This is the Thread Where I Say Pt 26: And the Reindeer You Rode In On

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

Part 26 lasted almost a full month. Good job people.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 19 January 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

Well, I cut it off early, too.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

Is four weeks early for a Bris?

Huk-L, Wednesday, 19 January 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

I have a saved tab thing in my Firefox which is the start of a Bristol University web address, but it gets abbreviated to Bris. I wish I didn't know what it meant.

I got a payrise today! Yay me!

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

Aren't you the sole arbiter of these things Luna? If you rule them with an iron fist then who is to say it was cut off early?

Speaking of ruling with iron fists, are we making progress on the brothel project?

Ash (ashbyman), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

the title of this thread made me think of quotes I got from ken macleod's blog "The Early Days of a Better Nation" @ http://www.kenmacleod.blogspot.com/

'Work as if you lived in the early days of a better nation.' - Alasdair Gray.

"If these are the early days of a better nation, there must be hope, and a hope of peace is as good as any, and far better than a hollow hoarding greed or the dry lies of an aweless god." - Graydon Saunders

Sébastien Chikara (Sébastien Chikara), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

That's true, I am pretty bad ass.

The brothel is coming along slowly - you and I need to get together and figure out how exactly this goon thing is going to work, and what your compensation and benefits package will be.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

Well, ok, but really I was just listening to "New Year's Day".

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

I've started pestering the future again. Hey, they started it! But I'm gonna finish it. Finish it with funny. Yeah, you bet.
I've managed to sock away more money this month than every before, and I have a feeling that 2005 is going to be Year of the Huck.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 19 January 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

The Documentary Channel aired an HBO thing about a Nevada brothel last night. That channel is nasty!

Huk-L, Wednesday, 19 January 2005 18:50 (twenty years ago)

I don't understand these threads.

[It isn't inaugurated until someone says that.]

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

Life feels different this year, this is the first time I've been on ILX after for any length of time in ages. Okay, see ya, bye.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

I should have made this Pt 27: My Pimp Hand is Strong.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

Only I understand these threads.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

Hello hello hello.

I'm 27! = This thread and I are a perfect match!

One of my coworkers has been really snarky to me today. I don't think she knows my time here is almost up, but I don't feel like telling her. She's so out of the loop of the office gossip. Bwah ha ha!

I'm in pain again. I think it's women's troubles but it hasn't been this bad since I was a teenager. I think I'll go take some pills and disappear for a while. AY CARRUMBA. OW!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

I want pills that make me invisible and Spanish, dammit!

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

I'm sorry, I can only offer one or the other, not both.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

Well, it's easier to pretend to speak Spanish than to pretend to be invisible, so I guess that decides it.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

Also, no one ever says "I'm running around naked in church because I'm Spanish."

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 19:06 (twenty years ago)

Don't you put your pickle in my whiskey, pal.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

Sarah is 27 factorial!

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 19:08 (twenty years ago)

You can't even see the pickle, it's Spanish!

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 19:08 (twenty years ago)

Tep, we can start calling you Sal Muera.

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

I'm only pretending to speak Spanish, so I assume Sal Muera means "There is a sale on the dead."

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

I should have made this Pt 27: My Pimp Hand is Strong.

or Part 27: ...I was thinking a 75 ft pink neon sign that said BITCHES!

Your pimp hand is undoubtedly strong, that can be part 28, or part 112, you'll get around to it. As far as my hired goon benefits, I'd like my steroids at a discount, and my tuxedos dry cleaned free of charge.

I wonder what appropriate sunglasses are for hired goons these days, 80's Ray-Bans?

Ash (ashbyman), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

I assume Sal Muera means "There is a sale on the dead."

I am told it means 'pickle'.

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

Done, and done. I thought the negotiations would be far more tense.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

i thought the thread title was a Pulp lyric, or at least reminded me of one

kingfish (Kingfish), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

Oh man, I totally want to be a gangster named Sal "the Pickle" Muera. AND invisible.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

Luna you need post an ad around town that says "Hookers Unite! Ask me about our dental plan"

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

First Bad Guy (nervously): "Hey, do you smell vinegar or something?"
Second Bad Guy (freaking): "And dill! We better get out here. He's here!"
First Bad Guy: "He? Who's he?"
Second Bad Guy (running off): "Sal! Sal "the Pickle" Muera! He's invisible and when they find your body after he offs you, he leaves pickle slices on your eyes!"

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

And a bread and butter chip under your tongue!

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

But that lends itself to getting any old hosebeast off the street, jocelyn - I'm far too picky for that.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

Wait, I don't smell like vinegar!

I want a sidekick named Cornichon McFitch.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

Hosebeast is such a rich and lovely term. Luna you should hold multi-event tryouts, a "Holympics" as it were. ESPN would definitely televise it.

I should change my name, mine doesn't have a lot of "goon cache"

Vito?
Seamus?
Biff?
Boutros Boutros?

Once I decide on that I can start thinking of an appropriate honorific:

the LegBreaker
the Sledgehammer

Better would be something absurd, (the Egg Slicer, the Mandolin String, the Crockpot) while your assailant ponders its possible meaning I would crack them over the head and be done with it.

Ash (ashbyman), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 19:32 (twenty years ago)

Hosebeast!?!

I just learned that Boutros is Arabic for Peter.

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

What about Dill "The Kosher Kid" Gherkin?

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

A big giant no-neck bouncer goon should be named Dogbert.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 19 January 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

Ash, go with Bruno. That was my "Spanish name" in high school Spanish, and I always thought it sounded pretty badass and would go well with a dark suit and brass knuckles.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

My "Spanish name" was always Sara. :-(

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

My Spanish name is Hermano.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 19 January 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

I'll be your first patron, Luna.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

Hermano, COME ON!

Huk-L, Wednesday, 19 January 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

I like the idea of these Ho-lympics, though. When you win, do you get a gold circle condom?

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

Gold garters?

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 20:33 (twenty years ago)

Chiro vouchers?

Huk-L, Wednesday, 19 January 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

I think since you're talking about high class escorts here they should win something a little more classy - like a fancy birth control implant.

IN other news, My boss said I could get COBRA insurance with the company until I get insurance at my new job, but it's probably not worth the cost, right? I mean, I only have one perscription which isn't that expensive.

Anyway, they're paying me for my unused vacation days after all. And they're combining my last two paychecks. So my check next week will be beary nice. That's right. BEARY.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

Is a female john a jean?

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

at least your not like Gary Busey.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

And the fucking cunt who works on (different stuff) on the same files that I do has buggered them up and he's not in until 2 and that's when I have to have these files FINISHED for him, but I can't even fucking open them because he's FUCKED them UP and if he was here this morning, I'd probably kick his fucking ass back to Kitchener.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 9 February 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

Ha I am just getting ready for my annual appraisal and on the 'staff development needs' section I've said 'would like possibly to do the assertiveness workshop maybe'. Sigh.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

Huk, Archel's giving you material!

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

But seriously folks. The last time I spoke to my boss about that kind of thing, I actually *requested* an appraisal as this company doesn't seem to do them. I'm going to try and sit down with my bosses (i.e. my mum) this week and flesh out my current role. It's the beginning of exciting upwards momentume, I tells ya!

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

Consider it stolen!

So I just took a rather long and boring phone call from someone asking for info on something, and I had to wait while she found a pen, and I was all (to myself), "Damn it, you should have a pen ready when you call me. Quit wasting my time with your nincompoopery! I have a lot to do today!"
And then when I hung up, I went back to reading the Green Lantern message board.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 9 February 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

if it was the end of May, I could totally do it, as I'll be in New England for a wedding. Maybe we can do one anyway, Chris?

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 17:33 (twenty years ago)

Dee - fuck them, we dig you, post here when you feel like it. *hugs*

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

Absolutely!

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

I'll be in MA until May 17th--will I miss your visit Luna?

sgs (sgs), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

Yep, I get to Maine on the 16th, and I wouldn't be able to get to MA until the end of that week. Damn!

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

Aw, yuck. I want to go to Maine! I've never been there. I think Mark and I may be taking a road trip up to Vermont/Lake Champlain but Maine's a bit far for the time we've got on this visit.

Ah well, we'll have to go back to Cali sometime :)

sgs (sgs), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

I might be able to get there on the 14th instead, and if I can change it, I'll let you know!

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

Everything I did yesterday was ruined by the night guy. Fuck this town.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 9 February 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

Huck, your hate is beginning to worry me :(

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

Worry you? Worry you? I'm the one living this nightmare!

I haven't been sleeping well, and I'm behind on some freelance stuff (that I may never get done) and haven't even figured out what I'm doing for this comedy contest thing that closes Sunday and I'm just at this point where I feel like I've got nothing to look forward to, and I'm frustrated and lonely and bitter...and yeah.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 9 February 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

I just think you're pretty rad, but sometimes you just seem so desperately unhappy, and it comes out in humour or in bitterness. It makes me sad to think of you being unhappy.

< /emo >

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for your concern.
I'm not really THAT unhappy. It probably comes across worse than it really is on TITTWIS because I (maybe unfairly) knee-jerkingly vent here. My posts on ILComics are 98% angst-free (unless you count my recent gnashing over Ed Brubaker's defection to Marvel).

Huk-L, Wednesday, 9 February 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

Rant away - that's what we're here for. I do hope you find a more satisfying job this year though - you deserve better than those fuckers.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

I've got my radio show to look forward to tonight. And it's probably going to remain two hours long for the foreseeable future, since the rap kids that were supposed to be taking over my second hour came in for an orientation and after learning that they could never ever scratch with the station's turntables haven't been heard from.
I'm partly relieved, since I really like doing two hours. But my music collection hasn't been growing very fast, so I feel like I repeat a lot of music and therefore am not doing the best show I could be doing, BUT I don't think there are too many people who listen EVERY week, so, at worst, they might be hearing the same artist twice a month, which is really no big whoop.

Most of my troubles would vanish into the ether if I was better at chilling the fuck out.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 9 February 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

This coffee is make me buzz out! Zabba hey goob nobba waaaaaah yip yip yip!!!

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 22:14 (twenty years ago)

I like Doo-Wop.

Huk-L, Thursday, 10 February 2005 00:42 (twenty years ago)

hello, thread.

Orbit (Orbit), Thursday, 10 February 2005 01:43 (twenty years ago)

Hello, Orbit. I've been waiting for you.

Thread, Thursday, 10 February 2005 01:47 (twenty years ago)

I knew you wouldn't let me down.

Orbit (Orbit), Thursday, 10 February 2005 01:48 (twenty years ago)

So sorry, guys. I wasn't looking for sympathy so much as I was venting out some very frustrating, er, frustrations about this forum, which I do have to say reminds me of this town in how much of a love/hate affair I have with this place. Okay, and another big frustration I have with this place -- with all of the adulation for (I'm sorry to mention them again) Duran Duran that apparently went on with the "DD: Classic or Dud" thread on ILM, I would've thought more people would've actually, you know, shown some fannishness toward the band, which I haven't really seen in anyone aside from Ned, who ACTUALLY mentioned listening to them unprovoked. ARGH. I'm sorry, I guess I should be "over" them by now (*rolls eyes*), but FUCK, their music is the foundation on which I have laid my entire musical fanhood from 1991 onward, and their music is also, either consciously or subconsciously, the yardstick by which I end up determining what is "good" and "bad" musically, so they're pretty fucking important to me, and I don't like this written off at all, esp not from a community of music fans that purports to have an unconventionally positive view of the band's music, but oh, I guess every album the band's released since 1983 hasn't exactly been Rio, has it???

Fuck. I'm so sorry about this all, but I am so desperately in need of airing these frustrations and Issues SOMEWHERE and, well, you guys put up with me the best, so....

Surreal Addiction (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 10 February 2005 04:46 (twenty years ago)

Also, if I could tie up everyone who works for the music department at Entertainment Weekly and beat them all to a fatally bloody death, that would be ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL, thanks.

Surreal Addiction (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 10 February 2005 04:48 (twenty years ago)

Hi all, mp3 gmail request: lil' ghetto boys (on the chronic) & the soul song (marvin gaye?) which it refernces, and I think I'm back on this thread for real again. I haven't been an active participant since August, but I'll try real hard to participate now. Honest, folks. Also: tomorrow marks my one-year ILX anniversary. After a spotty Dec / Jan, I'm in full, manic, creative upswing for February. Rare form, indeed.

Remy (x Jeremy), Thursday, 10 February 2005 05:00 (twenty years ago)

It's been since August? Really? Well, welcome back, I made you shoofly pie!

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 10 February 2005 09:59 (twenty years ago)

Dee, I'm sorry, I'm really pretty meh towards Duran Duran. I have never been able to see what there is to make a fuss about, even if The Reflex and Girls on Film are decent pop songs. You're the second Duran obsessive I've known and I didn't get her, either (she played me "medazzaland" and was very disappointed I didn't think it was special), but it's clear that for some people there is *something* amazing there. The thing is, why do you need other people to feel it?

One other thing you and this other girl have in common is that you're evangelists for the band's *later* work. The problem is, to lots of people a band's appeal begins to wear off after a while - not only do they have the potential problem of running out of ideas, but the pressure to come up with stuff that's a) as good as before and b) sufficiently fresh must be immense. Fans are fickle, most of them, and there's always something else out there to distract them with shiny newness.

Did you know W3s out of the band died recently? That's really sad.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 10 February 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

i find myself scared shitless when interpols video for "evil" is on tv. me no like.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Thursday, 10 February 2005 13:26 (twenty years ago)

I love my sister. She just texted me: 'just eaten old chicken which i think has poisoned me. if i am dying will you come to my house instead? if it passes i'll see you in pub'.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 10 February 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

Morning.

Huk-L, Thursday, 10 February 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

Where IS that olde thread on poems for weddings? I'm sure there was one. Help? Thanks for the ee cummings btw Chris, it's lovely.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 10 February 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

Hi! Just thought i'd say.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 10 February 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

I think duran duran are fucking brilliant! "The Reflex" was the first video I ever saw on MTV.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 10 February 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

Arena was one of the first albums I ever picked out for myself (after the Empire Strikes Back two-record soundtrack) , and "View To A Kill" was my first 7".

Huk-L, Thursday, 10 February 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

Archel, is this what you mean?

what we talk about when we talk about love

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 10 February 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

Hm, no... I did find that one when I searched ILB. I had an idea there was a much more substantial one somewhere. Possibly just in my brain. Thanks though!

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 10 February 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

I remember there being a more in-depth thread on that subject too...

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 10 February 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

aw, that reminded me of the old 97's, which makes me miss sam.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 10 February 2005 17:00 (twenty years ago)

no, not just in your brain, archel. i think it might have been 2002 sometime, because i remember sending it to a friend who was planning her wedding...

JuliaA (j_bdules), Thursday, 10 February 2005 17:00 (twenty years ago)

okay, is it wedding that you were looking for? it was the one i was thinking of, anyway...

JuliaA (j_bdules), Thursday, 10 February 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

Yes! Thank you :)

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 10 February 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

I should start a new one of these today - any suggestions?

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 10 February 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

This is the Thread Where I Say Pt 28: I think my good friend is fucking my sister.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Thursday, 10 February 2005 18:04 (twenty years ago)

Maybe flick back through this thread and take a choice phrase that tickles your fanny?

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 10 February 2005 18:05 (twenty years ago)

An interesting choice...

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 10 February 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

It is done: This is the Thread Where I Say Pt 28: My Pimp Hand is Strong

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 10 February 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

I started my show last night by playing the 90s cartoon Batman theme, and then saying "Music Nerds are a cowardly and superstitious lot..."
and then the whole show was downhill from there.

xpost
