As if that isn't enough pressure, I've been swamped-busy at work (which will continue), traveling for work (over 34,000 miles so far this year), some freelance projects, house projects, painting, and there's this little thing called a fetus in my wife's belly. Yes, a wee Wilker is on the way and we are super excited. Is there anything else I forgot?! I mean, besides sleep and "a life"? Sorry, friends, for my long absence - I haven't forgotten you all.

The problem is, there's this little thing called "reproductive fading", which makes repeated cloning a bit of a problem. If they don't get some "new blood" to clone, their society will die. Guess who they pick? More importantly, guess how this problem gets resolved? (No, I won't tell you, but it is as obvious as you think.)

Weellll, there's this little thing called the human body (used quite a bit in scripture as an analogy) which is quite the little rhythmic machine. The - heart - beats - on - a - regular - basis - pumping - blood - into - the rest of the body. We breath in the same way. These are regular boring things that never stop. Much like, say, liturgical prayer or following a liturgical calendar year, etc., etc. These things don't stifle the Holy Spirit. They are only one vehicle through which He can work in our lives - in our communities. More later.

You're damned right I did, Neil, you blathering idoit, because there's this little thing called the "War on Terror" going on, and all your hand-wringing and "nyah-nyah-nyah" B.S. doesn't change that fact. When the Libertarian Party gets a clue regarding national defense, I'll consider voting for them again. Until then, I'll either vote Republican or no one at all.

annoying tossers who whine about irrelevant shit when there's clerly more important things to be worrying about, c or d?

ILX, Thursday, 7 July 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

Is this the new "Flush This Question Out" thread?! How Fun!

wtf people.

Or, alternatively: annoying tossers who say "why can't you all just use X" when there are very good reasons why you don't want to use X and would rather seek another, equally simple solution, C or D?

Yes, except that RSS subscribing doesn't work, email notifications won't work, etc. I suppose it makes sense for "This is Where I Say" and "Excelsior" type threads, but you people seriously need to get new computers if you can't load all of that thread.

out of curiousity, what are the "very good reasons" why you don't want to change your settings?

oops (Oops), Thursday, 7 July 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

Because often I don't get onto ILX for a while, and on busy threads I'll miss more than the last X posts.

Equally, when an old thread is revived, I'll generally want to reread it from the start.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Thursday, 7 July 2005 16:25 (twenty years ago)

And then you can click "(See older messages)".

See you're just being purposefully obtuse! Even without that setting on clicking on the links when logged in takes you to the "#unread" anchor.

no tech! (ex machina), Thursday, 7 July 2005 16:27 (twenty years ago)

then you simply click "show all messages" or whatever if you would like to read the posts that came before the last X posts.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 7 July 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

Of course the useless shits that ousted me have broken the system whereby Show All Messages was automatically selected when more than x messages were unread, and now clicking it manually loses the unread messages marker so you don't know where to start.

Not that I'm bitter.

What if you're a newcomer and don't know all the groovy tech stuff that you're talking about here? I have read the FAQ up and down and sideways and played with settings but still don't know everything. I looked to see if I could find a "proper" place to ask a technical question and could not find one. When I did something wrong I got shot down in flames for being ILX challenged and new. Whew - tough crowd, but I clearly thrive on the abuse cuz I'm still here and learning thru my mistakes.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 7 July 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

Didn't know about the last 20 messages thing, but then I've not looked at the settings page for ages. I think in the case of the London threads today it was more the SQL database struggling than people's computers, though, Jon.

no tech! (ex machina), Thursday, 7 July 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

it is hard to find, being under the heading "Thread Pages" and labelled "show messages"

Britain's Jauntiest Shepherd (Alan), Thursday, 7 July 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

If your unread new messages on a thread exceeds the number you've set that menu to, then it will show you all the unread ones (I think - it used to, anyway), so you don't need to worry on that score.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 7 July 2005 17:15 (twenty years ago)

it doesn't anymore. graham, can you fix it pls?

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 7 July 2005 17:16 (twenty years ago)

It's too bad that ILX is losing functionality, but I suppose being #175 puts a lot of load on it.

Annoying Tossers on ILX who whine about thread length when there's this little option in "Settings" ... [PART 2]

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 7 July 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

One day, ILX's FAQ pages will be updated with stuff like this, and tips on searching (esp. a recommendation to use the THREAD TITLE search box) but I'm not involved with ILX admin anymore so don't blame me.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 7 July 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

it doesn't anymore are you sure about this??

Britain's Jauntiest Shepherd (Alan), Thursday, 7 July 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

pretty sure.

hence:

Of course the useless shits that ousted me have broken the system whereby Show All Messages was automatically selected when more than x messages were unread, and now clicking it manually loses the unread messages marker so you don't know where to start.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 7 July 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

It doesn't, but seeing as that little feature completely obviated the usefulness of the "show last x messages" setting I think that making it work correctly and predictably was a good idea.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 7 July 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

(Er, I meant "undermined", not "obviated".)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 7 July 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

Yes, it's better for the two features to be completely incompatible than for them to work harmoniously together.

grraham (noodles is a cunt), Thursday, 7 July 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

How do you mean, Dan? As it works now, it makes quick-moving threads unreadable.

It's basic purpose (as I used it) is "I would like to see (n) messages of reminder, which I have read before. Or more than that if there are more than (n) new messages".

I am basing this on the idea that if you're reading a 1000-message thread, you should read or at least skim the 1000 messages, no matter what your setting.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 7 July 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

Or put another way, "that little feature" not being present completely undermines the usefulness of the "Show unread messages" feature.

(Obviously there's a compromise position, but I never had a chance to implement it and god forbid the team now in charge ever lift a finger)

Don't fuck this up! (noodles is a cunt), Thursday, 7 July 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

Andrew, at that point you might as well load the whole thread because all you're doing is wasting server bandwidth to hide 20 messages out of 9,352.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 7 July 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

And again, you're preferred is thtat "Show x messages" should break "Show unread messages" when both are enabled?
