NBA 05-06: Artested and Proven (inc. Fantasy League stuff!)

Legal battles among co-owners over a maximum deal for an out-of-position point guard! DNA testing for Eddy Curry! Ron Artest back in (brand new) Pacers uniform! The Miami Heat buy a second team plane just for their egos! You must now be 19 years of age to ride this NBA ride according to The Commish! That's right folks, it's the NBA 2005-2006 season.

Training camps have just started with the thrills and chills of media day. Vaguely Zen pronouncements from Phil Jackson! Larry Brown tries to convince us (and himself) that Stephon Marbury is indeed the best point guard in the East! Shaq opens the circus! LeBron has real teammates now! So, it's about that time to start talking, folks...

...and also time to get a-rumblin' in this year's Yahoo fantasy league. I've just set it up, we are TRU WARIERS in honor of Reinstatement Artest's wonderfully named record label. Currently we are league #50534, hit me for the password, and our draft is scheduled LIVER than a dying sitcom for Oct 23rd at 11 AM, giving us around ten days to trade, pickup free agents, and trash talk until the real balls start bouncing.

Oh and I forgot! As I was clicking through the scoring categories, I realized there may be a second fantasy league goldmine: available as cats are fouls, times fouled out, ejections, technicals and flagrants! I propose a second league with ONLY those categories, highest totals win, THUG LIFE.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 3 October 2005 22:48 (twenty years ago)

I wasn't aware of the Curry situation being national news. I was hoping all season long that he'd do perform well enough to have a high trade value, so his heart "condition" surfacing was just about the worse possible thing I could've imagined.
I've got a feeling that Ben Gordon will be a bit of a bust, but Luol Deng will take up the slack. Hopefully Hinrich will be more consistent with his jumpers.

Who's going to be the first player to get 50pts? McGrady? Iverson?
Think Minnesota will recover from last season?

oops (Oops), Monday, 3 October 2005 23:25 (twenty years ago)

Losing Sam Cassell and Latrell was necessary, but replacing them with Marko Jaric and Nikoloz Tskitishvili was not. Also their new head coach has no NBA head coaching experience. If Garnett is smart, he will go down with a "season ending injury" and they can aim for a high lottery pick.

a picture of a fat girl hugging Rick Perry, awesome (Matt Chesnut), Monday, 3 October 2005 23:31 (twenty years ago)

No no no if he's smart he'll fake suicide and sign to the Bulls as the afro-ed Machmoud X.

Do you think Prince would write a Garnett tribute song?

Isn't that what Sexy MF was all about?

oops (Oops), Monday, 3 October 2005 23:47 (twenty years ago)

The other night I dreamt that I missed the Pistons season opener and then found out they lost to the Grizzlies by 40 points. The sad thing is I don't think I can do League Pass again this year, so maybe it was more of a premonition. :(

My prediction for first player to 50 is Amare, who also has a good shot at winning the MVP now that the Suns have less offensive players and more role/support players.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 3 October 2005 23:57 (twenty years ago)

Whoa Curry got traded to the Knicks after all.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 00:30 (twenty years ago)

oof, i wonder who they got in return. i remember the bulls tried to sign tim thomas awhile ago, after tracy mcgrady fell thru, but then we ended up with ron mercer instead.

Sym Sym (sym), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 01:53 (twenty years ago)

oh god did the bulls get what the rumors said they'd get for Curry? fuck. even with those scrubs coming here, i'm still glad Curry's gone. He was the one guy who didn't fit into Skiles'/Paxson's all-hustle, no ego designs. If he can play for 4 or even 3 quarters as well as he does in the first quarter, NY will make out like a bandit.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 02:05 (twenty years ago)

Isiah must have compromising photos of someone in the Bulls front office.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 02:06 (twenty years ago)

well at least the bulls will have lots of cap space... for peja. mmm

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 02:15 (twenty years ago)

Bulls got a bunch of cap room, a conditional draft pick in the first and second of 2006, Sweetney and Thomas.

scrimhaw1837 (son_of_scrimshaw), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 02:21 (twenty years ago)

anyone have a list of big free agents for 2007?

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 02:30 (twenty years ago)

How much cap room did the Bulls gain?

Curry was in his restricted year (low-ball offer), with maybe a big extension coming up after the season under his Bird rights. So they didn't actually 'gain' any space there aside from what they might have offered Curry after the season (and if he plays well, better to have a young talented big man than 'cap space' to waste). Antonio Davis has two years, $12m per left or thereabouts which just balances Tim Thomas in years and money (and they give up some D for a few more points on the offensive end there).

So it looks to me like they traded Curry for a mid-first pick. Ouch.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 02:31 (twenty years ago)

I believe 2007 is BronBron's unrestricted year.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 02:31 (twenty years ago)

oof

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 02:32 (twenty years ago)

so Chandler/Antonio Davis/Luol Deng/Kirk Hinrich/Chris Duhon.
Bench: Gordon, Thomas, Nocioni, Songalia, Harrington?

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 02:33 (twenty years ago)

Davis went to the Knicks, so Thomas would be starting in the 4.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 02:35 (twenty years ago)

With Davis I think the cap relief the Bulls get works out to around $22 million.

scrimhaw1837 (son_of_scrimshaw), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 02:45 (twenty years ago)

miloz, you're right, young, talented big men don't come along too often.

scrimhaw1837 (son_of_scrimshaw), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 02:46 (twenty years ago)

We can't forget that Darko will be on the market in 2007.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 02:47 (twenty years ago)

And in a few days the Knicks will take on another absurd contract, this time an uninsured $50 million or so shot.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 03:37 (twenty years ago)

did i mention to anyone but aaronW that ive had two business meetings with the cuban and dinner/drinks once too!

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 07:17 (twenty years ago)

oh wiat, so it was curry & antonio davis for tim thomas, michael sweetney, some jackson dude, and a 1st round pick? wtf??

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 07:56 (twenty years ago)

So the Raptors shipped Rafer Alston to Houston for Mike James... I think with Stromile Swift there to do the dirty work and Yao with a full summer of rest and T-Mac with a full year under Van Gundy's system, they're going to be in the top 4 out West this year. Although that bench is about as old as a geriatric home.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

Houston looks good. They also grabbed Derek Anderson off the Blazers. I think they'll supplant Dallas as Texas' No. 2 team this year.

The Suns lose Joe Johnson and Q and replace them with Boris Diaw and Kurt Thomas. Is this going to affect Amare's numbers? I thought a lot of the Suns' power last season came in their ability to score from any position on the floor (as long as their starters or Jim Jackson were out there). Now Amare's got a target on his back and it'll be easier for defenses to focus on him without having to worry about allowing a flurry of open threes. Marion will need to play insane. They'll make the playoffs, sure, but 60 wins again? Not convinced.

How do the Kings look this year? No more Bobby Jackson, first full year with no C Webb, Bonzi and Shareef as the new guys. I have no idea how this might work out.

How soon before 'George Karl is on the hotseat' stories start bubbling up? I'm guessing February.

metonymus prime (rgeary), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

"The team must still pay Houston, whose contract reportedly is insured and whose salary comes off the salary cap next year." - ESPN

Are You Nomar? (miloaukerman), Monday, 17 October 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

The Knicks are only responsible for some $16 million of his $40 million contract -- the rest is insured.

In all, after waiving Jerome Williams under the Allan Houston rule the Knicks are ducking $60 million in luxury tax. (Because Houston's last game was Jan 2004 it may come off sooner, I'm not sure about when the nba's fiscal year starts.)

So the last of the pre-Zekers are gone, and Eddy Curry is wearing Charles Oakley's number. Should be an interesting season.

scrimhaw1837 (son_of_scrimshaw), Monday, 17 October 2005 22:24 (twenty years ago)

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

Unless he drops dead (which isn't really funny), I gotta say that poaching Eddy Curry from the Bulls was a great move by Isiah. When Hardaway, Antonio Davis and Houston come off the books next year the Knicks will actually be, well, in a decent position to sign players. Which of course will mean that Isiah throws $15mil at someone like Al Harrington.

Oh, and guess who's leading the league in blocks in the preaseason?

no seriously i am glad that darko will get some burn (and not the pine-to-ass kind), maybe he'll finally start paying off.

if he can give them 10-15 good minutes a night and come out like young marcus camby (jumping all over the place and blocking stuff) the pistons frontcourt looks great.

metonymus prime (rgeary), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

ok so i bumped up our max teams to 14 (we currently have 10) so there should be room for ya, teeny and yanc3y, and if earl nash, josh love and aaron's friend wanna hop in, we will be rolling 15 deep.

metonymus prime (rgeary), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

ie there will be fights over who gets to draft gerald wallace and doug christie

I PREDICT that whoever drafts Al Jefferson will win the league going away.

it should be only about hoops, fashion and hip-hop

I don't know! Although I did set up an I LOVE FOOTBALL (soccer) board one time before everyone said "I say, bad show, now all the h00ligans will fl00d the board and we don't want that now, pip pip, sun never sets, don't chew know"

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

I assume you mean the San Francisco Giants.

Leeeeeeeeee (Leee), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 01:56 (twenty years ago)

I'd be all for an I Love Basketball board, largely because once this thread drops off New Answers I'm gonna forget it exists, much like this year's college football thread. Not to mention that a Worst Draft Pick Ever thread could make its own gravy - Frederic Weis! (Hell, a Worst Knicks Draft Pick Ever thread, too, for that matter.)

What does Amare's loss mean for the Suns, anyway (besides Marion getting triple-teamed on every possession)? I wonder about Kurt Thomas' efficacy on that team - he'll be a men among walking corpses in Phoenix, as the Parade o' Stiffs includes such luminaries as Pat Burke, Brian Grant, and Paul Shirley.

If there's room for one more in the league before the draft, I'd love an invite, too - danielcohen at gmail. No worries if all the slots are filled.

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 12:46 (twenty years ago)

the suns were already thin -- what's up with trading BOTH yr two guards, even if each is overrated?? -- and amare's injury puts them at the six seed in the west AT BEST. marion cannot create his own shots and is way too remiss to drive. it's going to be a disappointing year. (i dunno why they thought kurt thomas would fit on that team -- he is by no means a bad player, but an energy guy he is not.)

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

if you want a hoops board post here: I Love Hoops

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

I think the scariest thing about Amare's knee surgery is that it's the same thing that Penny Hardaway, Terrell Brandon, Chris Webber and Allan Houston all had done and, uh, they didn't turn out so good did they?

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 14:05 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sure why the Suns got rid of so many personnel this season -- I thnk fewer than five players from last year's roster remain. I didn't think they had salary issues -- do they?

scrimhaw1837 (son_of_scrimshaw), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

wow we have to start 2 centers in this league?! Jason Collins gonna be getting some serious burn.

Josh Love (screamapillar), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

well, they have both nash and marion committed to max contracts, and they knew they need to do the same for amare. and that is what joe johnson was looking for. AND last season they signed q to a 4 year $50 million deal. so yeah, there were definite money concerns.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

I think everyone had Jason Collins at some point last year.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

heh, i wasn't in the league last year, i did another, smaller one with only 1 center, which meant Jason Collins got about as much roster consideration as, well, his brother.

Josh Love (screamapillar), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

d.c., just sent you the info

yanc3y did you get in yet? one slot left!

metonymus prime (rgeary), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 20:45 (twenty years ago)

that darko dunk is nasty! where did he get those handles?

metonymus prime (rgeary), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

the suns were already thin -- what's up with trading BOTH yr two guards, even if each is overrated?? -- and amare's injury puts them at the six seed in the west AT BEST. marion cannot create his own shots and is way too remiss to drive. it's going to be a disappointing year. (i dunno why they thought kurt thomas would fit on that team -- he is by no means a bad player, but an energy guy he is not.)

I think if they had anticipated Joe Johnson getting offered a max deal, they wouldn't have traded Q Rich in the first place. And Kurt Thomas+Brian Grant is an attempt at a defensive presence, I think.

Alls I knows is Jim Jackson is going to average at least 15 a game in their starting rotation.
