Oh come on, you'd have picked this one, too.

This is the Thread Where I Say Pt. 32: It's getting kind of quiet in my city's head

luna (luna.c), Friday, 17 June 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

It's a beautiful phrase. Evocative. Noir, almost.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 17 June 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

ahh, king of the hill.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Friday, 17 June 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it's got that certain something.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 17 June 2005 20:05 (twenty years ago)

the prefered terms are dwarf or little person, btw

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Friday, 17 June 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

Midget Hookers, eh!! Hmmm.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 17 June 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

Dwarves=/midgets

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 17 June 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

Oh, apparently I'm wrong.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 17 June 2005 20:12 (twenty years ago)

No, they are different. But I think the term midget has rather been deprecated by now.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 17 June 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

"Under more balls than a vertically challenged person of the evening"

luna (luna.c), Friday, 17 June 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

That could technically refer to me, but I won't be under any balls, thank you.

Je4nne ƒur¥ (Je4nne Fury), Friday, 17 June 2005 20:45 (twenty years ago)

In my childhood during the Cleaveland administration, 'dwarf' was used to denote someone who suffered from achondroplasia.

"The term midget refers to something which is smaller than usual but well-proportioned.

In the 19th century, midget was a medical term referring to an extremely short but normally proportioned person (e.g., with growth hormone deficiency), and was used in contrast to dwarf, which denoted disproportionate shortness."

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 17 June 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

I was once privvy to a conversation between to of my friends, lets call them J and Z, who were discussing Z's obsession with midgets and dwarves (this was circa "The littlest groom" on FOX I believe).

J: Why are you so obsessed with dwarves?

Z: I'm not, I'm obsessed with midgets, it annoys me that people don't know the difference between a midget and a dwarf.

J: what's the difference?

(I was waiting for the achondroplasia explanation, but what did I get?)

z: Dwarves have beards, and axes. If you don't have a beard and an ax, you're not a dwarf.

Me: What about female dwarves Z?

Z: Beards and axes, no exceptions.

Ash (ashbyman), Friday, 17 June 2005 21:59 (twenty years ago)

I can't argue with that.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 17 June 2005 22:09 (twenty years ago)

Finally the undimmed light of human reason is shone upon the issue.

xpost

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 17 June 2005 22:09 (twenty years ago)

This was also the subject of one of the funniest moments I've ever seen in a sitcom, in The Office - I won't spoil it for those who've not seen it, but Gareth's line after an explanation of the distinction between dwarves and midgets was magnificent.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 17 June 2005 22:36 (twenty years ago)

woo new thread! I just took a look at the friday sex talk/flirting thread and now I finally know where the term "rimshot" originates. It was so much less...polite in my imagination.

sgs (sgs), Friday, 17 June 2005 23:16 (twenty years ago)

being at work kinda sucks but at least tonight i get to work a white sox game.

sorry, luna, your dodgers are losing to them right now, actually.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 17 June 2005 23:43 (twenty years ago)

Mmm, midget hookah baby!

Ian Riese-Moraine: exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Friday, 17 June 2005 23:45 (twenty years ago)

They ain't my dodgers, baby. They're my Red Sox.

luna (luna.c), Saturday, 18 June 2005 00:24 (twenty years ago)

ah, right. forgot. red sox are tied with the pirates. varitek had an awesome play to get jack wilson out at the plate. wilson looked like a bonehead.

hstencil (hstencil), Saturday, 18 June 2005 00:43 (twenty years ago)

anyway let's talk about something besides baseball.

hstencil (hstencil), Saturday, 18 June 2005 00:46 (twenty years ago)

Tonight I remembered just how much I motherfucking hate personal ads.

Je4nne ƒur¥ (Je4nne Fury), Saturday, 18 June 2005 02:44 (twenty years ago)

bad date?

hstencil (hstencil), Saturday, 18 June 2005 02:53 (twenty years ago)

How on Earth... ? I thought a new one of these just got started... ? Uh, how in the world did all that conversing happen in such a short period of time? And was that a silly question?

I'm not talking about the NBA right now. It's really upsetting me, what's been happening. Nope, not going to talk about it. Hum hum hum hum hum hum hum hum hum hum hum hum hum hum hum hum hum hum hum hum hum hum hum hum hum hum hum hum hum hum hum hum hum hum hum hum hum hum.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Saturday, 18 June 2005 04:52 (twenty years ago)

hi everyone. this is a special guest appearance.

Huk-L, Saturday, 18 June 2005 04:54 (twenty years ago)

It's crazy storming out and the cool, cool window is coming in through the window and I'm listening to wistful Lyle Lovett songs, and they make me think of Tom Waits' first album and how I don't have that anymore, but I was in love when I bought it, and I listened to it a lot and thought about the girl I was in love with and now I'm here, 10 years later, listening to Lyle Lovett. Alone.

Huk-L, Saturday, 18 June 2005 05:00 (twenty years ago)

The cool, cool, WIND is coming through the window. The window already is the window. If it came through itself...I'd need something stronger than Lyle Lovett to deal with that nonsense.

Huk-L, Saturday, 18 June 2005 05:05 (twenty years ago)

what if it was a different window?

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 18 June 2005 05:06 (twenty years ago)

You're making drastic assumptions about the size of my apartment.

Huk-L, Saturday, 18 June 2005 05:08 (twenty years ago)

huk, tell me a cool wistful lyle lovett song to download RIGHT NOW!

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 18 June 2005 05:08 (twenty years ago)

i am listening to isolee.

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 18 June 2005 05:08 (twenty years ago)

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 18 June 2005 05:09 (twenty years ago)

just to make this worldwide it is cool and bright and 4 pm here. i have NO music on. there is nary a breeze.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Saturday, 18 June 2005 05:11 (twenty years ago)

I have a real sweetspot for "I live in my own mind", cuz he talks about how in high school he wasn't popular and now he's grown up and it doesn't matter. And he says it in less words than that.
Also I just d/l'd "Nobody Knows Me" and it's better.

Huk-L, Saturday, 18 June 2005 05:14 (twenty years ago)

hes the best

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Saturday, 18 June 2005 05:15 (twenty years ago)

I'm looking for rustic, vaguely rural, winsome, instrumental where possible to listen to as I drive north across the prairie into the boreal Valhalla for fishing lures.
So far I've got a lot of Tin Hat Trio and Calexico.

Huk-L, Saturday, 18 June 2005 05:17 (twenty years ago)

hold the phone.
I think the High School line that I like a whole bunch (as well as some weird stuff about Paris and Wim Wenders) is in "The Truck Song" cuz it sure as hell ain't in "I live in my own mind."

Huk-L, Saturday, 18 June 2005 05:19 (twenty years ago)

haha first sntence i was thinking...calexico.

fahey?

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Saturday, 18 June 2005 05:20 (twenty years ago)

jeff or joe?

Huk-L, Saturday, 18 June 2005 05:22 (twenty years ago)

jim

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Saturday, 18 June 2005 05:22 (twenty years ago)

holy crap. that thunder just now was SCARY loud.

Huk-L, Saturday, 18 June 2005 05:23 (twenty years ago)

careful with that modem eugene

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Saturday, 18 June 2005 05:31 (twenty years ago)

It's such a nice night here - I was just sitting outside with the dogs, looking up at where the stars are supposed to be...

luna (luna.c), Saturday, 18 June 2005 06:10 (twenty years ago)

It was beautiful here too. But um, were the stars not where they were supposed to be?

Je4nne ƒur¥ (Je4nne Fury), Saturday, 18 June 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

Because someone stole them from the sky and put them in your eyes!

Markelby (Mark C), Saturday, 18 June 2005 15:52 (twenty years ago)

Time to visit LA, Sam--Austin sounds miserable, weather-wise.

In other news, I have a complete Sat night planned out and I woke up today and am feeling kind of unmotivated to actually *do* it. I don't know that to make of this. Part of the PMS? To be ignored? To give in to and stay home?

Orbit (Orbit), Saturday, 18 June 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

isn't LA hot and nasty though Orbit?

We had such a typical Austin morning - breakfast at the Kerbey Lane cafe, farmer's market for fresh tomatoes and peaches, and then new insane Whole Foods for salmon steaks and vanilla ice cream (they will send your groceries down to the underground parking garage via a little conveyor belt for you!). later we're going to . . .a bbq. *sigh*

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Saturday, 18 June 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

Lovely picture!

luna (luna.c), Sunday, 10 July 2005 02:29 (twenty years ago)

In case you wondered, the conceited oily bohunk is no longer in my life. He was weird after all.

luna (luna.c), Sunday, 10 July 2005 02:32 (twenty years ago)

Now accepting applications!

luna (luna.c), Sunday, 10 July 2005 02:32 (twenty years ago)

And thinking maybe I didn't need another beer after all!

luna (luna.c), Sunday, 10 July 2005 02:33 (twenty years ago)

Well, I need a glass of wine!
Luna, good riddance.

And we should make an actual application and post it to LA Craigslist and make people fill it out.

Question #!: Are you now, or have you ever been, a sociopath?

Orbit (Orbit), Sunday, 10 July 2005 03:18 (twenty years ago)

Question #2: Do you now, or have you at any time in the past, have human heads in your freezer or the desire to make a lamp out of human skin?

Question #3: Have you ever had a drink thrown in your face based on the fact that you are a raging asshole?

Question #4: Do you drive a large vehicle to make up for your lack of sexual prowess or small penis?

luna (luna.c), Sunday, 10 July 2005 04:53 (twenty years ago)

Question #5: Do you know the approximate location of the clitoris?

Orbit (Orbit), Sunday, 10 July 2005 04:59 (twenty years ago)

Question #6: Do you spend, on average, more than two hours in front of a mirror every morning?

luna (luna.c), Sunday, 10 July 2005 05:02 (twenty years ago)

Question #7: How in the fuck do women still go for your pathetic, egotistical ass?

oops (Oops), Sunday, 10 July 2005 05:08 (twenty years ago)

Amen.

luna (luna.c), Sunday, 10 July 2005 05:09 (twenty years ago)

Dee, how's your momma?

luna (luna.c), Sunday, 10 July 2005 05:13 (twenty years ago)

I just noticed that I have 50 gmail invites! Anyone still need one? Have friends, relatives, puppies, that need one?

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 11 July 2005 00:54 (twenty years ago)

I've got 150, Orbit... I can't give them away.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 11 July 2005 02:55 (twenty years ago)

Ok seriously, I cannot take watching Extreme Home Improvement or whatever it's called. Jesus, I'm blubbering like Tammy Faye.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 11 July 2005 02:58 (twenty years ago)

So you saw the Dolans too, huh, luna? Oh man. That whole thing -- so sad, yet there's opportunity for a brighter tomorrow.

Thank you guys for saying what you've said in response to one of my last posts herein. I'm deeply appreciative of your consideration and personal views.

My mom: Still really dizzy, really weak, etc. She's trying to stick to a new way of eating, a way of eating I've (sorta) adopted and am currently still struggling mightily with. She's also trying to adapt to constant lower blood sugar levels, which after being accustomed to super-high ones is rather tricky. And with me being all snippy because of summer's heat and this blasted diet, things haven't been pleasant at home.

So that's Archel's Matt! Aw. The two make a very lovely couple, and they seem to be riding high on a cloud of happiness. Aw. This is good.

God. Me need go return to reading rest of Sunday newspaper. Today was way busier than it needed to be and I didn't really get to sit down to the newspaper the way I wanted to. But I did go to a really good Sunday morning service (8 a.m.) today, one at a church that's actually close to home, and that was good.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Monday, 11 July 2005 03:55 (twenty years ago)

I did - I was bawling by the end. It happens every time I watch that darned show.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 11 July 2005 05:44 (twenty years ago)

Tried to go to bed an hour ago after a shit day, can't sleep... urgh.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 11 July 2005 07:02 (twenty years ago)

Such a happy picture or Archel & Matt. I have had a rollercoaster w/e of emotions. I have not been able to think about much else other than Liz & Robster & as each moment passes I am devastated that there is no news. Those of you who have been saying that you don't know Liz & feel almost embarassed to be so upset, I think it's totally reasonable. I am totally gutted by this as Liz & Rob are so lovely. I am trying to stay positive. Please God we will hear some good news soon.
My other news this w/e was that myself & J have become godparents to his best friend's baby. I met the baby on Saturday & he is so beautiful. I was really quite emotional owing to new baby & no news, but it was nice to be cuddling this little baby who was so pure & innocent. It kind of helped to make sense of things & at the same time led to even more confusion.
Big hugs to all of you.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Monday, 11 July 2005 07:06 (twenty years ago)

Aw, hugs, Pink!

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 11 July 2005 07:08 (twenty years ago)

hugs darlin xxx

luna (luna.c), Monday, 11 July 2005 07:12 (twenty years ago)

Wow, so you couldn't sleep either?

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 11 July 2005 07:14 (twenty years ago)

Cheers ladies (i am appreciating hugs & love so much at the moment) , hugs right back at you both. xxx

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Monday, 11 July 2005 07:26 (twenty years ago)

I can't even open that thread anymore - not knowing is just breaking my heart.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 11 July 2005 07:28 (twenty years ago)

As I just posted on that thread, I wanted to check it in case those with my mobile number had just mistakenly forgotten to let me know, but then there was a picture of some "missing" posters with Liz's amongst them. Seeing her name in print in the lists of missing is too much.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Monday, 11 July 2005 07:32 (twenty years ago)

Yeah it is - and I'm one of the ones who doesn't know her... I just.. this isn't supposed to happen.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 11 July 2005 07:36 (twenty years ago)

I just loaded all the Fake Fictions' mp3s onto my ipod and now I'm gonna take it (and them) to bed. Sweet dreams Orbit, and Pink, I hope you have a good day. xxxx

luna (luna.c), Monday, 11 July 2005 07:38 (twenty years ago)

It isn't & I don't know what to make of it. I certainly am not a "close friend" of Liz's or anything. We have met several times & I have conversed with her on ILX, mostly about cooking! All w/e I have felt that I have been overreacting & have almost been embarassed, but I cannot help it & if this has upset you, it is perfectly understandable.
x-post

Good night Luna, sweet dreams. xxx

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Monday, 11 July 2005 07:39 (twenty years ago)

xposts It is for me too Pink. I couldn't take reading the newspaper yesterday for that reason. This is making me realize how much I love my friends and this city and even all the strangers in it, even if my instinct now is to withdraw and stay in, I'm trying to fight it.

sgs (sgs), Monday, 11 July 2005 07:39 (twenty years ago)

It must be tough Sarah, actually being in the thick of it (london I mean). We are heading down to London in a few weeks & I have to say I am nervous. Nervous about being amongst it all I mean. It will not stop me though.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Monday, 11 July 2005 07:43 (twenty years ago)

Today's paper said that the police haven't started to identify the casualties because they're focusing on catching the bombers. While this is sorta undersstandable, it surely isn't making things easier for those who're wondering whether their loved ones are among them or not.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 11 July 2005 07:48 (twenty years ago)

I'm sorry if that sounded grim, I certainly don't want to give up hope yet.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 11 July 2005 07:52 (twenty years ago)

I hope you have a big bed, luna. I'm the queen of stealing covers. I woke up this morning and realized I was sleeping in the middle of the queen-sized bed with my legs and arms sprawled out towards the four corners. At some point during the night, Nick took refuge on the futon, poor thing.

Does anyone have a phone number for Liz??

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 11 July 2005 13:31 (twenty years ago)

Also, I forgot to mention... Great pic, Archel! What a cheerful thing to see on a Monday morning. :-D

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 11 July 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

Luckily for all of us, I do have a big bed. Also, so far, Lasso the Moon is my favorite song.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 11 July 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

Are we all getting lucky, Luna??

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 11 July 2005 15:08 (twenty years ago)

What do you mean by phone number, Sarah? I have Liz's phone number but apart from a text I sent her on Thursaday morning I haven't called it. rest assured that enough people will have, though.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 11 July 2005 15:09 (twenty years ago)

Also, so far, Lasso the Moon is my favorite song.

It is a really, really good song.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 11 July 2005 15:15 (twenty years ago)

Depends on whether or not you find yourself in my bed, Mark.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 11 July 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

That's all I meant, Markelby. I couldn't remember if anyone had actually been able to leave her a message or anything.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 11 July 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

Okay, what are we doing for part 34? I'm getting a little tired of the midget hooker balls.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 11 July 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

I had a good idea this morning, and, oh wait:
my new favourite Andy Kim song: "Baby, How'd We Ever Get This Way"

or, "Lasso the Moon" even works (though that might make a good fall theme)

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 11 July 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

Huk, I think Nick is trying to cop your look in his new photos. Have you seen them?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 11 July 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

I think they're really cute, but I admit I didn't realize the first one was him... wasn't til I got to the last that I thought 'hmm, that looks like Nick...'

luna (luna.c), Monday, 11 July 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

The Talented Mr. N/A!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 11 July 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

I thought exactly what Luna thought - "oh, great, ANOTHER ilx hot boi for me to feel like my sexuality's threatened envious of - oh, it's Nick!"

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 11 July 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

So when Nick tries to look like me, it's hot, even to boyz. But when I look like me, it's boner kryptonite (at least to Hstencil). NOT FAIR.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 11 July 2005 15:48 (twenty years ago)

Awww, you're adorable.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 11 July 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

Also, so far, Lasso the Moon is my favorite song.

Me too.

M. White (Miguelito), Monday, 11 July 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for the Lasso the Moon comments.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 11 July 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)
