We're ditching the 15 year old Hoover and going washing machine shopping - yay!

Are washer/dryers as unreliable as they once were? Is it true Hoover machines are no longer very good?

Let's get domestic!

Rumpie, Tuesday, 20 September 2005 10:10 (twenty years ago)

the Hoover machines really suck

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 10:19 (twenty years ago)

So do Indesit.

C J (C J), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 10:19 (twenty years ago)

How's about the cheap and cheerful Candy?

Posh Bosch?

Rumpie, Tuesday, 20 September 2005 10:23 (twenty years ago)

This is scary. I'm online looking at them right now and... Actually the Twilight Zone music will say more than I can!

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 10:26 (twenty years ago)

we've just ordered an indesit washer-dryer (full washing-machine woe explained on another thread somewhere; i'd try searching but what's the fucking point?) which seems to have had glowing reviews everywhere. can't remember the model number, but it's something comical like a "widl 126" (heheh, they said "widdle").

we ordered it from comet: it's come to about 330 quid all-in, including fitting (and the fucking silver colour scheme that mrs F demanded). i looked at a shitload of washer-dryers online: this was the only one that seemed to have a decent number of features, good user reports, and a half-decent price.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 10:35 (twenty years ago)

I think saturday will be washing machine day. Do you think wherever I get it from will uplift my old leaky behemoth machine?

x-post - that sounds absolutely ideal. I too quite fancy silver.

Rumpie, Tuesday, 20 September 2005 10:37 (twenty years ago)

I've got an Indesit washer/dryer which I've had for about 10 years so I suppose I shouldn't complain about it. It's only broken down a handful of times, and hasn't been expensive to fix on those occasions (covered by extended warranty for the first five years), but the repairs are carried out by approved tradespeople on Indesit-Merloni's list, and the one local to Oxford was based in Reading and was really shite. Didn't turn up for appointments, took weeks to order parts etc etc.

I vowed that next time the machine broke down, I'd sling it out and buy a new one - but it's been okay for a long time now (ha! I bet that's put the mockers on it now!)

I bought a washer/dryer because I thought it might stop me using the tumble dryer part of it too much - if I am washing, then I can't be drying (which is expensive), so the idea was to just use the dryer only for emergencies. It isn't a particularly quick dryer anyway, and the wash cycles take for ever too (even a 40 degree quick wash with the ecowash button selected). I've been a bit disappointed with it all round, really.

When I replace it, I'm going to revert to separate washing and drying machines. I don't think you can go far wrong with Bosch.

C J (C J), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 10:46 (twenty years ago)

Washer dryers are completely rubbbish in the dryer function. I gave up using the dryer function as hanging clothes up turned out to be far quicker.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 10:48 (twenty years ago)

Slow? Mmm. Mine is currently taking two and a quarter hours to complete a cycle. If it completes at all.

Rumpie, Tuesday, 20 September 2005 10:49 (twenty years ago)

i have a washing machine. i wash clothes in it. usually at 40C. using washing powder blocks. (those gel things leave spunky goo on the door. ick)

it is good

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:01 (twenty years ago)

Washer dryers are completely rubbbish in the dryer function. I gave up using the dryer function as hanging clothes up turned out to be far quicker.

mrs F used to say exactly the same, but then her dad got a washer-dryer that seemed to work surprisingly well. so we've taken the plunge. and, to be honest, our washing machine's been so wonky for the past couple of years that anything will be an improvement.

rumpie: comet claim they'll take away your old one free of charge as long as it's disconnected. irritatingly, disconnecting ours means hacking apart bits of our two-year-old fitted kitchen, but fuck it: it's a small price to pay.

to be honest, this whole comet thing - cheapness, plumbing, uplift, delivery when you want it - sounds too good to be true. the woe and misery of dealing with B&Q and ikea has left me with a deep mistrust of such places. if comet actually perform here, i'll be a) amazed and b) eternally grateful.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:15 (twenty years ago)

actually, that's pathetic. why should i be "grateful" for a company, you know, doing its fucking job?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:16 (twenty years ago)

The key to washer/dryers is to remember their drying capacity is half that of their washing capacity - so if you have a full load of washing it's impossible to dry them properly in one load in the same machine.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:23 (twenty years ago)

When's it due. God, sounds like I'm talking about a baby. Keep me updated, Comet sound like a good bet.

Rumpie, Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:29 (twenty years ago)

We never combine a washer 'n' dryer cause if one's broken, you have to give both up (if you send it for repair).

nathalie (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:57 (twenty years ago)

i have always just guessed how to use a washing machine, have no idea what settings i'm supposed to use, how much powder to put in. i just guess. Ours leaks at the moment from the door.

Guessing Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 12:03 (twenty years ago)

I bought all my new white goods (well, the stainless steel versions of white goods!) from Comet when I had my kitchen re-done a couple of years ago. Comet were always v efficient and punctual with deliveries and I never had any trubble with them.

C J (C J), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 12:11 (twenty years ago)

Somebody told me there was a Comet outlet store somewhere in Glasgow (South Side?) with different offers on each week. My ex-flatmate got 50% off a giant stainless steel cooker there during cooker week. You just have to phone each week to find out which species of electrical appliance is discounted.

I can't remember what kind of washing machine I've got. I inherited it with the house and it works fine, which is all I care about.

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 12:46 (twenty years ago)

Uh-oh, washing machines again. This was the first issue that ILx ever fell out over.

(They don't have them in the US, you see.)

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

wasn't it because some people keep them in their hallway too?

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 13:11 (twenty years ago)

do you guys have something like consumer reports in the UK? it's an independent organization that lab-tests stuff all scientific-like and then publishes the reports in a monthly magazine. It's the best thing ever. I've got to buy a w/d soon too.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 13:15 (twenty years ago)

It's called Which? in the UK.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

'Good Housekeeping' does a similar thing.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

rumpie: it's due on the 27th. i shall attempt to keep you updated.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 13:23 (twenty years ago)

John Lewis is the place to shop for this kind of stuff. Extended warranties and staff who actually seem like they give a shit.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 13:30 (twenty years ago)

Just whap it on at five and see what type of clothes come out.

I got stung by the half-load dryer thing: I thought mine was broken until I realised you have to press half-load to make it tumble dry. Grr.

stet (stet), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

I was very lucky when we moved into this house, got a miele washing machine, smeg cooker and dishwasher and frigidaire fridge for £800, they'd been in less than 12 months.

Miele is one of the best brands you can buy, but at a price. They do last an awfully long time though, so are probably worth twice the price of a hoover as you'd probably need two hoover machines before the miele gave up the ghost.

There's a really good website by a washing machine repair guy, but I can't find it at the minute, I think it's been linked to on an ile thread before, too

Vicky (Vicky), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

tick tick tick, comet. "delivery by 1pm", they said. mrs fiendish is waiting at home with increasing despondence.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 10:25 (twenty years ago)

it's turned up ...

... and "oh," says the fitter, "you've got an extended waste pipe. i can't deal with that, sorry"

so much for comet's "we'll fit the new one and take away the old one" promise. fucking wankers. i've effectively paid, what, 15 quid for them to suck air through their teeth and make some half-assed excuse.

angry letters will be fired off. but so far, the kids: fuck comet!

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 10:38 (twenty years ago)

Oh dear.... will you have to call a plumber?

I think we'll just uplift ours ourself and take the old one to the skip. We're rather embarrassed by the condition of it.

Still haven't decided on our new machine, it's come down to three - a Samsung, a silver Indesit, or a Zanussi - the Appliance of Science dontcha know.

Rumpie, Tuesday, 27 September 2005 10:43 (twenty years ago)

yep, i think some kind of plumbery japes will be in order. i mean, it doesn't look particularly complex, but i am dreadful when it comes to even the simplest DIY, and made the (sensible) decision a long time ago to leave these things to the professionals.

because B&Q made such a shit job of our kitchen, we need their (sub-contracted) plumber to come out and fit new taps under warranty. so the trick now is to get him to plumb in the washing machine at the same time. heh :)

getting rid of the old machine shouldn't be too much of a hassle: we've got one of those little trolley things. i'm just pissed off that comet made a shit excuse and fucked off.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 10:52 (twenty years ago)

I wonder if they do this a lot.

I'm a bit dubious about the man fitting it himself, I'll leave him to it and go out for the day - I can't bear the shouting and swearing involved in DIY.

Rumpie, Tuesday, 27 September 2005 10:54 (twenty years ago)

shit macgyver

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 11:08 (twenty years ago)

[mental note: never let RJG plumb in our washing machine.]

to be fair, comet have been quite decent about this. i've just called them and they'll sort out a refund for the fitting charge. they also claim they can still come round and pick up the old washing machine at a date of our choosing.

anyway: we're going on holiday tomorrow, so all this is going to have to wait :)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 11:13 (twenty years ago)

Bon Voyage, but eh - do bear in mind that you may have a shitload of laundry on your return,

Rumpie, Tuesday, 27 September 2005 11:27 (twenty years ago)

;)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 11:35 (twenty years ago)

well, our shiny new indesit widdle is now plumbed in and has completed its pre-washing wash-out (if you see what i mean). it appears to be teh grebt. and comet are refunding the cash for the aborted installation, and picking up the old, clapped-out washing machine on thursday. woo fucking yay.

i got to help the plumber fit it. i feel ever so manly.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 10 October 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

Our new silver Indesit came last monday, so sleek, so mmmmmm.

My washing has never smelt so clean, I keep wondering what the old machine was actually doing all that time, wetting the clothes?

Rumpie, Tuesday, 11 October 2005 05:20 (twenty years ago)

Due to blocked drain problems our washing machine often fills up with rancid semi-sewer water that backs up through the system and has to be flushed out before the machine can be used. Nice.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 06:02 (twenty years ago)

four years pass...

What a palaver ...better not to have to do all this again for another 10 years at least:

Like Grimly above I needed to arrange not just delivery of a new washing machine, but also for a plumber to uninstall the old machine and plumb the new one in. Gratifyingly he found both tasks quite difficult, relieving any guilt I might feel about not being able to do this myself. A lot of waiting about though - "anytime from 7am - 1pm" is not an acceptable delivery slot in my view, and inevitably they were late. And I've still got a old washing machine to dispose in my kitchen, though apparently John Lewis will collect it.

The cost though!

Zanussi Washing machine -£415 from John Lewis

Plumber - £80

One day's annual leave - priceless

five years pass...

Very surprised to find out there's a community for washing machine videos on youtube (imagine there's msg boards etc too)

We bought the most basic model of Maytag washing machine in 1987. We've washed an average of 3 to 4 loads a week ever since. It has never given us the first hint of trouble, let alone ever required service. I strongly doubt any contemporary Maytag would demonstrate a similar durability.

Aimless, Wednesday, 4 November 2015 17:18 (ten years ago)

We got a combo LG washer/dryer (ventless) last year & though I was skeptical it works pretty good!

Takes a longer to dry but uses v little power. And it plays a happy song when it's done :D

The angriest I've ever seen my father in law was when he heard how much our washing machine cost (It's a Miele).

He went *mental*.

He thought we should have bought a cheap one and then called in a repair man every now and then.

He was too angry to hear that having to take days off work was a false economy.

djh, Wednesday, 4 November 2015 22:26 (ten years ago)

I have an insanely expensive LG pair, washer and dryer, I love them. though I actually liked the old top loading, water wasting washing machines more, I really do think they cleaned better and I like looking into a big tub of soapy water.
