Hey Melbourne! I'm in the streets of YOUR town... (Rob B FAP: Sunday March 20th, 5pm at Windsor Castle.)

As part of my ongoing travels (Help me with travel tips for Southeast Asia! (and Melbourne, Australia too!)), I've just landed in Sydney and am taking advantage of some free internet thingy, awaiting my flight to Melbourne. I'm damn near delirious with lack of sleep after 2 flights already, so I figure this is a good time to start a thread...

So will you local types FAP while I'm around? I'm only here until the 23rd. I'm staying with a friend who I've just realised may not be very central - he's in some place called Prahran. Where's dat?

Anyway, suggestions for a good place to consume adult beverages are welcome.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 14 March 2005 21:00 (twenty years ago)

Now you people best watch out for that Rob character, he's a caution!

(The Melbourne crew are all good folks. Ask them to take to you to an Italian coffee place. But if Michael says Starbucks, you may mock him gently.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 March 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

trayce and adam are both near prahran..

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Monday, 14 March 2005 22:16 (twenty years ago)

Indeed we are! And Prahran isnt that far out of the city, also it is better for shopping and stuff than the CBD anyway.

We should all have a FAP... say, at Revolver, or Pause, or Lizard Lounge or I dunno somewhere.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 14 March 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

And I think we should ALL FAP this time!

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 14 March 2005 22:46 (twenty years ago)

Prahran honestly is awful. There are really NO good pubs around here.

Maybe the Espy front bar?

Sasha (sgh), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 01:31 (twenty years ago)

Meh.. I dunno.. I dont much like the Espy... too many tourists, its always packed and so noisy you have to shout.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 01:46 (twenty years ago)

Wah, this is starting to make me want to come back to Melbourne and I can't for a long while. :-(

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 01:48 (twenty years ago)

Besides, theres some ok places in Prahran! Revolver is pretty cool (if a bit overpriced). There's always the Local, or Pause on Carlisle st in St Kilda...

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 01:54 (twenty years ago)

Prahran honestly is awful. There are really NO good pubs around here.

Windsor Castle?

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 01:58 (twenty years ago)

YES. That place rocks, and is nicely in-the-middle. And easy for everyone to get to.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 02:04 (twenty years ago)

Wait - Windsor Castle is the one wiht the pink elephants, yes?

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 02:04 (twenty years ago)

depends on what you've been drinking. ;)

'haitch' (haitch), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 02:08 (twenty years ago)

Hahah ;)

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 02:09 (twenty years ago)

Yeah that's the one.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 02:18 (twenty years ago)

a sure fire way to get me to NOT come would be to have it at the espy. i've never been to the windsor castle..

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 02:20 (twenty years ago)

When, ya bastards?

I only champion the Starbucks because of all the anal coffee snobs around here.

Michael Stuchbery (Mikey Bidness), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 02:21 (twenty years ago)

Windsor Castle is a nice pub - very dark and "pubby" with daggy wallpaper and stuff, a bit like the Roch I suppose, only newer done up, and they do nice food and have a beer garden I think.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 03:30 (twenty years ago)

Awesome, I can do that, it's a ten minute drive.

Michael Stuchbery (Mikey Bidness), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 03:35 (twenty years ago)

Yeah its just off Punt Rd so it's pretty accessible to all, I would think.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 03:41 (twenty years ago)

As for the when, maybe we should leave that bit up to Rob when he re-appears =)

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 03:52 (twenty years ago)

i'm back! and so. very. tired...
my friend justin has mentioned some of those places too (his band has played at that revolver place apparently), so i'll default to you guys - this windsor pub sounds good.

as for the difficult question of when... how does thursday work for everyone? justin's got a pretty busy social schedule for me already, but thursday he's playing soccer and doing studio stuff, so i'm just roaming the streets. apparently it's a quick walk to windsor castle place from where i am. what say you lot?

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 06:36 (twenty years ago)

It would be so funny if it was one of the 2 Justins I know.. heh.

Hey Thursday should be fine for me, not like I'm doing anything... can we get a consensus from the POSSE? I bet not ;)

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 06:41 (twenty years ago)

Fuck Revolver.

The only time I had fun there was when I was leaving and managed to coat the walls and floor of the corridor near the loos with vomit.

Never been to Windsor Castle. Is that the one visible from Dandenong road?

BTW, Jim, can you bring the Television Personalities CD if I come?

Sasha (sgh), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 06:53 (twenty years ago)

Sasha: yep the one with the effelants on the roof. I think you can get to it from Chapel via Peel street or Union st?

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 06:56 (twenty years ago)

i soooooooo envy rob! one day i WILL make it to australia i will i will i will ...

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 06:58 (twenty years ago)

Damn ass... Weekends are so much better!

Michael Stuchbery (Mikey Bidness), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 07:08 (twenty years ago)

Yeah! Consign that donkey to hell.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 07:13 (twenty years ago)

Oh man, If I had constant access to Revolver, you better believe I'd used it. Don't just go to some crummy pub!

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 07:17 (twenty years ago)

I like weekends too! Although Thursday is pretty good for me since I'm supposed to go to a couple parties on the weekend...

Trayce - maybe you do know him! He's a pHD student and also does a show on triple-R. Oh yeah, apparently I'm going to the station with him on Saturday morning. Maybe you'll hear me on-air! Although it's mostly a talk show about stuff I know nothing about, so I doubt it...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 07:23 (twenty years ago)

What show? I listen to 3RRR loads on Saturdays.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 07:27 (twenty years ago)

Anyway, I'll take over as the Matt DC-stylee STEERING COMMITTEE and declare that it is now a FAP at the Windsor Castle on Thursday. Is 6pm a good time? I can come anytime, but I don't know when you lot want to come over after work/etc...

Adam - It's called "Run Like You Stole Something". He wrote a book of the same name as well. So much for his anonymity now ;)

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 07:28 (twenty years ago)

Ah yes, the sports show...

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 07:33 (twenty years ago)

yes sasha i will bring it with. it's still shrinkwrapped!

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 07:56 (twenty years ago)

rob, is his surname d0rs3t?

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 07:56 (twenty years ago)

actually i just googled that book and it's not anyone i know. oh well!

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 07:59 (twenty years ago)

This thread reminds me of the Go-Betweens. I hate the Go-Betweens.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 08:03 (twenty years ago)

you hate everything good though.

I miiiiiiiight be able to make it Thursday!

'haitch' (haitch), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

Well again Thursday (tomorrow I assume you mean?) is fine for me but I cant say the same for other peeps... show of hands or suggestions guys? Come on, some of you live 2 doors down from me and Ive not met you yet, I mean FFS :P

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:24 (twenty years ago)

I'm busy that night but I miiiiiiiight be able to pop in for the first half hour maybe.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 01:27 (twenty years ago)

I dunno if I can get there, I ain't got no car and I'm in Richamond.

Michael Stuchbery (Mikey Bidness), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 03:04 (twenty years ago)

Thursday's okay. I work off High Street near Glenferrie Road, so I can catch the tram down and walk a block. Anyone know where exactly I should get off?

I think I've never been into the Windsor castle because I always assumed it was a gay bar.

Michael: You could get the train to Windsor.

Sasha (sgh), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:28 (twenty years ago)

Yeah wot Sash said. Or the tram: many trams up st kilda road stop at st kilda junction where you can hop off, cross the juntion, go down the road a bit and there it is. One of the roads there. Somewhere nr Dandenong.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:31 (twenty years ago)

OK so lemme get a show of hands here - how many can make it tomorrow night? It seems a shame if only a few of us can...

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:37 (twenty years ago)

this week is entirely out for me. i didn't realise it was being organised for so soon!

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:44 (twenty years ago)

Oh arse. REally?

Uh should we do more than one FAP then?

Rob? Paging Rob...

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:47 (twenty years ago)

any day next week is fine with me, including this coming sunday evening.

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:48 (twenty years ago)

Hm Sunday might work for peeps better than Thursday... dammit why is our lot so hard to herd? Yer like cats!

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:53 (twenty years ago)

take him to the place on nicolson street, with all the grills around the bar and everyone looking like they'll shoot the tvs

Queen Gooned out in Fitzroy once upon a kennet government ago, Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:40 (twenty years ago)

Hey wtf is that place?! heh sounds... uhh.. interesting ;)

Queen G, did you live here once of a time and are now in the UK or something? I could never work that out.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 06:44 (twenty years ago)

Pause is a bar not a pub - it hasnt a beer garden but its avery cool Moroccan themed bar. It is in Carlisle st east st kilda which can be reached from getting the chapel st tram right down to near its end on carlisle.

Having said that Im not sure if I will be there or not.. Im of 2 minds and I dunno.. argh sorry Im hopeless.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 17 March 2005 06:19 (twenty years ago)

Also hell yeah, Melburnians are very like Londoners in the "I wont go THAT far" stuff ;)

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 17 March 2005 06:20 (twenty years ago)

Actually fuck, shit no I cant really make it tonite, Ive a friend over later. Sorry Rob :( Apart from sunday are there other days people want to meet up as well?

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 17 March 2005 06:24 (twenty years ago)

OK OK... let's just keep this simple and say that we're having a FAP on Sunday at the Windsor Arms. I know not everyone can come, but that's the reality of FAPs (well, except for us London people who all go to countless FAPs, since we are (a) sad (b) drunks (c) all of the above). Anyway, I'd like to meet you folks and hopefully you can come out for a bit on Sunday. You seem like nice people ;)

Now, what time should we meet up on Sunday? Hopefully this will be easier to figure out.. I'd say 4 or 5, and then I'm happy to loiter around there for anyone who wants to come a little later...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 17 March 2005 06:38 (twenty years ago)

Any time's fine for me. And seriously, I'm happy to meet up any other afternoon too somewhere if you dont get Teh Fear about meeting Only Me ;) (and maybe my bf).

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 17 March 2005 06:40 (twenty years ago)

Nah.. I won't get Teh Fear. If anything, facing a huge bunch of (sorta) strangers for the first time is more intimidating! But I'm a pretty laid-back social fella, so I'm not fussed either way.

And hey folks - please feel free to suggest other cool things going on in the next week or so too...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 17 March 2005 06:43 (twenty years ago)

Its a pity yr only here til the 23rd - Bill Bailey's doing 4 shows next weekend... they may all be sold out already though, I dont know. Comedy Festival is on, so there'd be tons to go see if that floats yr boat. Cruise Chapel st - laff at the nobs - hang out in the Botanical Gardens - see Fed Square and the Gallery, thats nice....

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 17 March 2005 06:45 (twenty years ago)

Sasha - if you feel like meeting up tonight somewhere, I'm game, since I kinda have nothing to do :( But again - I don't want to drag anyone out if they're the only one and would feel odd about it. Anyone else around? Paging the Melbourne Massiv!

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 17 March 2005 06:48 (twenty years ago)

I wandered Chapel a bit today, it was cool. I can now see why so many people have compared Melbourne to my home town Toronto. Chapel (and Brunswick too) are quite similar in style and vibe to Queen St and other areas back home.

I'll be seeing more of Fitzroy tomorrow, and also going to the Botanical Gardens. I cruised around the CBD my first day, which was boring. Went to Fed square last night to see Blow Up, but we got there too late and it was full. Seeing some Kurosawa film next week instead... Where's a good place to go if it's sunny and nice out and I just want to chill and read my book and lie in the sun. Isn't there a beach somewhere? I'm in Australia, after all...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 17 March 2005 06:54 (twenty years ago)

Rob, is that a valid email address?

Sasha (sgh), Thursday, 17 March 2005 06:57 (twenty years ago)

a beach in Melbourne? ha! No, there are beaches but they're not great - St Kilda 'd be the closest one to you but look out for syringes and that kind of crap :/

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 17 March 2005 07:00 (twenty years ago)

just to make it clear for anyone coming to this thread later:

THE SORTA-OFFICIAL ROB-B-IN-MELBOURNE-FAP IS TAKING PLACE ON SUNDAY MARCH 20th AT THE WINDSOR ARMS PUB - 5PM. COME ONE COME ALL! GIVE ROB TIPS ABOUT HOW TO BLEND IN WITH AUSTRALIANS! MOCK HIS FUNNY CANADIAN ACCENT! PROBE HIM FOR GOSSIP ABOUT THE LONDON ILX CREW! TALK MUSIC! DRINK BOUZE!

that should to it.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 17 March 2005 07:01 (twenty years ago)

sasha - yes it is, but i don't check it often. use my first name dot last name at gmail dot com

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 17 March 2005 07:01 (twenty years ago)

Well, I'm going to dinner in Prahran at 7, so I can meet you somewhere at 8:30.

I really hat this part of town though.

Sasha (sgh), Thursday, 17 March 2005 07:09 (twenty years ago)

Sure, 8:30 is cool. Pick a tolerable spot and I'll meet you there. You can email me off-board if you want...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 17 March 2005 07:14 (twenty years ago)

Should we get a mod to alter the title to say FAP SUNDAY AT WINDSOR CASTLE BLAH TIME ?

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 17 March 2005 07:17 (twenty years ago)

(its windsor castle not winsdor arms ;P juss sayin is all, heh)

PS Rob! We totally werw gonna have a choof weren't we? You know, after we catch up sunday youre welcome back to mine for a toke if you'd like...

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 17 March 2005 07:18 (twenty years ago)

= 'Hate', but especially when (as now) I'm hatless.

Sasha (sgh), Thursday, 17 March 2005 07:22 (twenty years ago)

Make it the Windsor Castle then. I'm eager to check it out.

And it's close enough to public transport to go elsewhere.

Sasha (sgh), Thursday, 17 March 2005 07:25 (twenty years ago)

Yeah seriously Sash, the WC (ha!) is a great pub, bit like the Rochester, only a little more done up.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 17 March 2005 07:27 (twenty years ago)

Yeah Tracye, post-pub ganj sounds cool since I assume we won't all be pubbing super-late - it being a Sunday and all...

OK Sasha - I'll meet you there. It'll give me a chance to check out the local Prahran/Windsor "nightlife" on the way there... dunno if you've seen me on any of those 'what you look like' threads, but I'll be in jeans, a plain beige v-neck, and wearing the standard-issue emo black-plastic-frame square glasses...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 17 March 2005 07:33 (twenty years ago)

yeah, who do i have to sleep with around here to change the thread title? that's a good idea..

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 17 March 2005 07:34 (twenty years ago)

That's awful!

The Rochester's already overly done up.

The only fond memory I have of that place was when I threw a pint glass at some indie kid when they had Fanclub there.

Rob - I'll be all in black with some David Koresh style specs.

Sasha (sgh), Thursday, 17 March 2005 07:36 (twenty years ago)

Fanclub blows. I went once to see Tuggers (who were great obv) and it sucked! Damn indiekids.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 17 March 2005 07:39 (twenty years ago)

That might've been the night, I got there just after they played though.

Sasha (sgh), Thursday, 17 March 2005 07:41 (twenty years ago)

where's this Windsor in relation to St Kilda/Prahran then?

kit brash (kit brash), Thursday, 17 March 2005 07:41 (twenty years ago)

here's a link to a review and map:
http://www.melbournepubs.com/venues/800/Windsor-Castle-Hotel.html

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 17 March 2005 07:52 (twenty years ago)

Windsor is the "boho" end of Chapel st.. down near Mortishas, Windsor station, Genki etc.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 17 March 2005 07:58 (twenty years ago)

I can't work out from the wee map if that's "the bit I've never walked anywhere near as far as" or "up the end I totally know!". but I'm sure I'll figure it out on Sunday.

kit brash (kit brash), Thursday, 17 March 2005 08:05 (twenty years ago)

Avoid the posh end! (ie towards toorak rd). Go the other way... towards the crapulance and op shops and souvlaki bars. Then you're right :D

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 17 March 2005 08:10 (twenty years ago)

the bit I know has like second hand bookshops with cats in and comic shops and Greville Records and Revolver and such (I guess most of these are kinda in the middle though)

kit brash (kit brash), Thursday, 17 March 2005 08:20 (twenty years ago)

fucks me if I know what the place looks like - you had to be smashed to want to go in there anyway. just take the tram out, get off across from the exhibition building, get onto the right hand side heading out and go past the nunnery - it's not more than three blocks from there (the street I thought was smith is the one that used to have all the spanish restaurants and shit on it.)
As for a place to go when it's "nice and sunny out" - ha! Fucking melbourne...

Queen Gaslight and Hellfire, Thursday, 17 March 2005 12:28 (twenty years ago)

Kit: thats the right area then - head towards the Astor, then if you go down one of the side streets next to windsor station the pub is somewhere down either Peel or Union street (I think).

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 17 March 2005 22:25 (twenty years ago)

Oh man, they do fondue at this pub! I'm bringing my stomach with me.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 17 March 2005 22:37 (twenty years ago)

Hello Rob! Are you making some sort of stealth bid for ILX Super Wang Champion?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 17 March 2005 22:42 (twenty years ago)

god I WOULD have a birthday the day you're all doing something. As a result I can't get anywhere near the place.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 17 March 2005 23:01 (twenty years ago)

Make it part of yer bday dammit! ;)

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 17 March 2005 23:22 (twenty years ago)

I CAN'T I AM TEH BUSY

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 17 March 2005 23:26 (twenty years ago)

Get one less cranky! ;P

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 18 March 2005 01:07 (twenty years ago)

I CAN'T I AM TEH CANTANKEROUS NEIGHBOUR

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 18 March 2005 01:14 (twenty years ago)

Queen gaslight...

You're not talking about the Tankerville are you?

On par with The Carlton Hotel as the most unpleasant pub in Melbourne.

Sasha (sgh), Friday, 18 March 2005 01:57 (twenty years ago)

that's it!!! Fuck yeah, everyone looks like their mother fucked a chicken parmegana and gave birth over a bunsen burner, and there is nothing of value to flog. It's great benefit is it's open when all the other dives have shut, and opens early the next day - cos when you want goon before noon...

Queen Great Gallon memories, Friday, 18 March 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

tonight I'm going to a pub that does schnitzel and drag shows, apparently. Melbourne rocks!

kit, Saturday, 19 March 2005 06:18 (twenty years ago)

Haha! Is it the Greyhound?

Also, make sure you rock up tomorrow bastards!

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 19 March 2005 07:12 (twenty years ago)

hey there people - i don't know when i'll get online next, so hopefully i'll see a bunch of you tomorrow! fondue, eh? interesting... if it's a good day aim for the garden in the back.

hey sasha - nice to meet you on thurs.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Saturday, 19 March 2005 09:19 (twenty years ago)

oh matt - hi to you too. and i doubt my super-wang status can usurp some other well-travelled and FAPped ilxors...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Saturday, 19 March 2005 09:20 (twenty years ago)

schnitzel=monday-friday, drag shows=saturday-sunday, it turns out. :(

they put up neon signs and stuff over the restaurant ones though!

kit, Saturday, 19 March 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

oh matt - hi to you too. and i doubt my super-wang status can usurp some other well-travelled and FAPped ilxors...

No but I love you nonetheless.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 19 March 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

well that was fun! i got to meet some of you fine folks, enjoy the questionable jukebox at the 'railway' bar, and watch futurama at trayce's place. what could be better? ok, the windsor castle was a yuppie place and there wasn't even any room in the garden, but what the hell...

thanks for coming to meet me! now you need to get thyselves over to london sometime and our ILX UK MASSIV will make you feel right at home...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 21 March 2005 06:36 (twenty years ago)

Yay! I had fun too, twas a good night even with our minor find-a-decent-pub hiccups, heh.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 21 March 2005 06:51 (twenty years ago)
