WE ARE COMING TO CANADA. . .

in early August. I think we'll be in Toronto for about 6 days and Montreal for about 6 too (although perhaps we will try to get to Quebec City if we can.) Any advice on hotels, neighborhoods to see, sights, record shops, events, food, and any tricks I can play on unsuspecting canucks would be much appreciated. Tell me about your wonderful country (or at least two cities in your wonderful country) where the streets are filled with low price prescription drugs and all gay people are married and ragga-jungle events happen nightly.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 26 May 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

Somewhat related: I'm gonna be in Vancouver 6/5-6/12.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 26 May 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

Surely Pitchfork is the right place to announce Creed tour dates?

the black hand, Thursday, 26 May 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

btw dude if you haven't gotten yrs yet that wasteland mix is good

strng hlkngtn, Thursday, 26 May 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

I just got it in the mail today. It looks really good.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 26 May 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

the black hand, Thursday, 26 May 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 26 May 2005 21:43 (twenty years ago)

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 26 May 2005 21:50 (twenty years ago)

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 26 May 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

What to do with a week in Toronto?
toronto - what to do.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 26 May 2005 22:02 (twenty years ago)

gyg, let's just stop dancing around the issue. Excalibur has a wedding chapel. we'll just settle things there, and we don't have to play this dancing around the continent "coincidentally" game anymore. The people must know.

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 26 May 2005 22:05 (twenty years ago)

There is another man... his name is "Le Coq". I'm sorry db.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 26 May 2005 22:12 (twenty years ago)

I'm gonna have to coqblock

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 26 May 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

Haha hey Jess did you notice that you got a shoutout on the Wasteland mix?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 26 May 2005 23:39 (twenty years ago)

haha wtf?!

strng hlkngtn, Thursday, 26 May 2005 23:41 (twenty years ago)

actually i think that's gov. ventura

strng hlkngtn, Thursday, 26 May 2005 23:41 (twenty years ago)

Haha so modest.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 26 May 2005 23:44 (twenty years ago)

Woo hoo the Jays are playing the Yankees while we are there! Seats are crazy expensive for good seats though. $60 a pop!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 27 May 2005 00:12 (twenty years ago)

haha coqblock haha

a collectivist romantic fling! (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 27 May 2005 00:52 (twenty years ago)

the ballet was awesome!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 27 May 2005 02:24 (twenty years ago)

Were there dancers?

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 27 May 2005 06:29 (twenty years ago)

GAX man you're only staying till the 12th now? Shit you musta not gotten my last email abt my NYC trip and the contract shit (gmail was fucked that day IIRC) but fuckit it's okay, I'm home till the 10th Jul., so I can catch both you AND donut! Sausage party!

LeCoq (LeCoq), Friday, 27 May 2005 09:34 (twenty years ago)

Alex, I can hook you up with some ideas too. Give me a bit of time to write something up though, I'm off to work soon. We should FAP when you're up.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 27 May 2005 12:19 (twenty years ago)

The Jays just swept Boston and are in second place. I don't think they've done this well since the strike. Of course the Man u and Chealski of MLB will buy new teams if things don't change quickly.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Friday, 27 May 2005 12:22 (twenty years ago)

"We should FAP when you're up."

Definitely.

So anyone got good neighborhoods to stay in and hotel recommendations?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 27 May 2005 14:13 (twenty years ago)

i'll check for that in mtl.

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 27 May 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

You're gonna miss out on the best part of Canada, dudes. Which is to say, FREE TOM COCHRANE CONCERTS ALL OVER SASKATCHEWAN THIS SUMMER!

Huk-L, Friday, 27 May 2005 14:23 (twenty years ago)

Why is Tom Cochrane imprisoned again?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 27 May 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

"alarming the queen"

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 27 May 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

Do you mean "Why, is Tom Cochrane imprisoned again?" or "For what crime has T.C. been sent to the hoosegow this time?"

Huk-L, Friday, 27 May 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

Both actually!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 27 May 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

How much you looking to spend a night? Basically Toronto runs from The Royal York to The Gladstone to various hostels.

Yorkville hotels is nice, former hippie coffee shop area from the 60s now ultrapricey. Located right at Bloor and Avenue, basically walking distance to most of the nice areas downtown and on two subway lines.
Otherwise in the downtown The Delta, in the lower left is nice but might be a little more expensive then you may want:
http://photos9.flickr.com/11200343_8dc6699a71_m.jpg
The Bond Place hotel (lower right) is where we put up visiting corporate travelers who aren't important:
http://photos9.flickr.com/11200344_f5ec14c83e_m.jpg
Is much cheaper but you don't want to really go to far past it.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Friday, 27 May 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

Just a warning to people who have never visited Toronto..

Toronto has a very large downtown.. you see the skyline, then you enter it, and then it just doesn't end. Even Manhattan has breaks from the skyscrapers on small occasions. Not to say downtown Toronto is bigger than Manhattan over all.. just sayin' that it ain't as small as downtown Seattle, Portland, SF, L.A., or even Chicago... it's quite broad.

donut debonair (donut), Friday, 27 May 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

SAY
CAN YOU SEE
IIII'M COMING TO CA-NA-DA

(It kind of works!)

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 27 May 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

So I'd like to go to Quebec.

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 27 May 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

Donut, really it seems that way to visitors? I always thought that we probably had less of that and more urban sprawl than most of the other cities you mentioned. I haven't visted most of your list though, so my thinking of most major US cities as deeper and darker than here could just be based on a one time impression of being swallowed whole driving into NYC proper. Now that you mention it though, I do remember being pretty much shocked at the comparitive dinkiness of Detroit's downtown the last time I passed thataway.

Kim (Kim), Friday, 27 May 2005 22:13 (twenty years ago)

There is a small pocket of Vancouver Ilmers...

Star Cauliflower (Star Cauliflower), Saturday, 28 May 2005 02:38 (twenty years ago)

two months pass...
Okay so we've got our entire itinerary semi-planned out:

We will be in Toronto from the night of August 4th to the morning of August 9th then a day in Niagara on the Lake and then to Montreal from the 10th to the morning of the 16th. We still have only vaguish sort of plans as far as what we'll be doing when and where, but that knowing us it'll mostly involve walking and shopping and eating (and pretending that we care about museums haha.)

I would love to meet ILMers so hopefully we can arrange something for one of the nights we are there. Is there a universally good Canadian FAP night?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 28 July 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

so sad you're missing my dj night!!

but we'll have fun no doubt!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 28 July 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

i can show you cafés frequented by members of THE ARCADE FIRE!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 28 July 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

alex! ballgame.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 28 July 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

Wooh hoo! I am drooling thinking about smoked meat sandwiches. Should I start new threads for Toronto/Montreal record stores? There have to be great dancehall/jungle shops in Toronto right! The web is coughing up nothing.

We are planning on seeing the Yankees/Blue Jay's Sunday game! Tickets were insanely expensive online so we figured we'd hit up scalpers (you do have scalpers in Canada, right?)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 28 July 2005 16:59 (twenty years ago)

play de record!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 6 August 2005 02:51 (twenty years ago)

OK, maybe move it up to 8PM instead?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 6 August 2005 03:24 (twenty years ago)

Sundar, there is a brilliant map of where you can find Squirrly's on the Toronto fap thread.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Saturday, 6 August 2005 10:41 (twenty years ago)

8pm is fine for us. I'll check the interweb again tonight and make sure everything's cool.

Has anyone heard from Dr Morbius? How is the SABR convention going? Is he gonna be there tonight?

Play De Record was very cool and Luca was super nice and helpful. The only thing that saddens me is that I won't be able to listen to the choons I bought for another 2 weeks. :(

Alex in Canada, Saturday, 6 August 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

I've spoken with Dr. Morbius -- SABR is going well, he knows about the FAP and will be there.

Who knows what Alex looks like? (besides Dr. Morbius)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 6 August 2005 12:58 (twenty years ago)

awesome golfers

dog latin (dog latin), Saturday, 6 August 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

Let me know 8 or 9, Barry. 8:30? I might be at the Cinematheque til 8:05.

That Reg Hartt guy wants $20! to watch censored cartoons at his place (which are great but still)...

Sundar, yr cuz plays at midnight, correct? I'll keep that in mind.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 6 August 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

Alex looks like an over-heated tall blond-ish American fella with glasses. He'll be with an equally over-heated curvy brown haired young lady. We'll be there at 8.

Alex in Canada, Saturday, 6 August 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

Ok, i'm scared. Google is watching us. I did a search for Toronto, Squirly's and this thread comes up in the first 30 results.

we should be there 8-8:30 i think.

Kim (Kim), Saturday, 6 August 2005 18:50 (twenty years ago)

Didja lug back much ice wine?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 19 August 2005 12:58 (twenty years ago)

Yes yes, we need to know about the wines!

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Monday, 22 August 2005 12:22 (twenty years ago)

I'm coming to Canada! I'll be in Montreal from the 10th to the 16th. I could do with a little advice about where to stay - I'm going to a conference at the Universite de Montreal, but I'd like to see the city, too. Whereabouts would be a good place make it easy to get to the conference, but also easy to go out and see the town? I have no feel for how big Montreal is, or how easy it is to get around...

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 1 September 2005 07:34 (twenty years ago)

alex's b&b was insanely well-located... you should ask him for deets!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 1 September 2005 11:47 (twenty years ago)

cool. i've finally seen a map, and realised that the university is pretty inconveniently located - looks like i'll stay downtown, and have to change twice on the subway there and back. is the subway generally efficient (i.e. low wait times)?

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 1 September 2005 12:16 (twenty years ago)

yeah, pretty much. if you stay at alex's b&b you'll be right on the orange line, so travel should be pretty easy... let me know if you have any more qns!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 1 September 2005 12:21 (twenty years ago)

I wanna know if they liked the wine or not!!!

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 1 September 2005 12:42 (twenty years ago)

Well, *I* certainly liked the wine, they fed me some of it last week.

The last honest gentleman (nordicskilla), Thursday, 1 September 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

They held you down and made you drink as you protested. Oh I know.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 1 September 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

No, they gave it to me with cakes and I gladly accepted.

The last honest gentleman (nordicskilla), Thursday, 1 September 2005 16:15 (twenty years ago)

What did they get you? If it was cakes I'm guessing it was a Late Harevst or Icewine.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 1 September 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

They fed me icewine from a tall, thin bottle. The cakes were San Francisco's own. This was to celebrate Alex's birthday.

The last honest gentleman (nordicskilla), Thursday, 1 September 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

We got a bottle of Inniskilin and Reif Ice Wine (both were Vidal--we fed Adam the Reif--the former we are saving.) Both were fantastic. We did winery tours and tastings at both those places and we also did an ice wine tasting at the little wine tour place on the main drag (I forgot what the name of the winery was Peter Something.) We also got a bottle of Late Harvest Vidal from Reif that was fantastic and tasty, but unfortunately we drank it all in Montreal and now we can't get any more. :(

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 1 September 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

This is where we got the B&B from.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 1 September 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

In retrospect both of us wish we had bought more wine actually.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 1 September 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

is there a better way to find out in advance about gigs when i'm there than to go to the montreal mirror website next week?

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 1 September 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

I think it depends on what kind of gigs. I went to the Montreal DnB site to find out about stuff. I think there is a similar site for dancehall. Beyond that I don't know.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 1 September 2005 17:06 (twenty years ago)

Try http://www.montrealshows.com

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 1 September 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

what kind of thing do you want to check out when you're here?

superultramega (superultramarinated), Thursday, 1 September 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

i don't know - anything that's particularly exciting, i guess. thanks a load for the montrealshows link; i'll definitely go to see acid mothers temple (assuming it hasn't already sold out).

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 1 September 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

i used to edit the live music section of the mirror listings!! but not for a long time. montrealshows is ok for that i guess... email me & i'll let you know what i know about...

(i think i'm going to be away while you're here though)

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 1 September 2005 22:41 (twenty years ago)

Oh you just hate the new world Stillepost order Slutsky. Don't lie.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Friday, 2 September 2005 02:08 (twenty years ago)

what's a good big bookstore downtown, preferably one that'll have the bret easton ellis discounted? i'm staying here in the end, btw:

http://www.clarionmontreal.com/

oh, and are sunday trading hours as normal? or is there any reduced hours nonsense, as in england?

toby (tsg20), Friday, 9 September 2005 09:34 (twenty years ago)

Montreal, hurrah! That's a pretty decent location for having to commute to U d'M - yeah, it is kind of far from a lot of things. Re: bookstores - there are a few used bookstores on St. Catherine's in the blocks near the hotel, and there's a Chapters (big chain bookstore) on St. Catherine's at Stanley. Esoteric (record store) is also near the hotel, on North side of St. Catherine's, a block or two east of Fort (and downstairs, so you have to keep an eye out.) Sunday hours are usually 10/11am to 5pm (excluding food/restaurants, obv.)

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Friday, 9 September 2005 11:55 (twenty years ago)

thanks!

toby (tsg20), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:32 (twenty years ago)

The AMT show just got cancelled. I'm probably going to see the unfortunately-named Nutsak (Sam Shalabi + others) tomorrow night instead. This email works if you want info.

superultramega (superultramarinated), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

In Toronto or Montreal?

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

nutsak rules!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

I understand that both Toronto and Montreal AMT dates have been cancelled.

x-post

superultramega (superultramarinated), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

baaaaaaaaah, Bob Mould the day after it is then.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

Dammit.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

looks like wolf eyes are still playing that date in Toronto, at a reduced ticket price due to AMT's absence.

superultramega (superultramarinated), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 20:29 (twenty years ago)

Screw them, I want ballerina keyboard playing midget girl. Even if shes left the band.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 23:20 (twenty years ago)

:-( thanks for posting this, i'd've turned up otherwise. very annoying, though, it's the 2nd time i've had a ticket to see them and not been able to. guess i should just ring the venue to get them to refund to my card?

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 23:44 (twenty years ago)

I get to see Wolf Eyes! And MIA maybe! Montreal is EXCITING.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 03:05 (twenty years ago)

Khanate and Nadja (aidan baker) on sept 20th. Heavy September in Montreal!

superultramega (superultramarinated), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

haha, Pop Montreal starts at the end of September. POP! to balance out the Heavy? I am going to all the Heavy Pop shows, if they exist.
