note: it's not viral marketing if you never ever plan to see the shitty movie!

Kingfish MuffMiner 2049er (Kingfish), Saturday, 5 March 2005 02:40 (twenty years ago)

That movie looks so horrible.

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Saturday, 5 March 2005 02:40 (twenty years ago)

I fail to see how this movie can be bad.

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 5 March 2005 02:41 (twenty years ago)

Of course, 75% of the RottenTomatoes posse thinks otherwise.

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 5 March 2005 02:41 (twenty years ago)

It barely looks like him...

UMA IS AGING

kingfish van vlasic pickles (Kingfish), Saturday, 5 March 2005 02:59 (twenty years ago)

Why couldn't this movie just be The Rock, Vince Vaughn, and Christina Milian? I would see that.

daria g (daria g), Saturday, 5 March 2005 03:04 (twenty years ago)

I fail to see how this movie can be bad.

Um, please explain.

Aaron A., Saturday, 5 March 2005 03:07 (twenty years ago)

Well, I like the director, I like the cast, I liked Get Shorty, ergo, I'd like to think the movie's not as shitty as folk say.

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 5 March 2005 03:09 (twenty years ago)

So are Vin and Rock competing for the Quickest Move From Action Hero To Action Hero But With Comedic CharAZMA award for Oscars 2006? Is it possible to jump the shark too early?

donut debonair (donut), Saturday, 5 March 2005 03:25 (twenty years ago)

Gear is right. It looks terrible. The previews look terrible, never mind the reviews, and never mind that it has a lot of great people in it.

Fish fingers all in a line (kenan), Saturday, 5 March 2005 05:02 (twenty years ago)

However, I hear the Rock is great in it.

Rock is brave, fully invested in his character, and with a wide-open face and foolish grin, outrageously funny. It's a singular performance achieved without condescension or camp. Who'd a-thunk it?

Village Voice -- Michael Atkinson

Fish fingers all in a line (kenan), Saturday, 5 March 2005 05:07 (twenty years ago)

i think in the Christina Milian thread a few days ago slocki said it's a terrible, terrible movie

kingfish van vlasic pickles (Kingfish), Saturday, 5 March 2005 08:32 (twenty years ago)

i read the novel when it came out a few years ago. it was kinda funny i guess.

the movie looks shitty though.

latebloomer: Klicken für Details (latebloomer), Saturday, 5 March 2005 08:51 (twenty years ago)

I think The Rock is a great guy.

Fish fingers all in a line (kenan), Saturday, 5 March 2005 08:52 (twenty years ago)

The Rock obviously believes his movie career is the way to go though, as they let his WWE contract expire earlier this year.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 5 March 2005 09:08 (twenty years ago)

According to his IMDB listing, he'll be starring in the Johnny Bravo flick.

maybe he'll grow out his elvis sideburns for that again.

kingfish van vlasic pickles (Kingfish), Saturday, 5 March 2005 09:25 (twenty years ago)

Ebert OTM:
""Be Cool" becomes a classic species of bore: a self-referential movie with no self to refer to. One character after another, one scene after another, one cute line of dialogue after another, refers to another movie, a similar character, a contrasting image, or whatever. The movie is like a bureaucrat who keeps sending you to another office."

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Saturday, 5 March 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

I love the way Ebert explains *why* a movie is bad, and takes special care to when he suspects you're going to see it anyway. His review confirmed the suspicions I had when I first saw the preview and the joke about "the Cadillac of Hybrids." So... er... is that a joke about how that was once a joke? Because it's not funny anymore.

He does overestimate Travolta, I think. He's not *that* charming.

Fish fingers all in a line (kenan), Saturday, 5 March 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

I can't love him anymore after seeing these pictures... and when did Steven Tyler turn into a really old Rachel Leigh Cook?

luna's cee, Saturday, 5 March 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

No one has mentioned that the Rock plays a gay guy in denial in this movie!

Also: Christina Milian OMG OMG OMG.

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 5 March 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

Do you think he's doing "It Doesn't Matter" here? Are those two dancers Melky Sedeck in disguise?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 5 March 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

The Rock is a Democrat, actually. Or so said Mick Foley. I read it somewhere on the Daily Kos..

daria g (daria g), Saturday, 5 March 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

You mean that really is Hootie in the BK ads? I've been in "Nah, that can't be..." mode since I first started seeing those.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Saturday, 5 March 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

Not the greatest movie -- nowhere near as good as the book. The Rock is enjoyable, though.
