has anyone bought this?
is it good? can it play gameboy games?
or should i save my money?

splooge (thesplooge), Monday, 10 January 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

The good games aren't out for it yet, really; by summer Mario Kart, WarioWare Touched, Metroid, and Zelda should be released, and at that point it'll be a total 100% classic.

The current crop is a little weak (Mario DS, Madden 2004, and Feel the Magic are all good; the others are somewhat crap), but Nintendo obviously rushed the console to market before its flagship titles were finished so they could have the 2004 Christmas season all to themselves.

It can play Gameboy Advance games (though not, AFAIK, the older Gameboy Color/Gameboy Classic games). The screen is just astonishingly beautiful to look at, and the WiFi gaming works flawlessly. There are also heated rumors of a Katamari Damacy DS being developed, for which I might be convinced to kill a man.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Monday, 10 January 2005 15:13 (twenty years ago)

jimd to thread.i played with his before christmas, and it was so cool! we ended up being more entertained with the wifi function than the games themselves-- writing messages and drawing pictures and sending them across the room. i got him a couple games when i was in the states, and if they'd had any consoles in stock, i probably would have bought myself one!

colette (a2lette), Monday, 10 January 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

WarioWare Touched

?? gross?

ken c (ken c), Monday, 10 January 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

Not at all!

I for one want one JUST for Zookeeper.

Starry (hello chickens), Monday, 10 January 2005 15:19 (twenty years ago)

I'm skeptical. Have any left-handers played it yet?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 10 January 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

I like my Nintendo DS a lot. I've never had a portable system before, ever, so this is like Wo constantly for me. I can't wait to take it on the Amtrak during the school year. It has the power to make life less annoying. Battery life is absurd, the flip screen/automatic sleep mode is brilliantly handy, and though I play it without sound on when I've turned it up it's LOUD. Good lord. Can I use it as an alarm clock?

I haven't seen any DS games in particular that look terrific yet, but I'm not worried. The graphics do look terrific and the ability to play whatever GBA games I want on the thing is really the dealbreaker for the DS/PSP comparison.

Rumors abound as to what the thing might be ultimately capable of, with the 802.11 support and etc. etc. but for now I'm happy with Minish Cap upcoming and Final Fantasy 1+2 /FFTA to keep me busy.

TOMBOT, Monday, 10 January 2005 15:31 (twenty years ago)

The only DS game I've played, the Metroid Hunters demo, has control options for RH/LH players and a couple others that are apparently non-partial. Personally, I tend to hate FPS, so I didn't care.

TOMBOT, Monday, 10 January 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

I'm a lefty, works fine for me, at least on the games I've actually played (Mario, Feel The Magic, the Metroid demo).

I had grave reservations about the touchscreen, but it actually works brilliantly.

retort pouch (retort pouch), Monday, 10 January 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

I don't like the little plastic tip thing, on the strap. I prefer the stylus. What is the ILX consensus?

Also, this thing seems HEAVY to me, it really weighs down a coat pocket. I can't imagine having to haul around the PSP.

TOMBOT, Monday, 10 January 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

Once an English language version of Zookeeper comes out I have to buy one of these.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 10 January 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, the thumb strap is wack, it obscures too much of the screen for my liking.

I suppose the unit is kind of heavy. It's not so bad if you're using the D-pad, but if you're using the stylus it's a real strain on the wrist that's left holding the machine/mashing the buttons. Also the likelihood of dropping it seems quite high. Hasn't happened yet, touch wood.

retort pouch (retort pouch), Monday, 10 January 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to buy one. Though I'm crap at computer games. I keep falling down a hole in Minish Cap :(

jel -- (jel), Monday, 10 January 2005 18:04 (twenty years ago)

DO NOT FALL DOWN ONE HOLE

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 10 January 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

I just can't get enough power from my wind jar, pull back the mushroom and it just catapult's me into the abyss. I've given up.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 10 January 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

Try moving a pot, and going back as far as possible. It's not the wind jar's fault - it's YOU!

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Monday, 10 January 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

I'm a lefty too and it works just fine for me. My 8yo cousin got one for Christmas, needless to say I hogged it all day. This thing is totally worth getting and I'm not even a huge Nintendo fan, I was holding my breath for the PSP but I'm thinking about snagging one of these. The graphics are gorgeous and the touch screen function is surprisingly problem-free.

kevin says relax (daddy warbuxx), Monday, 10 January 2005 21:57 (twenty years ago)

I just can't get enough power from my wind jar, pull back the mushroom and it just catapult's me into the abyss.

Yeah, I have that problem all the time.

Adamdrome Crankypants (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 10 January 2005 22:15 (twenty years ago)

What does the bastard thing actually look like?

Searching for 'nintendo DS' under goodgle images comes up with... lots of stuff. But not very helpful.

Sasha (sgh), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 00:25 (twenty years ago)

two months pass...
I got one!

But I have to wait 4 hours for the battery to charge! Shoulda done it at work.

I have Pokemon Dash.

I wanted Wario Ware but it wasn't in stock :(

jel -- (jel), Friday, 11 March 2005 17:15 (twenty years ago)

dammit

why do i have to be broke now :(

well, i have enough for resident evil 4 next friday ;)

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Friday, 11 March 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

Warioware is a big fat disappointment. I clocked the whole thing (all games, all secrets, everything) in about 3 hours of play. 2 of which were very dull.

I've just got stuck into Polarium though, and it's very promising. Lovely hard puzzles, the sort that make me think "cor Jim, you're a genius!" when I finally solve them. Challenge mode is too hard for me, yet, but hopefully that'll change.

Of the other DS games I've got - Tiger woods is interesting but fatally flawed (stupid difficulty curve). Mr Driller is no different to the GBA version really. Mario is...mario, only with a dodgier interface. So where it used to be a joy to play, now it's just slightly mundane. The minigames are great though. Feel The Magic/Project Rub is...too wacky for its own good really. And Zoo Keeper is GREAT! Way better than the flash version of the same game thanks to it's improved combo system. It's the first game I got with the system, and the one I keep going back to.

(and yeah Hari, RE4 is bloody great, you won't need a DS for a while)

Maybe Nintendo will port this:

Sasha (sgh), Friday, 18 March 2005 03:56 (twenty years ago)

On the touch screen, you could rebuild Michael's face/sanity/career/jungle love.

BARMS, Friday, 18 March 2005 09:49 (twenty years ago)

I think I need to get a better game for my DS. When is Final Fantasy out??

jel -- (jel), Friday, 18 March 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

get! get! dokatu used panties looks good

scg, Friday, 18 March 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
yoshi isn't too hard but very compelling.

it is a reasonably big unit, weight and size wise, enough that I won't carry it around in a coat or trouser pocket. unlike the SP.

the screens are lovely as is the front-end OS. the touch is v. responsive.

one minor gripe: when I change my system settings there is no way to get out of the menu back into the front end. similarly when I start up a game there is no way to exit in a similar manner but it's really just a minor problem considering it takes next to no time to power up.

I'm looking forward to the kirby, zelda, and mario kart games. hopefully there'll be a new mario too.

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 15 May 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

I love the left-hand side-bar on that modgods site.

I wish the UK was hooked up enough for organised wireless throwdowns.

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 15 May 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

also, another plus: it's finally given me a moderately expensive reason to re-pick up and and beat advance wars...

then I get to buy advance wars 2 advance wars DS!

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 15 May 2005 20:12 (twenty years ago)

another thing: when the DS online play is finally uh 'activated' will I be able to play online over my WEP protected connection or over my university connection which you have to connect to via a proxy?

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 15 May 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

classic, because it is nintendo.

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 16 May 2005 05:07 (twenty years ago)

according to the modders and hackers the DS doesn't use regular internet headers to communicate, so it would have to be some kind of connection where their custom gamespy-partnered network would be in play already.

But it could be that the games coming out for it will have special protocol stacks built in so they can link up through proxies, we shall see I suppose.

(re Advance Wars: Backwards compatibility is the best feature you can build in to anything, isn't it?!?)

TOMBOT, Monday, 16 May 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 5 September 2005 14:22 (nineteen years ago)

I wonder what FIFA 06 will be like on the DS? Is there a Golden Sun style game for it yet??

jel -- (jel), Monday, 5 September 2005 15:35 (nineteen years ago)

I said this on the other thread and I say it here: METEOS IS AWESOME

adam (adam), Monday, 5 September 2005 16:10 (nineteen years ago)

what are the best games for this thing? can i get any vaguely adult or brutal games for this? cos i did love mario kart but then found it was too fucking easy and im not sure how many other ways i can play this thing now. i blame the adverts - its all for kiddies, girlies, or people that dont usually play games. *sticks tongue out*

titchyschneiderMk2, Thursday, 3 July 2008 19:54 (sixteen years ago)

get Advance Wars (the first one). I wish I could find my DS. This is a real good strategy game that takes forever to beat.

CaptainLorax, Thursday, 3 July 2008 20:01 (sixteen years ago)

seven years pass...

I can't get into playing games on my phone. But I found my old ds lite while looking for needle nose pliers and I can't stop playing Dawn of Sorrow. I have a bhuj now.

been looking at used chrono trigger carts on amazon. dragon quest and advance wars as well. feel like I missed plenty of good ones. seems like a good thing to have when getting an oil change or something. never played minish cap. this will be fun.
