What's up with Momus' eyepatch?

Maybe I'm too new to ILX and missed all the explanation/hype, but I genuinely am curious. I mean, who wears an eyepatch unless they're planning on some raping and pillaging that day?

sugarpants (sugarpants), Thursday, 18 November 2004 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

it's a gimmick, like stephen hawking's robovoice.

they both think they're so...cool.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 18 November 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe there is a prob with his EYE?

More threads about Momus plz.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 18 November 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 18 November 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

NIPPER

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 18 November 2004 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

You meant it the first way.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 18 November 2004 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

(Read the link in the link above)
I have to say, I had assumed it was a bad eye thing not fashion. I've worn contacts for a long time. Shall double wash hands from now on...

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 18 November 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it pure affectation then, the eyepatch? He comes across as a pretty affected guy (which I'm sure he'd be willing to admit to).

Wooden (Wooden), Thursday, 18 November 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

NO HE ACTUALLY HAS AN EYE PROBLEM

It is pure infection.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 18 November 2004 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Ever since I read that I've been slightly paranoid about wearing contacts, I wear my faux-emo glasses most of the time now.

Leon the Fratboy (Ex Leon), Thursday, 18 November 2004 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Amoeba in the eye! Cool!

I mean, not for Momus. But still. Awesome!

sugarpants (sugarpants), Thursday, 18 November 2004 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Momus wears his eyepatch symbolically, as a subtle piece of performance art. It symbolizes the bland and blank surface of society, beneath which lurk the hideous deformities of sightlessness and despair. Ned pays $5 a month him to wear it.

Aimless (Aimless), Thursday, 18 November 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd pay Net $5 a month to wear one.

lemin (lemin), Thursday, 18 November 2004 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

eek. Ned, of course

lemin (lemin), Thursday, 18 November 2004 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

$5000 and we'll talk.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 18 November 2004 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

aw c'mon ned, where's the eyepatch love?

lemin (lemin), Thursday, 18 November 2004 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I have plenty of love! I would like plenty of cash to go with. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 18 November 2004 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I was going to get contacts. Now I think I'll spring for the laser surgery.

asdf troll, Thursday, 18 November 2004 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

How much does laser surgery cost these days, anyway? *wonders if the insurance here covers it*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 18 November 2004 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's $2000 per eye?

asdf troll, Thursday, 18 November 2004 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Good grief. Never mind, then.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 18 November 2004 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

But free refills!

asdf troll, Thursday, 18 November 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Biggest regret of my life: a couple of months before the amoebas attacked, I tried out daily disposables and decided they weren't comfortable enough, and a little too expensive. If I'd switched to those, all this would never have happened.

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 18 November 2004 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Given the information you had at the time, you made the best deicision you could have made. You were (pardon the expression) blindsided by fate. It was not in your hands.

Aimless (Aimless), Thursday, 18 November 2004 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I will never switch to contacts.

Momus, once again, my heart goes out to you.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 18 November 2004 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll wear an eyepatch for free, and with no amoebas!

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 18 November 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

woah, i wear contacts and rarely ever take them out. when i started using them at age 13, i was fastidious about taking them out every night and washing them. now, 12 years later, i rarely bother taking them out. free and clear of amoebas or any kind of infection, so far.

ela, Thursday, 18 November 2004 23:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I am hesitant to wear contacts even though glasses can be kind of a pain in the ass. I have a slight phobia of touching my eyeball that is really not helped by the idea of putting in and taking out contacts daily.

martin m. (mushrush), Thursday, 18 November 2004 23:39 (twenty-one years ago)

i wonder if momus is ruining his vision this way...

Does John Coltrane Dream of a Merry-go-round? (ex machina), Thursday, 18 November 2004 23:39 (twenty-one years ago)

note: my hygiene is on the money in every other respect.

also: how harmful is it really to not clean them often?

ela, Thursday, 18 November 2004 23:42 (twenty-one years ago)

poor momus : (

trigonalmayhem (trigonalmayhem), Friday, 19 November 2004 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

No kidding.
I like Momus. He is on my list of "people I wouldn't mind getting drunk with".

Orbit (Orbit), Friday, 19 November 2004 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

haha I remember when I started this thread, it was because he posted a photo of himself nekkid and everybody else was going on and on and on about his ding dong and I posted "WAIT MOMUS HAS TWO EYES?"

TOMBOT, Friday, 19 November 2004 00:47 (twenty-one years ago)

It can be very harmful not to take them out and clean them often.
It's often not the lens itself which damages the eye but shit that sticks to it like for example crystallized minerals in dried mucus

if you have ever had a booger that felt sharp when you tried to pick it then you should understand exactly why it is important to clean your contacts, microscopes people, you're wearing them because you CAN'T SEE GOOD, why would you think you can look at it on your finger and tell whether or not it's safe?

I of course have slept in mine hundreds and hundreds of times to the point where a doctor told me that my blood vessels were swelling up in my retina for lack of oxygen. But I always keep them clean! (eg throw them out after two weeks (or three))

TOMBOT, Friday, 19 November 2004 00:53 (twenty-one years ago)

btw we're all going to go blind from staring at computers all day so frankly why bother even pretending you care about your vision at this point

TOMBOT, Friday, 19 November 2004 00:54 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, that sucks.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 19 November 2004 00:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I feel really bad about all this at the moment. I was talking to my husband about Momus the other day 'cause someone had posted a pic or something, and I was describing him. I quite clearly remember saying, "...and he wears this eyepatch, I think it's some kind of silly affectation or something" and my husband says, "so theres nothing wrong with his eye?", and I say "nah, I think he just think it looks cool".

oops.

god made dirt and dirt bust ass (papa november), Friday, 19 November 2004 00:59 (twenty-one years ago)

fucking LOL

Andrew (enneff), Friday, 19 November 2004 01:02 (twenty-one years ago)

But I always keep them clean! (eg throw them out after two weeks (or three))

hahaha up until like a month ago this was after wearing them for the two or three weeks, straight! Then you blame my bloody candles for your eye problems! You're going to go blind.

Andrew (enneff), Friday, 19 November 2004 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I have defective eyes, yet I refuse to wear glasses in that they would make me look like a fool, and refuse to get contacts because of Momus' story.

Andrew (enneff), Friday, 19 November 2004 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

yep, lol

RJG (RJG), Friday, 19 November 2004 01:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Andrew, you will most likely end up marrying a millionaire with your strategy, so do not fret!

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Friday, 19 November 2004 01:12 (twenty-one years ago)

It's like I'm between messages between Glasgow and Melbourne and I'm being buffeted here in OC. (xpost)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 19 November 2004 01:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Leaving lenses in your eyes can, as Andrew says, make the oxygen-starved veins gradually grow up to the surface to 'breathe', sometimes crossing the optic nerve and diminishing your vision, even blinding you. The thing about lenses is never store them. Throw them away and you should be fine. If you have to store, disinfect both the lenses and the container, and replace containers frequently.

There, my message to the world.

Momus (Momus), Friday, 19 November 2004 01:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I have no idea what you're talking about, Ned.

Momus, you should write a song about it.

Andrew (enneff), Friday, 19 November 2004 01:16 (twenty-one years ago)

(Oh, actually it was TOMBOT who said the oxygen thing.)

Momus (Momus), Friday, 19 November 2004 01:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Momus you should drink with me next time you are in town.

Orbit (Orbit), Friday, 19 November 2004 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

isn't there some laser treatment you can do now that can correct your vision so you don't have to wear contact lenses anyway?

ken c (ken c), Friday, 19 November 2004 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Depends what's wrong with your eyes, Ken. In my case, there's nothing that can be done. (on the upside, they'll never get any worse)

Andrew (enneff), Friday, 19 November 2004 01:19 (twenty-one years ago)

yes.

Orbit (Orbit), Friday, 19 November 2004 01:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to wear long-wear lenses all the time but now mostly wear glasses because of the convenience (and I think they look OK on me too). However, in the last couple of years I've started using the daily disposable ones from time to time, which are just fine. No storing or cleaning, and you can get really cheap comfortable ones. I mean, come on people - those of you who are scared off using lenses from Momus' story are a bit silly. His case was extreme and very rare. Plus, I'm sure I read somewhere on ILX that his problem was initially caused by changing lenses on a ferry using icky water (?).

I'm still a bit scared of the laser thing though - a friend of mine has had loads of complications. I'd rather give the technology a few more years to sort itself out...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 19 November 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm giving a friend a few more years to sort herself out (see how she goes). And a lottery win for me.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 19 November 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I wonder if it freaks Momus out to have entire threads devoted to his eye. I guess if it were me, I would think it was kinda cool.

Oh, and it's a bit late, but:

it's a gimmick, like stephen hawking's robovoice.
they both think they're so... cool.

OMG LOL

sugarpants (sugarpants), Friday, 19 November 2004 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I wore contact lenses for a few years, then switched back to glasses for the sheer convenience of them. But I have been known to use this story to confirm my being right. ;-)
