Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 29 September 2005 13:17 (twenty years ago)

That cover's just weird. Did they ever have a cover involving the El?

Kittens Licking Cakes (coco), Thursday, 29 September 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

That's right, the "classic" 1984 album featuring "Stay the Night," "Along Comes a Woman," "Hard Habit to Break," and "You're The Inspiration."

Don't act like you don't know.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 29 September 2005 13:20 (twenty years ago)

I saw Chicago on this tour, as a boy. They performed "Hard Habit to Break", "You're The Inspiration", "Along Comes A Woman" and others. A comedian opened for them, who, I still remember, made a joke about Stevie Nicks' singing voice sounding like a vibrator. That's all I remember.

Eazy (Eazy), Thursday, 29 September 2005 13:21 (twenty years ago)

Do you think that cover is supposed to be an abstract representation of the Chicago street system? I.e., the twine is the N/S and E/W streets, like say Damen and Division, and then the crease under the band name is the diagonal NE/SW street, like say Milwaukee?

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 29 September 2005 13:21 (twenty years ago)

That cover's just weird. Did they ever have a cover involving the El?

Well, the original band name was Chicago Transit Authority, but CTA sued them. So I don't think they ever messed with the el again.

xpost Nick... I doubt that very seriously.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 29 September 2005 13:22 (twenty years ago)

Also, you get to listen to lots of great music on your ipod, including lots of silly stuff you would probably be embarassed to admit to listening to - like when Van Halen's Jump came on while I was on the eliptical machine.

I've found that Girls Aloud - What will the neighbors say? is the best gym album ever. It starts off upbeat when you're warming up and doing cardio. Then the ballads kick in right when you need to start intervals. And then the cover of Jump comes on. ROCK OUT.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Thursday, 29 September 2005 13:23 (twenty years ago)

Are you serious, Pauncy? I like Chicago Tranist Authority a lot better.

I can't think of any songs by Chicago, but I bet I would recognize all of them.

Kittens Licking Cakes (coco), Thursday, 29 September 2005 13:23 (twenty years ago)

I am serious, yes. Not making that one up.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 29 September 2005 13:23 (twenty years ago)

I've found that Girls Aloud - What will the neighbors say? is the best gym album ever.

No way, dude. Boston. We've been over this.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 29 September 2005 13:24 (twenty years ago)

Do you know "Saturday in the Park", Sarah?

"All The Things She Said" is good on the treadmill. As is most of Nelly Furtado's "Whoa, Nelly!"

Eazy (Eazy), Thursday, 29 September 2005 13:25 (twenty years ago)

Boston! I got to download some Boston when I get home. Then I will test your theory, but I tend to agree that it would work well.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Thursday, 29 September 2005 13:26 (twenty years ago)

I am a corny indie fukkk so I listen to Hot Snakes or the DFA comp a lot for working out. That Black Leotard Front song, "Casual Friday," is excellent for the elliptical, the perfect tempo, and it's like 15 minutes long.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 29 September 2005 13:26 (twenty years ago)

We should all make each other mixes to work out with - huh huh huh?

KENAN, are you coming over tomorrow night?

Kittens Licking Cakes (coco), Thursday, 29 September 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

I think trading workout mixes would be fun, Trixie-haters be damned.

Eazy (Eazy), Thursday, 29 September 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

My doc appointment this morning and dreaming of workout mixes has inspired me to go to they gym.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Thursday, 29 September 2005 13:31 (twenty years ago)

KENAN, are you coming over tomorrow night?

No. My friend Mike is in town, and Jessa's having a party for him. Why? What's tomorrow night?

You have to know that I don't read all of these threads.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 29 September 2005 13:33 (twenty years ago)

Stop Making Sense party at n/s's.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Thursday, 29 September 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

Oh, shit. I didn't know that was tomorrow. No, I can't go.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 29 September 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

1. What do we need to talk about, Sarah?

2. I think my friend Audra is throwing a Halloween party.

3. I know very little of the works of both Chicago and Boston. I know will you say, "Oh come on, I bet you know the songs without knowing you know them." People say that to me about things. Sometimes they are right but usually they are wrong. I wasn't very conscious of music as a kid and didn't listen to the radio regularly until 1990.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 29 September 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

You know "25 or 6 to 4," even I know that one.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 29 September 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

Also "More Than a Feeling." Those are probably the only ones I know.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 29 September 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

4. However, my dad went to grammar school with the trumpet player of Chicago and has a little book from his 8th-grade graduation that everyone in the class signed, including said trumpeter.

5. Yes, I do know "More Than a Feeling." But I feel like I've only heard that recently, after people talked about a) how great it is, and b) how much it sounds like "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (or I guess the reverse). I have no idea what "25 or 6 to 4" is: is that Boston or Chicago?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 29 September 2005 13:53 (twenty years ago)

Sooo, I'm looking online for lightweight basses, right? Because I plan to scout out some used guitar stores this weekend and want to come prepared, right? And then I read this review of the Danelectro Bass guitar. Keep in mind I am female and looking specifically for a lightweight bass.
...I liken a bass guitar to a woman. They come in many different shapes and sizes, some are cute and ugly; some are nice to handle, whilst some have great sustain and quality whilst others just don't cut the mustard.

...first picked up the "DC Bass" at Charlottesville Music and was not really all that impressed by the feel. It was much too light for starters...

...I went through the usual looks, feels, em's and some ah's as I felt up the neck, checked for warping, the usual look in the mirror with it strapped on me, etc...

It holds on tuning, but I can't really depend on it. I'm not impressed with the look and feel (perhaps a circus clown would) and it is not nearly close to the original Danelectro quality that reigned when they first came out. Well suited for practice only, I'd never suit it on a live floor.

Kittens Licking Cakes (coco), Thursday, 29 September 2005 13:54 (twenty years ago)

It sounds perfect for me! I am a clown! And I don't want to be strapped on that guy anyway.

Jaymc:
Remember in the last thread when I was joking that if you missed having relationship fights we could have one? So, yeah, I don't really have anything to talk to you about, but you could email me from time to time if you wanted.

Kittens Licking Cakes (coco), Thursday, 29 September 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

"More Than a Feeling" is one of my top ten songs, ever.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Thursday, 29 September 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

I should email more people.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Thursday, 29 September 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

Me too, I was thinking I should email you guys individually more. But I never email anyone, including my family, so don't feel bad if I don't.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 29 September 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

I don't know your friend Audra, Jaymc!

Kenan, Why don't you read these threads more? No one ever comes over to our house any more. I'm going to stamp my feet until someone comes over. Starting... now!

Kittens Licking Cakes (coco), Thursday, 29 September 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

I couldn't remember if it was "stomp" or "stamp." I obviously went with stamp. If it was stomp, I apologize.

Kittens Licking Cakes (coco), Thursday, 29 September 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

I couldn't remember if it was "stomp" or "stamp." I obviously went with stamp. If it was stomp, I apologize. Though, I guess I do have plenty of stamps at work, so I could stamp my feet too.

Kittens Licking Cakes (coco), Thursday, 29 September 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

Which stamp is more threatening - COPY or PAST DUE?

Kittens Licking Cakes (coco), Thursday, 29 September 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

dan m (OutDatWay), Thursday, 29 September 2005 14:23 (twenty years ago)

But ... I don't have mail!

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 29 September 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

Cool, send me the info/link/whatever please. Do you still have my email address? It's naamme at yahoo.

xpost Tell me all about it, plz! I've been applying for editorial positions all week.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 29 September 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

I applied for new jobs at the hospital over a month ago but no one has answered. I'm at the point of just taking out a crapload of loans and going back to school full-time and try to find and evening/weekend job.

One of my favorite workout CDs is the Bend it Like Beckham soundtrack. Nothing gets you going like Bollywood faux-hip hop. Plus it has "Atomic" and Mel C. on it.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Thursday, 29 September 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

I sent it to the gmail addy, John.

For once, I'm not actually looking for a job.

Kittens Licking Cakes (coco), Thursday, 29 September 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

I don't even want to TALK about jobs. Fuck jobs.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 29 September 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

Does anyone want to look at my cover letter/resume and tell me if there are any huge glaring errors on them that are keeping potential employers from actually, you know, calling me?

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 29 September 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

Nick, you've been including your glamour shot, right?

Kittens Licking Cakes (coco), Thursday, 29 September 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

There is also a Journals Production Controller job open, if you like color-correcting images and typesetting and that kind of stuff.

n/a and P.S., check yer emails.

dan m (OutDatWay), Thursday, 29 September 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

There may be another job of this kind opening soon...

Eazy (Eazy), Thursday, 29 September 2005 14:34 (twenty years ago)

And, when I work out, I listen to Hot Water Music, Small Brown Bike, and shit like that -- and I'm proud of it! Nothing like bringing the shouty emo.

dan m (OutDatWay), Thursday, 29 September 2005 14:34 (twenty years ago)

thanks, dan. that don't sound half bad. would the job be at U of C? in hyde park?

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 29 September 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

Hot Water Music, Small Brown Bike

Haha. Next time you see my friend Jason, mention these bands and he'll get all excited and talk your ear off.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 29 September 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

Yeah. The address is 1427 E. 60th St.

xpost Yeah, that's already happened! We bonded over our high-school discovery of Drive Like Jehu on cassete tape.

dan m (OutDatWay), Thursday, 29 September 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

I should've gone to bed earlier last night so I can make the big drive to Kalamazoo this afternoon without falling asleep.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 7 October 2005 14:13 (twenty years ago)

This week in 2001 I was probably reading The Corrections.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 7 October 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

Do you have a gig at Bell's?

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 7 October 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

I think he has a college reunion.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Friday, 7 October 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

Indeed. But we are going to Bell's to get drunk tonight.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 7 October 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

That's funny b/c this morning I was thinking it a "given" that by the end of the night, I'd be drunk as a skunk.

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 7 October 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

but i don't have to be! i could watch my intake!

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 7 October 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

Oh, right. You guys went to college in Kalamazoo.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 7 October 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

I'm jealous, I love Bell's beer. Maddie's addicted to the Two-Hearted.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 7 October 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

I didn't go to my college reunion. I did go to my 10 year HS reunion. (That's a little embarrassing.)

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 7 October 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

My high school has yet to have any reunions. Or any that they've told me about, anyway. I find that very strange. It's like nobody really gives enough of a shit to put one together. I know I sure don't. If it wasn't a huge hassle I might go to the 15 year one... oh no wait. I wouldn't, because that would be THIS FUCKING YEAR.

Nevermind.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Friday, 7 October 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

I heard that my five-year college reunion (which i missed) had all the hooking up and resolved unresolved tension that wasn't settled during Senior Week.

I went to a high-school reunion not long ago, and the geekiest geeks and the jockiest jocks both were successful MBA grads and therefore had a lot to talk about with each other.

Eazy (Eazy), Friday, 7 October 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

I have no desire to go to my high school reunion, since I have kept in touch with the people I liked, but college will be a blast. I'm predicting it will be like the night before we graduated, where we rented out a shady bar next to the railroad tracks and I got really drunk and sat on unknown men's laps and told everyone I loved them and then tried to play matchmaker for people I knew had had unrequited crushes for 4 years.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 7 October 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

Renee and her friend Blake, who both went to U. of I., thought it was weird to have a college reunion, since they've kept in touch with anyone worth keeping in touch with -- but I think they probably also don't have the sentimental attachment I do to a place like Kalamazoo, and the campus, and seeing old professors on the quad, and stuff like that.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 7 October 2005 14:47 (twenty years ago)

I would go to my high school reunion, too. I think it would be FASCINATING. Especially since I haven't stayed in contact with anyone from my year. I would totally regret not going.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 7 October 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

I mean, it'd be total fodder for the footnotes in my high-school journal blog -- which I do really want to revive, I promise.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 7 October 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

I couldn't imagine a college reunion, either. Most of my friends from college days weren't the type to go to school sponsored events. And the people I would love to run into at that kind of thing were in different graduating classes. It just seems like a college reunion would be populated by people I've never seen before.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Friday, 7 October 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

I also don't really want to go to high school reunion because I spent most of high school in the shadow of my older brother and I'm afraid I'll be bombarded with questions about him, since he's an elusive figure. Stupid reason, I know, but those old inadequacies emerge at the oddest times.
x-post
I have that attachment to Earlham too, of visiting the horse barn and the hash run trails and the professors. I have lost touch with some very good friends from college due to unforeseen and foreseen circumstances, but I do read their livejournals but don't comment since I don't have an account.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 7 October 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

I can't imagine going to a college reunion, because a) I still live in the same city, and b) I didn't really make friends with anyone besides my girlfriend and a bunch of musicians, all of whom I'm still in touch with.

High school would be pretty amusing, but I'm likewise still friends with the people worth being friends with.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 7 October 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

I would like to go to my 10 year in 2007. I think it would be fun to make fun of everyone that never left pink hill/beaulaville/chinqupen, NC.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Friday, 7 October 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

I'll go with you! I'll be your trophy wife.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Friday, 7 October 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

Your weird, cynical, older, chubby trophy wife...

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Friday, 7 October 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

I'm too uppity.

Hello Adam.

We just can't be tamed.

It really is new thread time, though.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 7 October 2005 15:46 (twenty years ago)

I think Kenan needs to start it, though.

400% Nice (nordicskilla), Friday, 7 October 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah. Where's Kenan? That's his job. He also has to remind us which hits were on that particular Chicago album.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 7 October 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I fucked up last time I tried.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 7 October 2005 15:48 (twenty years ago)

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 7 October 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

xpost: shucks, Kelsey. I think you're the bee's knees, too.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Friday, 7 October 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

We'd be like those cute lesbian couples who kind of look and dress alike, and we could get pugs.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Friday, 7 October 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

Can I be one of your pet pugs?

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 7 October 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

And almost matching sweaters for the pugs, but in different color argyles.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 7 October 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

I love little dogs in sweaters. PRECIOUS.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Friday, 7 October 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)
