My roommate's girlfriend didn't know who Jessie Owens was...

This will be an extended thread for me to share with you my roommate, his stupidity, and that of his girlfriend. File alongside Ally's (or whichever one she made) annoying co-worker thread, or any various anal sex threads.

To continue the opening, I had to explain over the phone who he was, and how important it was for him to wave his race (genetic and his talent) in the face of Hitler, etc.

She said she felt that House, MD on the Fox network, was one of those shows that made you feel smarter from having watched it.

Jimmy Mod Knows You Eat Your Own Farts (ModJ), Monday, 2 May 2005 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Erm. *cough* This might sound a *little* strange, but utterly fantastic a figure as Jesse Owens is, I wouldn't *necessarily* think everyone would be completely familiar with him. I agree it would be nice.

"Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but mockery is the sincerest form of mockery." Hooray!

Curious George (Bat Chain Puller) (Rock Hardy), Monday, 2 May 2005 23:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Clearly there is a need for an "I Love the 30s" series.

the name rang a bell, but i didn't remember exactly who he was until you mentioned hitler.

AN EXCUSE TO SHOW SOMEONE BLAZING SADDLES. Why are you complaining?

I met someone at a party who--as a junior English major--thought that AFRICA WAS A WHOLE COUNTRY.

giboyeux (skowly), Monday, 2 May 2005 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahaha. To both those!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 May 2005 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

House is pretty cool.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 2 May 2005 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

...and my roommate had to be patiently told that countries in S.America were not actually states in a larger S.American union.

Dude. They're ENTIRE CONTINENTS.

giboyeux (skowly), Monday, 2 May 2005 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

My gf's ex-roommate once had to ask what was the nearest star to Earth. And why the space shuttle doesn't hit the stars when it blasts off.

Girolamo Savonarola, Monday, 2 May 2005 23:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Who is Jessie Owens?

Cathy (Cathy), Monday, 2 May 2005 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Never ask any American anything about out-of-our-borders geography. Or any geography questions at all. They don't know.

andy --, Monday, 2 May 2005 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Jessie Owens

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Monday, 2 May 2005 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

breasts!

miccio (miccio), Monday, 2 May 2005 23:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Was he really 'that important'? Not to diminish his stature or whatever, but it's not like a black American in Macon, GA circa 1936 was really worried about upstaging Hitler. They had more pressing matters at hand, I think.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Monday, 2 May 2005 23:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I know someone who thought Enoch Powell was Prime Minister.

Cathy (Cathy), Monday, 2 May 2005 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

My roommate claims he is not a pot head, but he just professed to his pot head friends that he got hustled for weed from a dude who LIVES UPSTAIRS. The dude has 20 of my roommates dollars, and my roommate sees the dude all the time.

Jimmy Mod Knows You Eat Your Own Farts (ModJ), Monday, 2 May 2005 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Never ask any American anything about out-of-our-borders geography. Or any geography questions at all. They don't know.

Indeed.

My favourite bit: "Only 89 percent of the Americans surveyed could find their own country on the map."

Si Carter (Si Carter), Monday, 2 May 2005 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I wonder if your roommate's gf knows who Jesse Owens is?

most disappointing "my idiot roommate" thread ever

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Was he really 'that important'? Not to diminish his stature or whatever, but it's not like a black American in Macon, GA circa 1936 was really worried about upstaging Hitler. They had more pressing matters at hand, I think.

exactly, that's why he upstaged a lot more than just l'il ol' hitler.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 00:44 (twenty-one years ago)

and he sure put hitler in his place, wow!

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 00:47 (twenty-one years ago)

(sorry, i mean jesse owens rocks of course. but i guess if there's a context in which i'd use the word "humanism" as a pejorative, it would be in assailing those Black History Month-style encomiums where jessie owens "stood up" to hitler etc.)

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 00:48 (twenty-one years ago)

(that wasn't directed at you, hstencil.)

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Somewhere in tv guide on line land, someone claimed in House, when Hugh pretends to be a British doctor that he was actually speaking with his normal accent.
I felt smarter when I saw that episode last week.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I wasn't aware that Owens and his victories in '36 had a major role in altering the landscape of race relations in the US. I've only seem him written about in the context of Hitler, not giving hope/encouragement/pride/etc. to African-Americans.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 01:06 (twenty-one years ago)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 04:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Jesse Owens had great hair at the Olympics.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 04:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Jesse Owens is pretty famous. No one else outran Hitler's zeppelin.

webber (webber), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 04:41 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a scene in the made-for-TV movie where Owens keeps getting called out by the judges for stepping on the line in the long jump. He's not, of course, but it's the Germans running the show here. One of his coaches tells him to start the jump a foot from behind the line. That way, the coaches won't be able to call him out because it'd be too obvious. It puts Owens at a disadvantage since he's handicapped himself a foot, but as we all know, everything works out in the end.

I think about that a lot. Having to jump from a foot back while everyone else gets to jump from the line. That's just the way it has to be done sometimes.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 05:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know who Jessie Owens is either. And I don't think I want to know. If I did know, would I care? I'm guessing he's American and I have assumed that he was a he even though he has the name of a girl or a dog coz women rarely are talked about.

miele kitty (miele), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 07:39 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a good thing to know.

In the end, it didn't affect how it should have, but it did show him up.

Heck, I didn't know about it before I did.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 08:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought he was Jessie Jackson to be honest!

Though I'd heard the olympics story in history in school.

Who is Mike Jones Jesse Owens?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

If you're an American, and you were not, like, homeschooled, you have NO excuse for not knowing who Jesse Owens is.

Allyzay do not obtain to make download of yours MP3 (allyzay), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Thank you Ally, I apppreciate that.

My Roommate's girlfriend (who does not live with us, by the way) thought it would be a good idea to introduce our cats to each other -- she has one, possibly as a child substitute, and we have one because my roommate's father got remarried, and the cat didn't get along with the dog. I have yet to figure out what purpose introducing our cats to each other would serve.

Jimmy Mod Knows You Eat Your Own Farts (ModJ), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

that sounds like it'd be disasterous. Can I bring my cat to your cat soiree?

Allyzay do not obtain to make download of yours MP3 (allyzay), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not sure this has happened or will happen.
