme, helps to have a graduate degree and be into something like stem cell research.

If you have an idea for a novelty trouser press

servents

And of course we are not proud, we'll let anyone in with a million quid or even just a personal net worth of over 2 million

Ed (dali), Thursday, 4 November 2004 08:10 (twenty years ago)

I have none of that, and even my actual skills are somewhat dubious. Looks like I'm not moving.

Kenan (kenan), Thursday, 4 November 2004 08:24 (twenty years ago)

Oh just pop over anyway, we'll hide you in the shed.

Can Massachussetts also join the New York Republic? I mean, Kerry wasa from there. USA out of the NorthEast!

How about the NorthEastern States of Aerica,(NESA) in alliance with the Pacific States of America (PSA)and the Free Republic of Illinois.

Cacaman Flores, Thursday, 4 November 2004 19:26 (twenty years ago)

And DC is ours! Kerry got 90% of the vote there.

Cacaman Flores, Thursday, 4 November 2004 19:28 (twenty years ago)

Oh man, I love love love the idea of Sealand. It's years since I last heard about it. I don't think it'd be easy to emigrate there though.
