What do I need to know? What don't I need to know? Which program should I use for downloading music? What accessories should I buy/avoid?

TELL ME EVERYTHING YOU KNOW.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

A case is all you need. I use slsk and email to get new music from folkses.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:02 (twenty years ago)

i still use soulseek but ye gods does it basically blow now. i really couldn't reccommend it to someone just starting to dl as the 'search' function is crapped out a bit. as for accessories i'd definitely reccommend itrip which is super useful and super fun. does anyone have any good/cheap headphone reccommendations? i'm still using the ones what came with.

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:06 (twenty years ago)

i can recommend headphones, but none of them come cheap.

luna, apple just lowered ipod prices yesterday, you should check to make sure you didn't get hosed.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:08 (twenty years ago)

also, a good soulseek search tip is to "search for files in room" from the ilm room

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:08 (twenty years ago)

that works marginally better than regular search (ie. it sometimes turns up results)

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:09 (twenty years ago)

Don't let it cold. Be careful with those Belkin FM transmitters.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:10 (twenty years ago)

My girlfriend told me that when she bought her ipod, they discouraged her from buying an fm transmitter because 'most of the frequencies in LA have been used and it wouldn't be very clear' - I have no idea if this is true or not.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:12 (twenty years ago)

xpost i thought itrip was a big disappointment; dense radio market means you may have trouble getting a clear spot. and it runs your battery out something quick. and the tuning bleep things mean you can't shuffle w/o having one of them turn up eventually.

f--gg (gcannon), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:14 (twenty years ago)

you need a "dead" frequency for it to work. check your local radio for some nice hiss.

The Argunaut (sexyDancer), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:14 (twenty years ago)

Ive heard that itrip is bullshit in LA. You have to practically hold the ipod right up to the radio to get anything. If you have a tapedeck in your car, the discman stereo tape converter is the greatest accessory ever.

Dude, are you a 15 year old asian chick? (jingleberries), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:16 (twenty years ago)

yeah i 'search for files in room' and 'search for files in user list' all the time, it's still not nearly as effective in finding stuff as it was say six months ago (and this is with privileges, without them i understand search basically doesn't work at all). i can leave it on for hours - sleep, get up/shower, go to class - and come home and have like only one wishlist item found: this is a far cry from how it used to be.

luna that's probably true - although i actually occasionally really like it when i get some bleedthru! i'm in rural georgia and only have like maybe three stations i can depend on finding free of interference so i can imagine how the la market is

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:17 (twenty years ago)

blount i'm still going to recommend the same ones i've recommended earlier, i think in a link braching off from here - Headphones - either the Koss PortaPros, or for really really clean sound the antediluvian Grado SR-60s .. both are around $60 and both will last a good long while. (possible difference-maker: the Grados have a very long thick cord, while the PortaPros have a walker/jogger-friendly very very short cord)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:18 (twenty years ago)

once i pulled up next to a car that was also using itrip and our itrips started bleeding into each other omg gary numan was right

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:19 (twenty years ago)

Elvis Telecom to thread!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:22 (twenty years ago)

The Koss's should be under $40.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:23 (twenty years ago)

I bought Koss PortaPros and can no longer conscionably use them because they force everybody else to listen to Speedy J whenever I decide to. I hate hate hate headphones that bleed out into the surrounding area like that. Those fucking over-the-ear things from Sony are the worst for that.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:25 (twenty years ago)

iTrip: I returned mine because it would be static unless I held it RIGHT up to my car stereo. I got the cassette adapter and I'm much happier.

HOWEVER, it's nice to have if you want to play a tune for someone on their car or home stereo, and to be fair it worked much better in everone else's car besides mine.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:25 (twenty years ago)

Hey they just dropped the mini price down to a semi-reasonable amount!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:26 (twenty years ago)

iTrip has worked okay for me. It does drain the battery faster, but it's nice being able to play it in my car, a friend's car, around the house, at poker night, etc. Instead of carrying a ghetto blaster, I just carry my iTrip that turns all radios into MY ghetto blaster (long as I can access the frequency tuner.)

I mostly use mine between here (Little Rock) and Memphis, so finding a free frequency isn't really a problem.

the tuning bleep things mean you can't shuffle w/o having one of them turn up eventually.

This is why I programmed my Smart Playlist, MINUS GRIFFIN.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:40 (twenty years ago)

Tom those Koss joints are like Fort Knox compared to Grados. I think the Grado company literally just took smal boom Box speakers and strapped them onto their heads and started doing air guitar and figured they should start a company.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:40 (twenty years ago)

I think that's how Microsoft started too.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:46 (twenty years ago)

doesn't Koss guarantee their headphones for life?

The Argunaut (sexyDancer), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:46 (twenty years ago)

I got an iPod Sock and it's cool. See if you can find some friends who are willing to share the expense, though, as you have to pay some ridiculous amount for six of them.

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:53 (twenty years ago)

o man does anyone have the armband???

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:54 (twenty years ago)

I just roll mine up in my short sleeve like a pack of cigs.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 24 February 2005 23:09 (twenty years ago)

How come peopl euse slsk rather than bit torrent sites?

paulhw (paulhw), Thursday, 24 February 2005 23:20 (twenty years ago)

we lazy

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 24 February 2005 23:26 (twenty years ago)

I use Koss PortaPros (which are guaranteed for life - I JUST got mine back after I broke them) and iTrip (only good for country drives, don't work well in Bay Area).

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 24 February 2005 23:33 (twenty years ago)

Hey a Headphone related query (non iPod): I just bought some new Koss Pro4AA which are the old school audio cans and while I like them, they're not very loud (compared to my $24 radio shack silver eggs), you can crank them way up and they don't respond much... is this common for giant old school phones? Do I need a separate amp?

andy -0-, Friday, 25 February 2005 00:02 (twenty years ago)

http://store.apple.com/Catalog/Australia/Images/ipodsockslearnmore.jpg

hahaha!

I'm offloading my 20gb one to my sister so I'm going to upgrade to the 60gb Photo one, now it's not as stupidly expen$$$ive.

haitch (haitch), Friday, 25 February 2005 00:13 (twenty years ago)

xpost
according to some posts at head-fi.org, yes those really do benefit from an amp.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 25 February 2005 00:20 (twenty years ago)

I want a photo-pod!

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Friday, 25 February 2005 00:21 (twenty years ago)

Apple really needs to make a phone.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 25 February 2005 00:27 (twenty years ago)

shouldn't the title of the thread be "iCaved"

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Friday, 25 February 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

GROAN!

j blount (papa la bas), Friday, 25 February 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

Yes! Shorthand for buying an iPod should now be: "iCaved"

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Friday, 25 February 2005 00:32 (twenty years ago)

Okay so what happens if you try to skip a song and it freezes?

luna's eeeee, Saturday, 26 February 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

Um, please help me.

luna's eeeee, Saturday, 26 February 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

The Koss PortaPro's are so completely great. Mine broke just recently (after a year and a half or so of very, very intense use) so I need to get around to sending them in.

They look a little goofy tho, but it's totally worth it for the sound quality and price (mine were $30 direct from Koss.)

stephen morris (stephen morris), Saturday, 26 February 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

Also, the iTrip is great when 1) you have the iPod car adapter and don't have to worry about battery life and 2) you don't live in a saturated radio area. It's also nice to just set your iPod right next to your stereo and not have to worry about chords or CD's or anything when playing music.

stephen morris (stephen morris), Saturday, 26 February 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

yes yes, but can you tell me how to fix it when it freezes?

luna's eeeee, Saturday, 26 February 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

Do you have the normal iPod or the iPod mini?

stephen morris (stephen morris), Saturday, 26 February 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

For the regular iPod - hold down the play button and the menu button for 10 seconds.

For the iPod mini - hold down the menu and the select button for 10 seconds.

stephen morris (stephen morris), Saturday, 26 February 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

the normal one - 40gb

luna's eeeee, Saturday, 26 February 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

Oh it was menu and the center button - thank you, I owe you a pie.

luna's eeeee, Saturday, 26 February 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

From

http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/tutorial/ip_gettingstarted_t14.html

'If your iPod freezes, press and hold the Menu and Select buttons until the Apple logo appears. You should have to hold the buttons down for about 6 to 10 seconds.'

The apple support site is really easy to navigate.

Ed (dali), Saturday, 26 February 2005 21:44 (twenty years ago)

Cos it's perfectly acceptable for your iPod to freeze, obv.

(my ipod fails FAR more often than my PC ever has. For what it's worth)

Markelby (Mark C), Sunday, 27 February 2005 00:05 (twenty years ago)

I was a little upset by it as I only got it two days ago.

luna (luna.c), Sunday, 27 February 2005 00:09 (twenty years ago)

It seemed like mine froze once or twice in the first week too. It hasn't happened enough for me to notice (maybe once every month or two?) since then, so I wouldn't worry too much.

Also, taunting me with pies = so cold!

stephen morris (stephen morris), Sunday, 27 February 2005 00:12 (twenty years ago)

I never make false pie promises... next time you're in LA...

luna (luna.c), Sunday, 27 February 2005 00:15 (twenty years ago)

may i suggest a helping of cherry pie?

Jimmy Mod Has Returned With Spices And Silks (ModJ), Sunday, 27 February 2005 00:20 (twenty years ago)

Why am I hearing strains of Warrant in my head?

luna (luna.c), Sunday, 27 February 2005 00:21 (twenty years ago)

Brain tumor?

stephen morris (stephen morris), Sunday, 27 February 2005 00:22 (twenty years ago)

It would make a certain amount of sense.

luna (luna.c), Sunday, 27 February 2005 00:23 (twenty years ago)
