start a thread "Who up in this bitch wants an I Love Games" board petitioning for one. say why anyone would post there rather than elsewhere, and what sort of threads you expect. do you want "games" to mean any games in general or some specific genres. etc. let the mods see who responds

-- Britain's Obtusest Shepherd, September 16th, 2005 8:21 AM.

Ok, I'm proposing a video game board. I think that enough of us on here play 'em to where we could support a regular board on the topic. All video games would be fine: console, computer, cellphone, arcade, retro, etc. All genres, too.

And also pinball, lamentably moribund as that industry currently is right now...

Bitch about horrid character designs from Tetsuya Nomura, talk about driving tanks in GTA:SA into swimming pools, reminisce over "Impossible Mission" or "Nord Or Bert Couldn't Make Heads or Tails of It", go on about the Spectrum or your cousin's C64, talk about the different prices for "Tapper" vs "Root Beer Tapper" arcade machines, post links to mods allowing CJ to have coffee with the stripper vamps from VTM: Bloodlines, etc.

You get the idea.

Also, I think "I Love Games"/"ILG" would fit our naming system better than an ILVG, plus it would be more inclusive name for pinball, etc.

What say you? Would you read this regularly? Is ILG a good name, or can we improve on it?

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 16 September 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

Pinball is awesome, but I don't know what's to talk about.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 16 September 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

I vote yay re: ILG.

Laura H. (laurah), Friday, 16 September 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

ILE for I love entertainment is taken
ILM for I love masturbation is taken
so ILG sounds good.
And yes, I'd definitely post and read.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 16 September 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

ILE for I love entertainment is taken
ILM for I love masturbation

shockingly appropiate, one thinks

WHAT ABOUT SPORTS VIDEO GAMES? ANYONE PLAY THEM?

What about tile-laying games? Anyone play them? I would post about that.

WHAT ABOUT SPORTS VIDEO GAMES? ANYONE PLAY THEM?

What about tile-laying games? Anyone play them? I would post about that.

what, you mean like board games? Hell, why not? We can have a thread for how you could properly use Stratego pieces to annoy your siblings as well as how the Stratego console version sucked dick due to the lack of that...

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 16 September 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

i guess no one has ever heard of or played Carcassonne? i'm not talking about board games that only involve moving little pieces around. i guess if no one else plays these games i would be better off playing the game instead of talking to myself on I Love Geekery.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 16 September 2005 15:15 (twenty years ago)

While I'm not in favour of usenet-style mountains of red tape about creating new boards, I do think that it should need more than one thread on the subject in New Answers.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 16 September 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

i want to learn carcasonne, i'm told i would really like it.

Juulia (julesbdules), Friday, 16 September 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

it is pretty fun. i like it, at least, and i'm not all that into "gaming."

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 16 September 2005 15:19 (twenty years ago)

"enough people" meaning 5 who would actually read and post to threads they started themselves. STOP TRYING TO COMPARTMENTALIZE

http://ilx.p3r.net/newanswers.php?board=12

so my point is basically I wouldn't visit. It's cool. Not that I have time to play games anyway, I just read and talk about them in my spare cycles at work. Do what you want.

TOMBOT, Friday, 16 September 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

Lupton Pitman (Chris V), Friday, 16 September 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

How about 3 threads?

ILC spawned from an average of .0054 threads on NA per day.

Leeeeeeeee (Leee), Friday, 16 September 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

no need for more than one thread Andrew, in fact it would help to confine yay-saying and nay-saying here.

obv you need to decide if you will be making this a reg-only board or not :-)

if anyone stomps on here yelling "OMG THIS IS A DONE DEAL WHY ARE WE EVEN DISCUSSING THIS FASCIST POLICE STATE" i will kill them with guns.

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Friday, 16 September 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

OMG THIS IS KIM DEAL WHY ARE WE EVEN DISCUSSING THIS FACIST POLICE STING

I think that ghettoizing games on its own separate board will be in the long run a good thing, as it will eventually generate a lot of (intra-ILX) traffic (e.g. posts, threads, geekery).

Leeeeeeeee (Leee), Friday, 16 September 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

Yeah Leeee is right - in fact lack of discussion on ILE is a GOOD reason to make a new board, if you think you've got a nascent community who could populate it and would write more about games on ILG than on ILE. That's what made ILComics good - it's not that there weren't comics threads on ILE, it's that there wasn't a place they could grow and flourish and get a kind of identity. And now it's there it's turned into quite a good place for people who don't read many comics to visit and ask stuff too.

Whereas with film, it seems to me like there were lots of film threads, and ILF was set up to have a certain KIND of film threads.

So that's the basic question, for me: do you want this because you want to encourage more talk about games, or because you want somewhere for the hardcore gamers to hang out?

Tom (Groke), Friday, 16 September 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

If you make a separate I Love Games board AND make it reg-only I will hate you to the grave. I'm dead fucking serious.

TOMBOT, Friday, 16 September 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

Ewing OTM, and option 2 is the answer I'm afraid of

TOMBOT, Friday, 16 September 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

I don't see how ILG couldn't accommodate both options at once.

Leeeeeeeee (Leee), Friday, 16 September 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it could! The #2 option is a subset of the #1 option really.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 16 September 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

I would deffo make an effort to post to an ILG. (I used to post to a few games forums, until I realised how deeply, deeply awful they all are.) I do get the feeling that the current threads get lost in the usual ILE noise to an extent. don't make it reg-only though!

deaf leopard (haitch), Friday, 16 September 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

I don't see why ILE is such an awful place to start more threads about games.

TOMBOT, Friday, 16 September 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

I don't see why ILE is such an awful place to start more threads about comics or baseball, but the theory of the pointless proliferation of satellite boards is totally abstract and not terribly well-supported by physical evidence, as opposed to the actual implementation thereof.

Leeeeeeeee (Leee), Friday, 16 September 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

...in some certain cases. Also, obv. I meant ILE WAS such an awful place vis-a-vis comix and bball.

i.e. In theory, you have a point, but in practice, it's much easier/better to have a board devoted to a single (if diverse) subject.

Leeeeeeeee (Leee), Friday, 16 September 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

So that's the basic question, for me: do you want this because you want to encourage more talk about games, or because you want somewhere for the hardcore gamers to hang out?

I think that both would be fine, same as with ILC. Go there for the hang out, and also for when folks have a "Should i get a PS2?" kinda question that Sam posted on one of my video game threads.

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 16 September 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

Do ILE regulars with passing interest really visit the subject-specific satellite boards to ask questions and then stick around for answers?

I mean to be honest that's about 3 clicks too deep into the interface for me. I don't care enough. I don't think many people honestly do.

TOMBOT, Friday, 16 September 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

I would love to talk about games more, either on ILE or on a new board, and it seems like the topic/genre might benefit from the incubation in the same way that ILComix did. I would want to talk about not only video games but also board games, card games, and roleplaying games.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 16 September 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

In case it's not clear, Leee's not exactly unbiased here: he's the guy who set up I Love Comics. And (switching from first to third person), you're arguing based on two data points, when there's another two that argue against (Guitar and Cooking).

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 16 September 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

I think ILC has a centre (= superhero comics, duh) that ILG wouldn't.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 16 September 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

I Love Baseball appears to have a center too (revisionist, SABR-metric, stat-heavy, occasionally Ptolemaic).

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 16 September 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

yeah, but consider our membership: we're an internet message board, so one could posit that a gamer board would attract more passing/permanent attention than a cooking board...

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 16 September 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

Why is it so hard for ILE regulars who are genuinely interested and enthusiastic in something to start threads on ILE about it, but so apparently easy for insipid twats to start 5-12 threads on every stupid idea they have for different ways to mispell the title of a thread somebody else started, or why one kind of stew is a lot like another kind of stew that is actually very different, you know, isn't that weird? While I'm on that topic bulk reposting of news articles can chew on my leathery bozack.

HULK ANGRY etc. NO NEED FOR ILG etc etc what the HELL, people

kingfish you could posit that, and you'd be right but only in the worst way possible.

NINTENDO NES

TOMBOT, Friday, 16 September 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)

I didn't mean that to sound like it was a massive conflict of interest or anything, just that people only remember the boards that succeed (ILX is board #62), and obviously people focus more on successes of their boards.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 16 September 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

the game threads are like the only thing I come back here for, but I could easily see forgetting that ILG exists altogether. I always intend to read ILC more often, but uh... I don't.

sux2bu (Adrian Langston), Friday, 16 September 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

Why is it so hard for ILE regulars who are genuinely interested and enthusiastic in something to start threads on ILE about it, but so apparently easy for insipid twats to start 5-12 threads on every stupid idea they have for different ways to mispell the title of a thread somebody else started, or why one kind of stew is a lot like another kind of stew that is actually very different, you know, isn't that weird?

Despite being generally in favor of a games board, I have to say that I completely agree with this.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Friday, 16 September 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

yeah, but those are more criticisms of how message boards work on the whole, rather than whether a gamer board should be or not.
Every message board has stupid, pointless, redundant, or insipid threads(some more than others, depending on your POV).

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 16 September 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

so one could posit that a gamer board would attract more passing/permanent attention than a cooking board...

You say that as if it was a good thing.

O'so Krispie (Ex Leon), Friday, 16 September 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

You say that as if it was a good thing.

"good" in that such a board would have more traffic than a cooking board, yes.

but as for the two different kinds of folks posting on those two boards, well, i'm not commenting on that one...

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 16 September 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

Personally, I know I would start more threads about video games, reply to be more threads about video games, and simply be aware of more threads about video games on a game specific board.

Andrew, if your reservations are due to a perceived lack of interest in a games board, couldn't we have a trial run for a few weeks and see if ILG can hold its own? I think it has a lot of potential.

I would love to talk about games more, either on ILE or on a new board, and it seems like the topic/genre might benefit from the incubation in the same way that ILComix did.

OTM teeny. I do indeed love comics, but probably wouldn't post about them often or track down the individual threads if they were buried in the rest of ILE.

P.S. Everyone whining about the arduous journey to non-ILE boards needs learn about the Bookmark Board function. You too can push that button.

Laura H. (laurah), Friday, 16 September 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

You have to be logged in for that to work.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Friday, 16 September 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

Only works if you're logged in.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 16 September 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

I don't log in and I use about 16 different computers to waste time on the internet throughout the course of a month, so bookmarks are useless to me anyway. No roaming profile, I have to do all my shit by hand eveywhere I go.

TOMBOT, Friday, 16 September 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

Eventually, I will wise up and create a bookmarks file (and an adblock file) that I just stow away on my gmail account and import on a frequent basis.

Until then I will continue to use my brain to store a tremendous amount of stupid information.

TOMBOT, Friday, 16 September 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

Tombot pretty much Otm throughout here, I wouldn't be too thrilled to see discussion of video games vanish from the main ILE discussion threads.
and about the bookmark thing, yes well to be honest it is an arduous journey to keep going back and fourth from ile to other boards. ile is a social gathering and i think it loses this slightly with the seperation. Just my thoughts anyway.

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 16 September 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

ILWWE is the best board on this site, anyway. It's base: laughing at Matt Hardy.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 16 September 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

i'd like to be able to start threads abotu specific games and games-related stuff w/o losing them in the shuffle--and to be able to keep up with what people are talking about at a glance--so i'd totally read this.

i'd like to be able to start threads abotu specific games and games-related stuff w/o losing them in the shuffle--

that's part of why i wanted to do this. I wanted threads on Psychonauts & Bloodlines(and Fallout), but i consider ILE to be a general board where game-specific threads would glug glug glug down the drain too quickly.

but yeah, as Laura said, why not just give it a try?

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 16 September 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE JUST START THE DAMN BOARD SO WE CAN LOCK THIS THREAD?

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 16 September 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

We could, of course, use the Dunte/Asia board to test run various satellite ideas.

I think that I'm kind of of a representative nerd on here. All the good satellites except the noize are ones that I frequent. Hence, they are good.

As for the no-bookmarks rule and doing everything manually: if you manually go to ILX, then you can manually type in board number just as easily. Through repeated use, I have boards #62 and 47 committed to memory, in addition to 35. And 55, I think.

Leeeeeeeee (Leee), Friday, 16 September 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

We could, of course, use the Dunte/Asia board to test run various satellite ideas.

there's that, but i don't really wanna have to deal with a FYAD-like board when yakking about MGS4, etc.

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 16 September 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

I'd just like to point out that Carcassonne is lame.

Now Puerto Rico on the other hand...

The Yellow Kid, Friday, 16 September 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

um...huh?

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 16 September 2005 21:17 (twenty years ago)

The Yellow Kid OTM.

Do ILE regulars with passing interest really visit the subject-specific satellite boards to ask questions and then stick around for answers?

I prefer the smaller boards to ILE. Even though ILCooking doesn't get more traffic, if I had to stop reading either ILE or ILCooking, no question. I'm fine that I don't have to choose that, however.

But I don't have any particular interest in whether the Game board starts up or not. I would see what flavor it developed and that would make me decide whether to post on it. And I'm far more interested in board games than video games (though I play those a bit too).

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 16 September 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

Actually I take that back, Carcassonne isn't totally lame, it's OK. I'd play it. But there are a lot of games I'd rather play.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 16 September 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

Personally, I know I would start more threads about video games, reply to be more threads about video games, and simply be aware of more threads about video games on a game specific board.

This is true of me, too.

I don't know if it would be good for boardgames or not.

I up in this bitch want an I Love Games

Onimo (GerryNemo), Saturday, 17 September 2005 00:11 (nineteen years ago)

Another reason to start ILG is that in my case, I haven't gamed in a while so I find big catchall VG threads currently going to be too daunting to sift through. If just want to talk about some random small title, ILG would make my participation easier.

Leeeeeeeee (Leee), Saturday, 17 September 2005 04:28 (nineteen years ago)

Good point. I might do same. I'm wary of "forgetting" the board, tho I'd add it to my bookmark doohickey.

I might try to get my boi involved in ILG if it does start up - his input would be quite valuable and he writes well (and lurksish on ILX)

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 17 September 2005 05:04 (nineteen years ago)

that's another reason i had for doing it. I'm kinda curious to see what folks would post or be drawn to a gamer-oriented board that wouldn't necessarily do so for ILE on the whole.

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Saturday, 17 September 2005 05:09 (nineteen years ago)

Well he just said he prolly would contribute to a games board, if that helps the cause :) I cant think of anyone else on ILX who is an actual games artist/coder like Nick is? He comes up with loads of good "what if" stuff.

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 17 September 2005 05:39 (nineteen years ago)

dude, plenty of people hate MGS3 due to its fucked camera & camo system.

what about Puzzle Bobble, or Metal Slug? you too old for that?

what about stuff like Harvest Moon/Animal Crossing?

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 04:41 (nineteen years ago)

MGS3, if its the one I'm thinking of that I watched Nick play, was SHITE! The dialogue was atrociously corny.
