What can I say? I love a good pah.

This is the Thread Where I Say pt 29: 'Til the handle comes off!

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 14 April 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

I need to start the thread with this particular gif

http://www.insaniteesonline.com/images/South%20Park/stan%20fart.gif

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Thursday, 14 April 2005 16:06 (twenty years ago)

"Need" is a pretty strong word.

happy fun ball (kenan), Thursday, 14 April 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

It's a pretty strong gif.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 14 April 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

I have butt on the mind, yo.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Thursday, 14 April 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

New "I've never posted on one of threads before!?!?!?! What happens in here??!?!?! I don't understand what this is about!?!?!" posts now.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 14 April 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

Luna, you have hit upon one of my dreams. I want to own a bar/bookstore out in West Texas. With a goat farm on the side. This is my retirement plan.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Thursday, 14 April 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

Everyone tells me that there's no point in owning a bookstore anymore because of Bookstar, Barnes & Noble and Brentano's - but you know, if there were more small bookstores around, I'd frequent them. I'd much rather give my money to a person instead of a chain.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 14 April 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

A pie bookstore, now this sounds worthy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 14 April 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

A small little bookstore can still do okay, I think. I knew a few people who run them here.

Huk-L, Thursday, 14 April 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

No it doesn't, it sounds dumb. People would get pie on the books.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 14 April 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

And then people would lick the pie off the books and you couldn't sell them.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Thursday, 14 April 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

Right!

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 14 April 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

Luna -- you absolutely should open a bookstore! LA blows for bookstores! Worst city for bookshopping of any of the dozen cities in which I've lived! Just keep a front-line of some weird hipster pulp (or another niche-market) and you'll make a killing.

Remy (x Jeremy), Thursday, 14 April 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

Also... employ me. I luuuurve weird hipster pulp.

Remy (x Jeremy), Thursday, 14 April 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

Deal!

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 14 April 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

http://barros.rusf.ru/sfmags/docsavage/covers/docsavage193303.jpg

Remy (x Jeremy), Thursday, 14 April 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

Is Book Soup still open?

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 14 April 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

What is this distress over my pie bookstore idea -- it's conceptual, therefore it will attract venture capital.

Remy needs to be the dude in Luna's bookstore who wanders around, sees what other people are reading and launches into random monologues.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 14 April 2005 17:24 (twenty years ago)

Yes, it is, Michael.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 14 April 2005 17:24 (twenty years ago)

But that would still be interesting, right?

I think you could do fine owning your own bookstore if you found a good location. Every once in a while, I dream about running a small business, but I know that at best I'd break even. Also, I'm so lazy and it would be really hard work.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 14 April 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

I'm not opening a pie bookstore. My bookstore will occasionally have candy, or cookies or rice krispie treats or king cake (or hurricanes if it's Mardi Gras and you're over 21), but there will not be pie. NO PIE.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 14 April 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

And I love pie! But I don't think it goes well with books.

Besides, I hate to share.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 14 April 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

I think you should hire me for all your personal needs. You know... um, like for stuff.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Thursday, 14 April 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

the small little towns in west texas have no big stores, of any kind. The only competition there would be online stores.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Thursday, 14 April 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

You're hired! And a 15% discount for all ILXers.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 14 April 2005 17:32 (twenty years ago)

You must carry the pat teh bunny book.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Thursday, 14 April 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

goes without saying.

happy fun ball (kenan), Thursday, 14 April 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

15% discount? That's like an invitation to shoplift. I want 25% discount or I'm coming in wearing sweatpants.

Huk-L, Thursday, 14 April 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

You must have a store pet.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Thursday, 14 April 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

Yep. This one little bookstore in Richmond had kittens for a while. It was a pretty good incentive to go inside seeing them sunning themselves in the window.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 14 April 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

I think the store pet should be something exotic. A Bengal tiger, maybe. An elephant.

happy fun ball (kenan), Thursday, 14 April 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

Luna's got two pit bulls. There will be no robberies. Unless the doggies decide they want to take a nap. Or like, hide.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Thursday, 14 April 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

I want to go to the beach. I need sun.

happy fun ball (kenan), Thursday, 14 April 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

Stopped into a church
I passed along the way
WELL I GOT DOWN ON MY KNEES

etc.

happy fun ball (kenan), Thursday, 14 April 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

And I said, "Oy vey."

Er, wait.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 14 April 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

just to tie in jeanne's first post w/the bookstore talk:
http://www.wnyc.org/studio360/images/critics/Everybody_poops.jpg

()ops (()()ps), Thursday, 14 April 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

Yes, 15%. Y'all are my friends, but I need to make money, too, you know.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 14 April 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

What will you name your bookstore?

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Thursday, 14 April 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

I haven't figured that part out yet.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 14 April 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

DA BIZZOOK NIZZOOK

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 14 April 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

No one over the age of 35 would ever come in.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 14 April 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

Book Ends - then you could work that pic of your ass into the logo!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 14 April 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

There will be NO BUSINESS WITH MY ASS.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 14 April 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

:(

happy fun ball (kenan), Thursday, 14 April 2005 20:13 (twenty years ago)

Okay. Can anyone think of anything non-ass-related that Luna could do to represent the double-o in the shop sign...?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 14 April 2005 20:16 (twenty years ago)

No boobs!

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 14 April 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

If it'll help, I'll have a special deal for ILXers - if you spend $250 or more in my shop, I will take you in the back room and moon you.

Howzat?

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 14 April 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

Isn't there a new show with P4M 4nders0n about a bookstore and it's called Stack3d?

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Thursday, 14 April 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

There is, sadly.

happy fun ball (kenan), Thursday, 14 April 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

why are you going to Space city? Damn July's a bad time to be there. . .

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 13:48 (twenty years ago)

re houston, i dunno if there is or not.
re donuts, i look like i like them and i do.
going to reserach a story, sam.
it's going to be mental hot, isn't it?

stelf0xxxx, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

You might luck out. The ten-day forecast has highs in the upper 80's. Mild for Houston.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

but is that for right now Kenan? It's still May!

July and August are the worst months in TX and Houston's one of the worst cities for humidity and heat. How long will you be there?

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

I'm wondering what exactly it is about me that makes me look like I don't like donuts...

Huk-L, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

looks like i'll be there for a week or so - it's work so i can't complain too much even if it's horrible. i just wanted to see how bad it's likely to be and, yeah, you've confirmed my worst suspicions!

stelf0xxx, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

but is that for right now Kenan? It's still May!

oh, right. Sorry. Yeah, dude, expect high 90s every day. Bring a towel.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

I'm wondering what exactly it is about me that makes me look like I don't like donuts...

Are you skinny with nice teeth and a good complexion?

slightly more subdued (kenan), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

is it like sunny hot, or just shitty hot?

stelfox, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

Huk, I wouldn't take it personally. People assume [read: know] that I like donuts! :-(

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 14:09 (twenty years ago)

is it like sunny hot, or just shitty hot?

Is there a good kind of 100 degrees?

slightly more subdued (kenan), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)

I'm sorta on the slim side, but that's mostly because of cigarettes and self-loathing rather than nutrition and fitness.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

you've confirmed my worst suspicions!

Yeah, you ain't seen nothing 'till you've been there. Sorry to go on and on about it, but... Jesus. You know that saying that there's no bad weather, just bad clothing choices? Turns out, there is bad weather.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 14:13 (twenty years ago)

oh well, i got to go.
no choice in the matter.
not going to grumble.
it'll be nice to go there anyway.

stelf0xxx, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

Dan Rather summed up Houston weather when he said walking outdoors was like walking into a hot, wet washcloth. (or something like that)

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)

Well, you'll always have the shade from the grey cloud over your head.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)

I want to see Austin some day.

It's gorgeous in Chicago right this second. I just opened the front door and stood there, as though that looks any better than me just leaving work altogether and walking by the water. I could probably get away with it. But I'll be good.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 14:20 (twenty years ago)

come one, come all. I love showing people around TX. It's probably pretty nice out here as it's still early but I'm lazy as all get out and well sit here on the puter till I have to get dressed for my interview.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 14:22 (twenty years ago)

thanks everyone - i was hoping people would say "oh you must do A, try to eat in B, check out C..."
now i think i'm probably just going to sweat a lot!

stelf0xxxx, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 14:22 (twenty years ago)

joking apart, anything i should do?
most of the time i'm gonna be chasing down rappers, but i'm sure i'll get some free time.
i want some good barbecuse while i'm there especially.

stelf0xxxx, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

Oh, no kidding, Sarah. This is the best of all possible weather, I think. Sunny and in the mid-60's with a light lake breeze. Heaven. And it's going to stay like this for a while. Last summer, it stayed like this for four months!

slightly more subdued (kenan), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

"oh you must do A, try to eat in B, check out C..."

Oh, there's that, too! It's not like Houston is a complete hole. It's a great city to go restaurant-ing in, actually. Lots of good ethnic food, none of it verry expensive.

and you'll want to check out the Rothko Chapel and the Menil Collection, but everyone says that. And that Water Wall in front of Transco Tower. That's one of my favorite spots. And the Campus at Rice is totally lovely.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

http://www.photohome.com/pictures/texas-pictures/houston/transco-tower-1a.jpg

slightly more subdued (kenan), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

I fucking love the Rothko Chapel. . . also see the Orange Show.

eating. . .well I was a veggie while I lived there so I couldn't recommend you some bbq. Ask the rappers. (are you going to talk to Mike Jones and Chamillionaire???) Definitely good Asian food. Try Mai's for Vietnamese. They're also one of the few places open all hours so are good for seeing the rockers and rollers late at night. There's a Continental Club downtown which is just a copy of Austin's but hey you're going to be in Houston so take what you can get.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

sam, i don't want to talk too much about the piece here, but i'll happily tell you everything you want to know off-list. can i email you through the address you're signed in with?

stelf0xxxx, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

yes, please. :)

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

O M F G!! The sr art director just got A HUGE BASKET OF GIANT DECORATED COOKIES SHAPED LIKE BEARS. ONE HAS SUNGLASSES ON.

And. He's. Not. Sharing. Then again, neither would I.

Damnit, the bears are looking right at me. Argh, this stupid place.

Je4nne ƒur¥ (Je4nne Fury), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

thanks people - i'm actually pretty excited about going coz i've always wanted to go to texas and nver made it. heat, schmeat... it'll be fun, i think.

stelf0xxxx, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

Jeanne, are you able to create some sort of diversion whilst you grab & then snaffle said bears?

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 14:47 (twenty years ago)

thanks people - i'm actually pretty excited about going coz i've always wanted to go to texas and nver made it. heat, schmeat... it'll be fun, i think. right, i just sent you a mail sam, just to test that it works. i'll send you a proper one later when i'm not supposed to be doing my job!

stelf0xxxx, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 14:47 (twenty years ago)

Pink, office ettiquite dictates that if you steal food and you are caught, you are tortured with angry bees. I am no sleuth. Plus, I'd have crumbs all over my face. I'll just sit here and look at the bears. Pretty bears.

Je4nne ƒur¥ (Je4nne Fury), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

I have only ever been to Denton, TX. It looked like the rest of America. I went to Six Flags and a punk show with my friend Trey.

I really wanted to go to Rice, but I didn't get accepted.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

Pink, office ettiquite dictates that if you steal food and you are caught, you are tortured with angry bees. I am no sleuth. Plus, I'd have crumbs all over my face. I'll just sit here and look at the bears. Pretty bears.
Why do I feel like I've just been told off? :-(

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

Denton, pbbt.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

I really wanted to go to Rice, but I didn't get accepted.

Me either. :( It's pretty much an ivy league school, never mind that it's in Houston.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

I am going to Tennessee this weekend for Memorial Day, and I was really excited about it for months, but now I'm waning. I think it has to do with the fact one of my friends keeps wavering and that leaves me with the prospect of a 7 hour drive with a 24-year-old whose main taste in music is Anime pop stuff and musicals. Help me. I am going to swap all her CDs with Bikini Kill and Anal Cunt just for shock value.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

Right after school I worked at a company founded and run by a bunch of Rice grads. cool people. A large reason I got the job was b/c of my major at UT and my senior thesis. I was in the Plan II Honors program at UT which is structured like an Ivy League education but in Austin and far far cheaper than Rice.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

Nick, I'm glad you didn't get in to Rice. :-D

I got into every school I applied to, but I didn't try for anything I didn't think I could get. I have such fabulously low standards sometimes.

Jocelyn, Jesus Christ Superstar isn't too bad.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

Pink, that was my professional office voice. I assure you, I was not telling you off. ;)

Je4nne ƒur¥ (Je4nne Fury), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

I applied to a bunch of Ivy League schools because my dad thought I should. I didn't get in to any of them. I was accepted by William & Mary, NYU, and Emory College. I didn't want to live in Georgia, and my parents didn't want me in NYC (though my sister ended up going to college there) so I ended up at W&M.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 15:15 (twenty years ago)

I almost went to Bard but in the end it just seemed too far away and scary.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

Now I want a cookie bear. Or just a cookie.

Anyway, I need to start part 31 - titles, please?

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

Y'know what bugs me?
Women who wear shoes with really tiny heels and then they take little tiny steps because their footwear is so unfeasible. Clip clip clip clip clip clip clip clip clip clip clip clip clip clip clip clip clip clip clip clip clip clip clip clip clip. SHUT UP!

Huk-L, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

I need to start part 31

This shit is bananas! B-A-N-A-N-A-S

slightly more subdued (kenan), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

NB: I would hate men who wear shoes like that too.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

I like it when my boss wears sandals because I can hear her coming - FLIP FLOP FLIP FLOP FLIP FLOP!

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

i don't hate it - i admire and respect women for wearing stuff that's totally impractical but looks hot. heels are great.

stelf0xxxx, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

This person is not hot, though. Now, I'm not hottist--some of my best friends are ugly--but I think that people who aren't hot should be put on an island somewhere.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

This is the Thread Where I Say Pt 31: This shit is bananas! B-A-N-A-N-A-S

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

I second the bananas title.

I have too much work to do today. I keep getting approached by coworkers with the question Are you busy? which really means I have a huge project I need you to work on....
