are you fine with doing absolutely nothing on new years eve?

i am. well im staying in with lots of family at home so its not entirely nothing but i refuse to spend ten quid per drink at some overpriced, overated club or bar in london!

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Friday, 31 December 2004 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I am. I'd ideally like to be having a wonderful dinner with half a dozen or so of my wittiest, closest chums, but I didn't organise one, no-one invited me to one and in any case Sgs is down with some rotten flu thing and I'll be serving her lemsips and mopping her brow all evening.

But I wouldn't be anywhere else cos I wuv her :)

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 31 December 2004 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Awwwwww. Now I must go shoot up some insulin 'cause that was so sweet. (Tell her that Baby Jesus told me to tell you that He orders her to get better pronto.)

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 31 December 2004 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh poor SGS....say "hope you feel better soon" from me.

I'm not fine with doing nothing New Year's Eve, which is why I shall be seeing the New Year in here.

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 31 December 2004 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm leaning towards doing that this year, New Years Eve is all about reflecting over the past year and feeling depressed anyways, so it's not really a good "party" day for me.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 31 December 2004 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

My Plan:

Movie Recommendations for New Years Eve

kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 31 December 2004 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

you're supposed to pretend that it's not about feeling depressed, though. hm. yeah, it'll probably be slow, and quiet in that alone-on-a-holiday way.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Friday, 31 December 2004 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm totally cool with doing nothing on New Year's Eve, it's a terrible terrible day, just a crap way to end Christmas. It's one of the first things I'll get rid of when I'm in charge. We'll do more for other days instead.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 31 December 2004 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i believe god is trying to send me a message through the mirror not to go out.

Hari Ashurst (Toaster), Friday, 31 December 2004 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I quite like spending New Years' Eve at home, but it leaves me not looking forward to being asked what I did on NYE. People never seem to believe me when I say "oh, it was great, I drank port and tried to teach myself Danish."

cis (cis), Friday, 31 December 2004 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

The universe just told me to stay home tonight. I suppose we could set up a rolling New Year's ILX thread/chatroom/virtual party.

j.lu (j.lu), Friday, 31 December 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Traditionally, we stay home and eat crab and drink bubbles which is great 'cause this is amateur night, but this year we're going out to a New Year's bash done by a record label, one of whose employees, a dear friend of ours, is celebrating her birthday.

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 31 December 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I've been invited to a giant loft show downtown. My friend Lee is one of the DJs and a few bands are playing but I just don't want to go. It's been raining all day and will probably rain all night. I feel more like staying in and watching Casablanca.

Orbit (Orbit), Friday, 31 December 2004 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a TV show about weather forecasting on at 9pm!

jel -- (jel), Friday, 31 December 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I should tune in. I don't normally mind sharing the freeways of LA with gun toting drunken SUV drivers, but I don't want to share it in the rain.

Orbit (Orbit), Friday, 31 December 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Why? It'll mess up their aim.

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 31 December 2004 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

It's New Years Day here, and I stayed in last night. Read a book and went to bed real early, feel great right now.

Friends were all going off to different, really awful events, and I didn't want to fork out extortionist NYE prices to go to the couple of decent things on. Much better (and cheaper!) things to do tonite!

Mil (Mil), Friday, 31 December 2004 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

We drank champagne and talked in the garden. A few friends dropped by.After they all left we got dressed up and danced on the lawn.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Friday, 31 December 2004 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

That sounds nice, music mole.

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 31 December 2004 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm learning to play Sympathy for the Devil on the ukulele and making melba toast. Shortly I will go to bed and read PG.Wodehouse and send my best to drunken txters. No complaints here.

holojames (holojames), Friday, 31 December 2004 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm learning to play Sympathy for the Devil on the ukulele

Unfortunately, I just imagined you singing "Please allow me to indroduce myself..." in Tiny Tim's voice.

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 31 December 2004 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Delightful. A friend of mine used to do Tiny Tim's friend's lawn. Tiny Tim himself would drop by occasionally and always addressed her as 'Miss Miriam'.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Friday, 31 December 2004 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I am watching an ITV comedy drama featuring John Gordon Sinclair and Alan Davies. It's soothing.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 31 December 2004 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

My 4 yr old daughter and I are chopping fresh herbs for a special mix we are naming after her.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Friday, 31 December 2004 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sitting down here, just biding time until the inevitable gathering to watch Jools Holland, this year featuring a grand total of absolutely nothing of interest. Cullum and Clapton - together at last.

I have got writing to be doing though. The singles article is paddle-steaming along at a pace that's rather more leisurely than it really should be. 22 down, 69 to go...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 31 December 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

at first no. it's kind of lonesome. but then i realized every wrong, hurtful guy i've been with i met or got together with on new years. so now i'm kinda relieved.

lolita corpus (lolitacorpus), Friday, 31 December 2004 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm sleepy. i think i'm still feeling the effects of cross-country air travel. FYI: DUD: the Las Vegas airport at midnite. Ewwwww.

We are in for the nite. Would it be too sad of me to crack open the Cassavetes dvd boxed-set i got for christmas?

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 1 January 2005 00:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll be ok. Maybe get drunk and watch TV, post on this thread...

Steely Zan (AaronHz), Saturday, 1 January 2005 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Scott: Watch the Cassavetes, why not?
x-post

Steely Zan (AaronHz), Saturday, 1 January 2005 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

i was thinking it might be a little moody for the whole promise of a new year vibe. but what the hell. i'm itching to see the groovy criterion transfers. I've been thinking about A Woman Under The Influence a lot lately.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 1 January 2005 00:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I spent the night just me and my boi, I watched some TV, then we sat out on the balcony with loads of cushions and candles lit up, and saw in the new year listening to everyone else's parties, it was lovely. I like quiet ones.

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 1 January 2005 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

fuck a promise of a new year vibe
x-post

Steely Zan (AaronHz), Saturday, 1 January 2005 00:23 (twenty-one years ago)

im not okay with it. I'm pouty because everything there is to do tonight costs at least $30 at the door, and that makes me angry.

jill schoelen is the queen of my dreams! (Homosexual II), Saturday, 1 January 2005 00:25 (twenty-one years ago)

i am not, though i should be.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 1 January 2005 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I'll watch some DVDs.

Though I'm not really fine with that.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Saturday, 1 January 2005 00:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Not only am I fine with the thought of doing absolutely nothing on New Year's Eve, but to make this possible I plan to reach a state of rigid catatonia several hours in advance of the turning of the year.

Aimless (Aimless), Saturday, 1 January 2005 00:45 (twenty-one years ago)

i am going out, but i don't expect it to be super-fun, and i'd probably have plenty of fun just watching some movies at home. but as noted, somehow i'm not able to do that.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 1 January 2005 00:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Happy New Year everyilxor!
I stayed in. I thought I would have a problem with it at first especially as I'm on my own but my best friend telephoned at midnight which cheered me up.

I'd miss my own wedding just to watch The Wicker Man anyway (if only for Britt Ecklands fantastic 'How Do' rendition)

Ste (Fuzzy), Saturday, 1 January 2005 01:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm trying to fill out an online form for temp librarian positions and I can't find the stipend levels from a former job and it is driving me crazy!

youn, Saturday, 1 January 2005 01:30 (twenty-one years ago)

When the clock struck twelve, I looked up briefly and then went back to Football Manager.

I just picked up a new keeper, so I've got that going for me, which is nice.

blahhhhhh, Saturday, 1 January 2005 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

looks like I might play Scrabble with Mom.

Steely Zan (AaronHz), Saturday, 1 January 2005 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm crashing out in a motel room in Roswell, NM after driving through rain and snow for the past couple of days.

UFO count is zero so far.

Gator Magoon (Chris Barrus), Saturday, 1 January 2005 02:06 (twenty-one years ago)

it seems as though I'll be having a handful of friends over for music and drinking. Most of my friends are still out of town, so it'll be relatively sparse, I think.

One of my friends has begged out of the gathering to go see one of her friends play in a Grateful Dead cover band. ("It's his last night in the band!")

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Saturday, 1 January 2005 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, for awhile I wasn't fine with it, but I'm just not in the mood to go to some big party, either. So actually I am fine with it.

Bimble..., Saturday, 1 January 2005 02:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, fine. I was almost killed on New Year's eve, years ago. But now I just want to stay home. My parents are having a huge party -- lots of drunk Christians talking about God knows what (no pun intended). Still might go out. Don't really want to go to a busy street and hear drunken people scream. Oh well...we'll see.

Star Cauliflower (Star Cauliflower), Saturday, 1 January 2005 03:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I was working.

cºzen (Cozen), Saturday, 1 January 2005 03:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I am at home, drinking rum & coke and listening to the DFA comp while Sarah and her friend Sarah play Scrabble. We already watched 50 First Dates (lame) and later we will watch Dodgeball. A couple of other people might drop by, but I doubt it. It's pretty fun.

n/a (Nick A.), Saturday, 1 January 2005 03:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I went for a nice hike this afternoon, had a nice turkey sangwich, put the 10 month old to bed, and am getting sloshed on wine and making fun of the Rand Institute. What could be more middle-aged fabulous??? Fleetwood Mac is on TV, if that would go away I might be slightly better. Oh, my orange cat just popped up on my lap, we're good again.

Hunter (Hunter), Saturday, 1 January 2005 03:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I was fine with it, but then my boyfriend's ex-girlfriend stopped by and I was sitting alone in a dimly lit room listening to minor threat, reading a book about cod and drinking wine straight from the bottle. Now I might be creeped out by myself.

Joan of Oates, Saturday, 1 January 2005 03:51 (twenty-one years ago)

That's like a perfect storm, especially the cod part.

Hunter (Hunter), Saturday, 1 January 2005 03:56 (twenty-one years ago)

New Year's is always terrible. Three of the last five I've had some kind of stomach bug (and one of those I had to work - no health code violations there), on another of them I drank too much far too quickly and don't even remember midnight. This year I just wrote it off in advance.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Saturday, 1 January 2005 04:06 (twenty-one years ago)

for the millenium New Year's I was at my parents' home in Illinois. I drank too much champgne before midnight and managed to pass out around 11:45 and wake up at 12:15.

This evening was anticlimactic in the end. A few friends stopped by and we drank wine and debated music in my dining room whilst my friend Jim's girlfriend watched TV in the living room. Then we were briefly entertained by a fender bender outside on L0s Feliz Blvd. To make a point about music around 1am I played some Quasi. I forget why. I'm a little drink. drunk i mean. i'm too lazy to backspace right noew

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Saturday, 1 January 2005 10:16 (twenty-one years ago)

There were a load of horrid tracksuit wearing kids in the street last night, then 4 police cars and 2 police vans turned up to disperse them at around half 10!! Blimey! One of my neighbours windows has been boarded up, I think a party got gate-crashed or just out of control. I watched the shopping channel for a while, it was cheering to see that the world goes on as a normal for them, always something to sell.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 1 January 2005 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I spent the early evening walking around the East Village and getting sauced, then we went home on the train and I went into the bathroom. When I came out, shoes in hand I heard "3...2...1...". Then I went over to hug my friend I'm staying with and accidentally sat down ON HER BABY.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Saturday, 1 January 2005 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i had a good time at a party last night but the journey home was so horrendous that i think i'd rather just stay in next time

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Saturday, 1 January 2005 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

happy new year people!

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Saturday, 1 January 2005 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I went to dinner with a few friends, then we went to some bar and chatted for a while (brilliant conversation about billionaire goths arranging to learn how to float), then moved over to the club next door which was extremely overcrowded and overflowing with hipsters and I was the designated driver so I was destined for UNFUN anyway. My sister got sloshed and begged us to stay until closing, but after we got our baby sized bottles of champagne, we left.

Not the worst NYE ever.

jill schoelen is the queen of my dreams! (Homosexual II), Saturday, 1 January 2005 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Happy new years guys - i act too cool for school but don't believe it: my love for yall gets deeper with every year - the sketchier I get, the more helpful you get - the better I get, the happier you get - don't mug yourselves and we all gon B ah ite in 2005. Please make smooth moves and laugh often.

Melissa, respond to my mails awreddy, girrfreng!

LeCoq (LeCoq), Saturday, 1 January 2005 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

This is exactly what we did. My mum and I stayed in and watched The Wicker Man, ate a wonderful curry (which I made) and drank Babycham. (My mum's idea, not mine, she had no idea why I kept giggling when she bought it.)

My mate kept texting me trying to get me to go out with them, but I didn't fancy Soho. In the end, he ended up not being able to get home because the bridges were all closed off by the police! I felt vindicated for my lamer boring choice.

The Grain of Sand in Lambeth That Satan Cannot Find (kate), Sunday, 2 January 2005 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I ended up at a friend's house in Silverlake drinking scotch a soda with a small group--it was a relatively quiet New Years.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 3 January 2005 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Ditto on the Silverlake.

Carl Winslow is WHAT!?!? (deangulberry), Monday, 3 January 2005 01:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Carl Winslow is PEOPLE!

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 3 January 2005 01:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i went to my friend's house to get ready to go to this party, by the time we finished the pre-party bottle of wine the time was 23:50, and so we opened the other wine and talked about plans for next year.

The most civilised new year for a while i feel all growed up.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 3 January 2005 03:40 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG I spent New Years at home, didn't go to the pirates v ninjas party, got all el ess deed and shit, got it on with a pagan WOOT WOOT.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 3 January 2005 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

aw that's super

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Monday, 3 January 2005 13:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Me and Gravel Puzzleworth went raving and had a wicked time and spent about £20 each altogether! Drinks for £1? Rock'n'roll!

Gravel - did you take any photos perchance? Please can you send?

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 3 January 2005 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I drank flaming Sambuccas and accidentally set fire to someone's tie. It was ace.

C J (C J), Monday, 3 January 2005 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

mine was lame-o. instead of following through with plans to go to a friend's party, the boy and i ordered a pizza, watched a gillion episodes of seinfeld, and argued about what to name our mingled dna mass currently preparing to erupt from my person. it was quite relaxing honestly. better than going out and braving the roads no doubt filled with drunken drivers.
