So yeah! I am here, and in a hostel on 2nd and Pine. Are you?

Things I am trying to find: Juggling balls, a small cheap fm radio, ilxors, Go-ish type cafes, artsy type cafes. that sort of thing. Are these findable, at all? What else should I do?

Go to Pike Place Market, esp. the downstairs shops. Just walk west on Pine.

Juggling balls and cheap fm radio? Are you a terrorist of some sort?

Go catch a 49 bus at the Pine & 2nd stop and ride it up to Pine and Harvard on Capitol Hill. This bus will also go through the University District. Much fun is available on the Hill.

Or, walk over to the stop at Pike & 4th and catch the 10 to the same location. This route is more direct.

The most Go-ish cafe (meaning a place you'd likely find people playing "Go") is probably on the very west end of Capitol Hill called Bauhaus Coffee. It's on Pine street and Melrose Ave... you can grab a bus off Pike St. (which will usually turn at Pine at Bellevue Ave., a block up from Melrose.), or you can walk up Pine yourself. They also have free wi-fi there, etc. Very much a goth-geek caffeine palace. Also, best coffee in town too.

(Although the rivethead goth-geek equivalent is a few blocks up Pine from Bauhaus coffee called Auriface, across the street.. which is right next to Musicwerks.. which is a goth-industrial record store.)

If you want to bus it, go over to Pike, just west of 4th. Most Capitol Hill buses stop there. If you're really cheap, you can exit from the Ride Free area around the convention center, and walk it from there... or just make sure you have $1.25 handy (or $1.50 if you're doing this during rush hour.)

There are cities in which the Fremont Troll and Lenin's Head would be covered by a patina of spraypaint several inches thick.

Wow. In the hippie capitol of the world, and no place to find juggling balls...

Boyo G! I got the package and I crowed about the Psmith number on the ILB Wodehouse thread even though one of the glasses didn't survive the trip (I had to give it a burial at the office), and I do love your enclosure note. If someone I counted a friend had to disappoint me and reject my hospitality, I'd still count myself lucky to receive such a peace offering. Thank you ever so kindly.

There's a magic store in the Pike Place market, you might find your balls there.

I walked up university way and got adopted by squatter/travellers, today! I got juggling balls, too. This is a great town. Tomorrow I will totally check out places on this thread - go cafes!

Laurel I wld have loved to accept yr hospitality!:( I only got into NY at 10.30 and e-mail didn't seem sufficient apology. I will do better next time, promise!

the only thing missing from the troll pic is the disembodied hand holding the can of Frijoles Negros.

They're renaming that street underneath the Aurora Bridge to Fremont Troll Ave, btw. It used to be called Aurora Ave N., just like the bridge above, but one too many confused drivers and pizza deliveries forced the proposal for the street rename, i guess.

oh yeah, if you want to score a bunch of bongs TOBACCO ACCESSORY GLASS PIPES, there are a bunch of stores along 36th st. in Fremont as well. You'll probably see some guy making balanced stone structures. There's also a hi-fi boat sushi place that plays anime, a specialty pet store, and more rare post-punk records for sale (at Jive Time, the Antique Mall, and the Sonic Boom Vinyl Annex) than you can swarthily stagger to after three Guinnesses..
