Is there already a thread for questions that don't really deserve their own thread?

And if not can this be it? I want to do this quite often.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Sunday, 13 February 2005 04:43 (twenty-one years ago)

you never know what questions will blossom into remarkable threads!

teeny (teeny), Sunday, 13 February 2005 04:51 (twenty-one years ago)

B...b...but I am embarrassed! Often they are poncey or obvious or something.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Sunday, 13 February 2005 04:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Here's a question that probably doesn't warrant either its own thread (or asking for that matter): is there a more irritating combination of words than "pazz & jop"?

Bryan (Bryan), Sunday, 13 February 2005 05:01 (twenty-one years ago)

HI DERE I LOVE SPAZZ J_POP

Sébastien Chikara (Sébastien Chikara), Sunday, 13 February 2005 05:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Unposted Topic Cache is similar to this thread

Sébastien Chikara (Sébastien Chikara), Sunday, 13 February 2005 05:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Ok cool! Sebastien's linkthread is kinda for things you don't really want answers to, they can LIVE ON TOGETHA etc.

Is "pazz and jop" that bad? I quite like both, on their own. Especially "jop".

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Sunday, 13 February 2005 05:28 (twenty-one years ago)

(I actually started this thread because I have been going *crazy* trying to work out in which book/play/film whatever the bad guy dies (I think?) and then someone else says "he had his noble moment" and then relates a nice thing he did, once. I think that's pretty much exactly the line but it matches nothing on google. It will be something horrendously embarrassing I know but GOING CRAZY HERE)

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Sunday, 13 February 2005 05:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I'm sure "pazz & jop" is just fine, I just hate anything fun, clever, or catchy.

Bryan (Bryan), Sunday, 13 February 2005 05:33 (twenty-one years ago)

What film am I going to see today?

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 13 February 2005 10:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Greg, you seem to have forgotten to post to the underwear thread.

Markelby (Mark C), Sunday, 13 February 2005 11:01 (twenty-one years ago)

is there an english word that sounds like "veux"?
in case I have to explain how to pronounce "d'la beu"

Haha I was about to start this thread again, I was just checking if anyone else had thought of the same idea.

OK SO: What does 'professional' mean on roomshare offers (in the UK if specific)? If I am 22 with a fancy degree, working in retail/temp as a gap year before lawyer school, but sometimes also jump around the spot when I am excited, am I professional?

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Monday, 7 November 2005 05:50 (twenty years ago)

(the play I ws asking about upthread was Queen Mary btw. I can't think of any good examples for sebastien :( )

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Monday, 7 November 2005 05:53 (twenty years ago)

'professionally employed' i would assume so i don't think you qualify

john p. irrelevant (electricsound), Monday, 7 November 2005 05:54 (twenty years ago)

could be wrong though

john p. irrelevant (electricsound), Monday, 7 November 2005 05:54 (twenty years ago)

I was wondering about that too.

That is this thread.

Alba, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 22:33 (eighteen years ago)

You mean, it's just because ILX works on HTTP port 8080? I don't see how that turned it into meaning "on the money".

Alba, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 22:34 (eighteen years ago)

It was decreed that we needed new memes. Which kind of doesn't make sense, but if it stops people saying "cosign" (ohmigod cringe cringe) then hell, 8080 to your heart's content.

Mark C, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 23:24 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, can I make a request for people to stop doing strikethroughs and writing "fixed" underneath because it makes me want to kick ILX's face in?

Alba, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 23:29 (eighteen years ago)

But smug gits is what ILX is all about! =)

blueski, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 12:22 (eighteen years ago)

OK, I have a minor question which doesn't deserve its own thread:

When did the practice (in British TV only - maybe just BBC) of announcing the current theatrical activities of the actors you'd just seen ("And Paul Eddington is currently appearing as Sally Bowles in Trevor Nunn's production of Cabaret on HMS Dreadnought in Cardiff Docks") over the closing credits of a show end? And how did they get away with it for so many years?

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 12:24 (eighteen years ago)

Great question, greatly put.

Were they just better times?

blueski, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 12:25 (eighteen years ago)

Yes. Yes, I think they were.

Diane Keen is currently appearing as Coriolanus in Craig Charles' production of Sarah Kane's No Sex, Please, We're Psychotic at all Harvester restaurants everywhere until the 3rd of the month.

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 12:46 (eighteen years ago)

I distinctly remember the one for Leslie Schofield in No Place Like Home ("BERYL!"). "...can currently be seen in Where Did You Last See Your Trousers..." or something.

blueski, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 12:50 (eighteen years ago)

Why is it that the chinese food delivery i order doesn't come in those carton boxes you see in movies?

What is this?

Alba, Monday, 23 April 2007 15:01 (eighteen years ago)

it's a bottle of japanese rice wine

RJG, Monday, 23 April 2007 15:09 (eighteen years ago)

Ah ha! My problem was searching for masa and mune as separate words.

Does sake go off?

Alba, Monday, 23 April 2007 15:13 (eighteen years ago)

it doesn't have a best before end?

maybe that's what the japanese characters are

RJG, Monday, 23 April 2007 15:15 (eighteen years ago)

There's more writing on the back. I don't know if I can be bothered to take a picture of it, though.

Alba, Monday, 23 April 2007 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

the people in dictionary corner do have access to dictionaries though which would make making real words out of letters a bit easier I assume

RJG, Monday, 23 April 2007 15:31 (eighteen years ago)

Hmmm - not really. It's seeing the words in the letter soup that's the issue when you're up against the clock.

It's a similar issue to that faced by Radio 4. On the one hand, it's supposed to be a station defined by its intellect, but on the other, it is propped up by (or saddled with) a certain middle-aged homeliness which is not really anything to do with intellect at all. So you get inane-but-posh panel games that are not much more brainy than ITV Play, really. But they can't just jettison them without listener revolt.

Alba, Monday, 23 April 2007 15:33 (eighteen years ago)

but they have a fairly small rotation of celebrity guests, whom i assume they pick because they're quite good at words.

i'm choosing not to believe the behind-the-scenes conspiracy theorists. it's insulting to Richard's memory.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 23 April 2007 15:33 (eighteen years ago)

Ledge - I didn't see Celebrity Countdown. That's interesting. The odds of it all being a terrible fraud that props up the class system are stacking up.

Alba, Monday, 23 April 2007 15:34 (eighteen years ago)

Those electronic crossword solvers rearrange the letters in the soup to find words for you.

C J, Monday, 23 April 2007 15:35 (eighteen years ago)

Why do people ask for cash with a receipt when using the cash machine, THEN LEAVE THE CHUFFING RECEIPT BEHIND????

I mean, you actually have to push a specific button to get a receipt these days, you actually have to make a conscious decision to request one, yet still people leave the papery little fuckers flapping around for the next person to deal with.

WHY????

Hello Sunshine, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 18:25 (eighteen years ago)

two months pass...

You often have to choose "Cash no reciept" or "Cash with receipt" and it's easy to press the wrong button. I think I have, a couple of times. I did take the receipt with me though.

Why are nearly all swimming pools blue?

*rumpie*, Thursday, 30 August 2007 16:12 (eighteen years ago)

They be reflectin the sky!

Mark G, Thursday, 30 August 2007 16:13 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not satisfied with that response, please provide me with a better one thx

*rumpie*, Thursday, 30 August 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

because people are used to the sea looking blue on account of it reflecting the sky, so when pools are made they're made to look familiar and welcoming and comforting in the same fashion. i'd imagine.

i don't want to get into a red swimming pool, fo sho.

two weeks pass...

This is driving me nuts. On a "Year In Chat" compendium of Parkinson interviews from 1973, there was an appearance by a well-spoken union leader. His name was short and reminded me of someone else's. I looked him up afterwards and it seemed he was a big figure from the time, who made many such appearances.

Who was he?

Alba, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 12:21 (eighteen years ago)

Len Murray?

Noodle Vague, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 12:24 (eighteen years ago)

Jack Jones?

Ned Trifle II, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 12:24 (eighteen years ago)

Len Murray was elected leader of the TUC in 1973 so that makes him a good candidate.

Ned Trifle II, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 12:27 (eighteen years ago)

Dunno, but that chat up there about "where does 8080 come from?" was enlightening. I had thought it was maybe an emoticon depicting a person vigorously nodding their head in agreement.

dell, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 12:28 (eighteen years ago)

Murray was much more of a compromising git than Jones, as I remember, and I'm pretty sure I can remember him doing plenty of TV.

Noodle Vague, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 12:30 (eighteen years ago)

Vic Feather (who preceeded Len Murray as head of the TUC) was definitely on Parkinson but I don't think he was well-spoken.

Ned Trifle II, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 12:33 (eighteen years ago)

It wasn't Len Murray, Jack Jones, or Vic Feather.

It's likely some flavor of link-farming, but what I find interesting is the presence of full-width full stops in the domain names. I hadn't seen that before, although it makes sense.

So there's a diner in my town that's open for three meals a week: Saturday breakfast, Sunday brunch and Wednesday dinner. What the fuck's up with that? I know two of those three are aiming at the church crowds, but how can any restaurant stay in business doing that?

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 23:30 (seventeen years ago)

It's probably a front for something else. A church?

Alba, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 23:33 (seventeen years ago)

this place is only open two nights a week! 3 (out of 4) stars from the Chicago Tribune. I don't expect them to be in business much longer (very crappy location).
