POPTIMISM 5th May 2005 - Vote-Imism!

We've sorted out the next three dates for Poptimism at the Polar Bear in Soho. The first of them is on the 5th May, which is ALSO (almost certainly) the day of the General Election. So there's our gimmick right away! (Though Steve didn't realise when he picked the date, but our first choice one was taken.)

Special ELECTION NIGHT PARTY from 7 onwards. Downstairs at the Polar Bear has a plasma screen TV next to the DJ booth so we can hopefully see the results come in as we dance (and play appropriate tunes). There will certainly be POP VOTES occurring over the course of the evening too. There may well be free gifts for those good citizens who turn up with a polling card (though if you're planning on coming make sure you vote in the morning).

Best of all, "I was up all night watching the election" is a time-honoured workplace get-out-of-jail free card, it makes you seem civic-minded instead of a drink-addled wastrel. So it means that the 5th is (almost) not a school night!

More details of price, duration etc. to follow (it will probably be £2 like last time, though)

SEE YOU THERE!

Tom (Groke), Saturday, 2 April 2005 09:11 (twenty years ago)

(Obviously if Blair DOESN'T call it for the 5th none of this gimmicky nonsense applies but it'll be a great night anyway)

Tom (Groke), Saturday, 2 April 2005 09:13 (twenty years ago)

He'd better. I'm supposed to be poll-clerking and I can't do the 12th.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 2 April 2005 09:14 (twenty years ago)

there are local elections on the 5th though, so two elections in a fortnight would be menko.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Saturday, 2 April 2005 09:24 (twenty years ago)

You must play lots of political songs! Who wouldn't wish to dance to a night of Billy Bragg, Chumbawumba and the Levellers?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 2 April 2005 09:30 (twenty years ago)

Don't forget Tracy Ullman

Dave B (daveb), Saturday, 2 April 2005 09:49 (twenty years ago)

Mike Batt megamix!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 2 April 2005 09:50 (twenty years ago)

in event of non-election, it will be Pope-timism, all catholic/pontiff related reckids.

"Papal Hold On" by Coldcut/yazz
"Bills, Bills, Bills" Density's Child
Loads of songs by Senser
ect

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Saturday, 2 April 2005 09:56 (twenty years ago)

I GOT ELECTION!

Secretary Of State For Turbonegro (RickyT), Saturday, 2 April 2005 12:25 (twenty years ago)

It's worth a try, I suppose.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Saturday, 2 April 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

The one mandatory record is surely Alice Cooper's 'Elected', but I would also recommend Eric B & Rakim's 'Eric B For President'.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 2 April 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

the mr bean cover version more like ("Elected" i mean)

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Saturday, 2 April 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

just to confirm we will now be going until 2am with full plasma screen coverage (bbc, obv ;)) from 11pm.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 14 April 2005 11:14 (twenty years ago)

when will 'plasma screen' stop being used as a selling point? the quality is shit! will be great fun all the same though. Please play Bikstok Rogsystem etc.

$V£N! (blueski), Thursday, 14 April 2005 11:38 (twenty years ago)

we'll be dancing in my parents' basement in kalamazoo that night, have fun!

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 14 April 2005 11:59 (twenty years ago)

I've thrown my back out!

Plus-Tech Whiz Kid (Disco) (Barima), Thursday, 14 April 2005 13:12 (twenty years ago)

We will laugh the day that Thatcher dies,
Even though we know it's not right,
We will dance and sing all night.

I was blind in 1979, by '82 I had clues,
By 1986 I was mad as hell.

The teachers at school, they took us for fools,
They never taught us what to do,
But Christ we were strong, we knew all along,
We taught ourselves the right from wrong.

And the punk rock kids, and the techno kids,
No, it's not their fault.
And the hip hop boys and heavy metal girls,
No, it's not their fault.

It was love, but Tories don't know what that means,
She was Michelle Cox from the lower stream,
She wore high-heeled shoes while the rest wore flat soles.

And the playground taught her how to be cruel,
I talked politics and she called me a fool,
She wrapped her ankle chain round my left wing heart.

Ding dong, the witch is dead, which old witch?
The wicked witch.
Ding dong, the wicked witch is dead.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 14 April 2005 13:17 (twenty years ago)

we are not playing that until it happens, and then only a little bit of it.

barms, what did you throw your back out of?

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 14 April 2005 14:05 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
This is this Thursday!

Suggestions and requests (not necessarily election themed) are welcome of course.

What hasn't been mentioned thus far on the thread is the Guest DJs. We will be bringing you Club FT star MEG (thats Mrs Carsmile if anyone doesn't know her) and making his Poptimistic debut the one, the only, THE LEX.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 2 May 2005 09:53 (twenty years ago)

Bruce Forsyth's Euro Referendum Record (1976) 'I'm Backing Britain'

suzy (suzy), Monday, 2 May 2005 10:00 (twenty years ago)

That was me, apologies.

Ed (dali), Monday, 2 May 2005 10:01 (twenty years ago)

Apparently it was wilson era post devaluation campaign record.

Ed (dali), Monday, 2 May 2005 10:04 (twenty years ago)

William McClintock Bunbury!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 2 May 2005 12:07 (twenty years ago)

I can't vote but I'm still going to try to make it to this.

Lapdog Shoesnog (kate), Monday, 2 May 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

I will be voting with my feet. Go Javine!

stevem, nyoik, Monday, 2 May 2005 22:44 (twenty years ago)

i wonder if stevem knows he's been voted for!!

parakeet_esparanto (parakeetesparanto), Monday, 2 May 2005 22:55 (twenty years ago)

Remember people to vote before you come out. It will be good practice for all the proper voting on the night.

And make sure you put your names on the Poptimism electoral register on the Freaky Trigger front page.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 11:03 (twenty years ago)

'I Could Never Be President' by Johnnie Taylor

Anything by Screaming Lord Sutch

Anything by Spitting Image

'You're The Man' by Marvin Gaye.

Those are my requests. Very poor really. Not really what we're after.

I am worried that some people will choose to hang around for this instead of going home to vote. Equally, I am worried that some people will get up early to vote so they can hang around to go to this and they will be very tired and possibly irritable and it could end up in a big fight.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 11:37 (twenty years ago)

i'm going to go home at lunchtime to vote and also get my car fixed. so i'm going to be hungry and poor, and may eat people.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 12:56 (twenty years ago)

I have to be at home and indoors when watching the election - shouting obscenities and shaking your fist at the TV is a private activity (unless watching the footer)

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 13:02 (twenty years ago)

hi dere!
so, this is the new and improved 'club FT' for spring 2005 and beyond, right?

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 13:04 (twenty years ago)

well that's one for the public to decide.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 13:18 (twenty years ago)

I'll go if you play "Fuck everybody who voted Tory" by Oi Polloi

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

And make sure you put your names on the Poptimism electoral register on the Freaky Trigger front page.

i can't find this. (although i do have the browser window showing only two lines at a time to avoid work detection so maybe i'm not looking too hard)

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 13:24 (twenty years ago)

Ken, Ken, when will you learn; that was a request from P. Barang, i.e. inherently untrue.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

The Sign Up To Poptimism Mailing List = The Electoral Register.

Its like Club FT but better because you pay for it (and the drinks are much cheaper!!)

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

Yes, it's the promised land of the £2 pint.

Watch this space for news of free gifts.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

I am going home to vote first and, as I have to go to my parents house to pick up my ballot paper, will probably sit around there being a good and dutiful son after being a good and dutiful citizen. I will then be a good and dutiful employee and stay sober for the first time ever at a Club FT, due to horrific deadline situation the next day. Schnii schnaa.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

You don't need your polling card to vote Matt...

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

xpost I wouldn't recommend it.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

£2 pint, £5 bottle of wine w0o+ wo0+

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

In fact, if you asked me for a recommendation, I'd say Don't Try It.

Marcello Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

I will then be a good and dutiful employee and stay sober for the first time ever at a Club FT, due to horrific deadline situation the next day.

i said this once, a few months ago. I ended up having loads of pictures of me taken, drunk, and with black bean stuck in my teeth.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

What's that Thatcher sampling rave tune that has her going "acid party" over again and "a better record than the Labour party have ever had" and so forth?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

Answers within the next couple of hours please for inclusion on the free illegal CD!

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

This would appear to be 'Maggie's Last Party' by VIM. Track 54 on Margaret Thatcher's Great Speeches.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

Soulseek flopped on me anyway. :(

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 08:19 (twenty years ago)

BTW was the poor girl who threw up all over the floor in the corner alright?

Tom (Groke), Friday, 6 May 2005 11:53 (twenty years ago)

oh dear, was there vomiting?

i had a lovely time, shonky decks/cds notwithstanding, well done everyone :)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 6 May 2005 12:55 (twenty years ago)

also, who's got YMOF?

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 6 May 2005 12:56 (twenty years ago)

I think OFFICIAL GUEST DJ ADVICE from now on is to make sure you bring a mix of CD-Rs and real legal CDs; the glorious Ken C method of shoving the lot on two burned discs is a recipe for disaster.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 6 May 2005 12:57 (twenty years ago)

Some of my burnt CDs actually worked!

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 6 May 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

Yeah so did mine but the hit rate seems higher with legit ones.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 6 May 2005 13:03 (twenty years ago)

We had YMOF this morning. He may be somewhere else now.

robster (robster), Friday, 6 May 2005 13:05 (twenty years ago)

I think Murdoch won but we didn't play him because the decks went mental at around that time.

a likely story...

$V£N! (blueski), Friday, 6 May 2005 13:07 (twenty years ago)

the glorious Ken C method of shoving the lot on two burned discs is a recipe for disaster.

hey I did this before Ken, and yes it backfired, but I did have one copy of the Scissor Sisters album as backup...

$V£N! (blueski), Friday, 6 May 2005 13:08 (twenty years ago)

Vomit girl was found a willing taxi driver to escort her home, after having been carried up the stairs, after falling back down the stairs onto the person carrying her.

Alix with an i? (alix), Friday, 6 May 2005 13:23 (twenty years ago)

Yes, I was put up by Robster and Liz, who have been lovely enough to do this two visits running. Check your (royal) mail, you two.

Also I'll repeat my thanks to Meg and Lex for their very different but very top sets.

The worst thing was not just dancing to Marion, but dancing to Marion while telling everyone "Brilliant, this is Menswear". Whichever side of the miniscule difference between them you fall, that's not good.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 6 May 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

I think if decks stop, we should just have a copy of "Ghost Town" to hand to play on repeat until it sorts itself out.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 6 May 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

Oh I don't think Poptimism should be playing other countries National Anthems.

$V£N! (blueski), Friday, 6 May 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

personal highlights: the amazing new Lil Jon/Missy/Ciara track that features them rhyming over Cybotron's 'Clear', '10 Dollar', 'Hollaback Girl', 'Frequency' and managing to temporarily convince YMOF that Tricky's 'Black Steel' was actually the Girls Aloud version (which doesn't exist but should).

$V£N! (blueski), Friday, 6 May 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

I think OFFICIAL GUEST DJ ADVICE from now on is to make sure you bring a mix of CD-Rs and real legal CDs; the glorious Ken C method of shoving the lot on two burned discs is a recipe for disaster.

haha but mine worked perfectly! PLUS you forgot my GRAND BACKUP PLAN of having the Best Of Terrorvision CD with me which basically was frankly all that was needed

ken c (ken c), Saturday, 7 May 2005 11:09 (twenty years ago)

I've just put the Blair CD on. Gary Clail! Yay!

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 7 May 2005 11:13 (twenty years ago)

Haha!
Girl with dragon t-shirt's making some crazy shapes there.

I remember asking Nick Passant if Stevie Trousers had gone home to which he replied "Unless he's been locked in the toilet for the past two hours, yes!"

Props to Lixi for cloakroom duty. And for having kewl earrings.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

the photos make it look like everyone was moving like jerky Gerry Anderson puppets all night. this is completely true.

$V£N! (blueski), Thursday, 12 May 2005 00:27 (twenty years ago)

For some reason all Club FT photos from the Chapel used to look like hedonistic booze madness even when there were only 15 people there, whereas all photos I've seen from thronged sweaty Poptimism so far make it look like a youth club party w/ the kids jiving uncomfortably to Sir Cliff. (Honourable exception THE LEX).

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 12 May 2005 05:44 (twenty years ago)

There's nothing like dancing with a bottle of rosé that loves you.

PUPPETS OF THE HIVEMIND

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 12 May 2005 07:58 (twenty years ago)

You sure about that 90 punters estimate?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 12 May 2005 08:00 (twenty years ago)

God almighty those are some wack photos! It was nothing like that at the time, I swear!

Also: CURSE YOU BLOSSOM HILL.

Lucretia My Reflection (Lucretia My Reflection), Thursday, 12 May 2005 08:00 (twenty years ago)

I look relatively sober from behind. "Yr my besht mate" face not pictured.

robster (robster), Thursday, 12 May 2005 08:08 (twenty years ago)

90 sounds about right actually.

$V£N! (blueski), Thursday, 12 May 2005 08:09 (twenty years ago)

Yeah it was around 115 the first time and 90 the second, 86 of whom seem to have been invisible to cameras.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 12 May 2005 08:10 (twenty years ago)

There are other photos, but those are the good ones.

Most of the 86 were in the corner talking about their livejournal/labouring selflessly behind the decks.

If I'd got my camera out in time, there would be a photo of yourself Pete and Carsmile staring in bemusement at the cable that went nowhere.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 12 May 2005 08:21 (twenty years ago)

86 DJs? I would have paid to hear that!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 12 May 2005 08:22 (twenty years ago)

I'm up for banning photography at Poptimism personally.

$V£N! (blueski), Thursday, 12 May 2005 08:22 (twenty years ago)

Actually that would be a great idea for a club - 90 DJs behind the decks, and one punter out on the floor. Don't know whether you could do it more than the once, though.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 12 May 2005 08:22 (twenty years ago)

Magnus and MarkH both appear to be experiencing extreme shoulder pain in the above photos. I blame the Blossom Hill.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 12 May 2005 08:25 (twenty years ago)

I will abide whatever The Steering Committee decides.

Particularly if I get to be the punter. As I will clearly dance to anything.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 12 May 2005 08:26 (twenty years ago)

Oh my god, that photo!

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 12 May 2005 09:49 (twenty years ago)

You can understand the reasons behind wanting to ban photography from Poptimism (that's yet another reason why I don't go to these things; I do NOT like being photographed and don't want my hideous mush on these boards to confirm everyone's suspicions).

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 12 May 2005 09:51 (twenty years ago)

For some reason all Club FT photos from the Chapel used to look like hedonistic booze madness even when there were only 15 people there, whereas all photos I've seen from thronged sweaty Poptimism so far make it look like a youth club party w/ the kids jiving uncomfortably to Sir Cliff. it's all to do with lighting i think. too much flash.

Mind you hat check not condusive to dancing. And me not DJ-ing (is condusive to dancing).

Come anyway, Anna! I will buy you drinks! (cheap wine! hurrah!)
