Due to the 17 day memory hole, I think it's necessary to start the next thread ASAP, so as to prevent chaos. Luckily, I kept a written record of the nominations as it was ongoing, although I think my last entry was a day or two ago.

DA RULES
1. In any case, you all have a grand total of FIVE nominations total. So if you already used two up, then you have three left. If you haven't used any, go for all five.
2. All entries must be received by 11:59 PM GMT, December 31, 2004.
3. All nominations/nominators from the previous thread are locked in and can not be changed. This is to prevent, to a degree, some of the fiascos from last time.
4. Despite rule 3, you can still change your nominations on what gets nominated on this thread.

Look, I went to say "has worked with James Cameron" but remembering the Cameron love on these boards I went to delete and put in McTiernan, forgetting to get rid of the James part. Got it? It's a fucking simple mistake.

Wow, I get 3 more?

-- Dr Morbius (wjwe...), December 21st, 2004 3:18 PM.

Uh-oh.

Plus, I have five nominations still, right? I mean, should I choose to use them?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, you do still have five nominations available to you, should you wish to use them.

As for sincerity and so forth - I don't see how you can determine this realistically, consistently, and accurately. Therefore it's a moot point in my mind. If you have suggestions, nonetheless, I'd ask that you discuss it in this ancillary thread and leave this one to the actual nominations process. Thanks!

Girolamo Savonarola, Tuesday, 21 December 2004 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

oh! I have 5 noms! I'm sorry I didn't read too thoroughly. So my choices are all, in order:

1) Flirting
2) Ratcatcher
2) Crying Game
3) Days of Being Wild (yeah, yeah, yeah)

two more -- open to suggestions? got some ideas, but I'm wondering if there's anything big still overlooked.

Boys Don't Cry (Peirce, 1999)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 05:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw Boys Don't Cry in Dublin, OH. Fond memories. There's something about seeing regional independent films in small towns. Or maybe it was just all the brick and the ice cream parlors.

youn, Wednesday, 22 December 2004 06:00 (twenty-one years ago)

That's the hometown of Dave Thomas of Wendy's fame, IIRC.

Can I replace To Die For with Liberty Heights (Levinson, 1999)? Thanks.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

So how many slots are going to be on the ballots? 1-10? 1-20? 1-30?

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

What do you recommend, Gear? Being as you have some experience with these polls. I was gonna go for your format (30, right?), but I'm curious to know what you think.

Girolamo Savonarola, Wednesday, 22 December 2004 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

30 is pretty solid, I think. More votes, more numbers, it fills out the top 100 much better.

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Three more? Ah, ok.

The Fisher King (1991, Gilliam) (surprised no one has yet nominated this)

Twelfth Night (1996, Nunn) (mainly for a magnificent performance by Ben Kingsley as the clown Feste... but generally a suitably wistful, autumnal version of this play)

A Room for Romeo Brass (1999, Meadows) (it would appear this hasn't been seen by enough people... questionable though the ending tactic is, it's a remarkably gripping piece of slightly surreal British naturalism)

Tom May (Tom May), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

REMOVE BRAVEHEART FROM MINE AND ADD:

TRUE ROMANCE(SCOTT, 1993)

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Thursday, 23 December 2004 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

My final three nominations:

L.A. Confidential
What's Love Got To Do With It
Beloved

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 23 December 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

U-Turn

Grosse Point Blank

and i'll hang on a bit longer for my last one

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Thursday, 23 December 2004 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Shallow Grave (Boyle,1994)
To Die For (Van Zandt, 1995)

Let me think about #5

Doobie Keebler (Charles McCain), Thursday, 23 December 2004 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll put in one for now...

Velvet Goldmine (Haynes, 1997)

Girolamo Savonarola, Friday, 24 December 2004 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I made the case before for The Vanishing being a '90s movie, since it was released in the U.S. in 1990. Did that get rejected, or just accidentally left off?

Pete Scholtes, Tuesday, 28 December 2004 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

seeing as I can't even get formatting right...

Pete Scholtes, Tuesday, 28 December 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

< i > etc < / i >

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

The Fisher King (1991, according to Amazon, but I might be wrong)
Truly, Madly, Deeply (1992)

5th nomination later.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 18:16 (twenty-one years ago)

zaxxon, Blue was already nominated above by gabbneb.

Jeez, I suck. Alright I know nobody has nominated:

Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie (Mallon, 1996)

and that's my final.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Good Lord, another three?

OK then...

Pleasantville
Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey
Drop Dead Gorgeous

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Should I drop Tank Girl or Vincent & Theo to nominate Tombstone? Will anyone but me have V&T in their top 15-20?

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

True Romance is my fifth and final nom

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 23:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry for the absence...lost in South Florida on mandatory family visit business...

Pete, sorry but you'll just have to wait for the 80's poll to get in the original version of The Vanishing.

I'm a little disappointed that we haven't had more replies to this thread so far, but I'm uncertain whether to chalk it up to holiday season or just ennui after it being dragged out so long. *shurg*

(and *shrug*)

I'll be dropping a new list sometime tomorrow. Maybe I'll finally be able to have it 100% verified 90's films, too. Maybe.

Girolamo Savonarola, Wednesday, 29 December 2004 03:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, here's my final three votes:

American Job
Schindler's List
Metal and Melancholy

Pete Scholtes, Wednesday, 29 December 2004 23:56 (twenty-one years ago)

These have all cleared a date check (save one). Also, I noticed a lot of double nominations recently. Too many to go into at the moment, but please check your noms to make certain your name is by them. If not, you goofed, but on the bright side, you still have a nomination left!

Girolamo Savonarola, Thursday, 30 December 2004 04:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Add these 5 from me:

Bitter Moon (Roman Polanski, 92)
The Last Bolshevik (Chris Marker, 92)
Showgirls (Paul Verhoeven, 95)
Crash (David Cronenberg, 96)
L'Humanité (Bruno Dumont, 99)

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 30 December 2004 06:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, no. Strike all five of those except for Bitter Moon and put these in instead.

Death Becomes Her (Robert Zemeckis, 92)
Red to Kill (Billy Tang Hin Shing, 94)
Titanic (James Cameron, 97)
Uncle Sam (William Lustig, 97)

I was going to put Carlito's Way (Brian De Palma, 93), but I expect someone to swoop at the last second and rescue it. Same with Crash.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 30 December 2004 06:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Close-Up (Abbas Kiarostami,1990)
Paris Is Burning (Jennie Livingston, 1990)
The Butcher Boy (Neil Jordan, 1997)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 30 December 2004 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

death becomes her, eh?

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 30 December 2004 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

My Last One:

Clerks (Smith 1994)

Doobie Keebler (Charles McCain), Thursday, 30 December 2004 17:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I also nominated Bringing Out the Dead up there somewhere

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 30 December 2004 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Right you are, sir. My gaffe. It will be included on the next (and likely final) list.

Girolamo Savonarola, Thursday, 30 December 2004 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Two more for me, stolen straight from Girolamo's list on the suggestions thread:
Army of Darkness (Raimi)
Three Kings (Russell)

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 30 December 2004 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Remains of the Day (James Ivory, 1993)
Bullets Over Broadway (Woody Allen, 1994)
Deconstructing Harry (Woody Allen, 1997)

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Thursday, 30 December 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

if Chris V already picked True Romance then i've got another pick i believe.

make it Contact (1997, Robert Zemeckis)

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Thursday, 30 December 2004 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

was about to change that for 'Pollock' but that's 2000 - oh well

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Thursday, 30 December 2004 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Titanic?

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 30 December 2004 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I am reluctant but tempted to replace the Merchant-Ivory film with The Age of Innocence, but maybe I'll just plant the seed and see what happens.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Thursday, 30 December 2004 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Bullets Over Broadway (Woody Allen, 1994)
Deconstructing Harry (Woody Allen, 1997

neither of these are as good as Manhattan Murder Mystery or Husbands and Wives, neither of which was that great in the first place.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 30 December 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

death becomes her, eh?
-- s1ocki (slytus...), December 30th, 2004 10:12 AM.

As far as satires of the Hollywood mentality from within the system go, I'd expect Death Becomes Her needs more help, reputation-wise, these days than Showgirls.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 30 December 2004 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Red to Kill (Billy Tang Hin Shing, 94)
Titanic (James Cameron, 97)

I cannot believe you mentioned these two in the same breath.

Mil (Mil), Thursday, 30 December 2004 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think Manhattan Murder Mystery is very good at all. Husbands and Wives is great, but he'd done it so many times before. For the 90's Woody, I think picking the funniest one and the angriest one is pretty representative.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Thursday, 30 December 2004 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Eric, you're not trying to assume the gadfly role, now, are you? ;)

Girolamo Savonarola, Thursday, 30 December 2004 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

satires of the Hollywood mentality from within the system

what an interesting subject for a movie

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 30 December 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Absolutely not, gsav. Though I'll admit that I willfully pushed myself towards picking some of the more extreme examples of films that fall within my taste (or lack thereof) brackets, and probably the fact that I immediately switched out my original picks reveals that urge, I love all five of those fucking films.

The most gadflyish thing about my nominations is that I know I'll be the only one voting for them and that suits me just fine.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 31 December 2004 04:51 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG no one has nominated Bound.

I'd like to switch out Bullets Over Broadway, plz. Although I do love to watch Cusack yell "I'M A WHORE" out the window.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Friday, 31 December 2004 05:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd like to change my SPEED nomination to a nomination for LONE STAR. because no-one else nominated it.

a banana (alanbanana), Friday, 31 December 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Cabin Boy (Adam Resnick, 1994)
Careful (Guy Maddin, 1992)
Hands on a Hardbody (S.R. Bindler, 1997)
Irma Vep (Olivier Assayas, 1996)
Silverlake Life: The View from Here (Peter Friedman & Tom Joslin, 1993)

brian patrick (brian patrick), Friday, 31 December 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

banana OTM. Good call.
