This is the Thread Where I Say Pt 27: And So We're Told This is the Golden Age

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 10 February 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

out of fear comes respect

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Thursday, 10 February 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)

Out of respect comes understanding.

Huk-L, Thursday, 10 February 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

Bitches better have mah money.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 10 February 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

All I want iz bitchez, big booty bitchez.

Fish fingers all in a line (kenan), Thursday, 10 February 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

Jeez, I haven't checked in a bit. How's everyone?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 February 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

which reminds me of the ever-delightful musical stylings of ll cool j:

Tina got a big ole butt
I know I told you I'd be true
But Tina got a big ole butt
So I'm leavin' you...

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 10 February 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

Hi dere! I have a class discussion board for my Silent Cinema seminar, and I'm starting arguments all over the place with annoying, snarky, crit-studies students.

Remy (x Jeremy), Thursday, 10 February 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

Yay! (Just sent you a message about FAP tonight.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 February 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

That's awesome, Remy. That would be a great comedy scene.

Huk-L, Thursday, 10 February 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

Ooh, I'll post my last reponse here. I had fun being a dick in it:

Hi, wow, unsolicited hostility.

Let me respond to your post in a sort-of general way before I tackle a few points individually. To the personal charges of negative attitude and elitism I have little to offer in my defense except for this: I find it useless in any discourse to challenge the speaker’s intention rather than responding to their stated point. If you find my style elite or negative I’m largely unconcerned, but I think that may be the kind of sentiment better kept unexpressed. Electronic media are (obviously) terrible for conveying tone, subtext, and intention and seem to have a way of exacerbating skirmishes into bulge-battles. And if you /do/ already find me a snobby pessimist, I’m sorry, but I’m more concerned with expressing my frustration at this discussion ( which others mentioned on Tuesday’s class) than the tone of my response.

Now, I think I want to go through your suggestions in-line, so I’ll apologize preemptorily for cutting-up your text.

If you do not listen to the people that have already spoken on the discussion board (i.e., read the other posts) and incorporate what they have said in your response, and just speak, that is not a discussion. It is a monolog. [sic]

I totally agree, XXXXXX, and that is why my last three posts have been direct reponses to the questions / points others have raised. I went back to check them, too. I was hoping, in all cases, that the original posters would reply to me, but I’m batting 0 for 3. In each case I’ve quoted the speaker’s original text - doing to a lesser extent what I’m doing here - and responded after ample thought.

Just because you may have to read a paragraph or more, rather than a sentence or two that constitutes a “post” on other discussion boards, and based on the fact that you can not tack on a simple “yeah, I saw that movie too” and call it a “response” as they may do on other boards, does not mean this forum can not work for discussion.

Your snarky quotes around post aside, I think your assessment of all internet movie boards as thoughtless, rapid-fire, and vacuous forums for single-line response is totally baseless. I’ve never once typed-out as facile a response as ‘yeah, I saw that movie too’ and doubt that anybody would in any of the other forums where I work. Beyond the pervasive and uncritical fan culture which has swept-up the popular conception of internet discussion, there are tremendously academic, thoughtful, and articulate discussions which I’d advise you to research before your blanket dismissal.

Second, a post needs to consist of actual substance and have a point of view or stance on some subject. It can not just be random thoughts loosely strung together. These types of post say nothing that another person can agree or disagree with. It leaves nothing for anyone to build on.

As a courtesy to you, XXXX, I read all of your previous posts before responding to this one. I credit you with taking strong and arguable positions every time, and with stating upfront your thesis statement. Nevertheless, I couldn’t help noticing that you despite your insistance that posters refer to previous statements, you never seem to do this yourself. Given the changing role of the board in our class, this is excusable thus far, but it does very little with furthering the discussion. ‘Actual substance’ too, is a problematic charge on a board in which many of the contributions are reconstituted, cut-and-dried, or what-have-you. Posts, for instance, stating that Griffith was a master inventor who contributed much to film lexicon but are culturally idiotic and offensive are themselves lacking in ‘actual substance’ because the points are so utterly obvious.

Finally, I suggest you check your negative attitude, preconceived notions as to what constitutes a discussion board, elitist ideas of how to run a film discussion board, at the door and actually spend as much time concentrating on the technical, social, economic, political and historical impact that silent film has had on cinema history,

Each of my posts previous to the one on this Week 5 discussion has done, I hope, just this. As a matter of fact, this is /exclusively/ what I’ve concerned myself with.

and possibly how these pictures have paved the way for you to have the opportunity to study and create films presently. If you would actually concern yourself with content of the course, rather than the form it may have,

I don’t find these as seperable discussions as you seem to, Dean, and think that the content of a course is largely guided by its form. Wanting to engage in a discussion of pedegogy doesn’t suggest I’m unconcerned with the content at all, but (to my eyes) indicates an attempt to actively engage with it.

you may be surprised at what an organic and inartificial experience this class may create for you and your classmates.

I hope so, XXXX.

Remy (x Jeremy), Thursday, 10 February 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

err, pretend I XXXed out the name at the end.

Remy (x Jeremy), Thursday, 10 February 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

In other news, Hi everyone! I find my pimp hand is strong, but my pimp spirit is weak.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 10 February 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

Mommy, I'm scared.

Orbit (Orbit), Thursday, 10 February 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

I'm the type of guy that picks her up from work early
Takes her to breakfast, lunch, dinner, and breakfast
You're the type of guy eatin a tv dinner

MY drawers. YOUR hamper.

Fish fingers all in a line (kenan), Thursday, 10 February 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

Off topic, but I've just had some shocking news. My friend who died recently--his son has become a ward of the court and he's in a foster home. What a mess.

Orbit (Orbit), Thursday, 10 February 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

oh shit. That's terrible. You mean there's no one at all willing to take him in?

Fish fingers all in a line (kenan), Thursday, 10 February 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

yup. if I could i would but i can't afford it.

Orbit (Orbit), Thursday, 10 February 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

Oh how horrible - Orbit, I'm so sorry to hear it.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 10 February 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

(PS: Kenan, bring it on)

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 10 February 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

I wish *I* could do it, Orbit, but (a) that would be weird for the kid, and (b) I can't afford it, either. My heart is breaking over this poor little guy.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 10 February 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

How old is the kid?

Remy (x Jeremy), Thursday, 10 February 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

Luna in sydney: tinydemons@hotmale.com! Colin is keen too. We can talk about kids over 10 or so drinks!

Pimps up, hoes down.

I am the worst influence on you love...

However, if you are going to cite the brilliant work of documentary filmmaker Brent Owens, this is an important distinction:

Worst or best?

OMG. Poor _________'s son!! :( :( :( He seemed so talented and bright and loving tooooo. Awwww. Why on Earth did they take him into foster care?

Also: People, please tell me if this is a good idea or not.

And Mark, responding to your query re: Wes Wehmiller -- yes, I did hear the news about his passing. It was very sad.

Surreal Addiction (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 11 February 2005 03:51 (twenty years ago)

I dunno about that blog-collab, or whatever it's called. Would it obligate you to post regularly, or just bounce traffic yer way?

---

It's 8.53pm, CST, and in 2 hours I have to leave for a film shoot. I'll be gaffing for a stupid advertisement from 11:30pm until 8:30am. After that I have 30 minutes to sleep, then at 9:00 I have to leave for class. I'll be the first person on the planet to admit poor judgement/conversation/motor skills on limited sleep, and I'm dreading tomorrow. Fucking dud, ehh? This is the first time since '01 I'll pull an all-nighter without the aid of contraband psychotropics, and I'm a little worried I might go kinda crazy on like 25+ hours w/o sleep. Am I being paranoid, or is this a legitimate concern?

Remy (x Jeremy), Friday, 11 February 2005 04:54 (twenty years ago)

I dunno about that blog-collab, or whatever it's called. Would it obligate you to post regularly, or just bounce traffic yer way?

Actually, I'm really hoping on getting some people to join this community and bring to me what it is that I have been so desperately seeking, i.e. a fan-centric place to discuss fan-centric issues in an intelligent yet slightly exuberant and biased manner. It's really not much use trying to elicit that sort of thing from the people who hang out on this forum, so hopefully LJ might provide me with it instead.

And as for what you're going to be doing -- HOLY CRAP, I wish you the best of luck in attempting to get through that kind of day. Holy cow. I hope you'll be able to get some rest after all that.

Surreal Addiction (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 11 February 2005 06:12 (twenty years ago)

It sounds like you're looking for something like ILComics, only about Duran(x2) instead of funny books. ILC is an awesome forum that's loads of fun and nobody takes anything too seriously(because we all accept that we're hopeless nerds) yet there are often very intelligent discussions, and also extremely fannish blurts, and grotesque and vile (but still light-hearted and fun) list-making.
If you just spell Simon Le Bon as "John Byrne" and Nick Rhodes as "Chuck Austen", you should find everything you need on ILComics.

Huk-L, Friday, 11 February 2005 06:23 (twenty years ago)

ILComics is easily the best board, and I don't even care for most of the comics they talk about that much.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 11 February 2005 07:02 (twenty years ago)

Aww, crap! My shoot got moved back a few days due to rain. But not before I'd ingested 24oz. of cafe americano and my last two cigarettes. I'm fucking wired and I'll never sleep.

Remy (x Jeremy), Friday, 11 February 2005 07:26 (twenty years ago)

Welcome to my world.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 11 February 2005 11:46 (twenty years ago)

Ooh a new thread!

I wonder if Remy got any sleep last night. Or are you still up?

sgs (sgs), Friday, 11 February 2005 11:50 (twenty years ago)

I'm still up. But I've been working on a music video for a friend. Except that it's actually the video for Lionel Richie's "Hello", I've just re-cut it so that it goes with his song. I have no idea if he will properly appreciate this, however. We'll see!

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 11 February 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

Sounds good! I accidentally watched part of "Dancin' on the Ceiling" the other day.

I keep wanting to ask for opinions in general about company/product naming. I'm trying to come up with a name for my book projects (since I think that just calling it "Sgs's-real-name Books" is boring) and keep hitting on good things that then don't pass a quick google test. The latest possibility is Counterweight. I've picked out a drawing to use as logo thing: http://www.strangehorizons.com/2002/20020819/first.jpg and were "perpetual motion" not already claimed by a similar indie-press initiative, I'd have chosen that.

I keep making lists of cool words that relate tangentially to the little machine design. It reminds me of trying to come up with band names. I have also discovered I have a fondness for silent letters, particularly silent Gs.

sgs (sgs), Friday, 11 February 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

tonight is the Kings of Convenience show...i am aroused.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Friday, 11 February 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

I just got you a wee valentine's gift! :) (xpost - I love Chris, but not like *that* and not only because he refuses to put out)

I also just achieved a possible low point in my life by cutting my mouth on a spork. For fuck's sake.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 11 February 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

Have you tried going back to sleep? It's the only thing that'll make the suffering stop. Unless you can masturbate successfully, that'll help for a few minutes at least.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 11 February 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

Absolutely shop it around. Of course, it will probably drive your boss crazy.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 17 March 2005 22:25 (twenty years ago)

I'm not going to tell him shit.

sunburned and snowblind (kenan), Thursday, 17 March 2005 22:27 (twenty years ago)

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 17 March 2005 23:16 (twenty years ago)

But if I successfully sell it to a competing magazine, he'd try to sue me. I may have to use a nom de plume.

sunburned and snowblind (kenan), Friday, 18 March 2005 00:06 (twenty years ago)

Also have your interviewee use a nom de plume.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 18 March 2005 00:09 (twenty years ago)

TS: "nom de plume" vs. "nom de guerre"

sunburned and snowblind (kenan), Friday, 18 March 2005 00:10 (twenty years ago)

"Nom de boink".

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 18 March 2005 00:15 (twenty years ago)

"nom de shame"

sunburned and snowblind (kenan), Friday, 18 March 2005 00:16 (twenty years ago)

I love "nom de guerre." Your "war name." Like it's the name you assume when you've changed your hairstyle so many times now, you don't know what you look like.

sunburned and snowblind (kenan), Friday, 18 March 2005 00:19 (twenty years ago)

Frank Wannamaker may be best known for his cinematic turn as Jesus H. Christ, but what he really wants you to know about him is that he loves boats.

So the tech support guy asks me if thats me. I tell him no and he says "oh I just thought you were really full of yourself." Fuck you cocknocker.

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Friday, 18 March 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

But HE ˆˆˆˆ would have that picture as his wallpaper.

yeah he would.

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Friday, 18 March 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

But the tech guy wasn't even in the same room, so maybe he just didn't know.

Huk-L, Friday, 18 March 2005 15:09 (twenty years ago)

yes, huks right. he wasn't at my desk, he was accessing the pc remotely from upstairs. and im 1 of 1600 in the building so he wouldn't know my face. although more and more these days i am starting to resemble him...

I think that's my favorite one. Ricky Gervais, teen heartthrob/David Bowie impersonater. Speaking of David Bowie, when I was at Ayres last night buying shoes (it's a problem, I know) they had all these t-shirts in the juniors section with Debbie Harry and David Bowie and such on them. Not to get all rockist, but do most 14 year old girls know who they are?

I'd like to take this opportunity to say: WHAT THE HELL??? RICKY GERVAIS ONCE LOOKED LIKE THAT AND PERFORMED IN A NEW WAVE/NEW ROMANTIC OUTFIT?!?!?! Um, yeah, I'm mildly surprised by this revelation, is all.

OH! And talk about your full-circle moments -- I assume that some of you checked out that Seona Dancing fansite that's out there -- WELL... the owner/operator of that fansite is, according to what I see of her LJ, A TOTAL DURAN FANATIC! She also loves other artists, but... damn... you should go to her site, click on the LJ link therein, and see for yourselves.

Anyway, I wish I could add more to this entry, but I'm supposed to run a half billion errands before going off to a friend's son's birthday party, so I'm off like a bad toupee! (Oh yeah, and I finally caught up with this thing! Yay!)

hi & goodnight simultaneously, y'all.

Remy (x Jeremy), Monday, 21 March 2005 09:47 (twenty years ago)

Hello thread! British (and other) people, let's try and give the seppos something to wake up to on this thread today, okay?

First thing I discovered this am is that the company I used to work for, and own shares in, is being bought. Which, I think, means I am obliged to sell my shares to the buyer at 300p per share. Which is a shame, as I bought them at 316p a share. But hey ho - it's hardly my biggest shares disaster...

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 21 March 2005 10:25 (twenty years ago)

Seppos?

I have avoided share disasters by the strategy known as 'buying shares never once in your life crossing your mind'.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 21 March 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

Mm, I heard that on the radio this morning Mark. Didn't know you still had shares though! I follow the Path Of Martin, personally :)

Matt just paid me a surprise visit at work which was the best thing to happen to a Monday in ages. Especially as we are closed to students so I could just lock up and go for a looonnnngg coffee break with him. Wedding website under construction as we speak, and live webcast booked. Watch this space!

Archel (Archel), Monday, 21 March 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

Will the wedding website have flash games?

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 21 March 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

Dear Fuckers,

Thanks,

I think my pimp hand is losing it's strength - any ideas for a new title for part 29?

Don't Feed The Reaper?

Huk-L, Monday, 21 March 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

I've always loved the Wayne's World bit where Garth and Wayne are underneath the airplanes. And Garth gets really mad and starts yelling, but nobody can hear him over the jet roar. And his monologue seems terribly important, but all one can here are the last five words "'Till the handle comes off!" which I suggest as a title.

Remy (x Jeremy), Monday, 21 March 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

Part 29: OMG I'M ABOUT TO TURN 30

Which is how I feel, some days.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 21 March 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

here = hear

Remy (x Jeremy), Monday, 21 March 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

Part 29: Uncut penises are fabulous!

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 21 March 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

I would like a thread called "This is where I say: Snakes! I hate snakes!"

sunburned and snowblind (kenan), Monday, 21 March 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

My ideas are rubbish today, don't mind me. Except the ones involving Huk getting a new job.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 21 March 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

Part 29: OMG I'm about to guest host the insanely popular afternoon drive jazz show, normally hosted by a really acerbic dude who likes old lady jazz.

Huk-L, Monday, 21 March 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

PS, the forthcoming Martha Wainwright album is ridiculously good.

Huk-L, Monday, 21 March 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

Old lady jazz? As opposed to... hot young chick jazz? WTF does that mean?
