AaronK (AaronK), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 03:07 (twenty years ago)

both dark. and gigantic. keep em comin'.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 03:09 (twenty years ago)

yeah, the dark and stormy!! add lots of lime though, and shake it up in a cocktail shaker. GREAT drink (the ginger beer is what makes it awesome, i totally agree)

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 03:10 (twenty years ago)

one thing you shouldnt overlook is plantains

007 (thoia), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 03:13 (twenty years ago)

i'm constantly overlooking plantains, it's one of my greatest failings.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 03:14 (twenty years ago)

sweet and savory!

007 (thoia), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 03:19 (twenty years ago)

I wish most (any?) bars made dark & stormies b/c that's all I want to drink for the rest of the summer. I'll have to bring my own thermos.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 03:36 (twenty years ago)

Dark Daiquiri

50ml Myers's Rum (it's Dark)

20ml Suger Syrup (simple sugar recipe)

12.5ml Freshly Squeezed Lime Juice

4 Fresh Mint Leaves

Shake Ingredients vigorously with ice and strain into a frozen Martini glass

Wiggy (Wiggy), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 05:36 (twenty years ago)

yowza!
Shark's Mai Tai recipe

1 part Bacardi® dark rum
1 part Bacardi® light rum
3 parts Rose's® sweet and sour mix
2 shots Rose's® grenadine syrup
1 shot Bacardi® 151 rum
3 parts ice

Mix all ingedients in a blender except for the 151 rum. Pour into a cocktail glass with ice to about 1 inch below the rim. Add the shot of 151 but do not mix. Let settle for about 1 minute before serving.

21% (42 proof)
Serve in: Cocktail Glass

Wiggy (Wiggy), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 05:38 (twenty years ago)

Chocolate Cocktail - Into a shaker 2/3 filled with ice add a small (25ml) shot of each of the following - white rum dark rum, crème de menthe and single cream. Add an egg white, shake and strain into an ice-filled highball. Float a layer of dark rum on top, and sprinkle with cocoa powder.
Eh, can ya tell I love me cocktails?

Wiggy (Wiggy), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 05:40 (twenty years ago)

Zombie - A particularly dangerous drink, invented by Don "The Beachcomber" Beach. Into a shaker 2/3 filled with ice add a large (50ml) shot of golden rum (Havana Club 3 year old perhaps), a small (25ml) shot of dark rum (Myers possibly), a small shot of apricot brandy, a dash of sugar syrup, a small shot of lime juice and a large shot of pineapple juice. Shake and strain into a hurricane glass filled with ice, and float a layer of 151 proof rum on top.
Though you say you have a coupke of bottels if the dark stuff, methinks you'll be able to improvise a wee bit? Good Wishes and Cheers!

Wiggy (Wiggy), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 05:41 (twenty years ago)

OMG, the Sat. before the Oxford walk Kate, emsk, MarkH and I demolished 2 bottles of rum with grog - 2 measures of rum, 1 measure of lime cordial and a slice of lemon. It was Kate's idea (she's been reading a pirate book recently, or something) and it was great, if terrifying how easy it was going down. Goes fantastic with curry.

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 06:17 (twenty years ago)

Grog! Grog grog grog!!!

Though JB's recipe there would have mutiny in a moment. Properly it is equal measures of rum and Roses lime cordial, a drop of actual lime juice, and a slice of lemon. (The girly version also involves a further measure of orange juice or water, but I think the manly seaman version is better.)

(My book is not actually about pirates but about the Royal Navy and Ships of the Lime I mean Line. Oh yes. I am even wearing my sailor suit today.)

Rum, Sodomy and the LAN (kate), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 06:43 (twenty years ago)

Not particularly ridiculous, but RUM'N'COKE FLOAT is excellent. It's best to make one in a measuring jug rather than a glass, and the ice cream tends to create a kind of industrial waste foam-scum thing, which looks disgusting but is mmm-mmm delicious.

emil.y (emil.y), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 09:49 (twenty years ago)

Ahoy, Mrs. Captain Anderson. Be so good as to give us the name of that book you're reading?

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 10:02 (twenty years ago)

To The Ends Of The Earth by William Golding.

I blame the BBC.

Mrs. Captain Anderson (kate), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 10:59 (twenty years ago)

last night i had pineapple and ice blended with fresh mint, which i think would be excellent with a big glug of rum thrown in.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 11:09 (twenty years ago)

Jared Harris looks a bit like Ray the Midget from Ministry of Mayhem

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 11:10 (twenty years ago)

Picture please?

Rum, Sodomy and the LAN (kate), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 11:11 (twenty years ago)

Bah, I missed Part Two of the telly version of To The Ends Of The Earth because I was stuck on a railway station platform somewhere in Hertfordshire.

(the first part was bloody good, though)

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 11:16 (twenty years ago)

I have just entered the competition to win a DVD, even though it will not be out until the autumn. (I cheated a bit because I had just read the book.)

Rum, Sodomy and the LAN (kate), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 11:17 (twenty years ago)

Er, can't find one. You'll have to watch it on Saturday Morning (ITV). It's worth watching anyway, especially if you're very hungover.

xpost

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 11:17 (twenty years ago)

Is he as lovely as Captain Anderson?

(Probably not, I'm guessing, and it's a veiled insult. Harumph.)

Rum, Sodomy and the LAN (kate), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 11:20 (twenty years ago)

How does the book compare to the TV series?

(sorry for the complete thread-derail here)

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 11:21 (twenty years ago)

The book is much, much better. OK, the series is very good, but the book goes much deeper and answers many of the confusing details which I was missing. It goes much more into both details of the ship and navigation (in fact makes rather a joke of Annoying Poshboy's fascination with naval terminology to the point where he makes himself stop) - and also, to me more fascinating - with the prejudices and class/rank strictures which create the tension of story.

Rum, Sodomy and the LAN (kate), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 11:28 (twenty years ago)

I had a feeling that the book would be better - after all, wasn't it a trilogy originally? You can hardly compress a novel into an hour of TV without losing a lot of the good texture.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 11:30 (twenty years ago)

(i'll look out for a copy)

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 11:30 (twenty years ago)

...and indeed, some of the most important points of plot!

(e.g. why Deverell hates Anderson, what with the Captain's Deep Dark Secret, after all.)

((We should really move to the appropriate thread : HORNBLOWER if we are going to continue this conversation as I would very much like to.))

Rum, Sodomy and the LAN (kate), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 11:31 (twenty years ago)

at least momus and brian sewell's lovechild stars

grosvenor lucrece, Tuesday, 19 July 2005 11:32 (twenty years ago)

We should really stop derailing and go here:

Lt Hornblower BLOWS MY HORN

Rum, Sodomy and the LAN (kate), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 11:36 (twenty years ago)

Royal Rumble - Goldschlager + Rum

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 11:47 (twenty years ago)

(Probably not, I'm guessing, and it's a veiled insult. Harumph.)

No insult intended, it's just an observation.

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 11:55 (twenty years ago)

Well, I suppose it's better than Mark S comparing my lovely Captain to Omnipotent Baby. :-(

Rum, Sodomy and the LAN (kate), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 11:56 (twenty years ago)

Get a friend to send you some Faygo Rock and Rye and have a R-cubed. The preservatives in the Faygo mask the taste and make for great chugging.

scrimshaw (scrimshaw1837), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

Kool-Aid, but use rum instead of water.

Tigerstyle Shamanic Vision Quester (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

fourteen years pass...

Straight up now tell me, who cares, just add some coke and get drunk

nathom, Friday, 27 December 2019 22:55 (six years ago)

that melon flavored Malibu actually tastes pretty good with sparkling water

frogbs, Friday, 27 December 2019 22:55 (six years ago)

like 3 parts flavored seltzer, 1 part 50/50, then a shot of rum
