Once girlie men, Democrats may also be "losers" in governor's mind
Associated Press

SACRAMENTO - Two days after the worst election defeat in decades for the national Democratic Party, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger referred to leaders of the state's majority party as "losers" in response to a reporter's question about tax increases.

Even before he concluded his remarks, however, Schwarzenegger attempted to recast his jeer to be aimed only at the idea of raising taxes - not at Democrats themselves. The governor's spokeswoman Margita Thompson also offered the same clarification only a few minutes after Schwarzenegger's press conference to announce the appointment of a new finance director ended.

But the same governor who degraded Democrats during the budget fight last summer as "girlie men" did not seem to misunderstand a reporter who asked whether Schwarzenegger would listen to proposals from Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata, D-Oakland, or other Democratic leaders to increase taxes to solve the state's spending problems.

"Why would I listen to losers?" the governor asked. "Let's be honest."

Schwarzenegger went on to say that Democrats had "lost every single ballot in the Bay Area" and that "the big spenders wanted to go with increased taxes, many different taxes and fees and all kinds of things and lost all of that," he said. "And in Los Angeles it lost. People don't want to be taxed."

Adding: "Why would we go and follow a losing formula? It doesn't make any sense."

Thompson said the governor was talking about ballot measures in the Bay Area and in Los Angeles that lost at the polls Tuesday.

A spokesman for Perata declined to comment on the remark.

The good news is that his appointment for budget director, Tom Campbell, is an old time moderate Republican.

Does he legislate to an out-of-tune player-piano?

The state bond measures are big taxes right there, at some point, ergo I shrug at his attempt to think otherwise. So frankly, not surprised by this, not pleased either. (I actually think this is all clear frustration over the fact that the only thing he can do with a strongly Democratic-controlled state congress is vent, since he can't run roughshod -- no 'mandate' here! It's been interesting reading watching the hard financial right complain in various circles that Arnold has essentially sold out to the man.)

"Why would I listen to losers?" the governor asked. "Let's be honest."

Meanwhile, Mrs. Shwartzenegger has proclaimed that she will withhold the Skeletor poontang INDEFINITELY.

WHO'S THE LOSER NOW CONAN!?!

???

adam... (nordicskilla), Friday, 5 November 2004 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Rhetorical question, incidentally: Arnold-as-politician has now borrowed both “girlie men” and “pump you up” as routine jokes. This is the first case I can think of of any celebrity, in politics or not, delivering the catchphrases of SNL parodies of himself alongside his actual memorable film lines. What gives? How must Nealon and Carvey feel?

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 5 November 2004 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Carvey these days must feel good that somebody remembers his name.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 November 2004 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Didnt the democrats GAIN seats in the state legislature?

According to this page:

The results were exactly the same -- no change anywhere. Which seems kinda odd, frankly.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 November 2004 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

the bay area thing was about San Francisco taxe initiatives that were put on the ballot and lost. Information on layoffs, service cuts here. Yay, way to go Arnold! that's sure something to crow about! Fucking Austrian dumbass.

eight years pass...

Women, equally always see men as a project. They take our personalities away in their loving way, and want to make us their puppies. Men, wake up, why we are so girlie? My friend, who is a soldier says, the only true men that left are metal music fans and “neckless heads”.
