in the context, I though writing Search/Destroy could be misinterpreted.

Anyway, there are so many guys running - Marwan Barghouti, Mahmoud Abbas, Mustafa Barghouti, Ahmed Qureia, Uncle Tom Barghouti et al. Which one is your favourite?

in other news, the Israeli Government helps out with the election as only it can: http://www.guardian.co.uk/israel/Story/0,2763,1380831,00.html

don't know enough about the candidates, but i agree that sharon's actions are disgraceful.

standard liberal response?

I think the standard liberal response is to favour Mustafa Barghouti. Mahmoud Abbas is the US-Israel alliance's preferred candidate, and therefore suspect, while Marwan Barghouti is not actually running. There are a couple of other no-hopers in the ring as well (amusingly, being prevented from campaigning by the Israelis: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/4132663.stm ), but essentially the likelihood is that Abbas will romp home (thanks for Fatah's organisational power), with Barghouti coming a distant but respectable second.

They say the real thing to watch in the election is how well Hamas does, particularly outside the Gaza Strip. It has not fielded a presidential candidate, but is running for the parliament. I am amazed they are able to find candidates, as anyone identifying themselves publicly as a prominent figure within Hamas is surely setting themselves up for extermination.

I like Abbas, he seems incredibly sane. What's good about Mustafa? And if Abbas wins, isn't he also the preferred candiate of the Palestinians? Am I missing something here?

I thought Barghouti dropped out? oh yeah, you mentioned that.

I don't know too much about Mustafa Barghouti, but people like him because he comes from outside the Fatah-PA politicial establishment.

Yasser Arafat's death paves the way for Jon Williams to become the next palestinian leader

(2nd link was meant to be this...)

bnw (bnw), Monday, 3 January 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

Abbas, the front-runner in Jan. 9 Palestinian presidential elections, has been courting militants, appearing with gunmen at campaign stops in the West Bank and Gaza Strip (news - web sites) in recent days.

Whatever, bnw. This is just the Palestinian version of Kerry duck-hunting.
