Did they come out of a printing press???!!!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 00:16 (twenty years ago)

Snopes already called bullshit on this one I'm afraid.

papa november (papa november), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 00:16 (twenty years ago)

Aw bums. Are these all just standard deepsea exploration finds pictures instead then? I was thinking it a bit odd that deepsea fish, if washed ashore this way, werent all squashed (as they shouldbe coming out of such pressure surely?)

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 00:18 (twenty years ago)

Yup, just your average deep sea scary-ass fish, not connected to the Tsunami.

i think we've already had our scary-ass fish thread. do a search for "missionary" and "stilleto", or something like that. we eventually locked it, for the good of all mankind.

These fish are just as God made them

Jimmy Mod always makes friends with women before bedding them down (ModJ), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 03:40 (twenty years ago)

This species is sexually dimorphic (glossary). Females reach a total length of 20cm, but males only grow to 1.6cm. Males have well developed sense organs that are used to find a female. When a male finds a female, he bites her and doesn't let go. His skin fuses with the female and he becomes a parasite on her.

Friends don't let friends become fused parasites. But of course, if your friend is that ugly, you should let him hang on to whatever he can catch.

Hunter (Hunter), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 04:17 (twenty years ago)

I know some males like that.

papa november (papa november), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 04:19 (twenty years ago)

By the way, one of the alternate names for the oarfish is King of the Herrings! It grows to over 20 feet in length!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

Goddamn! These are excellent! I'm using them for CD-R covers!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

There is something about sea creatures that scares me more than any other animals on earth.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

Jeanne so OTM it hurts.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

Wow oarfish are cool. What that artist's rendering above omits is the intense red color of the dorsal fin and pectorals.

This is a cool story. Poor fishy.

This one broke in half when a bystander tried to pick it up while it was swimming in the shallows.

Hunter (Hunter), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
Why did the pics come from http://www.art-ificial.com/indie/scary-fish/ ? Is it because they're artificial?

Critic, Saturday, 5 March 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

No, they're real, as explained on Snopes:

"Although they are genuine images of some rather strange deep-sea creatures, these photographs have nothing to do with the Indian Ocean tsunami. They date from mid-2003 and were taken as part of the NORFANZ voyage, a joint Australian-New Zealand research expedition conducted in May-June 2003 to explore deep sea habitats and biodiversity in the Tasman Sea. These photographs can be viewed on Australia's National Oceans Office web site. "

brianiac (briania), Saturday, 5 March 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

Thankfully, living 2,000 miles from any ocean pretty well isolates me from these monsters. But I'm still dealing with the trauma of a childhood fishing trip when I pulled one of these ugly mothers out of the Mississippi:

brianiac (briania), Saturday, 5 March 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

You'd have had a far more traumatic experience had it pulled you in, which, looking at it, seems a good possibility.
