Rice Vs Noodles

I've used the search function and I cannot find an answer to thy question. As an anglo male I prefer rice, mainly because I prefer it to the texture of noodles. However I encourage ILX to try and convince me!

i really enjoy a good, broad rice noodle.

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 15 April 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

It depends on what the kind of rice and what the noodles are and whether I'm in the mood for either. Otherwise I can't choose.

Just noodles? Or are we talking pasta in general? I remember a bit of eh, tension on the Lasagne/Shepherds Pie thread when someone lumped all pasta together under the noodles. It made me sick to the stomach. SICK.

Rumpie, Friday, 15 April 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

ten months pass...
rice, definitely. it's practically* all i've eaten this week.

*but not "literally"

the bitchy guy in the pince-nez from the old films (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 24 February 2006 02:28 (twenty years ago)

i just bought rice noodles today! but have not eaten them yet. nor any rice. wait, wait, i ate rice cakes earlier. so i eat rice *every day* omg. I enjoy the texture of both but the ingredients of one.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Friday, 24 February 2006 02:34 (twenty years ago)

rice is life!!!!

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 24 February 2006 02:35 (twenty years ago)

go rice owls!!

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Friday, 24 February 2006 02:36 (twenty years ago)

ah, but here's something:
cheese and rice - I tend not to think cheese can go on rice, yet it can go on pasta (noodles). And it can go on the more pasta-like of rice noodles. So lately I've been making things that usually go on pasta, but putting them on top of rice (b/c I ran out of rice pasta), and then putting on paramesan cheese. It's good! But still feels a bit wrong. Food is a funny thing.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Friday, 24 February 2006 02:41 (twenty years ago)

what about COUSCOUS?? (which i've still never had)

oops (Oops), Friday, 24 February 2006 02:43 (twenty years ago)

couscous is good.

the bitchy guy in the pince-nez from the old films (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 24 February 2006 02:45 (twenty years ago)

couscous is pasta, so it falls in the "noodles" camp.

the bitchy guy in the pince-nez from the old films (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 24 February 2006 02:49 (twenty years ago)

you imperialist!

oops (Oops), Friday, 24 February 2006 02:54 (twenty years ago)

The only time I eat noodles is when I have become tired of eating rice.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Friday, 24 February 2006 03:03 (twenty years ago)

handshaven noodles. mmmm yum.

lyra (lyra), Friday, 24 February 2006 03:08 (twenty years ago)

the bitchy guy in the pince-nez from the old films (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 24 February 2006 03:10 (twenty years ago)

If beans, then rice. If not-beans, then noodles.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 24 February 2006 03:10 (twenty years ago)

There was mention of ORZO to me the other day. Which is also pasta masquerading as rice, as far as I can tell.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Friday, 24 February 2006 03:17 (twenty years ago)

all pales in the face of potatos masquerading as pasta ie gnocchi

oops (Oops), Friday, 24 February 2006 03:19 (twenty years ago)

Man, I shoulda remembered potatoes, considering I just ate a bunch of them.

If beans, then rice. If broccoli, then potatoes. If neither beans nor potatoes, then noodes.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 24 February 2006 03:21 (twenty years ago)

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 24 February 2006 03:27 (twenty years ago)

haha - "Knowledge Nation"

Rice makes way better pudding than noodles, I know that much.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Friday, 24 February 2006 03:34 (twenty years ago)

yes but it's hard to slurp rice.

oops (Oops), Friday, 24 February 2006 03:36 (twenty years ago)

but not rice noodles!
this is what i mean about the one-ness of rice.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Friday, 24 February 2006 03:38 (twenty years ago)

> Rice makes way better pudding than noodles, I know that much.

I KNOW you didn't just say that about my mama's kugel!

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 24 February 2006 03:39 (twenty years ago)

omg, kugel is made of noodles! Crazy, but I have never knowingly had kugel.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Friday, 24 February 2006 03:42 (twenty years ago)

noodle kugel is made of noodles. potato kugel is... not!

the bitchy guy in the pince-nez from the old films (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 24 February 2006 03:43 (twenty years ago)

bla bla kugel diagram

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 24 February 2006 03:45 (twenty years ago)

oh damn rice noodles duh. so then there's no battle cause Rice CONTAINS noodles! I think we need another diagram.

oops (Oops), Friday, 24 February 2006 03:47 (twenty years ago)

but wait Noodles as a category also CONTAINS rice! i think i need to lie down.

oops (Oops), Friday, 24 February 2006 03:48 (twenty years ago)

one grain to rule them all.
(haha, sorry. so. very. sorry.)

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Friday, 24 February 2006 03:49 (twenty years ago)

how can you unknowingly eat kugel?

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Friday, 24 February 2006 03:50 (twenty years ago)

Didn't say 'eat.' Said 'had.'

Oh, gross.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 24 February 2006 03:51 (twenty years ago)

what? how can the Noodles category contain rice? someone is wrong.
xpost

maybe i ate kugel and didn't know what it was called? you know, at someone's house or a party, something. it's possible.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Friday, 24 February 2006 03:53 (twenty years ago)

iow "rice" is a type of noodle. Noodle can bend Rice to its will.

oops (Oops), Friday, 24 February 2006 04:00 (twenty years ago)

cheese goes nice on top of risotto

mmm cheese (fandango), Friday, 24 February 2006 21:18 (twenty years ago)

risotto is rice masquerading as pasta masquerading as rice. It's a seriously complex food.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Friday, 24 February 2006 23:19 (twenty years ago)

There was mention of ORZO to me the other day

Sure, speak of me in the passive tense.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 24 February 2006 23:37 (twenty years ago)

hahahaha.
The other day, I was chatting with jaymc and he was about to eat some orzo, and I asked, "is that cheese?" and he enlightened me. "No, it's like pasta!" he said (enthusiastic exclamation probably mine). Now I'm dropping ORZO left and right it has changed my life.
OKAY?

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Saturday, 25 February 2006 01:14 (twenty years ago)

i had risotto for dinner!

the bitchy guy in the pince-nez from the old films (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 25 February 2006 01:17 (twenty years ago)

Did you make it or did you eat at a restaurant? Because I hear it's difficult to get right. I really need to try it at an Italian restaurant, I think, soon, esp now, what with all this rice/pasta talk.

(I had rice pasta for dinner! with parm cheese on it!)

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Saturday, 25 February 2006 01:21 (twenty years ago)

Risotto is super easy to make! I think it's a big myth by restaurants to say that it's hard to cook. It's not.

lyra (lyra), Saturday, 25 February 2006 03:23 (twenty years ago)

i ate it at a restaurant, but i've made it before and it came out really well.

the bitchy guy in the pince-nez from the old films (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 25 February 2006 03:36 (twenty years ago)

nah, it's not hard to make... you just have to keep an eye on it.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Saturday, 25 February 2006 08:10 (twenty years ago)

i ate it at a restaurant, but i've made it before and it came out really well.

it would rule if this post were about rice, rather than risotto

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 25 February 2006 08:10 (twenty years ago)

you know, i've always grown up with a rice cooker. and i had no idea that people out there made rice by using a pot of boiling water. i suggest you all go out and get one. like this hello kitty rice cooker:

ken c (ken c), Saturday, 25 February 2006 11:07 (twenty years ago)

Because I hear it's difficult to get right.

It's kinda hard to get wrong if you follow a very straightforward recipe, really. You just keep adding stock and stirring till it's ready. Vwala!

Markelby (Mark C), Saturday, 25 February 2006 19:57 (twenty years ago)

I am going to try it! I'm very good at following recipes. Kitchen Science!

Rice cookers: I have wanted one for SO LONG. But I've since perfected the pot method. And I really only eat brown basmati rice, which is perhaps better done in a pot (?)

I'm making CORNBREAD (in muffin shape) right now! The house smells like AWESOME. And I'm going to make blueberry sauce for them.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Saturday, 25 February 2006 20:20 (twenty years ago)

Mmmm cornbread muffins.
I just got back from the grocery store with arboro rice, but I neglected to pick up some stock. ack!

lyra (lyra), Sunday, 26 February 2006 04:36 (twenty years ago)

i ate two bowls of drained and fried ramen noodles tonight. FANTAS

five years pass...

Is it possible for regular long grain white rice to be so shitty that it's impossible to cook well? I have all this Mormon cannery food storage rice c/o my mom – Mormons are not well known for their discriminating palates. I keep fucking up my rice (stovetop or rice cooker – in fact I got the rice cooker to see if I could curb this problem). It either turns out gloppy or crunchy in the middle or both. Yuck! I have 2 ideas about this:

1. The Mormon rice is too shitty to cook well (ego-saving hypothesis – counter-evidence is that I can cook basmati & short grain sticky rice just fine)
2. I have lost my rice mojo, shit!

free inappropriate education (Abbbottt), Tuesday, 21 June 2011 00:19 (fourteen years ago)

probably shitty rice! I have seen some shitty rice in my life time
