'Sin City' is out on June 1. I am seeing it tonight. Cannes should not be showing it. Not that I give a fuck, it's all just hype anyway.

N_RQ, Tuesday, 19 April 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

dont be so indie

fe zaffe (fezaffe), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

Michael HANEKE CACHÉ 1h57

this and the moll excite me, but i was already excited. it's funny that they are showing bbc2's 'the power of nightmares'. it micturates all over 'fahrenheit 911' which, erm, won last year, unbelievably.

N_RQ, Tuesday, 19 April 2005 13:31 (twenty years ago)

I thought Cannes didn't compete films that have already opened... or is that just when films have opened internationally? or am I completely pulling rules from my brain that actually have no basis in fact?

Eric von H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 13:36 (twenty years ago)

it's complex but i think it's about french openings. many of the films come out in france immediately after the fest. otoh 'blow up' and 'if' won there a while after their uk premieres.

N_Rq, Tuesday, 19 April 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

Also, All That Jazz won in 1980, so I see that it's all pretty sketchy.

Eric von H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 13:48 (twenty years ago)

i think my brother-in-law will be there with the lodge kerrigan movie he edited, *KEANE*, but i don't think it's in any competition or anything. I still haven't seen it.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 14:20 (twenty years ago)

'Keane In Flames'

N_RQ, Tuesday, 19 April 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

i don't think he has ever gone to cannes with a movie. i could be wrong. it must be kind of exciting. he edited bully, ken park, last days of disco, and other stuff. he is a very cool dude.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

yeah, it's supposed to be mad fun. i was just wondering if the film was 'based on the band of the same name'.

N_RQ, Tuesday, 19 April 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

I would pay good money to see Keane In Flames.

(Slade in Flame is a fantatstic movie btw).

European Samuel Glickstein (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

that always have such a crappy website, is there somewhere that actuallt tells you something ABOUT the films in competition?

I'm excited about the Haneke most of all - what's it about? is the von Trier the next part of the Dogville trilogy or is that "on hold"?

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 21:16 (twenty years ago)

Stop liking Michael Haneke!

European Samuel Glickstein (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

ok, it is part 2 of the trilogy.

xp

what's not to like? have you seen "code Unknown"? - film of the decade!

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 21:19 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it's the next installment in the Dogville trilogy, and apparently it picks up where the first one left off, so I can't really figure out how Lauren Bacall and Chloe Sevigny and all are going to be used in this one (SPOLIER) unless they just lie there on the soundstage playing dead for the entire film.

Eric von H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 21:21 (twenty years ago)

have you seen "code Unknown"?

Yes, I hated it!

same initials (initials), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 22:12 (twenty years ago)

"the best of times" was the name of another taiwanese movie from about, uh, 10 years ago or something? but not one by HHH.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 22:16 (twenty years ago)

where can I learn more about the Power of NIghtmares? shall I acquire this from the interweb?

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 22:23 (twenty years ago)

Seijun SUZUKI OPERETTA TANUKIGOTEN (Princess Raccoon)
KIM Jee-woon DAL KOM HAN IN-SAENG (A Bittersweet Life)
Johnny TO ELECTION
Frank MILLER, Robert RODRIGUEZ SIN CITY
Jim JARMUSCH BROKEN FLOWERS

Not a huge To fan but the Election poster looks cool, and I'll never get sick of triad movies. Am looking forward to Princess Raccoon most, it could well be his last film... really enjoyed a couple of Kim Jee-woon's other films as well (The Quiet Family, A Tale Of Two Sisters).

three weeks pass...
Things.

Eric von H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

i can't really get excited about any of these.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

according to arte-tv.com election is a non stop bloodbath

fe zaffe (fezaffe), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

I'd guess the Dardennes one is what I'm most primed to see, but it's always hard to work up a lather this soon in advance. I won't see a number of these until next April.

Eric von H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

grr, I hate being so far away - in Paris they'd screen all this stuff not too long after the festival and you could see it well before the real theatrical release. I didn't know Cronenberg had even finished his latest but can't wait for that.. Also looking forward to the Dardennes and Johnnie To. The Shinji Aoyama film looks very interesting!

daria g (daria g), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 21:00 (twenty years ago)

"alors, c'est une blood-bath non-stop!"

sorry, "bain de sang"

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 21:16 (twenty years ago)

Manhola Dargis seems to think that the Reygadas is a lock for one of the top couple awards. Sentiment is swinging Haneke's way. I'm putting my bets on Hou for the Palme.

Any other predictions? Michael Pitt or Bill Murray for best actor?

Eric von H. (Eric H.), Friday, 20 May 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

"tonight a french film could well win the palme" : that's the first thing i heard on the radio when i woke up this morning. I was really excited by the idea of the Larrieu finally getting the recognition they deserve, when i realised they were talking about... Haneke

---bruno, Saturday, 21 May 2005 13:15 (twenty years ago)

ha!

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 21 May 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

news articles kept referring to him as a "french filmmaker"

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 21 May 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

the title of this thread irritates me.

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 21 May 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

Man I am not excited at all to see that Tommy Lee Jones movie.

Jarmusch's speech wasn't as inspiring as Ebert and Insdorf made it out to be. Hanna Laslo's, however, was quite nice.

L'Histoire d'Eric H. (Eric H.), Saturday, 21 May 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

(x-post)

It's not supposed to be snarky.

L'Histoire d'Eric H. (Eric H.), Saturday, 21 May 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

god i hate newsnight. also: fuck this 'star wars' gets political thing. don't even try to touch that.

N_RQ, Saturday, 21 May 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

the dardennes bros just won a palme d'or. YAY for La Belgique!

nathalie's baby (stevie nixed), Saturday, 21 May 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

oh! their second? i didn;t like "Rosetta" much.

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 21 May 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

scratch that - i didn't like it AT ALL.

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 21 May 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

i think they're okay. a bit samey and... religious, perhaps.

N_RQ, Saturday, 21 May 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

i liked it, and "the son." good for les dardenne.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 21 May 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

I don't really know if it's a long-running thing or not, but The Hollywood Reporter has a piece basically predicting the end of Cannes. By some measures, anyway.

Also slag off on Woody Allen, which is kind of easy these days. Not that I didn't jump on the bandwagon.

EComplex (EComplex), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 02:01 (twenty years ago)

Yes, cheers for les Dardenne. They are very good. It's weird, when I see their films I think, hmm, that wasn't much, and then a couple years later I find they really stick with me. Can't wait to see this.

What was the word on the Aoyama? Any good? Did anything really outrageous happen this year?

daria g (daria g), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 02:40 (twenty years ago)

fuck did i hate rosetta--the worst kind of nobilty of suffering, left wing pseduo piety

anthony, Tuesday, 24 May 2005 04:03 (twenty years ago)

no, anthony, please. not nobility of suffering -- useless suffering.

youn, Tuesday, 24 May 2005 04:17 (twenty years ago)

i'm sorry but this piece you linked to is stupid.

The Cannes perennials -- Jarmusch, Gus Van Sant, Lars von Trier, Wim Wenders, Hou Hsiao-Hsien, Amos Gitai, Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, David Cronenberg, Atom Egoyan and Michael Haneke -- are far more prized names overseas than stateside. Most U.S. moviegoers wouldn't recognize most of them". "You almost look at this year's Competition films and don't have to worry about buying anything", says Warner Independent Pictures president Mark Gill

Maybe. But how could this mean there's a problem with these directors or with the festival ? The fact that "many of the auteurs in the Cannes competition are hard sells in America", that americans don't want to buy masterpieces by real geniuses is more the sign of a problem with the US market. (imo)

---Bruno, Tuesday, 24 May 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

Variety's coverage of the event is equally condescending.

L'Histoire d'Eric H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

I didn't see that in Rosetta at all, Anthony. It is what it is, you know? Very plain. If they'd tried to throw some kind of message over it I'd have tuned in to that pretty quick, and been annoyed.

daria g (daria g), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

like they fucking care! none of these directors seem to be concerned about their box office in the states, and most of them never finance their films with american studio money, and all of them seem to be doing alright with getting films done every few years or so.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

ten months pass...
I'd guess the Dardennes one is what I'm most primed to see

It's always the ones you're most excited to see that let you down the hardest, huh?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 20:17 (nineteen years ago)

Like Thank God It's Friday? hehehe

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 20:23 (nineteen years ago)

That too. I was comparably depressed by both.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 20:37 (nineteen years ago)

Well, as I was sayin'...

the Dardennes bros' "L'Enfant"

L'Enfant was way better than Rosetta at least. It figures that it's their riff on Pickpocket, which I'm not crazy about either.

The lead actor looks like a younger Thomas Haden Church.
