TS: London vs Dublin vs Frankfurt

OK, so here's the deal. There's a bank holiday coming up in a few weeks. These are the three cheapest places we can get to from Glasgow with the most convenient travelling times.

Except we don't know which to choose. Reasons I can think of for each:

London: top mentalist drinking action possible. Slim possibility that accommodation may be provided by aforementioned mentalists. I haven't been for ages, and the mister is quite keen.

Dublin: Guinness. Drinking possibility with mentalists I don't know except Lara. That's about it so far. I went once, it was rather meh, but maybe I could be convinced

Frankfurt: It's proper abroad so will feel like a holiday rather than a trip to go drinking with mentalists.

And that's about it. So, what to do. Oh widely-travelled and helpful people of ILX, help me. Choose our holiday!

I'd go for Frankfurt first, then London. For all the reasons you've stated about.

This thread (ttp://ilx.p3r.net/thread.php?msgid=5316736#unread) is making a good case for London at the moment.

I mean this thread...Crystal Palace - If You Didn't Know What It Was, What Would You Guess (Motel of the Mysteries Stylee) That It Had Been?

Dublin is meh, but I do live here, Frankfurt is meant to be boring, but is in Germany, while London has loads of fun people and pubs and stuff.

DV (dirtyvicar), Monday, 4 April 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

It will only be for three days max, so Frankfurt must have at least two good restaurants, a couple of things to see or do, and, er, beer to keep me occupied. I can treat it as a reconnaissance mission should Scotland qualify for the World Cup (*clutches at straws*).

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 4 April 2005 22:26 (twenty years ago)

frankfurt is the most unpleasant of the big german cities. doesnt have much of a nightlife either. arent there any cheap flights to berlin or cologne

fe zaffe (fezaffe), Monday, 4 April 2005 23:13 (twenty years ago)

Frankfurt is the cheapest. We could get to Cologne, I guess, if that were a better option.

(our other option is Gothenburg, but this has probably been discounted as we have a fear of Scandinavian drink prices)

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 4 April 2005 23:18 (twenty years ago)

Frankfurt has lots of nice restaurants, but relatively little to see or do.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 13:09 (twenty years ago)

I think Cologne is a much better option than Frankfurt, Ailsa.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

You answer must not be Dublin as I'm in Manchester with Madchen that weekend!

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

if you have a fear of scandanavian drinks prices then Dublin's drink prices wont do much to assuage that fear.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

Dublin without Lara = not properly Dublin, innit. We had thought about Manchester, due to cheapness of the Megabus, but decided that wasn't a terribly exciting place to go on a weekend break - saying that, neither is Frankfurt now. This is not to say that Madchen and Lara won't have an exciting time in Manchester, obviously.

Nobody wants me to go to London :( We will probably end up in a B&B in Blackpool if I dither any more.

(xpost, is Dublin really that bad for drink prices?)

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

Dublin is super expensive. Not worse than London West End but it has no cheap alternatives.

I've always fancied a dirty weekend in Blackpool...

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

I liked Blackpool when I was there, for a non-dirty weekend. Though I avoided anything that looked like a pub with organised fun, hen/stag nights, etc which took away most of the Blackpool experience, I guess. The Pleasure Beach was fun though, and the pubs I ventured into were cheap. And we saw the Scottish bloke who had the pub in Hollyoaks.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 20:33 (twenty years ago)

Lara, how are you?

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

you could go to these places cheaply from prestwick ailsa (i'm sure you know this)

Girona (a hop from barcelona and a lovely city in itself)
Milan
Paree
Pisa (a skip from Florence)
Rome

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

Pisa has a very good train link from the airport to florence, about 40 minutes and cheap.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 20:42 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, but the timings and the costs are not as cheap over the Mayday bank holiday weekend.

(barcelona was our original plan, but scuppered due to flight times and much higher costs than everywhere else)

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

amsterdam on easyjet?

ok i'll shut up ;)

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 20:47 (twenty years ago)

Ooh, I forgot about them. Is Belfast nice, someone, that's quite cheap?
