Oh wait!

http://www.chicagotheband.com/images/albums/Chicago14-200x200.jpg

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 9 September 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

thank god. the last one was getting exhausting!

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:01 (twenty years ago)

Whoah, that's one's actually pretty cool, in a non-ironic way.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:01 (twenty years ago)

that really doesn't make much sense. oh well.

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:01 (twenty years ago)

Part of me wonders if any other region-specific ILXors have similar threads. Then I look at some of those London/UK ones and think that we aren't so bad.

dan m (OutDatWay), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

hey has anyone here ever had COGNAC or BRANDY before? i never have, and i am dying to drink from a classy brandy snifter. what does it taste like?

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it is cool! I've never seen that one before.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

There are also the mongrel/sheepfoxor threads, which are for Aussies/Kiwis. I have never read any of them, I am afeared.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

We usually have brandy at our place, especially in the winter, to make HOT TODDIES with. I think we have some in our liquor cupboard right now. Never drank it straight though.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

mandee, it's worth it to get a nice one b/c bad brandy is FUCKING AWFUL. Also: don't fall prey to silly flavors of Brandy. It is only to make nasty taste nastier. I liked cognac when I tried it. I think I had a pretty nice one, but still.

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:06 (twenty years ago)

Oh man, I had some goood/baaad experiences with Blackberry Brandy back in the day. Goood while you're drinking, baaad when you stop.

dan m (OutDatWay), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:08 (twenty years ago)

There is a distillery in Portland called Clear Creek that makes excellent brandies out of pears and apples and grapes and even douglas fir needles. My friend runs the tasting room at the distillery. I don't know if Oregon brandy can be found here in Chicago, but look for it.

Listen, is there a decent restaurant anywhere near the Art Institute? I can't stand that Cosi place and Bennigans is out of the question. Barf.

Markovitz, Friday, 9 September 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

I have had a lot of GHETTO COGNAC, like Alize and Hypnotiq and Hennessey, but not very much FANCY COGNAC.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

I kind of want to develop old man habits, like buying really expensive scotch to sip before bedtime.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

wait

alize is cognac!?!?

okay ive totally had that, i guess i have had cognac

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

dan m., there is THE DENVER THREAD

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

What kind of restaurant are you looking for, Markovitz? Something quick and cheap? I work a block away from there, so I know most of the area eateries.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

Yeah Mandee, it's flavored cognac.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

there's a toss up about the thai place. My Thai?! I think it's okay (but only okay), jaymc has hated it & then found it tolerable.

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

Marko is a foodie.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

Right. Actually, the red curry was pretty good. It's in DePaul Center, on the southeast corner of Jackson and State.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

i love coffee with brandy in it. LOVE IT.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah, me too! I forgot about that.

Coffee with alcohol is pretty much my favorite thing ever, but it's hard to find the right time to drink it.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

you're right. i like it after a meal or pretty much anytime. right now would be great.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

A nice restaurant for a sit-down meal around the Art Institute = Russian Tea Room.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

ooh. i've never been there - it's a little intimidating since all i've ever seen of that place are photos of vodka shots lined up. tons of them, all in a row. the food is good?

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

I've tried the Pho place with the green awning. Yawn. I've also braved the tourists at Park Grill. Never again. I haven't tried the cafe at the museum, maybe it will be okay.

I'd like to find a place that is like cafe lula - a place with good healthy food that's mostly for regulars. But this seems impossible in this part of town. And yes, I am a bit of a foodie, so the sub shops and greasy spoons don't generally make me happy.

Markovitz, Friday, 9 September 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

(xpost) Yes, it's very good. And there is a surprising amount of vegetarian fare, given the Eastern European cuisine. I had a bowl of borscht and some vegetable dish I can't remember.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

If you go to My Thai RIGHT NOW you can see me sitting in the window of the DePaul center, reading about labor law.

The pho place with the green awning is CRAP. There's a decent coffee shop on printer's row called Gourmand with pretty tasty food but that's closer to the Roosevelt stop and is a bit of a hike.

I have tried to hard to like brandy and cognac and scotch and they just made me shudder with revulsion.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

a place with good healthy food that's mostly for regulars.

I'm pretty sure that this place does not exist downtown.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

But this seems impossible in this part of town.

Yeah, the Loop is kind of weird for stuff like that. Before I worked here, I never really had much occasion to come down here for anything.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

There's a decent coffee shop on printer's row called Gourmand with pretty tasty food but that's closer to the Roosevelt stop and is a bit of a hike.

Oh yeah, that place is good. I saw B3n Bil0w there once.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

I have a confession:

I've only tried one brandy & it was a $3 bottle of "Ginger Flavored Brandy." I don't need to go over how bad it was.

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

I have always wanted to try Russian Tea Room but their afternoon Tea is over $15, I think, and no one ever wants to share it with me.
I don't like brandy at all.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

When I worked in the Loop I was partial to S0pprafina, the Ven1ce Cafe across from the Sears T0wer, and a little noodle shop whose name escapes me.

But, as a bit of a foodie myself, I have to say that anything you're going to find interesting in the Loop is going to co$t you.

dan m (OutDatWay), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

oh! new thread.

Ok, I have scoured my blog archives. There is no longer any mention of work, girlfriends, kittens, Ben Affleck, or anything else. It's mostly now about photography and web design.

And Chicago. It's also about Chicago. But nothing personal. I think it will be ok. And it's so pretty!

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

OH NOES: Sarah and I can't decide what to do tonight!
Some ideas:
1. Xiu Xiu/Frog Eyes/Yellow Swans at Bottom Lounge
2. The Makers/The Changes at Subterranean
3. That new play called "Poor Man's Amos"
4. Going to see a terrible all-girl coverband called Catfight at CANS
5. Being boring and checking out a movie
6. Going over Niagara Falls in a barrel

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

I initially read that as "pornography and web design", which seemed idealistic but misguided.

xpost

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

SO DID I!!!

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

(Oh, BTW, the talk of Jessa does not offend me. I like her, and in fact I think she's great and sharp as a tack and pretty awesome. But the word "warm" does not spring to mind.)

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

(The word "prickly" does.)

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

Wait. Why are you saying this?

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

Dear Nick,

Please tell me you are kidding about Cans.

Rapturously yours,
Dan

dan m (OutDatWay), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:32 (twenty years ago)

CANS was Sarah's suggestion, I'm guessing because she likes girl rock bands. But no, we are not really going to go there.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

My neck is not thick enough for us to go to CANS.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

I have a slender, feminine neck; some say it's "swan-like."

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

I am coming out of the woodwork to say: I'm Ginny, I live in Chicago, and your best bet for buying Clear Creek is at Sam's. You may also be able to get it at Binny's & Schaefer's. Lula Cafe sells it.

ginny (ginny), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:35 (twenty years ago)

Oh good. I didn't want to have to say "and I thought you guys were cool!"
xpost

dan m (OutDatWay), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

Are you the ginny that I know? Or a different ginny?

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

by the way -- jenny -- i saw "emily rose" and it was SCARY!

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 15 September 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

it wasn't a great movie or anything, but i enjoyed it. i give it a thumbs up.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 15 September 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

RE: That Roe v. Wade joke...

A colleague just came into the office and told the joke like this:

What's GWB's opinion on Roe v. Wade?
None, he doesn't care what happens to Mississippi.

The audience for the joke just looked at him, so I helpfully said that I had heard that joke with a different punch line, and then did for them what Jeff did for me, which was say, "You know 'row' (pantomime rowing) and 'wade' like 'wade out of the floodwaters'?"

So the moral of the story is that those of us who failed to get the pun are not alone in our dumbness, but we are at least smrt enough to ask for clarification instead of just telling the joke totally differently. Oy.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 15 September 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

Nah. I think youse are all smarties & think about it too much.

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 15 September 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

Amanda! Roger Ebert and that other dude gave it two thumbs up! I decided last night at dinner that I wanted to see it, but would probably have to wait for the DVD just because I don't know if I'll have a chance to see it before it leaves theaters.

I'm glad you liked it! Now I am really looking forward to it.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 15 September 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

I thought it was really entertaining. Compared to most of the tripe that passes for horror movies these days, it was tense and scary and had a plot. I screamed once and grabbed Dan's arm the entire time. I don't normally scream AND grab, but it was scary.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 15 September 2005 16:58 (twenty years ago)

that's great. that's the only reason i'll see horror flicks. i wonder if it's playing in minneapolis this weekend? why can't it be friday?!?!? i wanna see my bf & eat galactic.

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 15 September 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

Speaking of scary, RIP Robert Wise. He directed two of my favorite movies; The Haunting and The Sound of Music.

I know. You probably find me and SoM insufferably cheesy. Guess what. I don't care! I love it anyway.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 15 September 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

I'm wary of Emily Rose, because I can't quite believe anyone would make a movie that argues that just because a priest killed a very mentally ill girl by denying her medication and performing a fucking exorcism instead, he doesn't deserve to go to jail because, you know, EVIL EXISTS. Sorry, but I cannot hang with that.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 15 September 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

but demons are real. they are standing still.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 15 September 2005 17:24 (twenty years ago)

Confession: I have never seen the Sound of Music.

Don't hate me.

xpost: Kenan, I shared almost those exact same misgivings (although less eloquently) with Jeff yesterday. I still want to see it because even if evil doesn't exist in real life, it TOTALLY exists in horror movies.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 15 September 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

xpost: 100000000000 points to Amanda for GBV lyric reference!

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 15 September 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

I've lost all my money to a 300 pound ghost

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 15 September 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

I would be glad to hold your hand and usher you into the beautiful musical world of the Von Trapp Family Singers, but something tells me you might hate it. Lots of my friends hate it. I can deal with that.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 15 September 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

Someone tell me why I do the things that I don't want to do - when you're around me I'm somebody else

Man, GBV was E.M.O.

dan m (OutDatWay), Thursday, 15 September 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

Actually, Amanda, I really want to see it. It's just a bizarre twist of fate that I haven't yet. I tend to love musicals. If the Musicbox ever does a Grease sing-along, I am there. In costume.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 15 September 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

Lots of my friends hate it. I can deal with that.

I'm a sucker for a good musical, don't get me wrong. TSOM is not a good musical.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 15 September 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

Not enough innuendo, for one thing. Where's a song like "Girl Who Can't Say No"? It needs more of those.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 15 September 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

I like watching scary movies, but I'm not 100% pro-gorey movies. For example, I loved The Game and The Ring.

I watched the Sound of Music on tv every year growing up. My Dad would fold out our couch and pop a million buckets of popcorn. I would always fall asleep at some point though and then wake up to the credits music. My favorite part was the "I am Sixteen, Going on Seventeen" scene.

Kittens Licking Cakes (coco), Thursday, 15 September 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sure that I've ever seen Sound of Music either, but I know most of the songs. I'm not really interested in Emily Rose.

I do want to drag Maddie to a movie this weekend, even if it might be semi-crap like Sky High or Red Eye or Skeleton Key.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 15 September 2005 17:39 (twenty years ago)

Man, GBV was E.M.O.

dude, that's so not true. that's like the one of three songs they have with lyrics that make any sense at all in the terrestrial world.

as for SoM, i confess that i like ALL of the songs, i cry every time i hear "edelweiss" and i even like that cheesy lovesong she sings with the Baron. at my wedding the closing music, as we were walking out of the church, was the PROCESSIONAL from SoM. it was GLORIOUS!

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 15 September 2005 17:39 (twenty years ago)

Treacly, sez I.

Favorite Rogers and Hammerstein moment -- "Poor Judd Is Dead" from Oklahoma!

"His fingernails have never been so clean."

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 15 September 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

I know it's treacly. I don't care though. Don't you like things that are shitty just because you like them?

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 15 September 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

If I like it, I can make the argument that's it's not shitty. I might even convince someone of it. On a good day.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 15 September 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

I want to see Oklahoma again. Also, I never saw The Umbrellas of Chaburg or whatever the hell it's called.

Kittens Licking Cakes (coco), Thursday, 15 September 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

The Umbrellas of Schaumberg.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 15 September 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

See, I'm not gonna argue with people. I'm just content to like what I like and if I don't win any converts, so be it. Although, for the Sound of Music, I will say that it's probably a combination of nostalgia and optimism and love for Julie Andrews, who sort of looks like my mom. I guess I don't really care why I like it. I just do. Also, my best friend growing up was named Liesl.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 15 September 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

ok, ok i won't talk about the Sound of Music anymore.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 15 September 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

I think I would like it more if John Coltrane had done arrangements of the rest of the soundtrack.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 15 September 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

The (original) Alfie soundtrack is really good -- that was Sonny Rollins?

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 15 September 2005 18:15 (twenty years ago)

Yep!

I swing back and forth between listening to lots of jazz and being bored with/sick of it. Right now I'm in a jazz phase. Kenan, did you see the poll on ILM?

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 15 September 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

Nope. Ain't been there in months.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 15 September 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

Dude! That Sonny Sharrock album was in my dream last night!

The universe is trying to tell me to listen to it again.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 15 September 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

I also like the SoM. I was practically raised on it. Love it. I haven't seen it in years, but whenever the last time I saw it I felt like it had a new ending. That's because I'd always fall asleep around the same time when I was a kid . . . it was like seeing a whole new movie!!

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 15 September 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

You probably should then, don't fuck with the universe. I haven't listened to it in a long time, but I have been watching Space Ghost.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 15 September 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

DUDES, we need to have a movie party sometime.

Also, what is everyone doing for Halloween? We only have a month and a half to plan!

Kittens Licking Cakes (coco), Thursday, 15 September 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

good question!! i wanted dan and i to wear drab grey robes and be druids for halloween, but who knows if that will happen.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 15 September 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

Come to Madison! We're going to be zombies.

(you guys know how we roll for Halloween up here, right?)

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 15 September 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

no...how do you roll?

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 15 September 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

Oooooh Madison is crazy on Haloween. Not quite as crazy as Detriot though...

dan m (OutDatWay), Thursday, 15 September 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

we seriously need a new thread. we're thousandaires here.

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 15 September 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

I'm outta here at 3 -- it's my early school-day. See you tomorrow, beg, steal or borrow.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 15 September 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

Somebody start a new thread and then I will explain Halloween in Madison.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 15 September 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

(I'm not qualified to do so because I don't actually live in Chicago. They're very strict about this sort of thing.)

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 15 September 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

I don't know how to do it.

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 15 September 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

if someone tells me how to do it, i will do it.

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 15 September 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

Just go up to the top of the screen and click on 'Ask a Question'. And here, take this with you:

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 15 September 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

I want to spend Halloween in Madison!

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Thursday, 15 September 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

But how do i do the trackback?!

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 15 September 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

Chicago's Greatest Hits, vol. 2
