**Post good websites for relief for victims of Katrina** -- Also, PLEASE prevent stupid-ass family/friends from donating to fake Katrina relief scam sites

I'm starting this because

a) the Katrina aftermath thread is massive.

b) I got an emergency call this morning (that woke me up, on already little sleep) from my mom (who is perfectly safe in L.A.) this morning completely freaking out, because she realized she "donated" to a fake site feigning as a Katrina disaster relief site via a spam e-mail -- much in the form of those "Your PayPal/eBay/InsertBankHere account is about to be suspended" scams. She only realized it was a scam when she got an email titled "URGENT: THE NIGGERS ARE LOOTING NEW ORLEANS! THE N.O. POLICE NEED YOUR ASSISTANCE!" which looked exactly the same as the previous one. My mom is still "very new" to the internet thing, you see. She's also extremely sheltered and gullible; and I needn't list all the things wrong with that last email subject line.

Anyway, as annoying as this is for my mom, I hated having to both hold her hand on the procedures for reporting such things -- *again* after she fell for something similar once before -- and also having to hear her say "This is what happens. You open your heart to donate to a good cause, and you get screwed in the end. Now I can't donate at all, because I might not HAVE any money to donate!!".

As much I love my mom, sometimes I wish I could send an e-slap. I didn't mention the "Some of these victims apparently don't appreciate the help when they're shooting the police" bile, did I?

Anyway, rant over.

Please post links to legit relief/donation sites for Katrina victims, please. Or links to links, better yet. This might be a good thing to send around to friends after enough are posted, so that we can prevent people from doing and saying what my mom did this morning. (Sadly, it will be a while before I can forgive my mom for some of the things she said this morning, but anyway..)

Uh, donut, I understand your passion but there's a separate relief thread already.

Maybe someone at a legit disaster relief service was just having fun with her with the second email. Those jokers in disaster relief.
