This "Vegetarian Sampler" from the Lebanese restaurant near my work is hit-or-miss. While the bhaba ghanoush is zesty and smoky, the hummus is bland and lacks texture. These pitas are thin, almost more like naan in shape and size. I appreciate the extra garnishes, like the feta cheese and olives, but the dolmades were dry and not tangy enough. The falafel was delicious but I could have used more than two pieces. Finally, I don't like tabbouleh, so I'm not eating it.

Manicotti from the cafe... creamy tird.

You don't like tabbouleh? ASSHOLE.

Mushroom crepe...expert levels of garlicocity, immaculate texture.
Blackened tilapia...far too much spices on the exterior. Shit was caked on. Underneath though lied a gorgeous chunk of fish!

I bought some harvest grain rolls from Sainsbury's, I put butter, ham and ketchup in them. They were pretty nice. I had a nice glass of Ribena to wash it down with (I used some Evian from the fridge instead of tap water, I felt a bit decadent). I then ate a honey and pican pastry, it was really great (I had the other one at tea, as there were two in the packet and no one to share it with). I spent the afternoon in bed, listening to Yo La Tengo. It was a good lunch, one of the best I've had this week.

Baby BobO (nordicskilla), Friday, 1 July 2005 16:21 (nineteen years ago)

Now you expect me to carefully read entire threads? The cheek... Chopped salad's sounding pretty good though, I must admit. I wonder how I got that idea.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 1 July 2005 16:23 (nineteen years ago)

I remember when I was a kid, I ordered a pair of X-ray spex out of the back of a Superman comic book. I was so excited about those x-ray spex, contemplating all the exciting adventures I was going to have, all the crimes I was going to foil, all the new friends I was going to make. Every day when I came home from school I would run to the mailbox to see if they had arrived. Then one day, they came. I tore the box open, pulled out the glasses, and put them on. I couldn't believe it. They didn't work. The walls stayed opaque. I was crushed, and spent the rest of the day lying in bed weeping. At the time, it was the worst day of my life, but when I was more mature, I realized that the anticipation of the X-ray spex, the imagination, the hoping, the longing, the license to dream, was well worth the 50 cents I had mailed off that summer morn. And so it was, as well, with the "Vegetarian Sampler" from the Lebanese restaurant near my work.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 1 July 2005 16:25 (nineteen years ago)

Was this in India?

Baby BobO (nordicskilla), Friday, 1 July 2005 16:32 (nineteen years ago)

Was it not made with real vegetarian, n/a?

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 1 July 2005 16:33 (nineteen years ago)

It's in the planning stages, as in "I don't have a clue." What should I have?

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Friday, 1 July 2005 16:34 (nineteen years ago)

I approached the two-day-old vegetable ziti, left over from a retirement party, with some trepidation; after all, I've been burned before. But -- after a minor trip to the office microwave -- my fears turned out to be largely unsustainable. There are few things more comforting than tepid leftover workplace pasta, and my tastebuds do not need to be challenged for me to remember that my lunch was plentiful and free.

The leftover salad, sadly, is wilting and leaves much to be desired. But the french dressing, spooned out of a coffee cup, covers all nature of lettuce-based sins, and proves a delightful accompaniment to the main course.

Two stars, and a slap on the ass. (MC)

The Wiggy Special: albacore tuna mixed with a mayonnaise, a hint of mustard, pickle relish and a touch of chopped red onion, served on whole wheat seeded bread with fresh lettuce and tomatoes. This sandwich, while consistently good arrives in a plastic baggie that has been jostled around in a large leather purse amoung various other items such as sunglasses, wallet, keys the errant lipstick or two which sometimes compromises the presentation quality of the sandwich. Overall a good bet though. Wiggy rating: 6 cuz I made it with love…. Goes nicely with a Diet C0k3.

Wiggy (Wiggy), Friday, 1 July 2005 16:47 (nineteen years ago)

Turkey and smoked swiss on whole wheat, with lettuce and dijon. Boring, but I'm so apathetic about everything today, the meal fit right in. I'm still really craving a drink after that dry sammich, but have not mustered up the passion to open the cabinet right next to me to take out the water and pour it in a glass.

What this is all lacking is a piece of really bitter dark chocolate. That would make up for just about anything really.

crud! Nick you beat me to it! Shoot!

Wiggy (Wiggy), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:12 (nineteen years ago)

The burping has begun. The burps are demure and charming, and may I say cute, in a way. However, they are reminding me of just how lacklustre that lunch was today. I don't suppose there would be any quality chocolate in the vending machine.

Also the water tasted a little minerally.

geyser muffler and a quarter (Dave225), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:24 (nineteen years ago)

A small chicken caesar wrap and some sort of dipping sauce. The taste is tremendous, although the wrap is too small. Not much else to say, really. Coca Cola kind of sucks.

Eating lunch downtown usually turns into a routine of quiet desperation as the choices are naturally limited by time and rapidity so when a new restaurant emerges, there is always an upsurge in hope that, finally, lunch will no longer be a dreary litany of day after day creeping in a petty pace. When J's Kitchen opened in the old Braizz spot, I must admit the association with the former tenant had not left me with any feelings of glee but I noticed one day walking home from work that it's set up in the traditional downtown salad bar style and resolved to lunch there the next day.

There line consists in half cold and half hot dishes refilled constantly over the lunch hour. The cold includes standard salad fare, some decent looking fresh fruit, and simple sushi. It also has some fun surprises, stuffed tofu triangles, caprese skewers, a kind of ceviche of shrimp and squid, an asian-style slaw... The hot food includes teriyaki chicken, fried filets of snapper, pot roast, roast turkey, baked brussel sprouts, green beans, pot stickers, and tofu in noodles.

There are three registers to keep the noonday line flowing and one whole side of the cement floored, somewhat sparse room consists of west-facing windows which help brighten the interior.

Today's lunch consisted of a Greek salad (which was inspid, actually), the ceviche which was tasty, well-balanced and not too tart, and the teriyaki chicken, which must just have come out from the kitchen, it was so hot. Some days I just get the Japanese cucumber salad, California rolls, and some spicy tuna. Others I get the pot roast and the brussel sprouts. The selection is varied enough that I can eat there two or three times per week without getting bored though I think the Asian owners/staff sometimes do a better job with Asian dishes than with some of the others. They also have a full selection of sodas, juices, water, and drinks. Try it out.

ok, i had a clif bar for lunch so i'm gonna get all gonzo with the form and review my dinner instead.

WTF IS IT with these west coast ninnies who like their pizza crust chewy and their "sub" rolls doughy and mushy? back in new york if we got handed this kinda baby food we'd key signor pizzaman in the eye! but here we are in the sonoran desert, where they eat SOFT TACOS and all the restaurants are drive-thru lest anyone have to spend two seconds outside the protective shell of automoburbia and sully their lilywhite flip-flops. it's a drag. like tonight at mario's -- which by the way is the most republican pizzeria outside of staten island, seriously, they've got "these colors don't run" posters and the liquor store right next door has a big green ARMY TANK parked out front -- i got a meatball sub and it was far out, i mean the meatballs were well-seasoned and had that perfect balance between meatiness and meat-extender-ness that good meatballs should have, and the sauce coulda had more presence but it didn't interfere with the meatballs and kept them from being dry (which they weren't to begin with), and the cheese was cheese but there wasn't too much of it, just enough to make its point and shut its trap, dig? but the roll couldn't stand up to all this. it got soggy and everything slipped right through. don't get me square, i'd eat soup with my fingers if i could and in fact i don't own many utensils at all, but a sandwich is a multi-pronged food efficiency program that delivers the goods from your lunchbox to your mouth with minimum hassle and papa don't take no mess so neither should you when you're eating a sandwich! Chicken & Rice Leftover Burrito Extraordinaire
Release by: Fridge & Microwave
***1/2 (out of a possible ****)

Body: Releasing this directly on the heels of their debut Burrito Night With The Boy, Chicken & Rice shocks with their surprisingly vital return effort. Building on the same palate that made their debut so sensational, the inclusion of new players such as Guacamole (on layer 5) and Lettuce (simply SHREDDING layer 7) helps make this a success in it's own right.

Having only recently discovered the joys of falafel with salad, hummus and sweet chili sauce tucked up in wholemeal pittas I am delighted to report that this morsel is easy to prepare to a highly satisfactory standard. If I had one criticism it would be that one is not enough, leaving one to wonder if it might be preferable for there to be pittas the size of elephant ears available. A generous slathering of hummus is advised, but not too liberal with the sweet chili. The falafel was not particularly stand-out but fine, cut into slices but would have perhaps benefitted from greater mushiness and warmth. Sliced cherry tomatoes and strips of iceberg lettuce round it off but the subtle citric essence of the lemony pittas definitely gave it a slight edge. A can of cherry Coke and a Sainsbury's chocolate muffin added insolence to indulgence. Would eat again.

Debriefing after the construction and consumption of my noon-time sandwich (aka "panini"):

The inner sandwich materials consisted of two paper-thin slices of Genoa salami, provolone and mozzarella cheeses, and organic chunky tomato sauce. The materials were placed inbetween two slices of country sourdough bread, the topmost of which supported a drizzle of olive oil and an additional slice of provolone cheese. The construct was heated for 2-3 minutes on a George Foreman grill.

The bread was overly robust for the Italian flavors of the sandwich, but perhaps necessary to contain the questionable amount of cheese contained within. The salami was flavorful and responded well to the increase in temperature. The tomato sauce proved to be an impressive down-to-the-wire addition to the unit, providing lubrication and the impression of a more sophisticated dinner entree.

I had concerns about the possible jauntiness of the cheese topping, placed as it were outside conventional bread boundaries. However, after melting it provided a clear direction for the sandwich and a pleasant salty topping. Operation: Fat Italian is deemed to have met its objectives swiftly and efficiently.

Hot Dog From University Vendor
The latest in a series of forgettable back-to-school instant-fix junk lunches, distinguished only by its lack of mustard and the almost aggressive blandness of the bun. Thoroughly unsatisfying. Next time you want to eat on the cheap, go for the reliable, if only slight less boring chicken mayo toasted sandwich. 3/10

two weeks pass...
Reposted without permission:

I just had a microwavable Vegetable Korma for lunch.
It went like so:
I had a lunch meeting with Vegetable Korma.
A few minutes into the meeting, I thought to myself, "Hmm... I don't think this is working out, but he's so colorful and so exotic. Plus, I wouldn't want him to think I was being prejudiced, seeing as how he's Indian..."
So I plowed on through, filled out all his paperwork, smiled as I shook his hand, and pointed him in the direction of the Board of Digestion.
As I feared, someone from the Board called me soon afterwards. She said, "I have a Mr. Korma standing at my desk. He says you sent him here."
"Yeah, so?"
"Listen, you and I both know he has no business being in my office. He's too spicey, for starters."
So I want to say, "You're such a racist!" but instead I say, "Won't happen again - sorry! I promise!" And she's like, "It's not going to happen NOW either..." But finally, after much arguing, she agrees to process his paperwork. THANK GOD!

I forgot to mention that she noted SEVERAL TIMES that she had no problems sending Mr. Korma right back up to me. "YOU deal with him then!" she threatened.

This is a semiserious review, because I have long been despondent over the surprising lack of vegetarian Hot Pockets, but recently I discovered Amy's Pocket Sandwiches. Last week I had a feta & spinach thing that was kind of like a spanikopita, and today I had a spinach pizza one, and both were delicious! Oddly enough, both claim tofu as an ingredient (spanikopita with tofu? spinach pizza with tofu?) but I noticed no tofu in either one. Recommended.
