State capitals and state capitols -- search and destroy!

Inspired by Delaware vs. Rhode Island

I nominate Tallahassee for having the most priapic state capitol building. Sure, it's not as tall as the one in Baton Rouge, but they don't have "balls" like we do!

As state capitals, I'm pretty fond of Columbia, South Carolina. It's very lush and hilly -- or at least it's been that way when I've gone there.

I like how Minnesota's and Wisconsin's are reminiscent of the Sacre Coeur. The capitol in Bismarck looks like an apartment building for the elderly in downtown Tally Ho.

Ian Riese-Moraine has been xeroxed into a conduit! (Eastern Mantra), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 22:47 (twenty years ago)

I imagine the Sacré Coeur was built, or at least finished after them, though, Ian.

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 22:52 (twenty years ago)

Wikipedia:

Minnesota State Capitol is located in Minnesota's capital city, Saint Paul, and houses the Minnesota Senate, Minnesota House of Representatives, the Office of the Attorney General and the Office of the Governor. The building also includes a chamber for the Minnesota Supreme Court, although court activities usually take place in the next-door Minnesota Judicial Center. The building was designed by Cass Gilbert and modeled after Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome. It is believed to be one of just four or five buildings in the world with an unsupported marble dome. This one is the second-largest of the group. Work began in on the capitol in 1896, and construction was completed in 1905. It is the third building to serve this purpose: the first capitol was destroyed by fire in 1881, and the second was completed in 1883, but was considered to be too small almost immediately.

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 22:55 (twenty years ago)

Wikipedia:

The Wisconsin State Capitol, located in Madison, Wisconsin, houses both arms of the Wisconsin legislature, the state Supreme Court, and the Office of the Governor. The current building, completed in 1917, is actually the fourth building to serve as state capitol since Wisconsin was granted statehood in 1848 and the third located in Madison.

[edit]
The 1904 fire
On the night of February 26, 1904, a gas jet ignited a newly-varnished ceiling in the third capitol building. A nearby University reservoir was empty, so water had to be brought in from Milwaukee to fight the blaze. The situtation was further complicated by the bitter cold temperatures; by the time the water reached Madison, it had started to freeze. As a result, the entire structure except the north wing burned to the ground.

[edit]
The current Capitol Building
In 1906, the state building commission approved plans by architect George Browne Post for the new state capitol building. Due to financial limitations and the need for immediate office space to house state government employees, the construction of the new building was extended over several years and focused on building one wing at a time.

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 22:56 (twenty years ago)

Wikipedia:

The Basilica of the Sacré Cœur (Sacred Heart) is a Parisian Roman Catholic church and landmark, crowning the butte Montmartre ('Montmartre hill'), the highest point in Paris.

The nineteenth century church was designed by the architect Paul Abadie (who died in 1884, when only the foundations had been laid) in the Romano-Byzantine architectural style. Its foundation stone was laid in 1875, and was built with the direct involvement of the Third French Republic to mark the foundation of the new French state whose constitutional laws were enacted that year. It also was intended as a public monument to mark the memory of the many French citizens who lost their lives in the Franco-Prussian War and its aftermath, the Commune of 1871. However it was not completed until 1914 and not officially opened for worship until 1919 after the end of the First World War, which ironically was seen by many French people as revenge for Prussia's¹ defeat of France in the Franco-Prussian War.

So I was half right.

haha Cause otherwise you'd think it was a depressing college dorm.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 23:02 (twenty years ago)

Hmm, I didn't know the Sacre Coeur was built that recently! However, it has a marble dome (if I'm not mistaken), just as Minnesota's does.

Ian Riese-Moraine has been xeroxed into a conduit! (Eastern Mantra), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 23:08 (twenty years ago)

re: signs... I know it's logical to have a sign denoting the capitol building right in front of the building for logistical purposes, but I'm talking about signs that are there because you wouldn't know it's the capitol!

donut e- (donut), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 23:11 (twenty years ago)

The Texas state capitol building in Austin is larger than the nation's capitol building (obv in Washington D.C.). Inside it looks like a building from the 1800s that hasn't had much updating to it ever since. The chairs look like they came from the 1940s. The desks look like they were a part of the original structure. There are electronic doodads everyplace, obv, but that's about it as far as any sort of modernization attempts are concerned. I was actually able to be on the floor of the House of Representatives in the TX capitol building many years ago and was surprised by how cramped everything felt, like all the desks and chairs were just a bit too close to each other.

No, Baton Rouge's is tallest. About 425 feet, if I'm not mistaken. Tallahassee's is the next highest, at 345 feet. No building in Tallahassee can be taller than the Capitol by law, which is rather disappointing because it's very unattractive and everyone makes fun of its phallic qualities. They had several designs for the tower that were much better. The Old Capitol's still in front of it, though -- it's a very typical capitol building, save for it being Southern-fried.

There are some really cool photos of the Texas state capitol on this website I just found off of Google. Both the outside and inside are well represented -- and the inside looks just as dark and 19th century as I remembered it. I'd totally forgotten about the huge aisles in the House of Representatives and Senate, though. And those photos don't show the little control-y thingies that are atop every desk in both houses, for voting and quorum purposes (I *think* quorum was also involved there -- unless it was done in an area right above the floor of the houses). But, yeah, pretty much how I remembered it.
