Citgo gas and 7-11 supports Nazis!

On the bus back from work, this girl and guy were arguing about how Citgo seems to have this weird monopoly on gas stations in the Seattle area.. she said that Citgo's association with 7-11 (where most of the pumps exist) has something to do with 7-11's .. um.. Nazi support?

I've heard of Carls Jr's Nazi support back in the day, and while I wouldn't rule it out, maybe even that statement was just hyperbole for them supporting a lot of evil organizations instead. but 7-11's support Nazis?

This is new to me.

Unless I've been missing something obvious? Is this girl clued in or glued out?

Buy Citgo Gas

I bet anyone who hates on Citgo is a BushCo puppet.

yeah i was gonna link to this thread because citgo's owned by the good people of venezuela and their benevolent dictator president Hugo Chavez.

(i actually like Chavez ok)

hstencil (hstencil), Saturday, 16 July 2005 04:50 (twenty years ago)

I think Chavez's actions are pretty reasonable considering the dire situation that he faced. Everyone who hates him is a right wing media mogul or a vested interest.

ok, well, either way, from what little I read, this girl is bananas.. clearly. (She even called them "Shitgo".. haw haw haw.. )

So, Seattle is basically helping Venezuela and, by proxy, Chavez. hahaha. I'm not minding this at all for some reason!

As for Carls Jr., apologies. I forgot that outside California, they're known as Hardee's (since the 90s I think.. Hardee's bought Carls Jr. or vice versa..(?) but it's the restaurant with that yellow star with the mild freckles. Except I think Hardee's is supposed to have, like, actual edible food instead. Or maybe it's the opposite. I dunno.)

donut ferry (donut), Saturday, 16 July 2005 04:57 (twenty years ago)

(Not that I've driven in years anyway, and I can't vouch for the quality of Citgo gas... but thanks for the links!)

donut ferry (donut), Saturday, 16 July 2005 04:58 (twenty years ago)

So, 7-11 and Nazis then. (this is the first time I think I'm actually going to smirk or laugh today, despite the awful, depressing news today, thinking about this 7-11/Nazi concept.)

I do remember in the 70s as a kid, Carls Jr. used to have awesome fries. they were slightly battered and were criss cut and were delicious.. now they're just generic average shoestring fried-frozen fries like other places.

I'm guessing the current IKEA manual design management used to work at the grill at Carls back in the 80s.

Yeah, everywhere except the Pacific Coast, they're Hardee's. I actually like Hardee's but sadly they've slowly disappeared from my area and the only one left in my city is waaay the fuck on the opposite side of town, three miles from the northernmost city bus stop (and to get there I'd have to walk on the sludgy side of U.S. 27, which has no sidewalk and then goes across an arm of Lake Jackson -- and I imagine I'd have to walk through that as well, so to go through that just to have some Hardee's is completely unreasonable).

Hardees seems to be trying an interesting tack in fast food, at least here in 4mory: huge breakfast trade, carrying over from pre-Karcher days, because their biscuits are AWESOME. They don't do much business at lunch and dinner, but maybe they don't have to, because their prices are very high and they keep payroll costs down with a skeleton crew. They're still hanging around here, whereas the local Burger King (in the Wal Mart parking lot, no less) closed up shop in April.

aqua teen hongro force (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 16 July 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

What should you do if you are #2?

Number 2 Burger King has problems. Greg Brenneman is the ninth CEO appointed by Burger King in the past 15 years.

According to the Wall Street Journal on July, 13, 2004:

“Mr. Brenneman's arrival will come as Burger King struggles to maintain its place as the second-largest hamburger company, after McDonald's Corp. Nearly 20% of Burger King's units are losing money, and three of its 10 largest franchisees have filed for bankruptcy-court protection in recent years. Some restaurant-industry analysts project the company may shutter as many as 1,000 units in the coming years. At the end of last year, it had 7,904 units. Burger King has been steadily closing units as Wendy's International Inc. opens them. Wendy's has 5,761."

So, what when wrong at Burger King? They didn’t do what a #2 brand should do.

A #2 brand should never try to emulate the leader. And that is exactly what Burger King has been doing for decades. McDonald’s strength is with kids who love Ronald McDonald, happy meals, burgers, fries and the playground. Burger King has copied McDonalds with kiddie meals, a magical Burger King and playgrounds. Only to have the kids still flock to the real thing, the original, McDonalds.

A strong #2 brand needs to position themselves as the opposite of the leader.

Listerine: bad-tasting mouthwash
# 2 Scope: good-tasting mouthwash

Home Depot: messy, male-oriented
# 2 Lowe’s: neat, female-oriented

Coke: older people
# 2 Pepsi: younger people

Microsoft: proprietary-software
# 2 Linux: open-source software

Wal-Mart: always low prices, messy
# 2 Target: cheap chic, wide aisles, neat

Mercedes-Benz: big, comfortable cars
#2 BMW: smaller, “driving machines

Republicans: conservative
# 2 Democrats: liberal
(Rank determined by which party is defending the White House)

One reason third political parties have never done well in America is because the two major parties are almost mirror images of each other. There’s literally no room for a third party.

Republicans are pro-business, Democrats are pro-labor. Republicans are pro-life, Democrats are pro-choice. Republicans are for less government, Democrats are for more government. Etc. Etc. Etc.

If Burger King were the mirror image of McDonald’s there would literally be no room for third-party hamburger chains. But in reality, third-part hamburger chains are flourishing.

Look last year’s per-unit sales of the top five burger chains:

In-N-Out Burger $1,976,900

McDonald’s $1,632,600

White Castle $1,308,300

Wendy’s $1,293,500

Burger King $ 987,100

All three third-party hamburger chains outsell Burger King by a wide margin. In-N-Out Burger by 100 percent. White Castle by 33 percent. And Wendy’s by 31 percent.

The hamburger chains that are doing well are the ones that are as different from McDonald’s as possible.

In-N-Out Burger from California, for example, only sells: hamburgers, cheeseburgers, French fries and drinks.

White Castle is focused on little square burgers affectionately known as “sliders.

Wendy’s is focused on older kids, a positioning strategy which would have been ideal for Burger King.

Good luck, Mr. Brennenman. You’re going to need it.

aqua teen hongro force (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 16 July 2005 15:48 (twenty years ago)

Interesting stuff. Hardee's/Carl's does do a good job positioning itself as the carnivorous glutton's alternative to McD's and Wendy's. The ad campaign is obnoxious, but there's no doubt that when I want to get my dead cow on, I go get a Thickburger. (Like yesterday, for example.) Also, low volume at the local Hardee's means they pretty much make every order of fries after they're ordered; I do like my fries hot-hot-hot instead of heatlamped, and I don't mind waiting.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Saturday, 16 July 2005 15:57 (twenty years ago)

as promised, i had carl's jr. for lunch today -- the fries were too salty and not very interesting in terms of flavor or texture, and the burger wasn't bad as a sandwich, but the patty was a little rubbery and the barbecue sauce was too sweet for my liking (that's just me though; i like mine really sharp and vinegary).

aqua teen hongro force (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 16 July 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

Republicans are for less government, Democrats are for more government.

I realize this comparison was just a slapdash rhetorical statement not meant to be presented as fact.. but it's more that, today, Republicans are for more goverment of one type, and Democrats are for more government of another type. End nitpick.

The Carl's Bacon Western Double Whatever and Super Star both >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> any McDonald's or Burger King burger.

I stopped going to BK when they fucked up their fries with that seasoning - before that I liked BK better than McDonald's.

Is this Citgo story really true? Owned by the people of Venezuela? It sounds very Snopesy to me.

Hardee's is definitely the place to hang in the morning. You'd think that you were hanging out a VFW with the number of senior citizens lounging around, sipping coffee and swapping shit. I attribute one reason why Hardee's is so booming in the mornings: Complimentary newspapers.

(I found this post on Common Dreams from Reasoner.)

The U.S. lower house of Congress passed an amendment Wednesday “to initiate radio and television broadcasts that will provide a consistently accurate, objective, and comprehensive source of news to Venezuela” to counter Telesur’s “anti-Americanism,” in the words of Republican Rep. Connie Mack of Florida, who sponsored the amendment.

This seems to be paralleling the rise of Castro, but without the disgruntled ex-pat community in the USA pushing it. Fucking Floridians.
