rude awakening

the weirdest thing just happened, there was just a fight or something on the street in front of my house. i was sleeping on the futon in the living room. and i hear all this yelling and stuff. and i thot it was the tv or something but i woke up. and it's these two dudes outside yelling at each other from like 50 feet awaay, "nigga" this and "fuck you" that. and they start scrappin' and like 4 more people show up out of nowhere on the sidewalk, and i called the cops. one of the fighting dudes throws the other fighting dude on the hood of this parked silver car. as i'm going downstairs to get a better look, these two dudes (i think one of them was in the fight but i don't know for sure) jump in a pathfinder and take off (i couldn't get a good angle on the license plate). and then the cops show up, late. the cops huddle around for a few minutes, ask someone down the street a question, then take off: "we've got a guy with a gun on the corner."

your tales of mild mayhem, even milder police response, and indifferent neighbors in an otherwise-utopian block here.

where is bill cosby when we need him?

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 02:22 (twenty years ago)

yeah, I found out that a friend of mine got mugged at gun point on my street in Jersey City. This is what someone living in a basement apartment with no bars on the window and only a dead bolt on the door wants to hear.

Well said.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 02:53 (twenty years ago)

So have the guys come back? Are they evacuating buildings?

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 02:55 (twenty years ago)

Haha. There was a homeless man and a puddle of blood on my doorstep the other night. Since the blood wasn't coming out of the homeless man, we decided to do nothing. He was gone in the morning. hurrah for urban apathy.

mouse (mouse), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 02:55 (twenty years ago)

no they did not come back but one of my roommates is home, oblivious (i think) to the mild chaos that recently ensued.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 03:00 (twenty years ago)

You should've told the police to pull over the black guys in the SUV. Unless these were white boys yelling "nigga," in which case, the cops should pull them over and then shoot them.

Tyrone Willie Demetrius DeAndre DeShawn (deangulberry), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 03:01 (twenty years ago)

i got mugged by two dudes on my doorstep one time, and then my landlady tried to tell me it was our fault, because she lived in that building for twenty years and, "couldn't see how something like that could happen." yeah, i guess the chinese restaurant doubling as a brothel and drug dealers on the corner were also my fault.

tehresa (tehresa), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 03:02 (twenty years ago)

You were dressed like you wanted drug dealers and hookers to hang out near you.

Tyrone Willie Demetrius DeAndre DeShawn (deangulberry), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 03:04 (twenty years ago)

yes, it must have been that broke student look that said, "what this area really needs is some rental pussy and crack!"

tehresa (tehresa), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 03:06 (twenty years ago)

we called the cops a few times that year because of bitches getting smacked up on the street in front of our place.

tehresa (tehresa), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 03:08 (twenty years ago)

we woke up to someone in the street yelling FIRE at about 5AM a few weeks ago. there was a van on fire a few feet from our building. very strange. felt like living in a war zone seeing that burnt out carcass for the next couple of days. looking inside of it the next day was very interesting. there were all these racks of what appeared to be battery cells or something. i'm guessing that's where the trouble started

I don't tell the police anything except "yes, sir."

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 03:42 (twenty years ago)

oh, I meant to link to the main post in that thread. that was confusing. never mind.

your tales of mild mayhem, even milder police response, and indifferent neighbors in an otherwise-utopian block here.

i was thinking of starting a thread on this. about a week and a half ago a cab driver got stabbed at the intersection where i live. they still haven't caught the guy.

the night it happened, i was out walking around, and as i was heading back toward my building, i saw the cab stalled in the middle of the street, with an ambulance, a cop car or two, and a big crowd of onlookers hovering around. before even finding out what happened, i ran the hell home and locked the door. i had a feeling it was something ugly.

jody the country girl doll (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 04:15 (twenty years ago)

When I came home today, there were a couple of homeless dudes chillin' by my door. Usually they chill across the street on the loading dock.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 04:19 (twenty years ago)

By "chillin'" I should clarify that I mean bundling up in blankets and getting ready for bed.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 04:19 (twenty years ago)

I was in Central Park with a baby stroller last Wednesday about three hours after that woman in Central Park with a baby stroller got mugged by the guy who pointed his gun at the baby (no class!). Of course, there were also about 1,200 other people in Central Park with baby strollers that day, so I guess my odds of having anyone point a gun at our baby were still pretty low. Still! I never read if they caught that guy. Despite my longstanding opposition to capital punishment, I am suddenly in favor of hanging for people who point guns at babies.

hstencil ain't a snitch

I thought Giuliani cleaned up New York, everything's shiny and crime-free, no danger except from the cops, etc..

mitch dub (ano ano), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 05:05 (twenty years ago)

My area is pretty quiet - jewish families and the like - but once this crazyass drunk aboriginal woman who lives across the road came out into the street late at night and started screeching "call the cops fucker!" over and over and over like a banshee, and I could hear another guy yelling at her. Anyway the cops showed, told them off, did nothing and left again. A while later more hubbub started up, but this time it was all these guys from the Rabbinical college up the street, they GANGED UP on these fighting dudes! I could hear all this Yiddish (?) and accusations and "fuck off, wheres an arab when I need one" from someone else and I thought "oh dear" and then the cops came back, some scuffling and shouting ensued and then everyone went back to bed, the end.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 05:24 (twenty years ago)

hahaha, dude, i called 911!

and 911 operators ain't cops, they just wage slaves like the rest of us.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 05:37 (twenty years ago)

I was once chased up Amsterdam Ave. I called the cops on my cell phone and told them that I had just passed 92nd St. and could they please do something. The 911 operator replied that I would have to have a stable location for them to send a car. I asked if they might meet me, say, at 96th. That wasn't good enough. I had to stop running and hang out somewhere to wait for them. I finally found a restaurant that was closed but still had people cleaning up in it and ducked in there. The cops never came. Assholes.

Recently some kids had set fire to a car at the side of our house, the car exploded at some point and there were fire trucks blazing their sirens away and all sorts of chaos.

This according to my house mate, apparently I slept through the whole thing.
