Most people who post regularly on ILE are considerably more irritating than any anonymous troll ever could be

no, I would say not. Even those ppl who post regularly who have a bit of a rep for being irritating I can generally just regard as funny or say "Silly boy" or "Silly girl" to myself about and that's the sum of it. However, I often type something out and think "Hah that will piss people off, better not post it". And so I don't. And maybe these things are connected.

From blogography.com:

Playing in the park is "The Shore" and "Ari Hest" - both of which I had never heard of before. Amazing, amazing stuff. I go buy CDs from both groups, because the possibility of not finding them on the iTunes Music Store is too much to bear (yup, they're both there... which means I paid $8 more than I had to for CDs I'll end up tossing in the garbage after I've ripped them). I cannot recommend these astounding musicians highly enough. "The Shore" is kind of an inspired blend of Oasis and The Verve. "Ari Hest" has lush vocals that pierce your very soul...

*shudder*

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Sunday, 17 July 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

Wait... really? My very soul?

what, you didn't like him talking about going to all those different Hard Rock Cafes?

of course, i myself was guilty of this once upon a time, only i was fucking 16, had never heard of these weird bands called "Black Flag" or "the Buzzcocks", and was completely clueless about a lot of things.

I'm confused, aren't most an.trolls regular posters? So uh, yeah, of course they are irritating. We all are.

pepektheassassin (pepektheassassin), Monday, 18 July 2005 12:42 (twenty years ago)

I posted a completely asinine (sp?) comment the other day and someone called me a troll. Seeing as I'm completely new to posting comments on the web, I really have no idea what a troll is. I'm guessing it's not a nice word. I'm more than willing to admit my ignorance, would anyone be willing to shed some light on the subject for me and let me know the meaning of the word troll? Thx.

another2cents, Monday, 18 July 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

i means someone new to the web who makes asinine comments, obv.

Tigerstyle Shamanic Vision Quester (sexyDancer), Monday, 18 July 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

It's something like: a person who shows up in a place like this and posts unpleasant and provocative things. Professed idea: intellectual gadfly. Actuality: hopeless loser who can do this sort of shit online because they don't get punched that way.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 18 July 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

(xpost to sexyDancer: Hahahaha!)

A real troll is someone who posts provactive or absurd statements that they may or may not actually agree with in order to generate responses from people who should really know better. ILX uses to mean "someone who posts something I disagree with".

For example, the ILM thread about how people who claim to be music fans should own turntables if they wanted to be taken seriously was textbook trolling.

aka WUM (or Wind Up Merchant).

I thought 'troll' referred to the unhinged people that turn up here every now and then starting dozens of threads filled with rambling and insane abuse which clog up the new answers page for an hour or so until the moderators delete them.

Well alrighty then...troll is definitely not a good thing. Gotcha. How long does it take to recover from being labelled a troll? I mean, am I doomed forever to trollhood?

another2cents (another2cents), Monday, 18 July 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

Wait, which one are you again?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 18 July 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

(x-post) the trick is to have different personae which express your antisocial side(s). For example, for normal friendly interaction, I am affable moley, known for my bad puns and generally pleasant demeanour. But, undercover, I am Bernard Badger, hater of humans, not to mention black metal dude Janne Karlsson and, most recently, Hendrikus Stamp from the Leipzig Association of Psychoanalysis.

I would have to resent the suggestion that anonymous posters are worse then regulars as I hope to be a regular in the near future.

egotripper, Monday, 18 July 2005 21:11 (twenty years ago)

you need an "in"

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 18 July 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

gotta prove your worth to ILX first, man. head over to another music site, go to one of their FAPS, and let the hollow points commence to POP POP POP. yeah.

Gear!, that Badger site is pure genius. Do they ever stop?

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Monday, 18 July 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

all this "hi I'm new here! I like Bright Eyes and Jay-Z!" introductory type shit is lame. it should be, "Hi I'm new here! And I wiped out a Clapton AOL board!"

xpost I don't think so. It's totally mesmerizing

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 18 July 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

NO, THIS IS NOT A TROLL. Momus would be closer to the true meaning of a troll, as would maybe trife, or even Geir Hongro. People who say purposefully inflammatory things to supposedly stir debate (but start shitfights instead usually).

Someone who is just posting reams of images, or being unhinged or whatver might be a flooder, or a spammer, or more likely just a twat. But not a troll, if we be proper about it.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 18 July 2005 23:56 (twenty years ago)

Goddammit Yes!! People who we don't agree with = Trolls.

Troll.

none of those people are trolls, however i don't think that the first two are above a little trolling here and there

Scream! Scrovula, Scream! (noodle vague), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 00:24 (twenty years ago)

I am not saying momus is a troll because I dont agree with him (hell, I do some of the time). He does write provocative things knowing FULL WELL the reaction he'll get from it - he does this on LJ as well.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 00:25 (twenty years ago)

By which I mean, as Jim better phrased it, they indulge IN trolling, but the word "troll" as a perjorative's become a bit misused and misunderstood.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 00:25 (twenty years ago)

Dammit, he should only write things he knows everybody will agree with.

Scream! Scrovula, Scream! (noodle vague), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 00:26 (twenty years ago)

i heard something the other day about fanta being the nazi soda.
